All right, just before we diveinto the Chicago Cubs 2024

(01:37):
season, I want to let you knowthat Baseball Classics scores
all the players in Major LeagueBaseball history, 1901 to
present, and the teams as well.
So I'm going to share with youhow we scored the 2024 Chicago
Cubs Scores all the players inMajor League Baseball history,
1901 to present, and the teamsas well.
So I'm going to share with youhow we scored the 2024 Chicago
Cubs.
We're going to look at thebatters, we're going to look at

(01:59):
the pitchers and we'll just lookat the top players on the team
overall.
So, starting with batting, their batting average and ISO
performance was definitely belowaverage.
The good news for the Cubstheir OPS and their ability to
hit doubles was above average, triples, far below average, and
same with home runs.
Now you would think, playingWrigley Field, this team at
least would be above averagewhen it comes to hitting home
runs.
But again, their power numbersare are not very impressive.

(02:21):
Total bases another problem forthe Cubs not reaching base
enough to move the runners over.
Actually, their ability to geton base via the walk is really
good, but it's moving runnersaround which again you'll hear
coming up in this episode.
It has been a problem for theCubs.
The slugging average is belowaverage for this ball.

(02:45):
Club Runs created runs again.
They just have a problem withagain moving base runners around
once they do get on base.
Their base sailing and theirbase running capability is not
very good.
The good news is for them onthe fielding side, they're a
pretty good defensive team whenit comes to catching the ball.
They're not going to make toomany errors in the field.

(03:07):
Now, on the pitching side, theirERA I mean really all their
pitching was pretty good overall.
Where they were weak, like alot of teams complete games and
shutouts and then their walks.
They walked too many batters.
They weren't the worst in theleague but they walked too many.
They were pretty good in otherareas, but another area of
weakness definitely was theirbullpen Not have a lot of save

(03:31):
opportunities or convert saveopportunities for this 2024
Chicago Cubs team.
So these are all areas thatthey really need to take a look
at and address overall for theball club.
As far as the top players on theteam, the top batters rank, we
rank them the top eight battersfor the Cubs, in other words the

(03:52):
top position players.
So we have Happ, suzuki, horner, then Dansby, swanson only
fourth, then Bellinger fifth.
So the Cubs of course lookingto trade Bellinger this
offseason.
He had a good season, but itwasn't a great season, so
they're not going to get whatthey may have hoped for,
especially based on the sizecontract that Bellinger has.

(04:14):
The sixth best position playerfor the Cubs was Bush, then Crow
, armstrong and then Morrell.
So those are the top eightplayers for the Cubs.
Top eight pitchers Hodge, imanaga, leiter Jr, miller,
steele, brown, neris and WesNeske, who was just recently

(04:36):
dealt in that Carl Tucker trade.
So that's a look.
The Cubs overall team actuallywas pretty good.
I mean, their overall scorewasn't too bad, but again they
have some areas they really needto work on to improve.
And now, with that, let's goahead and dive in to the Chicago
Cubs 2024 season and look aheadto 2025.

(04:58):
All right, the 2024 ChicagoCubs Building for the Future.
This season for them, this pastseason, 2024, will go down as
one of promise and perseverance.
The team entered the seasonwith high hopes, eager to build
upon the strides they made in2023.
As a blend of young talent andestablished veterans on their

(05:21):
ball club, the Cubs had themakings of a contender.
Yet as the season unfolded, they found themselves falling
just short of a playoff berth.
Despite the disappointment, the2024 season served as a
stepping stone in the Cubs'continued rebuilding efforts.
Now let's go back to the2023-2024 offseason, which was a

(05:45):
pivotal one for the ChicagoCubs as they looked to build on
their strong 2023 season andstrengthen their roster for a
postseason push.
And despite some promisingprogress, the Cubs made
relatively few moves in theoffseason, which ultimately left
some gaps that would becomeapparent during the 2024 season.

(06:08):
Now, the most significantoffseason move was the
re-signing of Cody Ballinger.
Ballinger had an excellent 2023campaign after signing a
one-year deal with the Cubs, showing flashes of his former
MVP form and playing a key rolein the team's offense.
His ability to hit for power, drive in runs and play stellar

(06:32):
defense in center field made himone of the Cubs' most valuable
players.
Given his success in 2023, theCubs decided to extend him on a
multi-year deal, securing acenterpiece player for their
lineup going forward.
However, the Cubs' otheroffseason moves were limited and

(06:53):
they did not add significantpieces to address other key need
areas.
This lack of activity left somecritical gaps on the roster,
especially at third base andcatcher positions, that became
problematic for the team overthe course of the season.
The Cubs were unable to find areliable everyday option at

(07:16):
third base and their catchingsituation lacked stability,
making it difficult to competeconsistently.
Despite these gaps, the Cubs'front office trusted in the
talent they had, includingplayers like Ian Happ, seiya
Suzuki, nico Horner and PatrickWisdom, hoping that the team

(07:39):
would overcome theseshortcomings.
Additionally, the pitchingstaff, with standout players
like Justin Steele and JamisonTyon, were expected to carry the
load.
During the 2024 season, theChicago Cubs made a few notable
moves to strengthen their rosterand push for a playoff spot,

(08:00):
but they did not make any majortrades but focused on improving
some key areas, particularlytheir bullpen.
Dansby Swanson, anotherhigh-profile offseason
acquisition from the year prior, continued to be a key player
for the Cubs in 2024.
Swanson's gold glove caliberdefense at shortstop was crucial

(08:20):
for the Cubs as he contributedwith a consistent bat, providing
depth in both the top and themiddle of the lineup.
The Cubs bullpen saw animportant addition when they
claimed pitcher Jose Cuas offwaivers from the Toronto Blue
Jays in May of 2024.
Cuas was added to provide depthin the bullpen and, while he

(08:42):
did not have a major impact interms of high leverage
situations, his addition addedmuch-needed versatility to the
Cubs relief corps.
Cuas provided some stabilitywhen called upon, but was more
of a depth option during theyear.
Despite these acquisitions, theCubs ultimately fell short of a
playoff spot.
Inconsistent pitching,particularly from the bullpen,

(09:05):
and a lack of timely hitting inkey moments were factors that
held the team back.
While the Cubs had some solidindividual performances,
including from Bellinger andSwanson, they were unable to put
together the consistencynecessary for a postseason berth
.
The Cubs' inability to make theplayoffs in 2024 came down to

(09:28):
several factors.
First and foremost, theirpitching staff, despite some
strong individual performances, lacked the depth to sustain a
postseason push.
Young pitchers like JustinSteele and Hayden Wisniewski
showed promise, but they wereinconsistent at times and the
bullpen wasn't always able tohold leads.

(09:50):
In addition to pitching, theCubs offense, while potent at
times, was streaky.
The team struggled to findconsistency in key situations,
especially when it came todriving in runs with men in
scoring position.
Their power numbers were solid, but they couldn't consistently
string together productiveinnings, often leaving men on

(10:12):
base in crucial moments.
Lastly, the Cubs defense wasnot as sharp as it had been in
previous seasons.
While players like Happ andHorner were solid defensively,
there were too many errors andmisplays that cost the team runs
and this Cubs team.
They couldn't afford to giveaway extra outs, especially in
tight games where every playmattered.

(10:35):
The Chicago Cubs have beennotably active during the 24-25
offseason, executing significantmoves to enhance their roster
for this upcoming 2025 season.
In a major transaction, theCubs acquired all-star
outfielder Kyle Tucker from theHouston Astros.

(10:55):
The deal sent third basemanIsaac Paredes, right-handed
pitcher Hayden Wisniewski andthird base prospect Cam Smith to
the Houston Astros.
Tucker, a three-time All-Star,brings up potent bat and strong
defensive skills to the Cubsoutfield, addressing the team's
need for a consistent offensivepresence.

(11:17):
Concurrently, reports indicatethat the New York Yankees have
shown significant interest inacquiring Ballinger, viewing him
as a potential fit for theirroster.
However, discussions haveencountered challenges,
particularly concerning thefinancial aspects of Ballinger's
contract.
The Cubs are reportedly seekingto cover a substantial portion

(11:38):
of his $52.5 million contract tofacilitate a trade.
To address the catchingposition, the Cubs signed
veteran catcher Carson Kelly toa two-year $11.5 million
contract.
Kelly, who spent the 2024season with the Arizona
Diamondbacks, detroit Tigers andTexas Rangers, is expected to

(11:59):
share catching duties withMiguel Amaya.
In 91 games last season, kellyposted a .238 batting average
with nine home runs and 37 RBIs.
The Cubs have made strategicmoves to enhance their roster
for the 2025 season, includingthe acquisition of Kyle Tucker,
the signing of Carson Kelly andmaintaining financial

(12:22):
flexibility.
The status of Cody Bellingerremains a key factor in the
team's roster composition asthey approach spring
training.
Early projections for the 2025season place the Cubs in a
competitive position within theNL Central.
According to Fangraph's steamerprojections, the Cubs are
expected to finish with an 83-79record, placing them second in

(12:47):
the division behind theMilwaukee Brewers.
Similarly, roto Champsprojections have the Cubs
finishing with an 82-80 record, also positioning them second in
the NL Central.
The NL Central is projected tobe a highly competitive one in
2025.
The Milwaukee Brewers arefavored to lead the division,

(13:08):
with projections indicating a93-69 record.
The St Louis Cardinals andCincinnati Reds are also
expected to be strong contenders, with projected records of
85-77 and 79-83, respectivelyrespectively.
While projections place thembehind the Brewers, the Cubs'
offseason moves have positionedthem as possible contenders for

(13:30):
the division title in 2025.
All right.
Well, that, of course, remainsto be seen as the Cubs continue
their active offseason, andwe'll see what happens with Cody
Ballinger, as this is recorded,on December 16th of
2024.
What will the Cubs get inreturn?

(13:52):
Will they get a solid thirdbaseman to fill that hole and
also some bullpen pitching, astheir starting staff is pretty
good for the Cubs?
So there's still a lot of workfor the Cubs to do.
Getting Carl Tucker in thetrade with the Astros was really
a big catch for the Cubs, sothere's still a lot of work for
the Cubs to do.
Getting Carl Tucker in thetrade with the Astros was really

(14:13):
a big catch for the Cubs.
Will they sign him once hebecomes a free agent or before
that?
We'll see what the Cubs' plansare, of course, in the next year
or so.
All right, that's a wrap forthis Baseball Classics
Diamondcast.
Again, thanks so much fortuning in.
We'll be back with another teamas we look to see how they
performed in 2024, what the gapswere, and look ahead for them

(14:33):
in 2025.
So we'll see you in the nextepisode of Baseball Classics
Diamondcast.
So long, everybody.
