(01:10):
I don't like to say anyone is a special guest,
because I believe everyone is special in their own right.
So we have another powerful guest coming on today. This
brother I met once I became on the legal side
of cannabis, and he's the founder, one of the founding
fathers of the legal side of cannabis. I'll let you
give history, but what I know about him is black

(01:31):
man out of la relocated to Oakland and open the
first black owned cannabis business that I know of anywhere
in the world, Purple Heart. We have Purple Heart's owner,
Keith Stevenson with us on Cannabis Talk one on one
to day.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
How you doing, Keith, I'm absolutely phenomenal. And what's equals
important as how.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Are you doing?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Man, I'm good, I'm good. I'm here with you, so
you already know it's you know. I love talking to
my people and I don't use the word like or
just in vague or however you want to use the term.
But I consider this man my brother in real life
and in cannabis. He's paved away for a lot of us.
So for me able to be sitting down talking to
him about what he's done and who he is is amazing.

(02:12):
And this brother don't really interview a lot. I've been
trying to get him out of his interview shelles. So
I'm super dope to have you here. Man. We keep
its simple. TA as much time as you need, But
tell us who Keith Stevenson is.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Oh, Keith Stevenson is a happy, grateful, phenomenal human being
who's happy to just be in the cannabis space and
the fellowship and network with so many people over the decades,
and happy to see.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
The industry.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Matriculate into the commercial paradigm and where we are right now.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
I like that. I like that he's being modest. You guys,
listen again, this is the longest or fourth longest running
cannabis business, I believe, anywhere, if my stats are correct,
and again, the first of this variety to own anywhere
in the world anywhere. Okay, salute to you. And what
you've done. One of the thought leaders of the Social

(03:25):
Equity Program, who I got my dispensary through, is thought
of by this person, through this man we're talking to.
So he's being humble, he's being modest. But Keith is
the man, you know what I mean, and like to
be able to have him talk about anything, of any experiences,
of just of any value is key. And God's definitely
should listen to what I knew about your history coming up.

(03:48):
Just like with me, you worked, but you also sold
treat Yeah, I see what I'm saying. You knew how
to navigate in both spaces, and I remember you also.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Telling you.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Ikne you how to do it dribble. So when you realized,
like I realized early on, it was easier for us
to do, you know, work and do what we do,
where did that you know? When did you like realize, Hey,
this is all I want to do. I want to
sell weed, I'm a part of it, whatever whatever, and
was able to work and do what you do. When
did you realize you could make those two go together?

(04:18):
How did that look for you?

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Well?

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Prior to moving to the Bay Area when I lived
in prior to moving to Oakland. When I lived in
LA I had always been intimately involved with cannabis from
early teen years and I was always the tree man,
and naturally, when I moved to Oakland, I still had

(04:41):
an affinity for trees. I met some cats from East
Oakland and they were cultivating, you know, they were trying
to figure it out, and I was like, oh, yeah,
I like this. And from there I started doing my
own thing, and I worked at the Patient I D Center, Yeah,

(05:07):
which was formerly at the time it was called the
Oakland Cannabis Buyers Club. And this was in the.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
Mid to early nineties when the DA and.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
The Justice Department was really trying to shut this industry down. However,
I had a job as an airframe maintenance technician or
aviation maintenance technician for one of the top three airlines.
And here I am a moon lighting inside of.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
This dispensary with all the risk.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
And you know, I just I said, man, this is
this is where I really want to be. So I
put in time there, and you know, it took me
ten years because I started there in ninety six and
Purple Heart was founded in two thousand and six. However,
in between the times of founding the retail store I

(06:08):
was cultivating and we're in a warehouse in East Oacar.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
That's dope. That's dope. Like a lot of people don't
realize you grew, you had the experience on the business
side then you open. I was just talking about my
live earlier. Just the process of being willing to work
and a lot of people not being willing to work
at their craft. Which you just told me is that
you were willing to work at your craft. You knew
what you wanted to do, you put into work to

(06:34):
do it, and then became the first to do what
you're doing. Like, like, can you talk to us about
how that feels and what that feels like being the
first to do something in a space and if that
was a weight at all on you, just you know,
speak on that if you could.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, well, at the time, you know, I was able
to volunteer to do legislative work, you know, get things
on the ballot, work with the guys in Oakland, Jeff Jones,
Richard Lee, Stacey Traylor, Jim McClinton, just that early foundational

(07:15):
Oakland Cannabis group, and.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
This is the prop two fifteen days early on. Is
this what we're talking about Yeah, yeah, just give y'all context.
Just give y'all context. And then most of the people
he's mentioning if y'all know anything about Oakstra Damory thing
about that, these are the people that was a part
of that too. So go ahead, keep it a minute
to cut you off. Just give me the context.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
It's perfect perfectly okay.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
So from there I started doing like you know, some
may consider grunt work, but you know, with me, I
was learning. I was networking, and I volunteered to be
to support a phone bank and we were making cold calls.
And one of the guys in Oakland, CAD named Joe
Devrees I think he's assistant city administrator. He works in

(08:02):
the city administration office, heard me speaking.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
And you know, he was like, hey, you know you're
you know, you speak really really well.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
And he told me there'd be some opportunities and that
the city wanted to have an operator. You know that
we're a little bit more diversity. So when it comes
to when it comes to diversity in cannabis, let's give
Joe Devrees as roses.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yes, yes, yes, yes, Joe put me in position.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
So when I was able to get in a position,
you know I was, I was brinded with cats. But
it was like for me to have the resources to
open Purple Heart, you know, I had to refinance the house,
take some money out of it, take all my savings

(08:51):
and push it. Push all my chips to the center
of the table. And at the time I was a
home I had a home with a big basement, so
I had a big indoor cultivation. So I was able
to start off with seventy five pounds that I grew
because none of the cats that I was working with

(09:12):
wanted to support me, you know, so right, it's kind
of crazy, like you know, some of them, you know,
I'd even wanted to be partners with, but you know,
it did it didn't work out like that. So the
heavy lift was to get Purple Heart fully operational license, just.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Have the have the capital to make it happen. And lastly,
it was a.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
It was I had to have an understanding that you're
the first black person to operate a legally licensed cannabis business,
and if you do what you should do, it'll work out. However,
if you do anything that you shouldn't be doing, it's
gonna it could possibly packed many operators after.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Purple heart.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
So I was very keen to show up, you know, drash,
professional wearsuits, code switching language, you know, speak with.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Intent, and to really bring others into the industry.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Super dope. And again, like I said, I don't think
you get enough credit for that. I just even just
when I met you, even because mister fab was the
first person that told me about.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
To shout out to faby day shoutous Stanley.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
He was the first person told me about there being
a black owner in Oakland. When I got into the game,
I was selling we the ninety six. But I went
to my first expensiary in ninety nine thanks to my grandma,
and once I got in there, I noticed I didn't
see nobody looked like me unless they were security or
the highest that get up is maybe a GM, you
know what I'm saying, But no ownership. All the owners

(10:58):
were I do not when he was the wrong word.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
But they didn't look like us.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
They looked like us. Okay, they didn't look like us.
So to have that happen and then HEIM tell me like,
no me out here, I said, I got a meat
bro I got it, like I didn't even know. You
know what I'm saying, so I got a meat bro
Because you get a lot of people that run in
the meet and will say I'm the first, like no, no, no, no,
no no no, not the first, first social equity retail
liction sort. This is the first black man to own

(11:24):
a legal cannabis business of any kind right here, right
here that we're talking to. So like, in accordance to that,
and to for me not to know that as much
as I've been in birth, you know, in cannabis, I
felt bad. I'm like, no, I gotta get notice. Brother.
We got a young and on behold, I talked to
him let the ship three both times a month sometimes.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
You know what is one of my favorite people to
to fellowship with?

Speaker 2 (11:47):
And you appreciate that trade game as we call it, man,
you already know I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (11:52):

Loranoils dot com. That's l O R A N n
ooils dot com turn the typical into something special. So
we talked about a little bit of your past, what
we have going currently, what's currently going on. You know,

(12:30):
what's currently going on with Keith and Purple Heart Currently.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Keith is just you know, kind of working on other
projects in terms of launching brands. But you know, not
really well to the viewers out there, they might not know,
but Purple Heart sustained a burglary back in twenty twenty
May of twenty twenty, we sustained to burglaries.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
And we've been communicating within shurance company that would be
the best way.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
And man, you know that's a process, y'all. Y'all hear
me talking about it all the time, and y'all already said.
Twenty twenty is when George Floyd was murdered and for
whatever reason, people started louding everything our story called.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
I wouldn't call it looting. I would say it was burglaries.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
I'll take that.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
I don't know that these uh individuals who chose to
burglarize my business and other businesses were others were actually
part of the George Floyd protest. I think different things
that gets convoluted.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
I agree and for the sake of.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
The insurance claim my file it was a burglary ridden
by the old com Police department.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
I agree, it definitely was, and these were armed burglars.
These have nothing to do with George Floyd being murdered.
Why do you have a gun? And it was a
lot so going through that into where you are now,
you came into the space. I'm sure with high hopes
our dreams. You had a good run. Still to me,
are still having a great run even though doing what
you're dealing with. But I think another value if you

(14:07):
was going to be these speaking engagements and talking to
people and sharing with you know, the things and the
bumps in the roads you went through because there's a
bag and that just keep it honest. But with you
going through the highs, going through the lows, what would
you say keeps you going daily? Knowing what we know
about the space And you know, na, I know what
your answer gonna be, But I just you know what

(14:27):
I'm saying. What keeps you going? Knowing what all we're
going through on this legal cannabis side.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
I said, I would say, I love this shit, like
you have to love something to do it and go
through a period of not making money Like I didn't.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
I didn't fall into cannabis. It's just something that was always.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Around me and it reached the time in my life
wherever where it became uh commercial. And I would say
that even when I was in and in high school,
in my graduation, I was I was the guy. I
had twenty sacks at my graduation and cap and gown.

(15:14):
I was still engaging in sales. Yes, I used to
drive me and my brother would drive up to northern
California because we have family here. We've been coming here
since we were knee high to an ad and we
would come up here by a cannabis because this was
like Oaka has always been ground zero and Oakland has

(15:38):
the has the cannabis culture. The cannabis was growing up
in the hills and LA was the market.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
So you know, it was just it was it was.
It was quite quite.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Unique man neque to say the least. So something else
that a lot of people. And I'm glad I had
these platforms. We would talk about about. I say it
all the time. When I was growing up, I always
wanted to see celebrity get on the Grammys, get on
the War Show. First thing they said, always says thank Mom,

(16:11):
thank God. I always wanted to hear somebody say thank yeahweh.
People that are listening to be like, what do you
mean what you're talking about? Yahweh. So in my coming
up and teaching, I've come across some celebrities, you being one,
DC Young Fly being another one. I'm Toby Nickway being
another one that used the name that we're pupposed to use,
father yahweh. And to be able to be talk talk

(16:35):
about it. We hear everybody say Jesus, Lord God. You
rarely come across people that use yahweh. So when you
heard me use it, excuse me? When I heard you
use it, I knew even more we had to be
friends because I'm like, wait a minute, man, not only
is his brother good at what he do, he is
super dope brother. He's in the space, he know a

(16:56):
space he's done the same with basically came up in
the same pattern, same and he says, yall way too,
oh no, no no, So for me, I know y'all
always done for me in my life in this space,
just everything of how everything happened. What has he done
for you and your space and your life? Because again
we hear about people talk about Lord God Jesus all

(17:17):
the time, and I noticed is a cannabis show. But again,
this is how stuff links and how stuff works. Cannabis
is a linking plant. It's me and his brother was
linked to cannabis, but was also linked with spirituality. What's
your take on that, big brother.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
The beauty of having foundational spirituality is it allows me
to build on any belief that I wish, and it
allows me to get to the essence of what it is.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
You know.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
I had a friend rest in peace, my guy Renna Israel,
and Rental asked me, and Renna asked me in nineteen ninety, what's.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
The name of God? I said, Jesus. He said, look
up the letter Jay.

Speaker 3 (17:59):
I looked up the letter jay, and it said that
the letter J was at the time not even eight hundred.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Years old, pronounceable of nothing facts.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Yeah, and it came from a German mens print that
was printed in the text. So that's why I precedes J.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
Yeah. I was just from there. It just send me
down a rabbit hole. And when I got to.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Understand things and study things and put Yahweh at the
foundation of everything that I do, it gave me a
really great comfort, and you know, I'm just you know,
my my, my, My prayer.

Speaker 4 (18:41):
Has allowed me to just move through life at peace effortlessly.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Yes, sir.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
And with that being said, it's just, you know, it
was It's just been a foundational name. And I've even
introduced the name to my grandkids.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
Yes, hallelujah, you got hallelujah. I mean, people don't realize
that the Bible, you know, we believe in or whatever,
but it's it tells you a lot of stuff like
flat out, it tells you I'm gonna come in my
name and you received me. Not let another come in's
own name and you will received. It tells you that correct,
you know what I mean. So it just it was
dope to find that common ground as well with us
because it was just like damn, like nah, you gotta

(19:20):
be kidney, and you're like, nah, you gotta be kidney,
and it's just like damn. So yeah, I had to
have to definitely touch on that because it's something that
a lot of people don't talk about, and I felt
like it's something that should be highlighted because on top
of all the stuff we do, the business, the legal,
the illegal, days everything. We have a spiritual grounding, something
that's leading us, whatever you call them, whatever that choose

(19:41):
to be and mean. This brother just so happened to
use yah wah. That's parity.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
And I knew I had to meet you because.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
When you were declared the winner for to permit, the
newspaper writer from the Chronicle quoted you as saying, praise y'ah.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Way, that's first thing I said. I literally when I
won the license. If you like people hear the video,
I say, praise yahweh. I got my store. That's the
first thing I said. Soon as they as soon as
the last ball was pulled and I knew one of
our numbers was part of it, I stood up and said,
praise yahweh, I got my store. Literally, that's literally what
I said.

Speaker 4 (20:17):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
So that's crazy, man. It's getting getting getting chills thinking
about it. So before we get into your five and five,
I'm gonna do, you know, do my little I gotta
pay some bills. Before I go into paying the bills.
What's next for Purple Heart? What's next for Keith and
Purple Heart. That's a double question.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
What's next for Purple Heart is to straighten out, uh
this legal business and uh get Purple Heart reopen.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
You know, so that's we need that we need that's
for that and for Keith.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
You know, Keith has been busy for the previous uh
for the first four years in the state, you know,
and I was consulting with the state. I was one
of the twenty two cannabis advisors appointed. So you know,
this is like my first period of time where I've
just been able to practice wellness and decompress and and

(21:16):
you know, just work on me as a as a
as a person, a spirit an individual, a father, a grandfather.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
Of a partner. So you know, I'm in a very
happy space. I make sure that I meditate and and
then I'm growing Alien Alien.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
Make sure you like, follow and subscribe to Cannabis Talk
one on one.

Speaker 5 (21:45):
Now now back to the number one cannabis show on
the planet. You know what gets Now back to the
number one cannabis show.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
The Bear Flag Group is your white label partners. They're
known to be on time, accurate, and do quality kopex.
They have been launching brands in California since twenty fifteen.
And at the Bear Flag Group, they do what they
say they will do. Go check them out the Bear
flaggroup dot com. Now let's get into this high five

(22:22):
with my guy Keith Stevenson. As y'all know, we're gonna
ask them five questions, which are technically seven, but we're
not gonna say anything. We're gonna ask them five questions
and get his answers on this hot take. First question,
how old were you the first time you smoked? And
where did you get it from?

Speaker 3 (22:40):
First time I smoked? I believe I was thirteen years old.
And where I got the cannabis from. I got it
from my brother. I helped myself to his stash and
I trammed up one of the colas he and made

(23:01):
me a joint. It was It was a MAUI wowie.
I've been smoking phenomenal for a long time, long.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
Time, long time, and it's a precurrent thing with most
of the people I talked to is that twelve to
thirteen range is just whatever triggers. It's like, we gotta
try wee at twelve or thirteen. I don't know what
it's about. It's crazy, it's crazy. It's crazy. I've heard
that answer multiple times. That's dope, all right. Number two,
what is your favorite way to consume cannabis uh.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
By a joint.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Saturday that Saturday morning, Sunday morning. Talk to me freshly rolled,
talk to me possibly with.

Speaker 4 (23:42):
Some coffee and.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Love it, love it, love it, love it. Oh and crazy.
We're gonna have coffee at the store soon. I'm doing
a collaboration with a company called Coffee and Cush that's
ran by the rapper Problem from La. Yeah, he's gonna
have his coffee and Cush Oakland at the shop. So
you'll be able to come through some coffee and cushi
at the stoke.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
I will be there. Shout out to shout out to Problem.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Brother Jason Mark. Yes, sir, all right. Number three. The
craziest place you've ever used or smoked cannabis in European
You know, I don't you know, I.

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Don't know if it's crazy or not, but you know,
it's just when you're, you know, a cannabis consumer, you
pretty much smoked everywhere. I think, uh I would say
up in the Uh Yeah, I can't even say, because
you know, concerts, you smoked, at school, you smoked, h

(24:47):
out the country, you smoked. So with that being said,
I'm I'm kind of stumped, because nothing is nothing is coming.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
What you think about a casino. I smoked to the
casino before. That's a little crazy because weed. That was
you gotta yeah, you gotta tell me about that one.
A matter of fact, it was without We was in
Vegas and we would end up going to the money room.
We was tilling the money room. It was that same day,
as matter of fact. It was with problem that is
hello funny, and no one said any problem. No one

(25:19):
said anything. No. The lady even up covered over after
a while like sir, you can't do that. But we're
looking at her like why they can spoke. They smoke
everything else, it's legal. Why can't smoke weed? So we
put it out and then this little it was what
you know, it was down there. It was hell of
people down there, so we would just light it up
walk around and you couldn't really tell because we're moving around.
But for me, yeah, definitely be a casino. I was
smoking a few. That's a good one, crazy all right.

(25:45):
Number four, what is your go to munchies when you're high?
Some people don't have munch you when they get high,
for some people do. If you do, what's your monkey
when you get high? Tacos tacos fully loaded or just
meating cheese.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
Man, it doesn't matter. If it doesn't matter, it's it's
just tacos, corner flower corn crispy. However, h flower work too.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
You know when you when you have the munch's eat
right on appetite, it's like, let's get to it right
all right.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
If you could smoke cannabis with anyone dead or live,
who would it be? And why? Uh?

Speaker 4 (26:29):
I would? I would smoke with my partner, Dollar Bill,
