Auckland bars are heaving as Metallica prepares to rock Eden Park tonight - its first Kiwi concert in 15 years.

About 40,000 visitor nights have been booked for the sell-out concert, with the city’s hotels at 100 percent capacity.

Roads near Eden Park are closed until midnight.

Kingsland's Full-Time Bar manager, Shane Don, says business is booming this afternoon.

"We're stacked in here, everyone's kitted out like bogans, I'm kitted out like a bogan, and I honestly feel like I've walked back 30 years."

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Yeah, this is what's happening tonight. If you've looked around
the center of Auckland, if you're on Auckland, you looked
around and you go, why has west Aukland come to town? Well,
that's because of Metallica, one of the world's biggest metal bands,
performing one night only at Eden Park. Auckland's accommodation is full.
The buses heading to the venue are probably full. The
bars are definitely full. Shane On is the general manager

(00:26):
of the full Time Bar in Kingsland and with us.
Hello Shane, Hi mate, how busy is it with you?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
How good? I feel like I've stepped back into the eighties,
except everyone's in black, including me. I'm glad I got
the right phone call. We're black this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Yeah? Have you are?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
You?

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Are you fully kitted out like a Bogan?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
We're stacked, absolutely stacked in here. Everyone's kitted out like Bogan.
So I'm getting out like a Bogan and I honestly
feel like I've walked back thirty years.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
What at the Bogans drinking?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Well, there's there's plenty of liquid amber and a whole
lot of check Daniels.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Yeah, I'm not surprised by that.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Can you hear the concert from your pub?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Do you reckon?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I can actually yeah, out on the back on the
back deck, I reckon. I'm closer to the stage in
the other end of Ena Park, so you know it's
going to I'll be sitting out there myself having a
little listen, but it's going to be awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, Because I was just wondering for people who might
want to, you know, go on, go on the cheap
and still have the experience, but without paying for a ticket.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Can they come around to your place.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
We're always welcome to come and have a have an
ale with us here and and then and listen to
the sound. But the whole of Kingsland's just rocking. It's
just such a great vibe. And seez we need more
of these, don't we.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Oh tell you tell me about it. How has it
been lately? Has it been okay this year for concerts?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
No? Not really. I mean we've we've had we've had
a couple, but they're all going to the smaller places,
you know. I mean, obviously it's difficult when these big
guys come to town. They have to shut down a
little bit earlier, and it makes things difficult. But they
look it looks like things may open up in that area,
and the vibe is just awesome. It's a great time
and brains bug it off. And yeah, we need a

(02:09):
lot more of these, I think. Yeah, Auckland definitely does.
The New Zealand definitely don't need them. Hospitality needs to
get a good push. These, these help, These help big
time too, right.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Are you all in for this? You know, expanded concerts
at Eden Park.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Have to be I mean like hospitality is, you know,
as the livelihood in some cases to a lot of people.
And you know, all our youngins grow up going through
hospitality and and working in bars and restaurants and so forth,
and we play a big part in the in the
community as well. So yeah, I'm I'm fully supportive of
anything that's not just concerts, but anything that's going to

(02:43):
come into Eden Park and and bring bring people to town.
It's just such a good vibe. I mean, people forget
about the vibe it does smiles on people's dolls.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
That's great, brilliant stuff.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Okay, I'm loath to do this, but top.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Metallica song, nothing else matters. Good from you, Shane, I
love it.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Shane on Full Time Full time bar general manager ants
how fast are you?

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Who? You got it? Or you can see answers trying.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Maybe I should fast forward through.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
It to that.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
No, this is the good bit. No, because it's but
this is the bit that people like me like because
it's not too stressful. It's when they start hitting those
guitars it's stressful. Here's some numbers for Ukay. They have
hundreds of speakers up tonight. They have one hundred and
fifty decibels per output used in the show. They have sticks.
This is what the speakers set up? Is it sticks?
They have twenty cabinet speakers, ten subwiffers. There will be

(03:38):
one hundred and twenty speakers around the stage, forty eight
speakers in the back, forty hanging subwhiffers.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Why do you make the beautiful music away? There we go?
Thank you?

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Seven to two floor wedges, forty eight on the ground
under the stage. It's going to if you're there, you're
going to be You know what I'm doing when I
go there, I'm taking my little earplugs to pop them
in like a nanna and you're going to need to
do that too. Here that you don't sound well, I
hope you're okay. I'm fine. I sang too much at
Lennie on Saturday night. I'm going to tell you about
that shortly, and I'm not going to be singing at

(04:08):
Metallica tonight.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
There it is.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
How much are you firstening for being there tonight? Yes,
Metallica five twenty.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
