Bang voor wat hij zou aantreffen in het land dat hij twaalf jaar geleden ontvluchtte — zo omschrijft journalist Somer Al-Abdallah zijn reis terug naar Syrië. Hij vluchtte destijds voor de burgeroorlog en voor bedreigingen aan zijn adres. Nu is hij teruggekeerd om met eigen ogen te zien wat er van zijn geboorteland is geworden.
Belangrijker dan wat ook: hij heeft zijn vader en moeder opnieuw kunnen ontmoeten.
Somer schreef, voor zover dat in Syrië mogelijk was, verhalen. ‘Schrijven is een deel van mijn identiteit,’ zegt hij. Ook in Nederland werkt hij als journalist. Zijn verslag van de terugkeer toont hoe de hoop bij veel Syriërs is verdwenen. Het nieuwe regime maakt zijn beloften niet waar; de situatie oogt hopelozer dan ooit.
