Jordan (00:00):
All right, Kevin.

Kevin (00:01):
Hey,

Jordan (00:02):
hey, we're back for another quick cast, this time
Alban's out.
You were out last time, I think.

Kevin (00:07):
Y eah, it's like spring and late summer seem to be all
the time when differentBuzzsprout employees are in and
out of the office.
Lots of vacation time aroundthose two times of the year.

Jordan (00:20):
Hey was seeing a lot of out banners across profile
images in our company chat so Iwas like, wow, I don't know if
anyone's in the office today.

Kevin (00:29):
Are your kids out of school this week?

Jordan (00:30):
Yeah, they're out of school this week.

Kevin (00:32):
Are you guys doing anything?

Jordan (00:33):
We have done a few things, but today is actually my
daughter's 13th birthday.
Oh fun, oh my.
Yeah, so I'm officially aparent of a teenager and yeah,
so it's been a busy week becauseit's spring break and also my
daughter's like big birthday, and so what about you?
Have you had anything going onfor your spring break?

Kevin (00:53):
I did.
Last week was my kid's springbreak and luckily they all had
the same spring break, whichhasn't happened since my
daughter went to college.
So we took advantage of it andwe headed out West and did a
little skiing, which was a lotof fun.
Weather was great.
A lot of fun.
You went to Montana right, Idid, and I can't believe.

(01:14):
It's the first trip I've takenin since, like the pandemic hit
where all of our flights were ontime.
Oh really, yeah.
No delays, no like maintenanceissues.
No crew didn't show up.
All the stuff that's been goingwrong on every single flight
I've taken For some reason.
I think they're finally gettingthe kinks worked out.
Maybe, hopefully it's been atthe same time we're seeing like
planes flipping over on runwaysand I was going to say catching
fire and all that, so adifferent set of problems, but

(01:35):
luckily I was never affected byany of that stuff.

Jordan (01:37):
Yeah, I was going to say , of all the years for you to
finally not have something gowrong, I'm surprised it was this
one.

Kevin (01:44):
Right.
So spring break is a lot oftravel happens.
It's a great time to listen topodcasts, and I saw on the
outline that you want to talkabout podcast apps.

Jordan (01:52):
Yeah, so this quick cast was really inspired by listener
feedback that we've gotten.
Got a couple of family messagesabout podcast listening, so I
thought you know what?
We'll take our 10 minutes,We'll hop into this and give
some feedback and ideas on howto fix issues that some people
are experiencing.
Okay, I think the first onethat I actually want to get into

(02:12):
Peter McCauley from BritishColumbia.
He wrote in a couple episodesago and we addressed this on
SoundOff, but I don't know if hestuck around for SoundOff.
So he wrote in again and said Iappreciate subject matter, but
there are no chapter markers nora transcript in this podcast
over an hour.
And, yeah, the podcast is long, which is why we use chapter
markers and transcripts.

(02:33):
So I'm thinking Peter must beusing a podcast listening app or
web player that does not havechapter markers or transcripts
on it.

Kevin (02:42):
Yeah, that sounds right.
The most common one you knowfor Buzzcast listeners is the
Apple podcast app, which doesshow chapter markers.
It's a little bit funky how youget to them.
It's not a real obvious thingthat you could tap on and I
don't even use Apple podcastsenough to tell you offhand how
to get to it, do you?

Jordan (03:01):
Um, yeah, so when you have the episode playing and
you're on like the now playingscreen screen, there's a little
menu on the bottom right handcorner of your listening app.
You can click on that and thenit'll show the chapter markers.
And then there's also a littleon the left hand side of the
bottom menu bar.
There's like a littlequotations thing and you can see

(03:21):
the transcript that Applegenerates, because they don't
take our transcript that we edit.
So if you're on Apple, you cando that.
However, it's a little bittricky because if you use the
Apple web player, they don'thave chapter markers or
transcripts.

Kevin (03:35):
Yeah, well, here's the thing that really confused me
about the message that Petersent in, and it's that he's
aware of chapter markers andaware of transcripts.

Jordan (03:44):
Oh yeah.

Kevin (03:44):
Which makes me think that other podcasts you listen to
you are seeing them.

Jordan (03:48):
I didn't even think about that.

Kevin (03:50):
I really want to hear back from Peter, Like what app
are you using to listen toBuzzcast?

Jordan (03:55):
Yeah.

Kevin (03:56):
And why are we not seeing chapter markers and transcripts
?
Because, again, presumablyyou're seeing them with other
podcasts.
So in Apple Podcasts we seethem In Pocket Casts, we see
them In Overcast, we see themSpotify we're.
This show is not actually onSpotify, but we do have lots of
shows that are hosted onBuzzsprout that use chapter
markers and we see them onSpotify.

(04:18):
So, almost all the apps.
Of course, we fully test andeverything.
So, yeah, I'm curious what appare you using and why are you
not seeing them?

Jordan (04:25):
This actually reminds me .
Pocket Cast also released a newweb player.
They announced it, I think, afew weeks ago or something like
that, and I was really excitedbecause I was like, oh good, so
Apple has a web player, pocketCast has a web player, and it's
another podcasting 2.0supporting application that is
going to be open to a lot morepeople.
However, when I went to theirweb player, they also don't have

(04:48):
chapter markers or transcripts, and so I'm not sure what's
going on with these web playersthat they're not supporting that
.
I don't know if it's that muchextra effort or I don't know.

Kevin (04:57):
Yeah, I mean, everything's some level of
effort.
The transcripts, like gettingit to follow along with the
audio I could see how that couldbe a pretty big hurdle.
That along with the audio Icould see how that could be a
pretty big hurdle.
And taking that on in yournative app first and then
bringing it to your web playerlater, that could make a lot of
sense.
For a lot of teams the chaptermarker stuff seems simple enough
, but again, these companies allwork different ways and so they

(05:20):
have to prioritize stuff.
I imagine chapter markers forsure would be coming to both web
players at some point for Appleand Pocket Cast.
But the transcripts in PocketCast, the app, don't even follow
along with the audio right now.
Now Apple Podcast does, andit's a really beautiful
experience.
I could see them saying wereally want to get this right
before we bring it to market andso it's going to take us a

(05:41):
little bit longer.
But Pocket Cast, it should havebeen a pretty quick thing.
But maybe Pocket Cast is justlike let's put out a web player,
let's see what sort of tractionit gets, how many people are
using it, and then we'll takethe next step of investment if
we see it's a popular thing.

Jordan (05:54):
Yeah, All right.
So the other family messagethat I want to talk about is
from Alan from California, whosaid how come your player stops
when I navigate away and doesnot let me resume.
It starts from the beginningand I have to find where I left
off.

Kevin (06:06):
That one is a puzzler Again.
Unless he's using, he's goingstraight to the Buzzcast website
.

Jordan (06:11):
That's what I'm inferring.

Kevin (06:13):
Yeah, that's what you're thinking.

Jordan (06:14):
I'm thinking so.

Kevin (06:19):
And so if you have that player open in a tab and you
click play and then you open upanother tab and continue to
browse the web, it shouldcontinue to play just fine,
unless another tab starts takingover the audio.
So if you went to YouTube orsomething, that might take over
the audio and pause it, and thenyou could flip back to the tab
and hit play again, in which theBuzzcast episode would take
back over.
If you close that tab, though, and then you open that another
tab later and come back, it'snot going to remember where you
were.
There probably are some waysthat we could accomplish that

(06:42):
technically, but, as far as Iknow, no web players do it Like
it would involve us, you know, dropping cookies on your screen
or on your computer and thentrying to resume from that
location, and it would betechnically challenging.
And, again, it's not a bigthing that web players do.
This is a great area, for if youwant that type of experience.
This is where native appsreally start to shine.
They're just set up.

(07:02):
The technology is a littleeasier to implement stuff like
that, and which brings me tothis other thing, which is like
native apps in general.
Do you remember like okay, iphone comes out around 2007 or
so.
App stores launched roughly twoyears later 2009, ish.
And everybody wants native appsfor everything.
So all the software that theyuse, they're like where's the
native app for my phone?

(07:23):
I don't want to use the webview.
I don't want to use the mobilewebsite, I want to use a web app
.
It's a better experience andI'm feeling like things are
starting to shift now.

Jordan (07:34):
They don't want the app, so you don't want another app
on their phone.

Kevin (07:36):
People don't want to install another app on their
phone.
They have so many apps on theirphone already.

Jordan (07:40):
That's how I feel.

Kevin (07:40):
I just want to use the mobile web.
I just thought that was sointeresting and so unfortunately
, like these companies, appleand Google with their Android
platform have invested so muchin making the native app
experience is so great that it'shard to mimic a lot of that
same exact functionality througha web app.
But we are starting to see Ithink the companies are starting

(08:03):
to see that people more andmore want a really great mobile
like web experience just as, andthey want that to mimic the
functionality you get from anative app without having to
install an app.

Jordan (08:14):
And so they are starting to give us more tools that we
can use to make thoseexperiences better, but they're
not all here yet, so I thinkthat this is why Apple started
doing like the stacking of theapps, and now you can have like
folders, and so instead ofhaving like a million apps on
your screen, you can now havethem all individually organized
and stuff.
But yeah, it's, it is startingto shift to where you have to

(08:35):
have an app to order, likeMcDonald's, and they push it.
Every single time I go throughthe drive-thru, or like every
when I travel, I have an entirefolder full of travel apps that
I have to have just to getthrough a freaking airport.
It's so funny because it isgetting to the point where, like
, I'm resisting using apps.
I mean, even if I watchedYouTube, I will go to Safari and

(08:57):
type in youtubecom to use thatexperience instead of the app
which is installed on my iPhone.
I just I don't know, there'ssomething about it.
I just don't want to get on theapp.
Yeah.

Kevin (09:09):
Well being in the podcast business.
I do have a folder dedicated topodcast apps and I've got 30
podcast apps in there, but I dotake the one which currently for
me right now is Pocket Cast.
That's my daily driver podcastapp and I do break that out of
that podcast folder and it sitson my home screen and so I get
that.
People don't necessarily alwayswanna install another app you

(09:30):
already have.
If you're on Apple, anyway, youalready have the Apple Podcast
app.
That's loaded on the phone bydefault.
I think you can hide it.
I don't even know if you canfully delete it, but you can
hide it if you don't want it.
On Android, I don't think thereis a native one anymore.
They got rid of Google Podcastsso now it's like YouTube Music,
I think is kind of theirdefault podcast app.

Jordan (09:48):
Yeah, I think that's the one that's going to be stock on
, like Google Pixel and stufflike that.

Kevin (09:54):
Yeah, so if anybody's listening and wants a
recommendation for good podcastapps, the Apple Podcast app is
great, so I really like Pocket.
Cast I also like Cast-O-Maticis a great one.
It's a very small, not verypopular podcast app, but I like
it a lot.
Yeah, overcast is a popular onethat a lot of people like.
It wasn't a good fit for me,but I know a lot of people like
it.

Jordan (10:13):
Yeah.

Kevin (10:14):
True Fans is a web app that you can install, and so it
kind of functions like a nativeapp after you install it, and I
think Sam has been talking a lotabout actually making a native
version of it.
Oh, really so that might benative soon.
Those are the top of mind onesthat come to me.
Yeah, do you have any that youlike.

Jordan (10:33):
Much to Kevin's dismay.
I love using Spotify forpodcasts.
I really enjoy it.
I also love using ApplePodcasts.
True fans was top of my list, especially as a web player, if
anyone is wanting to listen onyour web browser.
And then the other one that Ireally highly recommend,
especially if you have an Amazonprime account, is Amazon music,

(10:54):
and this is specificallybecause they have a deal with
networks like Wondery.
They have a deal with networkslike Wondery where, if you have
an Amazon Prime account, you canget the bonus, premium content
and ad-free listening in theAmazon Music app, which a lot of
people don't know, but it'skind of a cool tip.

Kevin (11:13):
Yeah, that's a good bonus feature.
I'm surprised that the AmazonPodcast app is still not a very
popular app.
Yeah, but you would thinkthere's so many people who have
Prime.
Almost everybody has Prime oruses somebody's Prime account.
Oh yeah, you would think thatit would be more popular.

Jordan (11:29):
Yeah, my husband.
He's recently been on a hugesmart list kick and he told me
he's like I binged through alltheir stuff.
So I think I'm going to have togo and subscribe and I'll get
all the bonus ones.
And so I think I'm going tohave to, you know, go and
subscribe and I'll get all thebonus ones.
And I'm like, no, no, no, wepay for.
Amazon Prime, get on AmazonMusic and, sure enough, we have
all the bonus episodes, so it'spretty cool.

Kevin (11:49):
Okay, so you mentioned Spotify, and I think you're
right.
Spotify is doing a really goodjob of making a better podcast
listening experience within theSpotify app.
I don't look at it all thatoften, honestly, but here's what
you should know about Spotifyis not every show is listed on
Spotify.
Not every show is listed onApple, and, of course, there'll
be exclusions, but specificallythis show that you're listening

(12:12):
to right now is not on Spotify,no.
So if you want Spotify to beyour daily driver, you're still
going to need something else, because, of course, you don't
want to give up Buzzcast.

Jordan (12:21):
But no, absolutely not Like Spotify Buzzcast.
It's easy, easy choice.

Kevin (12:26):
All right.
So there's our our quick castroundup on podcast apps.
Hopefully y'all find thathelpful and if you have any more
questions about podcast apps, shoot them over and we will talk
about them in the next episode.

Jordan (12:37):
Sounds good.
Also, we're seeing some moremessages roll in for our last
sound off question, where weasked you to tell us something
about yourself that stats willnot tell us, and we're really
enjoying seeing those.
But we want to get some more,so be sure to get those in over
this weekend and we'll talkabout it on the next episode.
So until next time, keeppodcasting.
