Please give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome in Side hour three The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Hey buddy, live from the.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Tire rack dot Com Studios tirack dot com. I hope
you get there. An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free
road hazard protection at over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirack
dot com is the way tire buying should be. Well,
I'll tell you a jolt of adrenaline into Friday night.
Two incredibly large stories. We have the big Karl Anthony

(00:58):
Towns trade to the Knicks coming up in a couple
of minutes. But a little bit more on that. Out
of this World finished between Virginia Tech and Miami, where
a hail Mary has ruled a touchdown and then overturned
on further review, where I really I can't understand how
they saw enough evidence to overturn it, like the call
in the field. That's where the call in the field

(01:19):
has to stand, because we saw it from a thousand
different angles. We watched for ten minutes after the play
was over.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Whatever the call.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Was on the field, that's kind of what it needed
to be, because there was nothing that told you, look,
and I'm not saying he definitely caught it, but there
was nothing that told me either way after what the
call in the field was.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Well, it's let's be a conclusive. If you're gonna have
no returning, you've got to have indisputable, irrefutable evidence that
he did not catch the football. And you can't tell
me from any of the replays. We saw no that
that happened. And the fact that it took them so
long to adjudicate it after the fact, right, confusion in
the moment as Miami player comes up with the football

(01:58):
at the end, but you rule it touchdown And now
we get into the all right, how long is it
supposed to take for a review? Right? This is what
we always talk about with the NFL. We do it
with the NBA, we did it with the w NBA,
where sometimes you'd have these calls that would be made
and like, all right, we're at four minutes. You have
had a whole commercial.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
But I was okay with the review being that long
because it's the end of the game. It's the final play.
It's not like you're gonna have to play again.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
No, no, But if it takes that long, that just tells
me that you don't know right, and you don't know
looking for a certain outcome. We're looking can we find
a way to overturn this. That's the thing. You open
yourself to, that level of scrutiny that you're in Miami
big you know, reaction, all of that, of lights flickering

(02:42):
on and off, all of these things going on.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Dude, I'm telling you. I'm telling you as a guy
that watches look how much ACC football do I watch?
Because that's my conference.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
ACC referees are the worst officials of any sport that
I could see. They are.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
There's certain games where I know Team X is going
to win, calls are made where I just don't understand,
and a lot of the head when whenever it's a
heritage team against a newcomer, like if oh, hey, it's
Boston College against North Carolina or it's Clemson against Syracuse.
I know the way the calls are going. I know
the way the calls are going to go. Yeah, I
mean I know, I know that. You know this game.

(03:21):
You have Virginia Tech and then you have Pride of
the ACC. The only really good team that's going to
come out of this year from the ACC is going
to be Miami.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
You have the Heisman leader. They found a way to
give Miami the win. I'm telling you, ACC refs, there
needs to be some sort of of a full of
a full bodied investigation. Okay, what goes into some of
these calls? So I mean on Saturday, I watch and
I say, how the hell is this call made?

Speaker 1 (03:49):
And I mean, I'm at the point where I know, okay,
I know how this game is gonna be, But do
you even know what's.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Got call that we played of the final play sounded
like a WWE reaction or a UFC fight over the top.
And to have that overturned after a multi I can
only imagine how many times they went through it. Maybe
only once it's like all right, this is I mean,

(04:13):
and you hate to and the.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Rest of the time the guy just said there eating popcorn. Yeah,
i'll give you that. I'll set my timer for four
minutes then i'll let you know.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
But it's hard. Like, I'm not a conspiracy theorist in general,
I'm not a guy that is looking for the the
nefarious in everything. I'm cynical on about a lot of things,
but in sports generally, like, all right, here's an outcome,
there's what stakes? Yeah, yeah, this just doesn't have that.
There's no good look coming at it. No, I don't
know how you overturn it. Would you need to have

(04:41):
a preponderance of evidence to say, Oh, it should be easy,
Like anything that's overturned needs to be easy.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Right, here's the one shot done, it needs to be
If it's not easy, And again, the longer you look
at thor we're really looking for it, I mean, are
you're really looking for a way to keep it? It's
a touchdown, right, you should say, Okay, it's a touchdown?
Is it really income pleat boy? From all these different angles?
You know, you know what, I can't really tell. So
we're overturning it. But wait, wait, but the call in
the field says the guy's right there said touchdown, and

(05:08):
now suddenly because you don't know you're going to overturn it,
Like that's the philosophy. That's hey, acc refs hashtag acc
refs telling man acc refs are the worst.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Well. They also had another play earlier in the game
where there was a sixty one yard touchdown called back
on a holding penalty, and many are pointing to the
officials history onics the way he tosses the flag and everything.
Oh yeah, and this is again going through our media brethren,
some heavy hitters that are calling this out going. Hey
wait a minute, dude. Kind of a dubious holding call,

(05:39):
and we can do that with a lot of holding calls.
Don't get me wrong.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
I remember three years ago when Syracuse nearly upset Clemson,
and I remember happening. We tied and I tried to
find the audio but it was I couldn't I couldn't
find the video, gangs.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
It was just a penalty call. There was a play
near the end. Syracuse is on their.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Final drive and they're losing and Clemson wound up winning
and Syracuse completes a pass and it looks like it's incomplete,
but upon review, they caught it, got came down and
got out of bounds, and the officials called it incomplete
on the field, and when they came back to say
it was now this game is that Clemson? When they
came back to say it was complete, the referee looked

(06:17):
like the last thing he wanted to do. You remember
there was announced to everybody it's a completed pass. It's
almost like he wanted to say, hey, I know, hey,
we all want Clemson to win, but hey.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
The guy happened to catch it. Like that's that's the
That's what ACC officiating is like. It is the it
is the worst of all the college football officiated. It's
the It's the in even the NFL too. I'd rather
have man, I'd rather.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Have Angel Hernandez behind the plate for a Mets World
Series game. And I'd rather have Jerome Boger doing a
doing a Jet Super Bowl game than having ACC refs
do anything.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
My team is to be fair, you just put your
teams in the the ultimate position to win. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Uh you notice I left out the Knicks because, like
I know, like Scott Foster, they would help the Knicks.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
So I'm okay with I understand, I understand, but this
is what I mean, big nude kickoff tomorrow. Are you
kidding me? You want to talk about an opening to
a show, Let's go.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Let's hear it one more time. This is the play
by play of the Hail Mary Virginia Tech in Miami
just a few moments ago.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I'm just down to this, droones.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Let's apply. They're sorting through the carnage on the game style.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
So there's a call on ESPN. They went and looked
at it. Obviously, they returned it and gave the incomplete signal.
Miami winds and now Hogan's the heel.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Hey, I just watched the mister McMahon. That was one
of the episodes, right, he's talking on the water. Two
man out of the back room, he's jumping into the ring,
he's cleaning house. Is he the third man? Yes he is, Yes,
he is nothing and stap into it.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
That was always my favorite because you always knew that
was the big birth of a new tag team rivalry.
Was a guy in the ring and he loses to
somebody and the other and the guy who lose to
his tag team partner shows up and the two guys
start beating the crap out of him in the ring,
and it looks and Gorilla Monson would go, oh, look
at this, this is unfair. You have two incredibly talented

(08:46):
wrestlers that are just going to town on whole COVID.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
This is so. And then somebody would come out from
the back in the bag, would clean house knock him out,
and they would both hold their hands up you and go, oh,
here's the next uh D, today's nabe that has a
whole new meaning. Yeah, well, well, okay, okay, But I
was going back. I was back. I was back in
the big days of w w A. I was back there,
back there, I was back back in the New York group.
But it was I mean, you know, seeing seeing this

(09:10):
play it again, I don't I don't know. And again
I don't know. I may it may have been, right,
like when we're looking at it from just pulling pulling
yourself out of how this transpired the timeline, just go
back to the play itself, you know, was he actually
out of bounce as he comes down like you got

(09:31):
a massive bodies all the way through? Did he have control?
Did he did he hit with the ball in his
hands all day? Kind of like that kid trying to
sue for what is now a one point two million
dollars simum. Right, had auction doesn't until October sixteenth. The
court date's October tenth. But right, he's got He might
have had one hand on it, but did you control it.

(09:54):
I mean, that's kind of the same argument that we're
having here, because the Miami guy walks out of the
scrum with the ball. But scrum after like seven second,
I thought the guy high pointed it and his ass
hits down, he's got the ball. That the end of
the when he hits the ground and he's got the ball,

(10:16):
that should be the other I thought happened, And watching
it on replay, I still think that's what happened. But
I get it again if you enter the monitor and
look at it once and overturn it, I guess, okay,
let's let's talk about it. But it takes that long
to go back and say, I don't know. Maybe again,

(10:36):
we're looking for a reason. The longer you look, we're
looking for a reason because if you think it's because
if you think it's a touchdown, you go you watch
a couple of times ago. Okay, that that there's you
know what, I can't really tell, and the call and
the fields a touchdown but no, but we're gonna really
look at this and say, oh, no, here, here, here,
he didn't catch it, and you just can't see it.
You just can't see it. And and you know, and

(10:58):
again I go back to and I think this would
be a great way to solve situations like this. It's
that the call on the field sometimes is what stands,
and sometimes it gets overturned, right because and and what
I mean by that is that the call in the
field should be what has to be overcome, Like there
needs to be enough evidence to overcome the call in
the field. And sometimes that's absolutely the case, and there's

(11:21):
not enough evidence, we can overturn it. But yet sometimes
when there's no evidence, we're going to overturn it anyway,
like there's no consistency, they can almost kind of it's
like an accordion where they can kind of expand and
contract the rule about what it is to overturn a
play when they feel like it, like, oh, because we
really want to go in to look at this, Hey,
this we're going to overturn where another play, another another situation,

(11:43):
it's oh, very quickly, yes, we can't see so call
in the field stands, And that's what That's what gets
you to the point of, hey, what kind of desired
outcome was there for this game? You know what kind
of desired that was there at the end with Miami
and everything that went on it. But it comes down
to this, you know, Jason, when we talk about the
sports in general, like we've had this conversation a lot,
as gambling gets legalized state to state, we're talking about

(12:06):
the billions of dollars that are being bet legally. Forget
about the shadow money, which is probably at least as large,
if not larger, overseas money. All of this stuff that's
a huge call a million yeah, yeah, right, And when
we start potentially getting into questions of the integrity of
an officiating crew of a conference, all of that. You know,

(12:30):
this this spirals into a much bigger discussion than just, ah,
they got a call wrong. Right, that's the other part
of this, right, because we're talking about yesterday, we're on
air and when Aubrey finally misses the fifty plus yard
field goal. Yeah right, I mean that's a point spread thing. Yeah,
we said it in the moment, right, five and a
half because I took the Giants plus the five and
a half and.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Also this isn't you know, this isn't Duke Vanderbilt. You
know this is not what hey, we look at it.
What doesn't really matter. Yes, it's matter because one of
them hopefully can get to six wins and go to
a bowl game. We can make this call here, but
this is a call with whatever with ever gambling ramifications
and and playoff right.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Number in the country because a highly touted player in there.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
There's there's no question that Miami is the best team
in the ACC. Now, maybe Clemson as the season goes
on and still get better. In I said a little bit,
I'm not that big because I'm not really sold the
k Clubnick is that great. But clearly Miami is is
out front and cam Ward is is a is a
big favorite right now for the Heisman Trophy. So how

(13:33):
important is it to the ACC that Miami stay undefeated, right,
that Miami stay a top ten team? Because now you're
not really worried about an ACC team missing the playoff
now because you get twelve teams in.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
But you want Mia. Hey, Miami to get a high
seed and be up there and maybe another team comes in.
But it's bad for the ACC if Miami loses this game,
and and and everybody knows because I knew coming off this,
I said, Wow, if Miami loses this game, that's an
awful first month for the ACC because all the teams
have lost, and you thought the one team you thought
was going to be great, they lose at home on

(14:06):
a on a Friday night, and in the ACC because
the ACC is also fighting for relevancy to stay together, right,
And that's where this gets bigger than just a national
championship type situation. It's the ACC is fighting to stay
a conference, right. They are fighting to stay one of
the top four because they just saw what happened in
the PAC twelve. And clearly, if any conference is the
next one to go, it will be the ACC. Because

(14:28):
what do I tell you, Florida State, Miami class there
gonna want to go. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
So if they have a bad year and they're not
a conference, you know how fast things change in college football.
How easy would it be to say, oh, we're leaving
these conferences now. So there's so much at stake for
Miami to win this game, just from a playoff perspective,
from a relevance perspective, and for the ACC staying a
conference perspective.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Acc refs. There you go, Boom exit. How about press exit?

Expresspros dot com. And now it's time for the Express
Prospro of the week. Ed, Well, there's no surprise who

(17:18):
the Express pros Pro of the week is. When you
had four hundred total bases and are on their way
to be in a fifty five to fifty five guy, Yeah,
go ahead, Frostburg playing Otani home run?

Speaker 2 (17:29):
What's one five heads up in the up product, So
Hey's on his way. That's summer fifty four for all
Tony a three run Titanic shot.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
There it is Dodgers TV on the call and congratulations
show hey Otani for being the Express pros Pro of
the week and one home runch. I mean, if he
turns out to be and we told you fifty to
fifty was gonna happen in fifty five to fifty five
was gonna be the big question? That's really where it's at, right.
Fifty four home runs, fifty seven stolen bases, fifty five
not even fifty to fifty one home run in the

(18:11):
last two games and in Colorado. Yeah, he's gonna get it.
Think about being forty forty Okay, boy, he betters it
by ten. He's better is at by fifteen, fifty five,
fifty five.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
It's insane the level at which he's played. And we
talked about it a bunch the other night. Folks can
find the podcast wherever you get your audio. Thanks for
being with us, being part of the extended family as
we continue our aggressive expansion globally here at Fox Sports Radio.
But it's just the idea of what he's meant to
this squad. Look, we knew that there'd be gaudy statistics.

(18:42):
There was no doubt of that. We watched it in
Anaheim for years. Thing I loved, and we got into
it deep, just talking about the emotional resonance, and even
last night, like he had every opportunity, just said, hell
with it. I'm done with the year. Right he's on
the field with his dog and his wife. Everybody else
is in the back with champagne and cigars and everything else.

(19:03):
And could have opted out of the Colorado series, but
I'm sure his eyes were nice and wide going. I
can do what I got. Three more games in Colorado,
let's go. And also I can maybe win the triple
crown right now. Here's see, here's the thing.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
And Otani was four for five tonight, getting his batting
average up to three h nine. Luis Arias for the
Padres tonight three for four, and you know, so this
is this tonight.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Otani could have potentially caught him tonight, but Arias gets
three h's. Now he's hitting three fourteen.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
It's gonna be really difficult, especially since I don't think
Otani's gonna play the last couple against both these last couple.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Of games, he may play one.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
He may play tomorrow, and it may not play Sunday
because like the Dodgers, you're talking about clinching the uh
the number one overall seed. Is he really gonna play
both games? Is he gonna play one?

Speaker 2 (19:55):
You know that that's kind that's kind of tough, and
and five points at this point is really oh, it's
a difficult, like he would be if Arias took an
over tonight, like if Rios took out we went over
for tonight. Then all of a sudden, it's in striking.
Did He's probably within two or three points of a rise.
And then Okay, maybe it can happen, but this is
a lot. Five points in two days is a lot
either way. The level of absurdity because they needed him

(20:17):
to carry. Like as much as we talk about the
Dodgers and the overall record, they got off to the
hot start. A lot of injuries that we've well chronicled,
what's happened on the pitching side, but we saw it
at the plate, the number of guys that were struggling,
and we wait to see, you know, how quickly Freddie
Freeman's ankle response as you get ready for the playoffs.
But the Otani season, I mean, obviously in LA, we've

(20:38):
covered every minute of it. We've watched every bat nationally
as we talk here at Fox Sports Radio. I don't
know that folks necessarily realize, other than a box score
and a little highlight every once in a while, just
how great and odd it is watching a guy every
at bat, wondering what the hell is going to happen next,
and hitting at this kind of and raking at this

(20:59):
kind of We're literally watching the greatest player ever.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
And if he wins the Triple Crown, okay, just for
a second, if he wins the Triple crown. You would
have to say, this is the greatest season a hitter
has had in.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
Baseball history, not even close.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
Okay, fifty five fifty five, four hundred total bases and
triple crown. Like there's nobody you gotta go back to, Like, hey,
did Hack Wilson ever have?

Speaker 2 (21:26):
What was Hack Wilson's already knocked in one hundred and
ninety runs? Like what was that? We always do the
straight one to one Babe Ruth, right, because he pitched
and then and then became obviously the slugger that he did,
but he played against like six teams. Yeah, but here's
the thing. Oh Tani may may top him in every way,
shape and form. But my brother sent me this quote
a little bit earlier, attributed to Babe Ruth, and I
thought it would be appropriate in this moment on a

(21:48):
Friday night. Be safe out there, people. Sometimes when I
reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and I think about
the workers in the brewery and all their opes and dreams.
If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered. Babe Ruth,
damn TONI ain't giving us that. I'm taking that into

(22:11):
the weekend that I mean, you want to talk about quotes,
I might put that up on my wallet. That's a
good one. You know.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
My wife was showing me a picture today of Babe
Ruth because all this of the stuff goes in her
Facebook feed now with Otani and sure, she shows me
a picture of Babe Ruth and shees, look at this picture.
I said, yeah, Babe Ruth. She goes, how old do
you think he is there? And I said, oh, I
don't know, you know, thirty three, thirty four. She goes,
he's nineteen years old.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Yeah, yeah, I mean just look at some of the
last shots of him not exactly getting it in the
right fuld age. No, I mean he was in the
Wilford Brimley Path. He had diabetes, Wilfrid Brimley. And we're
not talking about the thing. You know what, here's the thing.
Babe was never rien during his heyday. He was never
as heavy as people thinking, no, no, no, they have

(22:56):
the big baggies. You know, people think it no Goodman
played the babe. I'm like he was not. John Goodman's
got like fifty pounds on big baggy uniforms.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
Man.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Nah, he was uffy. You leave Walter so chock alone.
My dad says, he that's his favorite character in movie history.
It's Walter. Yeah, because it's so off the charts, because
you see Goodman and all these other things. He's always great.
But that one your dads, you know you should do
here because here, I bet you John Goodman, at some
point you're gonna say, listen, calmer than you are, how

(23:28):
would you like to make money by doing absolutely nothing
and doing something funn He would say, yes, all right,
I'm gonna pay you one thousand dollars. What do you
want me to do? I want you to come to
my house and I'm gonna give you the sign and
I want to start yelling right in front of my
dad's car. My dad's gonna come to the window, and
you go, this is what happens, Larry, And I want
you with a crowbar to break the shatter the windows
of my dad's car. Now if he was it, but

(23:50):
he does the full run in dialogue he's going to
jail more. Yeah, okay, okay, the neighborhood's probably gonna have
some problems. I just bought that car. You just have
to do. This is what happens, Larry, this is what
I do. Like, so I called to check it out
my folks, for everybody that's experiencing this storm, Helene and

(24:11):
and all the aftermath. We watched the video yesterday. I
mean it's just incredible. And the causeway that I drive
from the airport to go see my folks when when
I go down to Florida, I mean that was run
over and over flooded. You know that sh swimming in it? Yeah,
I mean that was before the thing really even hit.
I think I saw a shark in there. It might

(24:32):
have been. Yeah, So I called just to check out them,
and it becomes a twenty minute thing about movie rolls
and random guys. He starts telling me about his love
of g and Carlosposito. We start talking about do the
right thing that he randomly brings up, goodman. Like it
started going all over, like evidently you guys are doing okay, Yeah,
and you're just passing time watching move with your stream
of consciousness, Like what do you what are you watching?

(24:53):
Where are you getting this collection of Like you're watching
the great character actors of our time? What are we doing?
But it's those things so you know, basically, that's my
weekly reminder. Make sure to check you in on your people.
Not that they're dealing with necessarily with biblical flooding or whatever,
but just in general.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
Jason Smith Mike Harmon Live from the tirec dot Com studios.
And oh, by the way, if there's there's a there's
a college football program that wants to put out a
picture of a quarterback standing in shark confested waters where
it looks like a flood, probably not the week to
do that.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
I'm just saying probably not the week for that. No, probably,
But let me just say this because now now I'm
gonna hit you between the eyes or something. Oh, here
you go, Captain Marvel, right between the eyes.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
A big deal. We watch it go down earlier. We're
talking about it throughout the show tonight. The huge NBA trade.
The Knicks get Karl Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves
in exchange for Julius Randall and Dante DiVincenzo. Now, there
is gonna be a couple other parts to this trade.
The Knicks are gonna part with a first round pick
that they got via the Pistons. There'll be a third
team involved, to make it happen. Financial money stuff. But

(25:55):
this is the trade. It's it's Karl Anthony Towns for
Julius Randall and Dante div Ncenzo. Now, as I've said,
the Knicks did me a favor because I do not
have to drive Julius Randall to the airport, which I
said I would do if they wanted to send your trip.
They did it really did. Gasoline too. Gas is expensive, man.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
But I want to say, but you can't get a
small small compact either, because that's a big guy. Yeah, yeah,
that's true. I can't just can't just get it. Yeah,
I gotta be suva. But I will say, you want
you ready for this?

Speaker 1 (26:22):
I don't know if what the Knicks are right now
is possible without Julius Randall. Okay, follow me, because I'm
gonna say this is where I'm gonna give Julius Randall
a lot of credit on stuff.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Wait, he's part of the Knicks origin story. Hang on.
The Knicks were going nowhere for a long time, right.
They tried to figure it out with Carmelo Anthony. It
didn't work because they had to come out of Isaiah
Thomas with something. And you know, they had a couple
of years where you thought they were going to get
over the top and they just did no good No,
the fill run was terrible.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
Porzingis didn't want to stay. They traded him. The Knicks
were treading water, and then they got Julius Randall. And
least Randall has been for his most of his career
on bad teams. He was a really good player, right
that that's the thing on bad teams.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
Julius Randall was a good player and the Knicks were
bad when he showed up. But in twenty twenty, and
you know, going back in years, Julius Randall was very good, right,
he was really good, and it kind of was a
It was kind of where the Knicks had bottomed out
and you knew, Okay, now they're going to be able
to build off of this because they have a really

(27:27):
good player that you can build around. And whenever a
team has that, okay, you stop the bleeding, you stopped
the backsliding. The Knicks have been back sliding for years.
What it's like, This's like they were wearing no shoes
on a mud filled ramp. I can't even stay up
going seventy three, yea, But Julius Randall gave them, you
know shoes, those hiking shoes with the with the yeah
and stop. So once Julius Randall was good, hey, twenty

(27:51):
twenty was a different. It was whoa, maybe the Knicks
can start building something. And since that happened, they built
towards where they are four years later, right the hiring
new front office hierarchy to come in. They know what
they were doing. They made smart moves and free agency
because they showed, Hey, Julius Randall was hey, who are you?
What's your identity? Way? Julius Randall came here and wow,
he's playing really well and he's happy here. He plays

(28:14):
well the Knicks fans like him to. Obviously, things change
over the course last couple of years because Julius Randall
had one year he didn't se him interested. He got
hurt last year. He put off surgery for.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
A long time and the team morphed into something different
without him, and that's why they wound up trading him
because they saw in the playoff last year, hey, when
we play with these four guards and a big between
Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartstein, this is our best team.
So if we need we want to get a big
to throw in there in the middle, and that's going
to be our best version of ourselves. Hence the trade
for Karl Anthony Towns. But for Julius Randall, like he

(28:45):
was the guy, he was almost like the beacon that
showed you, hey, come here and we can do Okay,
Julius Randall is doing fine. He's our identity. Let's get
somebody to pair with him. They paired Jalen Brunson with him. Hey,
it's a one to two punch, but it turned into
a really one punch with Brunson, and Julius Randall was,
you know, slowly out of it. But I don't know

(29:06):
that they get Brunson. I don't know that these guys
all come here and they build this momentum without Randal
coming here and playing well as he did early. And
I know it's going to be forgotten. And I know
it's forgotten by me because I just think of where
they're at with him and how frustrating it's been at
many times the last couple of years. But I don't
know that they're where they are now unless Randall comes
there in twenty twenty, has the Great Year and they're

(29:27):
able to use that as the building block.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
Yeah, I mean watched him for years, right, you and
I sitting here in the chair, going back Lakers to
the Pelicans to the time he shows up with the
next second year. He's a twenty four and ten guy,
and every night he's bringing it field goal percentages in
the high forties, and then he has the forty one
percent year and it raises the eyebrow like okay, And
then there's times where the want to the grit as

(29:52):
it were, doesn't quite match the Thibodeau style like the
rest of his teammates. Right, it's a different, different fit.
And now they're hoping that Carling Anthony Towns comes in
and he's that guy and you get that juice and
he's ready to fill in and check all these boxes
as it rolls in. I know people in Minnesota, I've
already seen a couple of my friends that you know
work back there, just like, what the hell, man, this

(30:14):
is a gut punch. We loved Devengenzo and all, but
come on, what are you doing to us. You're taking
some of the heart and soul out of this squad.
And reports are from the Anthony Towns Karl Anthony Towns
camp that he was Donne kind of shocked that this
came to fruition. Wonder how long it's been in the offing.
But that's a whole other story as we get ready

(30:34):
for camp. But to your point, yeah, I mean, you
have to have a building block, something that looks like
it's a stabilizer, and Randall looked like he had become
that guy to at least be all right, we can
now start building Brunson, you know, and dad working for
the team didn't hurt. Yeah, no, you know, I kind
of looked that way where Elton Brand really did that
for the Clippers, where the Clippers were manufacturing running through

(30:56):
players and then he came here and signed an extension.
So I'm staying it's fine here and Elton Brand, Okay,
that was the he became the center of the franchise.
And you want to say the quote rise of the
Clippers where they went from laughingstock to being at least
a hey, we can make it the second playoffs like
it started there. That was the center of the franchise
they got and that and now what they've enjoyed the
last decade has come off of that. So sometimes those

(31:18):
players get forgotten. I mean, again forgotten by me because
the last couple of years with Julie's right, but I
go back. I want to give him credit for that.

Speaker 1 (31:25):
I'm one hundred percent now a guy want to give
credit because he's gonna give us all the big scores
of the night. In sports, it's special delivery, Steve to Sager.
If you want to say, show hey Toni, four hundred
total bases a good season, Steve de Saga, Now four
hundred total updates. But Fox Sports Radio and we are
only in mid September. You have a long wait. You

(31:47):
maybe get to get to five hundred updates by the
end of the year. I believe it's.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
More than that.

Speaker 5 (31:51):
Actually, show hey, O Toni with four hits, four RBIs
tonight as the Dodgers, who won at Colorado eleven to four,
and Dodger manager Dave Roberts said before in the Sea
game he'll be resting some of his regulars every day
this weekend to finish the regular season, but not show
Hey Otani.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
He plans to have Otani as the DH all three games.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
Otani tonight with his fifty fourth homer, his fifty seventh
stolen base of the year. He's batting three oh nine,
but the Padres Luis Arias is doing okay as well.
How about a three fourteen average after three hits, and
the Padres have just won at Arizona five to three,
four runs in the top of the first held.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
That mean, why I.

Speaker 1 (32:29):
Tell you Siva wherever Riah's winds up next year winning
the batting title to make.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
It four for four.

Speaker 5 (32:36):
The Padres are going to host a wild card series
next week that was just decided, and now the race
for the last two wild card spots in the ed
L is essentially a.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Three way tie.

Speaker 5 (32:49):
Same record for the Mets and Atlanta, who could be
facing each other in a makeup double header on Monday,
and about the same record for Arizona. After the home
loss tonight, Merril Kelly, who had been five zero, took
this ol. The Mets lost eight to four at Milwaukee.
Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez left with backspasms. Atlanta was a
winner three nothing over Kansas City, but the Royals clinched

(33:10):
the last wildcard spot in the American League when Minnesota
lost again. Baltimore won at Minnesota seven to two, so
the Twins are out. Detroit won at six straight game
Tigers clinched a playoff berth beating the White Sox four
to one. The White Sox record thirty nine and one
twenty one. They passed the nineteen sixty two Mets for
most losses in a single season since nineteen hundred and

(33:33):
by the way, the Cubs today beat Cincinnati won nothing.
That game lasted an hour and forty eight minutes, the
fastest Major League game since twenty ten, with the wind.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Blowing in at Wrigley Field.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
A reminder on Sunday, all the MLB games will be
starting at about three pm Eastern Time. The MLB regular
season ends on Sunday, foremost to the playoffs start on Tuesday.
The Knicks are acquiring Karl Anthony Towns from Minnesota. USA
golfers were swept in all five matches at the President's Cup,
so the international team tied it up five to five
in Montreal. Two wild finishes In college football, Seventh ranked Miami,

(34:09):
still undefeated, escaped at home against Virginia Tech thirty eight
thirty four. Virginia Tech's hail Mary td pass on the
final play was overturned after review. Rutgers is four and
oh after beating Washington twenty one eighteen, Washington's kicker went
one for four on field goal attempts, missing from forty
two yards from thirty seven at pnd from fifty five yards.

(34:32):
Dallas linebacker Micah Parson suffered a high ankle spraind in
last night's win, and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence at the
Cowboys could miss at least a month with a sprain.
Food back to you, Thank.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Coming up next, it is time for Upset Special Picks
of the Weekend in the NFL, I put my ten
and two records so far.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
On the line. Let's go ten and oh in games.
I don't pick the Rams, so I will tell you this.
So you staying away from Bears, Rams, the Rams, that's
for sure. Who do we like? That's next Fox. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (35:42):
Five second dance party for the next trade, cause we're
going to the final.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
Five. What they're doing to you Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike trying to bait you Henamous Brunson. Hey, today,
Brunson is not part of the trade. Sure, he's not.
He's not. Charles No, is that? Yes? Charles broce it out,
Charles Bronson DJ. Clearly a dirty dozen type deal here
involving No, it's not nicely done. Someone has a death wish.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
We'll get back into the Karl Anthony Towns deal with
the Nicks coming up in about ten minutes. But Mike
and I do it every week here. We have her
upset special picks in the NFL. We gave her upset
special pick in college football last hour. I am putting
my ten and two records so far on the line.
Ask me where a record is in games. I didn't
pick the Rams.

Speaker 2 (36:31):
Watching record in games where the Rams were not involved. Ten. No,
there you go. Ah, I'm sitting at thirty one and
seventeen against the number in the NFL for the year.
Let's go, buddy nice all right? So here we go.
So why don't you kick it off them your first upset? Well,
I'm gonna go to Monday night football. You and I
will be on air breaking it down at Detroit. Give
me Seattle latest line. They are getting three and a half.

(36:56):
This line open way back in the day at minus six.
You've seen the movement and why because the Detroit offense
is not humming along, and you've got a Seattle defense
that's coming in strong, Zach Sharviona in Walker's still with
an injury, but you've got the triad of receivers and
your guy Gino Smith leading the way. Give me the
Seahawks on the road. Gen you know, Gino having a

(37:17):
pretty nice start to this, to a nice start.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
The bad loss last week notwithstanding, I will take Tampa
Bay getting too over the Eagles. Remember, no matter how
good things look for the Eagles, they are always one
step away from absolute and total.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
Disaster, not necessarily getting the pass rush they anticipated either
or not at all.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
Tampa Bay. Look, it was an eye opener against Denver
last week.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
I was stunned. Was this the game?

Speaker 1 (37:42):
They were flat? It happens to teams. Tampa Bay is
still loaded. This is gonna be a big get well week.
You saw they did in the playoffs last year. Tampa
Bay is a bad matchup for Philadelphia. I'm really surprised.
This is the spread and Tampa's getting points, but they're
getting two. I'll take them. I don't think I'll need them,
but I'll still take the two points.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
Get the Eagles trade for Reddick can get him back
in the lineup by Sunday, Probably not at this point. No,
all right, let's go down the road and the roster
a little bit more. Buffalo and Baltimore. Baltimore two and
a half point favorites at home, forty six and a
half the total. Give me the continuity, the consistency of

(38:19):
what you've seen from Buffalo. Little afraid that Derrick Henry
and the power running style is able to exploit the
fact that the Bills are missing a couple of key
contributors to the defense of the linebacking position. Still give
me Josh Allen and the offense to do just enough
to get over the look at.

Speaker 1 (38:35):
You, Josh allenbody, and pretty soon the Bills are not
going to be underdogs in any games they play.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
It is a little bit surprising that we're still at
this point, but yeah, here we are. I am going
this is weird because you know what I say, he's
enjoying a great start. Yeah, see me in week eight.
Wait are you going back to the well see me
in week eight as if Sam Darnold is still great.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
But give me the Vikings getting three over green Bay.

Speaker 2 (39:02):
It's a week to week parlay with the Vikings with you.
I did it last. The Vikings have the best defense
in the NFL. That's really w is absolutely killing. They
have the best defense in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
And with Green Bay and you have Jordan Love the
injury still if he looks like he's gonna play, but
it doesn't matter. This defense is absolutely rolling and they're
getting points.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
I'm not thrilled.

Speaker 1 (39:28):
I don't like taking road dogs, but defense travels and
Minnesota has the best defense in the NFL. You'll see
it this week. That's the real story. It'll be enough
for Sam Dar who's nearing the end of his fifteen minutes.
But give me the Vikings plus three.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Well, you still have the question of whether Jordan Love
is gonna be cleared or not. I would still lean
to the idea that with a buy coming here in
short order for them, that they're gonna try to get
through right, willis leading them to a couple of wins.
Run game has been good spread Originally when this line first,
one on the board was four and a half, sitting
two and a half because of that level of uncertainty.

(40:02):
But Jordan Addison, he's coming back. Maybe Alexander is able
to erase some of Justin Jefferson, but you gotta deal
with the rest of that receiving cores in the run game.
And to the point about Flores, I mean mixing up coverages.
They've always been a good sack team right for fantasy purposes.
They were always a top defense that you can get
after here and now you're seeing those dividends because they're

(40:24):
absolutely terrorizing opponents. Look for more of it. I think
again this week.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
I'm telling you, man, as long as they're playing like this,
they're getting points. Yeah, I'll take the best of defense
in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Am. I gonna trt Jordan Love out here trying to
test his mobility against this defense. Hell no, and Malik Willis.
At some point, we've got to have some sort of normalization,
don't we.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
Yeah, good good luck this week. Good luck this week
against that defense. So there it is our upset special
picks of the week in the NFL Mike and Ives picks.
Coming up next, we get back into the biggest breaking
story of the night, the big NBA trade that has
rocked the off season. That's next.
