Welcome back to Direction Not Perfection! Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s been front and center in my personal life lately—and surprisingly, it has everything to do with your health habits.

I’ve never been more aware of the phrase “put in the reps” than I am right now. Why? Because I’m living it… every day… from the passenger seat of my daughter’s car. That’s right. My oldest is learning to drive!

🚗 The Learning Curve is Real

Watching my daughter go from nervous silence behind the wheel to holding a calm conversation while cruising down a straightaway has been wild. At first, we needed every ounce of concentration just to turn a corner or stop smoothly. But with every hour she logs, I watch her confidence grow. Her muscle memory kicks in. Her instincts sharpen.

And guess what? That’s how health habits work, too.

Nobody becomes a meal prep pro overnight. Nobody walks into the gym their first time knowing exactly what to do or feeling completely at ease. It’s only through repetition—putting in the reps—that any of it starts to feel natural.

💭 The Mental Spiral That Keeps Us Stuck

I hear it all the time:

  • “Why does this feel so hard?”
  • “Will I have to plan this much forever?”
  • “How is everyone else making this look effortless?”

And these thoughts quickly spiral into:

  • “If it takes this much effort, I’m out.”
  • “I guess I’m just not a fitness person.”
  • “Maybe I’ll never be someone who eats healthy.”

If any of those thoughts hit home, let me say this clearly: You are not alone. This is so common. But the way out isn’t perfection—it’s practice.

🔁 Practice Looks Like Repetition, Not Reinvention

You don’t have to start with gourmet meals or complicated workouts. In fact, the best place to begin is with what’s easy and repeatable.

Let’s talk about food:

  • Taco Tuesdays.
  • Burger Wednesdays.
  • Friday pizza night.

Repetition gives your brain a break. Once you’re in a groove, you might get creative. Maybe Taco Tuesday turns into a southwestern salad. But first—you need the rhythm.

Your Takeaway Toolbox:

Let’s land this episode with a few simple takeaways:

  • Everything feels hard before it feels easy. Don’t confuse new with wrong.
  • Repetition builds confidence, clarity, and consistency.
  • Start with a routine that feels effortless—then add creativity later.
  • Forget perfection. Aim for progress.
  • Drop the “shoulds.” Choose what actually works for you.
  • Meal prep and movement are skills—not personality traits. They’re learnable.
  • Put in the reps. Show up messy. Show up tired. Just show up.

Thanks for spending this time with me. If today’s episode gave you a little breath of relief or a spark of motivation, I’d love to hear about it. And remember—whether it’s behind the wheel or in the kitchen, practice changes everything.

🎧 Hit that play button, share this with a friend, and let’s keep showing up… together.
