Il 13 giugno 1886, il corpo del re Ludovico II di Baviera viene trovato senza vita nel Lago di Starnberg, accanto a quello del suo psichiatra Bernhard von Gudden, in circostanze misteriose e mai del tutto chiarite. Solo tre giorni prima, Ludovico era stato dichiarato pazzo e deposto da un complotto ordito probabilmente da suo zio Luitpold, interessato a prenderne il trono. Il re, esteta visionario e megalomane, si era indebitato costruendo castelli fiabeschi ispirati a Wagner e al “regno estetico” immaginato da Schiller, finendo per destabilizzare politicamente l’intera Baviera. Recluso nel castello di Berg, dopo due passeggiate con Gudden, Ludovico sparisce tra la nebbia e viene ritrovato ore dopo annegato, con indosso il mantello cerimoniale. Le ipotesi si rincorrono: suicidio, omicidio, fuga fallita, complotto di stato? Nulla è certo, ma quel che resta è una figura tragica e romantica, il “re delle fiabe” trasformato in martire, e una morte che profuma di leggenda.
