(00:00):
Why writing emails feelsimpossible when you're burned out,
and what to do instead.
If you've ever started from ablank page trying to write, or have
you ever been told by atherapist or coach, hey, why don't
you journal this out?
And you're like, okay, I cantotally do this, but it kind of feels

(00:22):
like a lot in the back of your mind.
So you go to try to write itdown and you're like, why is this
so hard?
Why is it so hard to writedown what I'm thinking that's running
through my head right now?
You're not alone and you'renot broken and there's nothing wrong
with you.
I used to have a coach thatused to tell me, and probably still

(00:44):
does say this, and I believeher, and I do think it's true for
a lot of people, that writingis a great way to get clarity.
The more you write, the moreyou understand and the more clarity
and unstuckness happens for you.
But if you're anything likeme, this advice felt extremely frustrating
when every time I went towrite, it wasn't about judgment,

(01:06):
it wasn't about shaming myselfabout how I write or editing myself,
it was all about the fact thatit just felt like so much in general
running through my head and Icould not keep up with it.
And not only could I not keepup with it, I didn't know how to
actually articulate everythingthat I was feeling because my physical

(01:27):
body was in a lot of pain andit felt like more pain and more work.
It felt extremely overwhelming.
So if you felt like thisadvice has been hard for you, I want
you to know that you're not alone.
And it could just be that thesystem that you've been told is the
best way in order to getclarity and to heal your burnout

(01:49):
wasn't designed for your brainand your body and your energy and
this season of your life.
Welcome to Business withChronic Illness, the globally ranked
podcast for women living withchronic illness who want to start
and grow a business online.
I'm your host, Nikita Williamsand I went from living a normal life

(02:11):
to all of a sudden being inconstant pain with no answers to
being diagnosed with multiplechronic illnesses and trying to make
a livable income, I faced thechallenge of adapting traditional
business advice to fit myunique circumstances with chronic
illness.
Feeling frustrated and moreburned out than I already was while
managing my chronic illness tobecoming an award winning coach with

(02:33):
a flexible, sustainable onlinecoaching business, I found the surprisingly
simple steps to starting andgrowing a profitable business without
Compromising my health or my peace.
Since then, I've helped dozensof women just like you learn how
to do the same.
If you're ready to create athriving business that aligns with
your lifestyle and well being, you're in the right place.

(02:55):
Together, we're shifting thenarrative of what's possible for
women with chronic illness andhow we make a living.
This is business with chronic illness.
Okay, so I don't want thisepisode episode to be about you like

(03:18):
shaming people who journal.
I love to journal.
I'm an OG journaler.
I have stacks upon stacks ofjournals around the house and in
boxes.
And I've been doing it sincethe since I was a kid.
And yet emails and writinghaven't been my greatest thing.
But I'm fortunate that I gavemyself the permission to invest in

(03:39):
the skill of writing for business.
But in the days of starting mybusiness as a coach and living with
chronic illness, and at thetime I really didn't know it was
chronic illness, I was justfiguring that out.
Especially doing flare upsduring appointments during heavy
times, outside of just myhealth but just life happening, I

(03:59):
found it extremely difficultto write my hands between the carpal
tunnel or my fibromyalgiabeing flared up.
Writing just felt hard andimpossible and actually felt really
slow for me.
And what I learned was Iprocess so much faster in my brain
than I can actually write now.

(04:20):
I've learned a lot about thisover time, working with different
clients and seeing otherclients have the same challenges
I did and as I do.
And also the reason why Ibelieve coaching in general works
so well and why CBT therapyworks so well is that I discovered
that our verbal processing isconnected to how fatigued that we
are in our own head and in ourown cognitive load, our own stress

(04:45):
load.
And it has a lot to do withthe challenges we might have with
brain fog, which is caused bypain and overload of things going
on in our bodies and our mind.
I have found so much clarityover the years.
Having a podcast now you mightbe thinking, nikita, I'm not going
to air my business that Iwould write in a journal to my podcast.

(05:06):
But just bear with me.
This is just to share with youthe power of how my podcast let me
understand the way my brainworked and how I could better find
ways to get unstuck.
My podcast has really been avehicle for me to get clear on things
around my values and a lot ofthoughts that I have.
Being able to see patterns, especially after learning how to

(05:27):
edit my content and listeningback and hearing oh, I didn't realize
I said that or I felt that wayor I would say that differently.
Really being able to hearmyself out loud was what helped me
to find clarity.
And even when I startedleaving myself voice notes personally
for my personal notes, allthat changed how I felt about doing

(05:48):
everything.
Matter of fact, that is how Iwrite my emails these days.
I usually voice it out in avoice memo and grab the transcript.
It makes it so much easier forme to edit and actually create the
content that I need in orderto connect and serve my clients and
convert with ease.
Writing for my business hasbecome much easier because of the
verbal processing skills thatI've developed over the last several

(06:10):
years in my personal life.
Now I have to give promptswhere prompts are due.
I have been in a personaldevelopment learning on public speaking
all of my life pretty muchsince I was like five.
And so I think for me this isa skill that was enhanced or a gift
or talent that was enhancedbecause of the beautiful privilege

(06:33):
that I grew up with.
Because of my faith, Ivolunteered and was able to learn
from a school that taught mehow to speak and connect with people.
But beyond that, there isscience and psychology that lets
us know that the way that weprocess things matters.
Verbal versus WrittenProcessors if you're a verbal processor,

(06:54):
this makes sense.
Doing what I'm saying makessense because you naturally want
to make things make sense byspeaking, not writing first.
And when we're burnt out orburnout affects our executive function,
which is that part of ourbrain that says, hey, you can do
this thing.
It's important to keep this inmind when you add burnout and chronic

(07:17):
illness, which adds toburnout, it can drain our executive
function.
Writing can often feel likemore effort.
Research shows burnout affectsthe prefrontal cortex, making planning
focus and languageorganization harder.
Writing taxes those samecognitive functions.
Speaking bypasses some of thatstrain and it feels more natural

(07:41):
for a lot of verbal processors.
Verbal processing builds clarity.
Studies have shown that thirdperson self talk improves emotional
regulation.
Speaking activates more of the brain.
Speech production pluslistening equals emotional regulation.
This is coming from a 2012journal of positive Psychology study

(08:03):
found that talking aboutexperiences based on boosted mood
more than writing about them.
Now, you guys know I've beenresearching and reading a lot about
positive psychology for yearsnow, and I truly do think it's something
that we all could benefit from.
It's not toxic positivity, andthat's a whole another episode, but
it's definitely helpful.

(08:23):
So if you've been feeling likeyou're inconsistent or like you're
avoiding what your coach saysto do.
You're actually trying toforce a system of what the mainstream
system says is the right thingto do that doesn't fit into your
capacity or your abilitycurrently instead of working with
what you can.
So notice I said currently.

(08:44):
It's really important torealize this.
I go through different seasonswhere I prefer to speak and I prefer
to write, and it really ishonestly based on my ability cognitively
living with multiple chronicillnesses and trying to heal them.
So this isn't a hard fastrule, but this is something that
might be helpful for those ofyou who are struggling.

(09:04):
So for those of you who arestruggling and our verbal processors
are burnt out and feeling likethe writing aspect of doing things
for your life or your businessis hard.
This is my Voice first content strategy.
It's also a really great wayto help you in general when you're
dealing with marketing andfeeling stuck.
So if you're stuck in your ownthoughts, verbal processing and having

(09:24):
a full voice first approachwill help you not feel so stuck.
Here's how the Voice firstcontent strategy work and I'll walk
through why these things work.
So I'm just going to give youa list of what they are first.
Leave yourself voice memos.
Complete your full thoughtsout loud.
Record yourself doing this.
Talk your captions and emailsout loud first before you even try

(09:48):
to write them down.
Transcribe or summarize whatyou said and then you can make it
easier by repurposing smarterwith one voice note that you can
edit that can become severalpieces of content.
The reason why this is helpfulis because I don't know about you,
but there's a lot ofincomplete like random words or sentences
in my notepad and when I goopen up the notepad, sometimes it

(10:10):
drops a memory.
But if you're living withbrain fog and you're healing through
burnout, you might be morefrustrated and irritated that you
can't remember the fullcomplete thought because you did
it like while you were workingor while you woke up in the middle
of the night, you're in theshower or something like that.
You're like, I gotta put this down.
It was like this quick thingto do.
However, you can do thatquickly with a voice note so much
faster and quicker.

(10:31):
And if you leave yourself avoice memo with the complete thought
in context, you can go back tolisten to it and you feel more at
ease.
This has become my podcastworkflow for a sustainable system
that works within my capacity, not against lol.
When you're living withchronic illness, your cognitive load
is really high, your stressload is really high, and being able

(10:53):
to work within a system thatalready feels uncomfortable because
entrepreneurship is hard.
It makes what you need to do alot easier.
So why does this approach, like, in my opinion, boost and make
sales easier?
Speaking connects faster than writing.
I mean, this is the reason whyvideo and podcasting are blowing

(11:13):
up.
I think a lot of people, andsome people, a lot of people, including
myself, I love to read.
But if I had the chance toread or listen to a book, I will
listen to a book.
But there's a reason why videoand podcasting have become so much
a part of the context ofcontent creation and marketing is
because it gives more contextto feeling and seeing and being.

(11:37):
You can see and hear nuancesthat you can't always hear in written
marketing sales content and itbuilds trust faster.
According to Edison Research, podcast listeners are 54% more likely
to buy after hearing your voice.
Podcasts have a 65% averagecompletion rate compared to 15 to

(11:57):
20% email open rates.
It's really interesting thatpeople will listen to a longer piece
of content than read a whole email.
When you get in the habit ofcreating systems around your voice
and verbalizing your thoughts,it helps you get unstuck and it also
helps you create a system nowthat leads into your marketing sales,
which allows your audience toconsume more.

(12:19):
Your voice is your mostpowerful tool, especially when you're
burnt out and low and have lowcapacity and managing chronic illness.
Now, before I kind of get intohow you can start today, obviously
this message is for those ofus who can speak if we have the ability
to use our voice and we havethat leaning where it feels easier

(12:40):
than do it that way.
But ultimately this wholeepisode is about finding a way to
find the rhythm and find thesystems that work for you in your
season.
Right now where you are onthis journey as an entrepreneur,
experiencing the hard thing ofbeing an entrepreneur.
So how to start today?
Open your voice memo and startwith prompts like right now.

(13:03):
I feel the thought that keepscircling is if I didn't need to get
it perfect, I'd say talk itout for two to five minutes.
Listen back.
Notice where clarity appearsfor your business content.
Talk your captions or talkyour email out loud first.
Then use transcripts orsummaries to turn your voice into

(13:25):
words.
From there you can edit andadjust and really see what needs
to be changed or taken out completely.
Make it complete.
Don't just leave yourself half thoughts.
Complete the entire thought inyour voice memos so when you come
back to it, you have fullcontacts and it doesn't feel overwhelming.
Of course we do all thisinside of my program, Chronically

(13:48):
you and Profitable.
I help build a system thatworks around what you are capable
of doing right now, notagainst it.
I've heard many people talkabout this from the context of this
being a challenge to createcontent when you're forced to write.
Everybody has all theseworkbooks and everything and I always
say workbooks are fine, courses are fine.

(14:08):
To answer these questions, useyour voice, talk it out, record yourself
doing so, and then look at thetranscript and be like, do I agree
with this?
Do I want to tweak this?
This will make your lifebetter, but not just from the aspect
of figuring things out.
Your marketing should bearound you being able to connect
with people faster and convertwith more ease.

(14:32):
And to me, that has alwaysbeen podcasting, especially if you're
growing through burnout andliving with chronic illness.
We focus on your voice, yourreal stories, your natural processing
style to create content andoffers that connect and convert without
burning you out.
If you've been pushing throughcontent strategies that don't fit,

(14:53):
now is the time to reframe howyou work without shame and without
guilt and without feeling likeyou're just not enough and you're
just not doing it right.
You don't need to write moreto sell.
You need a system that worksfor you.
