Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome inside final hour tonight the Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Mucho, mucho, hobo double.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I gotta say this, it's a it's a bit of
a difficult night for me, and I want to tell
you Why've been Wait no, no, no, I've been holding
it back till till this time. It's been a difficult day,
a difficult day for my dad.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Our streak is over the MLB. The streets hit and
at six my dad picked cal Rawley today, who went
oh for four in the Mariner's ten to one loss.
So our streak ends at six. We have to go
back to zero tomorrow to try to win that. Five
and a half million dollars went.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
For the Big the Big Dumper to seventy five on
the year thirty two home run sixty nine RBI fan favorite.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
And he took a big dump on you.

Speaker 5 (01:21):
Yeah, no, he did it, but it was not good.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
It was he struck out three times too.

Speaker 5 (01:27):
He came up in the ninth.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Actually that was yesterday. Sorry, he came up in the ninth.
I'm going, come on, it's ten. I know it's ten
to nothing. Just just an opposite field base hit or
something now grinded out the second to end it.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I like that opposite field base hit.

Speaker 5 (01:40):
It's still a base hit.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Doesn't matter matter what he pulls it or just just
do it.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Come on, man, so so oh for three with a walk?

Speaker 6 (01:48):
Man?

Speaker 1 (01:49):
And what I said that My wife said to me.
She was, man, your dad's been killing you with this game.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
I go, what do you mean?

Speaker 1 (01:54):
She goes, well, twice he forgot to put him in.
Now the streak stop because of him. And I go, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Why wouldn't you go like Otani?

Speaker 5 (02:05):
That's what I Okay, okay, it.

Speaker 7 (02:07):
Was like a great BONDI supposed to blow the see
bloody is I could only you know, I could only
say it so much like when I said to my dad,
I said, well, yeah, I mean, hey, Otani in Colorado
this week.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
We baby just go with Otani every day, Give me
Otani today, hoping that maybe he'd get the hint and
take Otanni the next day.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
And I take no, no, no, col Rawly, Oh dad,
come on.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
How do you take over the admin for your dad?

Speaker 5 (02:34):
There? I might have to.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I mean, really, what am I gonna do? I'm just
gonna I'm just gonna, like he's gonna see that. What
am I gonna ping pong back and forth between Otani
and Judge, Like what else is it?

Speaker 5 (02:45):
Otani? Judge Otani? Judge Otani. I'm just gonna do.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
That one bats like.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah, okay, yeah, once in a while, sure we could
do that once in a what once in a while.
I'm okay with that. But I'm like, that's you know,
I'm just but I mean, look it's it's yeah, yeah,
I mean so far I was three for three.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
My dad is yeah, he's like two for five.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Yeah, yeah, no, no, it's fine. And I told him,
I said, you picked somebody to start tomorrow, You pick
somebody starting to start started up tomorrow again, go get
it with somebody news.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
So I don't know who's gonna pick it tomorrow I
have no idea.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, no, that's tough.

Speaker 5 (03:20):
It was tough tomorrow the Pirates.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah no, yeah, Alonso or Hey, Soto's hot too, now,
you know, so between Alonzo, Sodo.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
And Lindor, like, you know, I don't think I can
go wrong tomorrow night. But h you know, but I
love my dad. My Dad's gonna pick tomorrow to start
it up again.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
It's fine, so you'll go, uh, you'll still have to
start over for Saturday.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well that's the beauty of it, because I mean, you know,
part of what we're talking about this hour is unreachable
heights and feats we may never see again. You guys
getting beyond a weekend, your beat the streak effort.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
So you're long six our longest. It's pretty good though.
I mean, that's a good start. My dad said, the
leader right now is at forty. You know wait, the leader, yeah,
he s after he said he said he looked at
the leaderboard yesterday, the leader that there was somebody at
forty really there?

Speaker 5 (04:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yeah, but I think I don't think anybody until that
guy from last week made it past fifty.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Do they give you the option to cash out at forty?

Speaker 2 (04:22):
No? No, no, there's no cash out here.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
At some point, I think at some point they you
would say, hey, I'm abou, I'm at fifty. Do you
sure you want to keep going here? Do you want
to pay me a couple of million? And I'll stop.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I would say, with the number of people that have
tried and failed at this game, they're going to bank
on you finding the goose.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
So you just got to get past fifty six.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
Yeah, yes, you got to get past fifty six.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Wow, get fifty The guy getting the fifty was the
closest anybody's gotten so.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Far, and he got zero dollars.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, I know, he got nothing. He got he got
a bunch of notorieties. So maybe he got a little
bit of love off of it and maybe some free
tickets from some people. And you know how it goes.
Oh you poor guy, let me send you some stuff.
I mean, that's how it works.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah, that's probably that's what happened to him. You get nothing,
you get to fifty seven, it's fifty seven or nothing.
That's what it is.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
That is a hell of a game.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
It is. It is. It's a lot of fun to do.
It's just you know, not with your dad, but well
but Here's the.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Thing though, as I've learned in my life, like, and
I always tell my friend, Like my best friend and
I used to do fantasy together all the time. Then
then we moved away and we kind of grew apart
from it. But I would always say to him, like, hey,
who do you think for our final flex spot?

Speaker 5 (05:32):
You know, like, who do you think here?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Ah?

Speaker 1 (05:34):
You know, I kind of like so and so I
don't know that. I like, so, okay, let's go with them.
He you sure you really like this other guy? We
picked him earlier in the draft to go. No, it's
fine because I could go either way. And if this
guy fails, I can blame you. So I'm okay. Like
if if I don't do if something happens to my team,
as long as I have somebody to blame and it's
not me, Like, I'm good with that. Like, I'm okay

(05:55):
with that. I can say, well, it was your fault clearly,
and I go to bed with a clear conscience.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, old rule of thumb. I mean we learned this
long before we were told this by Chris Carter. I mean,
you gotta have a fall guy. Yeah, oh yeah, under man, everybody,
I mean that's the tenet of how many books and
movie series you gotta have a fall guy?

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Uh, Now I don't know what my dad's gonna go
with tomorrow. He's gonna text me. He mad he gout
years old today, Happy birthday, Derek Jeter talking about guy
that hit from every lineup position. Fifty one for Jeter,
not fifty fifty one. He was not fifty today. That
was That was a thing.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
He's creeping on, dude.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Come on, I'll take the over. He handed out fifty
baskets over the course of all.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Just meant today.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
He's slowing down a little bit. You know, Yeah, you know,
I I went from thinking three thousand hits. I'm chasing
the Wilts record.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
That's I'm trying to get whoa whoa married man children.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
But speaking of marks to get to we are five
days away from absolute baseball history thanks to what we
saw earlier today in the Dodgers three to one win
over the Rockies.

Speaker 8 (07:10):
Now the payoff pitch strike three, three to.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Go Dodgers TV on the call, Clayton Kershaw now three
strikeouts away from becoming the twentieth member of the three
thousand strikeout club. He will get there, probably in the
first thing against the White Sox.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
His next start.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
I think that's I think that's even money to get
there in the first end of to strike out the
side with the White Sox.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
You know what, I hate you he might be able.
I can't argue it too vociferously.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
Could he get to thirty five hundred in his next
start against the White Sox?

Speaker 2 (07:51):
It now, I mean, that's fuzzy math.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Now, a couple of big things coming off this right
because you think about like this, let's get you thinking
about more tech and it's a really weird conversation. But obviously, look,
three thousand strikeouts is such a huge number. To get
to the three thousand strikeout club again, only nineteen people
in Major League Baseball history have gotten there. It's taken
Clayton Kershaw, who has been in you know, he's been

(08:17):
injured a lot, and so okay, you know, maybe he
could have had you know, another few hundred, but realize,
one of the most unbreakable records in all of baseball.
You know, we talk about Cy Young five hundred eleven
career wins, like, forget it. You can win twenty games
a year for twenty years you're still one hundred short, right,
So I mean that that's how much that's an unbreakable record.
But Nolan Ryan fifty seven hundred strikeouts, Like I mean,

(08:39):
he's like Kershaw is getting to a level that like
nineteen people that have ever played the game have gotten to.
And he's got a little bit more than half of
Nolan Ryan's totals, just a little bit more than as
dominant as he's been first ballot, all of favor. It's
got a little bit more than half what Nolan Ryan did.
I mean that that that's not that record will never

(09:00):
be broken, no chance.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
First year came up play participated in twenty two games,
twenty one starts in two thousand and eight. All these
years later, here we are. We talk about bullpen management,
age and monitoring, and certainly for Kershaw, we've had a
number of instances during our tenure on the show of
all right, is this the last we've seen him? And

(09:23):
he keeps battling back. All Right? You want to talk
about a guy, tenacity, love of game, love of family,
everything that he is. He is, you know, the epitome
of what we grew up calling, quote a ballplayer. But
now now you're at the point where two hundred what
he's just shy with a little little fewer than twenty

(09:44):
eight hundred innings pitch, so better than a strikeout per
inning for his career. And now on the precipice of
three thousand, I mean the long journey because we see
so many guys come and go, so many pitchers that
we get excited about, Like I loved it. We talked
about it Zurowski versus schemes and wishing, wanting, hoping that
fifteen years from now we're talking about grand wind, total

(10:07):
strikeout totals and electrifying crowds. But nowadays, if we get
past year six or seven with the guy we've won, right,
that's a career at this point. Plus when we're talking
on the wind side of things, to add that just
to the mix, you don't get to go past six
innings very often.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
But what if Kershaw started doing advil commercials like Nolan Ryan.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Oh maybe maybe advill's a big thing. He's pitching when
he's forty five years old. Yeah, I feel good.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
He might break the record.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Levering his left arm into a giant bucket of rice
and all those other things.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
Yeah, let's go now, here's a weird conversation because this
gets you into your mortality when you start thinking of
things you'll never see again in your life. Right, I mean,
now I'm in my early fifties. I like to think that, Hey, okay,
we've go got some time to see a lot of things.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
But I don't know no matter how old you are.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Look, Kershaw is gonna get three thousand strikeouts in his
next start, right, and most likely Chris Sale is gonna
get there as well. Right, Sales got about twenty five hundred.
He's thirty six, but he's still pitching at a really
high level. So as long as he's healthy, and Chris
Sale's been a healthy guy, I don't see him having
too much difficulty getting there. Being if he was thirty nine,

(11:20):
I would say, I don't know, but thirty six still
pitching at a high level. Yeah, I think he gets
there sometime late twenty twenty seven. So we'll see Chris
Sale get that.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
But yeah, I mean just those number of starts though,
Like he's a guy I'm nervous for. Right, he was
fantastic last year, twenty nine starts. He hadn't thrown more
than twenty twenty games in a year since twenty nineteen
before that. Yeah, so and now you have you know,
he's dominating and suddenly he's on the il with a
rib injury. So he's had a crazy ass career and

(11:51):
I wish the best for him. He's one of my
favorites to watch with the White Sox back in the day.
Still salty that he was no longer a member of them.
But all of that to say, you know that last
four hundred change ain't gonna come easy.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
No, you could have had a few more if he
didn't cut up that jersey that time. And I'm not
gonna say, okay, uh, baseball gods will smite you. So Sale,
all right, Sale will probably get there. Right, I'm saying
Sale will probably get there. But after that, that might
be the last person we see for the next twenty years,
maybe even longer than that. Right, Like John palm Roy said, oh,

(12:24):
Paul Skeens might have a chance to do it, And
he's right, Paul Skins may have a chance to but
you're talking about now extrapolating him over the next twenty years,
and maybe he doesn't get there, especially with less innings.
It's not like Paul Skeens is gonna go seven to
eight innings and deeper than any other.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Pictures, especially the Pirates, you know, right, especially when he
goes to a winner, they're gonna have a bullpen and
they paid.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
Yeah, just got six innings is fine. Paul just did
seven innings maybe, but he's not gonna go that deep.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
The next guy on the list is Garrett Cole, who,
by the time he comes back, is gonna be thirty
five and about seven hundred and fifty strikeouts away. Like,
Garrett Cole's not gonna get there, and after that there's nobody, man,
So I mean, unless you're talking about extrapolating Paul Skans
over twenty years, like that's it.

Speaker 5 (13:11):
We may have seen the last.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Guy get to three thousand strikeers, just we may have
seen the last guy get to three hundred wins in
Major League baseball, Guys don't win twenty games of a year,
twenty games year twenty ago. You win fifteen games, like, wow,
that's a pretty good year. Fifteen is the new twenty,
Like fifteen is awesome. Like what I may have seen
the last time we'll ever see three hundred wins and
three thousand strikeouts after sale, who has a you know,

(13:35):
a pretty decent, a better than even chance, I would say,
to do it.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, I mean for Skiings and all these guys, you
just have so many years that you're trying to extrapolate
and say, yeah, they're gonna be at this clip. And
it's fun to theorize because that means we got a
lot of great games ahead of us and these giant performances.
But again, the game continues to evolve. Planning on anybody
to go fifteen to twenty years healthy is insaneanity. Uh,

(14:00):
in this day and age, with the way guys throw,
I mean you got Kershaw two hundred and fifteen wins
to grab that column for a second. Suzer's at two sixteen,
and then you've got Justin Verlanders, the leader in the
clubhouse right now at to sixty two.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
Yeah, but he sucks.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
Ye, that's too much. If he's not good.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
If he had a congratulations on having another kid, no,
that's great. But if he had twenty more wins, I
would say, you know, he might have a chance. Like
he if he was a two eighty right now, it's
say ooh, he's got announce it. But to sixty two
he's got.

Speaker 4 (14:33):
I don't think he's won a game this year.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
Yeah he's uh, that's too much to get to.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Yeah he gets a two seventy five A way is
a lot like two seventy five might be where I
would say, okay, maybe he tops out of two seventy five.
But this is where we start talking about the metrics
and where our new benchmarks are.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
And certainly it's an interesting point for all of those
you know, haughty Call of Fame voters as to what
their thresholds for greatness are.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
So just think about that the last time you enjoy Kershaw,
watch I'm gonna watch. Make sure I watch Kershaw, make
sure I watch Sale because again, that may be the
last time we see stuff like this in our lifetime.

Speaker 5 (15:10):
And that's something.

We'll do it. You want to do it, we gotta
do it.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
I don't want to.

Speaker 5 (18:18):
Now, I don't want to.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
So the world, or.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
At least most of the A listers in the world,
are heading to Venice, Italy for the Jeff Bezos Lauren
Sanchez wedding this weekend that supposedly is going to.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
Cost between forty.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Five and fifty five million dollars to put it, just
to put the wedding on flying everybody in. There's private
planes coming in all the time, there's knots.

Speaker 9 (18:46):
It would be less if they got wedding Prime.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
Oh that's true. Yeah, you're right, Yeah, wedding Prime is
not going to get This is.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
All sorts of merchandising and enterprise that he robbed America of.

Speaker 5 (18:57):
So down with Bezos.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Can you guarantee me the delivery of this wedding by
Friday at six yes, so, and there's lots of people
in Venice that are upset. There's there's a big portion
of the populations.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Like all they're doing is ruining.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Are the the money coming in and the and the
tourism and and they're you know, bringing all this unhealthy
air in with all the planes landing.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
And all this kind of crazy stuff.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
Right, So it's not like everybody loves this wedding going on,
but all the big people, all the big A listers
are landing in Venice for this wedding.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
So say A listers, you really mean like yeah, bad people.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (19:37):
Well that that will wow.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
That will be to be determined because this is the
Jeff Bezos Lauren Sanchez game called the Battle.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
For Good and Evil as Prosper Yes, so it's titled Yes,
it's definitely went down to Georgia, except in a game form.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
Uh, this is going to be the attending not attending game.
According to Business journal I, the of the A listers
who are attending this, including many people from the sporting world,
who are attending this wedding. So your job is to
tell me are they attending or are they not attending?
Playing as myself, Mike Harmon Isaac Low and kron King

(20:15):
Kershaw and Alex Tyscher.

Speaker 5 (20:17):
Are you ready to go?

Speaker 3 (20:18):
I'm confused, Jason.

Speaker 6 (20:19):
Yes, he's worth almost three hundred billion, right, correct?

Speaker 3 (20:23):
Why is he getting married?

Speaker 5 (20:28):
Maybe? I don't know. Did he do it for love?

Speaker 3 (20:33):
Did he do it for When you worth three hundred billion,
you don't fall in love.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
I assume there's going to be some court and some
sort of prenuptial agreement.

Speaker 5 (20:41):
I assume there's going to be, but I don't.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
I thought he got divorced with somebody else and she
took money.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
He did, Yeah, and a lot more. Yeah, he's worth
three hundred billion.

Speaker 1 (20:51):

What segue? Look at that in peak form? That is
indeed what happened Jason to most of the Atlanta Braves
hitters on Thursday night, as the Mets shut about four
to nothing to take over first place in the National
League East by half a game over the Phillies. So
the Mets five pitchers combined for a three hit shutout

(32:22):
with eleven strikeouts. However, the bad news Mets starting pitcher
Griffin Canning had to leave the game due to a
non contact left achilles injury in the third inning. Earlier Thursday,
the Los Angeles Dodgers one of Colorado three to one,
show hey O tani is twenty eighth home run, tying
him with Aaron Judge for second in the majors, four
behind Seattle's cal Raleigh. Clayton Kershaw struck out five and

(32:45):
six innings to improve to.

Speaker 9 (32:46):
Four to zero.

Speaker 10 (32:47):
Kershaw now just three strikeouts away from three thousand in
his career. And the NBA Draft concluded on Thursday with
the second round. The selections of see On James the
number thirty three overall, to Charlotte, and then Tyresee Procter
to Cleveland at forty nine overall meant that dukes entire

(33:08):
starting five from last season got drafted back to you guys.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Well, which means they underachieved because obviously them and Rutgers
with all those draft picks should go farther in the tournament, thank.

Speaker 10 (33:18):
You, and and they are not going to the Bezos
Sanchez wedding.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
Ace Bailey was told he would not work out for
Bezos and Sanchez before the wedding coming up next. Now
that the NBA Draft is in our rearview mirror, we're
setting out for the off season. Two big bold predictions
for two high profile teams going into the off season.

Speaker 5 (33:40):
