(00:02):
I am absolutely pumped. I'm stillout of breath. It's been I don't
know six months since I last recordedan episode, and I'll tell you on
another day what I've been up toin those last six months. But but
(00:26):
this morning, well let me explain. What is it. Thirteenth of January
twenty twenty four, maybe just beforeChristmas. We went ice skating with the
family. And you know, I'vegot four kids under the age of six
for another week at least, Andand yeah, we went ice skating,
(00:53):
absolutely loved it, came off theice really really pumped, got in the
car afterwards, drove I don't knowtwenty five minutes home, got out,
I could ugly stand up my legs. Well, I've muscles that I've never
you know, I've played rugby mostof my I say most of my life.
(01:14):
I've played rugby until I was sortof in my mid twenties, and
you know, I thought I knewwhat muscle ache was. Then I just
I'm forty eight years old. Andwow, it was an eye opener.
But that was good fun, lovedit, loved it, and then dropped
a few hints. I think Idropped a few hints. Kerry went out
(01:36):
and brought me a pair of rollerblades or inline blades, I think they're
called inline skating. And yeah, that was I don't know when, it
was Christmas, twenty days ago.So I sent myself a target of emy.
Our daughter got them as well, and you know, she's first time
(01:57):
she's ever you know, put themon thing. She's very sort of nervous.
And I thought I hadn't joined thegym. I haven't been to the
gym for eighteen months. It'd begood exercise, teaching me a new skill,
you know, a new hobby.Give it a go. What's the
worst that can happen? So Iset myself a target of getting out every
(02:17):
day and just just skating for halfan hour. And the reality is,
you know, that's not happened. It's not happened every day. I have
a very busy life. I havea job, I have a family,
I have responsibilities of things. Igot to sleep, and yeah, it
(02:40):
doesn't happen every day. And afew mornings it's been minus degrees here as
absolutely freezing. But I found acar park. It's a multi story car
park. I think does that translatein the US what a multi story is
like a block where there's lots offlaws and where you can park your cars.
(03:01):
I'm guessing that makes sense. Andthe I've come here a few times,
one because it's the smoothest flooring Ican fly in the first time I
tried the smallest ground, the smoothestground. The first time I tried this,
it was in a car park andthere was a slight slope on it
(03:22):
and I, when I was goingdownhill, I couldn't. I hadn't learned
how to stop, so you know, that was not the best idea.
And also it was uneven ground, there was cracks in it, it was
quite bumpy. It just felt likehard work. So I drove around the
local car parks and found this one. And yeah, time, on what
(03:47):
story am I on today? ThreeB? Level three B seems to be
a good one. I'm enjoying thisone. Four A is also good.
And this is eight o'clock on aSaturday morning. It was eight o'clock on
a Saturday morning. I arrive,I turn up and you know, the
car park's empty and no one's here. But Level three B is two hours
(04:14):
maximum parking. The next floor upfor a you can park all day.
And what's becoming very apparent is that'swhere all your workers park. So I'm
on three A and it's pretty empty. There's hardly any cars on this floor
at all, but every two minutesthere's a car whizzing by and going to
the floor above. And they're allparking up and they're all getting out and
(04:35):
you know, use your story there. Some of them are wide awake and
rare in to go, and someof them are getting out and lighting a
cigarette and smoking that before off theygo. And some of them are just
stood by their cars waiting for theirwork colleagues. And I heard one of
them get out and just say,oh, woke up late. I just
(04:59):
you know, I really can't bebothered to we go into work today.
And I smiled. I smiled becausethere was this person who's their state of
mind, because that's all it is. It's a choice to feel that way.
Has already found the negative. Theydon't want to, you know,
be in the position they're in.They're really not looking forward to their day.
(05:23):
And you know, five yards awaythere's some forty eight year old bloke
who has no idea what he's doing, skating around the car park and loving
life. And that's it. It'sa state of mind and you have to
decide which camp you're in. Like, I'm human. We all have bad
(05:47):
days. I get that, Butare you having more bad days than good
ones? And if that's the case, what are you going to do about
it? It's in your mind.We all get dealt caught hand from time
to time. We all have adversityin our life which we got to struggle
with. I get that. I'mhuman. I've done I've been through it
myself. My wife passed away Idon't know, thirteen years ago or something,
(06:11):
twelve years ago. That was along recovery, that was a long
journey. We all got these things. You're no different. I'm sure.
I'm not trying to brush off yourproblems and your issues, but what I
am saying is what are you goingto do about it? Because can I
skate? No? Can I standup on them? Yeah? That's arguably
(06:36):
if you were watching this morning, you may not agree with that that comment,
But this is I don't need tosign up for a course on how
to roll a blade. I don'tneed to you know, study five thousand
YouTube videos. What I need todo, and what you need to do
(06:59):
is turn up show up, giveit a go. And it's the soft
skills. It's the little things thatmake the difference. Saying you're going to
do I don't know, let's usethis as a hypothetical, but you want
to run a marathon, no pointevery Saturday morning said I'm going to run
for three hours and then do nothingduring the week. You'd be better off
doing thirty minutes every day because it'snot just the distance that you're going,
(07:25):
it's getting into that mindset and understandingthose soft skills required to do the task
you're looking to do. So itbecomes automated, it becomes natural, it
becomes easy. And you know, the first time I put on my helmet
and my elbow and my knee pads, it took me twenty minutes to get
(07:46):
kitted up. Now I can doit in three. And Kerry last night
said said, oh, you know, do you want to go this evening.
I'm back a bit early. Youknow, you've got half an hour
until I've got to go out again. I'm like, no. By the
time I get there and get kittedup and this and that and the other,
it's the wrong attitude. I hadan opportunity for to go and get
(08:09):
kitted up in three minutes, youknow, flat skate for fifteen minutes,
take my you know, my safetygear off and get home again. That's
where I should have been at becauseagain, just going out every day,
just doing a little bit, justgetting used to how those skates feel on
(08:31):
your feet, understanding you know, how good you are at balancing on one
foot and then swapping over and balancingon another. It's all the soft skills
required to be able to progress tothe stage when you can skate in a
straight line smoothly, and you know, ultimately one day fingers crossed, I'll
(08:52):
be able to stop as well.So that's where I am this podcast,
you know, is this it's thestart of me recording more episodes. I
don't know, it might be,might not. Is there a way of
you getting hold of me if youwant to chat about this? I'm sure
(09:13):
you can find me if you wantto find me online. What a corpack
that is? I appreciate that Idon't know. I'm on social media in
various places. Go and find meif you want to. I really don't
care. Sorry, I really don'tcare about you about this particular point,
because I'm pumped. It's nine o'clocknow on a Saturday morning, I've got
(09:33):
the rest of the day free. It's going to be a good day because
I'm choosing it will be. Ifyou want the saying it's all in your
mind, make it happen. Halfa fantastic day. Goodbye,
