Parents can most help their kids love God by walking the walk and talking the talk (Deuteronomy 6:5-7). The best thing we can do for our kids – for their relationship with God – is to let them see in our lives that we really believe what we say we believe. Our goal should be to love Jesus radically and personally. We ultimately cannot control or produce a love for God in our children; they will choose for themselves. In contrast, one of the worst things we can do is to make our faith simply about going to church. Nothing makes our faith more unappealing to our kids (and others) than to separate our real life and religious life. Another significant thing we can for our kids and their relationship with God is to talk about Him and to create a home environment where they can freely ask faith questions, no matter how challenging they may be. These conversations can become powerful, teachable moments. Unaddressed questions tend to lead to doubt and skepticism in our children; answered questions tend to lead to growth.
