(00:02):
Hello, mister and missus Brookings Harbor and all
the fishing boats at sea. I'm cousin Bruce
Ellis. And I'm Kat Liddell. And this is
the Insider Report. So let your ears do
the walk in as we fill you in
on what's going on in the Brookings Harbor
area and beyond.
Well, hello. Hello. Hello. And welcome to this
week's show that keeps you in the know.
Hey, Akat. Hi, Bruce. Well, we got a
(00:24):
new little setup here in the studio. So
that's pretty cool. We got the round tray
bolt. Instead of little pods that they used
to post in, like, cubicle style, now it's
now it's this this open round lovely space.
And Mhmm. Yeah. I can actually see you
not through plexiglass. Yeah. Yeah. That's it. It's
and it's nice. Spacious too. Yeah. There you
go. So
spread out. I mean, yes. I'm I wholly
approve of this this new situation. Yeah. We
(00:46):
just had to figure out where we were
sitting when we got in here, but that's
alright. Who's where now? We got it all
figured out.
Yeah. So how'd your weekend go? You guys
are doing the play. Willikers. Yep. We've been
rehearsing rehearsing for all in the timing. That's
gonna be opening the weekend after this one.
So Yep. Opening on May 9. Just getting
drilling, drilling, drilling those lines and getting them
down. And it's been it's been good. The
(01:07):
weather's been nice. We've been able to have
some practices in the park and stuff and
Hi. Just enjoy that sunshine while we're also
while we're also just making sure we're ready
to go. Yeah. Yeah. It's been a good
time. How about you? How was your weekend?
Hey. We had a good one. Real good
one. Actually, I just because I had everything
done, the paper and everything was all done,
I actually got to relax a little bit
this weekend, and,
that's what we did.
(01:28):
Hung out and yeah. I did it's weird
when I don't have to be on the
computer for some like, I feel like I'm
missing something. You know? Like, I'm wait. Am
I supposed to be out there doing something
and do no. The show's done. Now the
the paper's done. Now this is done. You
know? Like, the bedroom thing's done. You know?
It's like, I can actually sit here for
a minute. But we had a little barbecue
in the park yesterday. Yeah. And it was
very cool. The weather was nice except for
(01:49):
I I was telling,
Dave here that we, we got it got
blown away. It was gonna be down in
the lower area, but the wind was so
much that all of a sudden, I see
everybody come walking back to the house where
it's usually at. And, I'm
looking out, and I go, we shifting? And
they go, yeah. The wind just blew the
tablecloths clear across the area. So it was
really windy, and the ocean was pretty radical
(02:09):
too. So Alright. Yeah. Very good. So we'll
hear more about that. We'll leave here in
a minute. Ringbases.
Yeah. That's right. But, yeah, we did we
had a good weekend too. It was just
a mellow one. So very cool. So good.
And we got a lot of material, and
we gotta guess. So let's just get this
going. Hope everybody out there had some fun
this last weekend too because we got a
lot to do.
We'd like to thank, before we get going,
(02:30):
Oregon South Coast Fisherman, otherwise known as the
Castaways, and the Oregon Coast VIP Marketing for
sponsoring the insider report. And if you'd like
to sponsor our show or one of the
other fine shows here at KCIW, just go
to KCIW.0rg,
and you will be on your way. And
speaking of those crazy castaways,
our favorite ones on board here with us,
Dave Keane with the fishing report. Report. Report.
(02:50):
Report.
Yeah. There you go. Well, hi, Bruce, and
hi, Kat. Hi. Good to be here at
the round table. Yeah. This is really Yeah.
It's around. Pretty cool.
Reminded me of a dentist office when I
first walked in, and that's not my favorite
place. It's not. Oh. But it's nice to
be here with you, though.
Okay.
Well, we have a lots happening. Yeah. That's
what you're telling me. Okay. We'll start with
(03:12):
what's open right now.
Surf perch fishing is really going well now.
If you can get down to Crissy Field
or even Sport Haven Beach,
easy to do. You get to be on
the on the beach, not on the ocean,
cast out Right. Not too far,
with some shrimp or some Berkeley Gulp worms
and catch your, surfers. Oh, not too far.
(03:32):
No. No. Right in the surf. Wow. Okay.
Why I think they call them surfers. Because
they're surf, man. That makes sense. So something
about that. Tell me, take bottom fishing when
you can get out, and you talk about
wind. I went out on Saturday, and we
tried to get up north near House Rock.
We could not get there. The wind and
the waves was Really?
Too big. So we turned around and went
south, but we still got our bottom fish
(03:53):
and lingcod. So Alright. I still keep four
bottom fish and two lingcod.
But what's happening? Oh my gosh. Are you
are you ready? Are you ready? Are you
ready? Are you ready? Bring it. Bring it.
Alright. Pacific Halibut opens next Thursday, May 1.
Oh.
I love halibut fishing. Just for the halibut.
Just for the halibut. So you can keep
keep two per day and six for the
season.
So that's gonna be happening. And right now,
(04:15):
Thursday looks like a good ocean day. So
I think some of us will be going
out for that. Right on. But wait. There's
more. But wait. Uh-huh. You have Chinook. We
have a Chinook season, this year, which is
a king salmon.
That opens
May 16 and runs through June 6. It's
a two week window, but still we have
an opportunity
to go catch a king. But it reopens
(04:35):
again June 30 through July 15. So for
the fourth of July weekend, which we haven't
had a Chinook season in quite a while,
it's gonna be a busy, busy, busy place.
Oh, we're gonna be seeing them going in
and out on the port because we'll be
having the fourth of July going on there
too. Everything. Yeah. And yet there's even more
salmon. So there you go. Yep. Yep. Yep.
That's right. And a slamming salmon. So it's
really gonna be fun. Yeah. But the coho
(04:57):
now, the silvers, that runs from June 7
through August 24.
So that also is gonna
kinda overlap with that Chinook season.
But there's certain times you can keep one
Chinook,
not two
two coho, but they have to be fin
clipped. So there's quite a few rules and
regs that you gotta pay attention to if
you're gonna be salmon fishing. But that's my
(05:18):
job is to educate it. That's right. Hopefully,
not confuse them. No. Mhmm. I just get
to know when they come with the events.
I know that something's running. You know, it's
tuner or something like on the pirate festival.
Oh, yeah. Of course. It's tuner. And it's
like, you know, and I you know, so
it's like it's always whatever our events are,
it's like there's some run going on out.
Yep. Yep. So these are exciting times. Yeah.
Cool. We do have a we have a
meeting coming up. We have to we had
to move it up a week because of
(05:38):
the book fair at the library. Mhmm. So
instead of May 21, we'll have it May
14. So we'll have a club meeting, 05:30PM
at the library.
Some of the things we just finished,
doing, we'd had real fish days at Arizona
Pond up north at Arizona Beach. All third
graders in Curry County had the opportunity to
(05:59):
catch trout,
cast, tie knots, and have a good time.
That's the third grade one they Yeah. Yeah.
That's what Junior went to last year. That
was so much fun. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And
then the man monster fish were planted and
caught, and it's so fun to see the
excitement. Yeah. His good buddy went last time
and caught a 17 inches like Junior did.
Caught it. But with him, it was the
fifth one, the fifth largest because they caught
(06:20):
some big ones. Oh, yeah. No. There were
some monsters. Okay. Yeah. Speaking of third graders,
coming up May 7, we have the eggs
to fry program.
They're gonna do their fish release,
their little fry that have been in their
classrooms for a few weeks now. Mhmm. So
we'll they'll bust them to a Loeb State
Park, and our fishing club guys will help
them release them, the little fry into the
(06:41):
Oh. The river, Checo River. Alright. I remember
doing that. You do. Oh, I see.
It's a tradition. Yeah. It is a tradition.
And so, some of them give them names,
of course. Oh, yeah. Well, you know, we
encourage them to. And try to find them
later. Yeah. I'm right. Yeah. Maybe I I
tell them that when I go into the
classroom and educate him with John Weber, ODFW
guy, and then, hey. In a few years,
(07:02):
you know, four or five years, you might
be catching the guy you Yeah. Just released.
Yeah. Could could happen.
Let's see. Coming up also, May 24, the
Azalea Festival Kids Fish Ponds.
I know it's down the road, but it's
gonna be here before you know it. Oh,
yeah. So we we do that. That's that's
another annual event Mhmm. That we do. And
then last but not least, spring salmon on
the Rogue River. It's going pretty well. I
(07:24):
was actually able to catch one a couple
weeks ago, and they are yummy, yummy fish
to eat. Yeah. Really good. Mhmm. Right on.
So spring fever On the road? Here. On
the road. Sweet. Yes. This is my report.
Mhmm. Oh, that's great. Well, thank you so
much. Always glad to have you on board.
And now, it's time for you to take
Mary Lou dancing. Right? We're going dance. Don't
dance. Thanks, you guys. Hey. You take care.
(07:45):
Have a good one. Appreciate it.
Yeah. You know, that was one thing I
forgot was the library.
My junior, his class went to the library.
I saw you there on on Thursday. Yeah.
That was Oh, yeah. Oh. Thursday. Third grade
ish, fourth grade ish library. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
So much fun. Now he had a blast.
Schools. And now he's gonna get his library
card and all that good stuff. So, yeah,
I'm I'm big of it. Time. It's it's
(08:06):
a fun it's always fun to have the
classrooms in there. Mhmm. And and I've gotta
say, your,
junior's class is a very well behaved class.
Oh, they were Kudos to the kiddos there.
Yeah. They did great. And the teacher, that's
where I gave her love too. You know,
I sent back saying, hey. Thank you so
much for that. Yeah. Yeah. Very good. Absolutely.
That was a great one. It was so
funny because, Brent her name is Brenna. Brenna.
Yeah. Brenna looks at me. She I thought
(08:27):
I recognized your voice because she hears the
radio. Every once in a while. Yeah. And
she looks at me and I and I
told her, yeah. Yeah. Me and Kat. Kat's
my co host over to me. And she
goes, I thought I, yeah, recognize your voice.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. So that was fun last week. That
was really cool. And they got a field
trip this week. We're going to the tide
pool. Busy busy spring for everybody. Yep. Yeah.
Alright. Speaking of busy, we got some music
(08:50):
going on here. Yeah. Let's not waste any
time there. Let's, take a look at Elk

Oh, you know what? I got one more

her late one here, and I told her
I'd get it on the radio. But, she's
gonna be playing on the second at Misty
Mountain Brewing six to eight. And then on
the ninth, she'll be at Coontay
6 to eight. Alright. And that'll wrap up
the music there. Okay. Well, let's take a

(12:19):
adults, and they're standing by to help with
your smartphone,
iPad, or computer. This is a 100% free
service, and it's presented in partnership with Harmony
and Me Music.
And then coming up in monthly and special
events at the library, of course, the first
Saturday, May third at 2PM, they have their
monthly afternoon indie films. They're partnering with the
Wild Rivers Film Festival to host free monthly

quotes from famous people with cousin Bruce. Yeah.
Hey. Here are a few quotes from Martha
Jane Canary,
better known as Calamity Jane. She was born
05/01/1852.
She said sometimes you just have to kick
up your boots and dance in the rain.
She goes, life is too short to waste
time hiding in the shadows. Embrace the light
(15:54):
and let your true self shine.
And she said, I may not be the
prettiest flower in the garden, but I sure
am a wild one. And last but not
least, she goes, I figure if a girl
wants to be a legend,
she should just go ahead and be one.
I hope you enjoyed this week's quotes from
Calamity Jane with cousin Bruce. Till next week.
Have a great one.
Well, I love that one. Seems like a
(16:14):
bit of an individualist. Yeah. She's awesome. Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, hey. Over at the Checo Playhouse at
1240 Checo Avenue, the Checo Pelican Players are

second Wallace and Gromit adventure, The Wrong Trousers,
released in 1993,
Gromit finds himself being pushed out of his
room and home by a devious new lodger,
Feathers McGraw.

cool. Hey. SWAC, the steam pathways is presenting
a night at the planetarium.
Southwestern Oregon Community College invites the Curry County

planetarium is a digital theater space that immerses
(19:50):
viewers in a presentation that takes them on
an adventure.
You can join them at the lobby of
Southwestern's Curry campus located at 96082
Lone Ranch Parkway in Brookings. A variety of
shows will be played approximately
every thirty minutes.
This is a free event, and all ages
are welcome. They got shows and times, like
scene is one of them. It's a weaving,
a tale of journey of humanity
(20:11):
that discovered the science, technology, and medicine that
allows us to understand how sight works,
cures diseases of the eye, and correct vision.
That's twenty six minutes. Then they got Out
There. That's the story of how human curiosity
has driven
us to look outwards to discover and explore
new and distance worlds. That starts at 04:45.
And then at another time, it says 06:30.
(20:34):
And then two small pieces of glass,
visually stunning chronicle of the history of the
telescope from the time of Galileo, its profound
impact upon the science of astronomy, and how
both the shape,
the way we view ourselves in the midst
of an infinite universe. That's twenty two minutes.

So there you go. Awesome. A lot of
fun stuff going on out there too. Local
planetariums. I I've been to a couple of
those during my school age years. They're really
fun. That's cool. Is it like a group
crawl inside this, like, inflatable, like, essentially planetarium,
(21:15):
and they project things on the walls in
there. It's like a little mobile planetarium. Wow.
Okay. Yeah. Okay. Because it's a really cool
planetarium for it. So Yeah. It's a great
thing for kids to see. Yeah. It's really
fun. Neat. Yeah. Yeah. Alright. And then International
Yoga is presenting ecstatic dance at The Grange
over on Shopping Center Avenue. This one's happening
on the May 7 at 7PM
with DJ Nathaniel and DJ Lady Vegas. Donations
(21:37):
are accepted.
Yeah. There you go. And the Southwest Oregon
Community College, they're at it out there. They're
just like the library, just getting and keeping
it going. They got stories from a chimp
conservationist
and colleague of Jane Goodall.
She'll be there May 8 from 1PM to
2PM.
This is a free program sponsored by the
Friends of Curry campus. In 1972,
doctor Nancy Merrick had the unique opportunity to
(21:58):
study chimpanzee behavior with Jane God Goodall at
the Gombe Stream
Research Center in Tan Tanzania, Africa. Nancy was
thrilled for the opportunity to follow chimps around
the forest
documenting their behavior. You can check it out.
This get an insider look,
at the Curry campus. Stay tuned for upcoming
talks in the speaker series. For more information

history for your knowledge pleasure.
(22:41):
Did you know that a toy possum tried
to replace the teddy bear?
It's true. Here's the story. When Theodore Roosevelt
left the office of the president, toy makers
encountered a problem. Their big moneymaker, Teddy's bear,
might not sell once president. Roosevelt was no
longer in office. So they took one look
at the next president and decided to make
a new toy. They called it the Billy
(23:02):
Possum.
He was a toy they created. It was
a stuffed all possum made in honor of
Ohio's very own William Howard Taft. Well, the
toy companies were sure that they had struck
golf. Well, they hope the toy possum would
sell just as well, if not better than
the teddy bear. Well, how did an opossum
come to be associated with president Taft? Well,
the story goes that in January '9, the
(23:25):
president-elect
was honored at a banquet in Atlanta.
At Taft's request, the main course was possum
and taters.
When Taft's belly was stuffed, local boosters presented
the president to be with a small plush
of possum. Well, the toy they told Taft
was just destined to be the next big
thing. It was gonna replace the teddy bear.
They dubbed it Billy Possum.
(23:45):
The gift pleased Taft as did the dinner
while the Georgia Billy Possum Company formed churning
out thousands of the stuffed toys. Well, the
company slogan was goodbye, teddy bear. Hello, Billy
Possum.
Anti teddy bear ads were all over the
place. Companies tried to push the sales of
the stuffed possum.
Unfortunately, sales died quickly, and it was all
(24:06):
a massive flop.
Billy Possum didn't even last a year. The
craze died by Christmas time. The possum failed,
and the teddy bear endured.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this week's bit
of real history of yours truly Bushwacker Bruce.
Till next time, Hey. Always keep it real.
(24:28):
Gee. How could that not have taken off?
The Billy Possum. Oh my god. No. Thank
you. Everybody wants to get one. Yeah. Yeah.
It was freaky looking too if you're looking
a little. Thank you. Yeah. Alright. Well, with
the couple minutes we have left to us,
we've got time for one more announcement. Mhmm.
