"Let's Mention Prevention"  with Dr. Ken Zweig: https://youtu.be/gtPk9ibD1k8

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Main Topic: What Do We Mean by Thresholds?

Let’s start here: when you hear the word “threshold,” what comes to mind?

Most of us think of pain thresholds first—how much physical discomfort we can handle before we tap out.

Health Thresholds: The Connection to Motivation

Thresholds don’t just apply to pain—they show up across all areas of our health.

Let’s take sleep, for example. I once listened to a concierge physician on an earlier episode titled “Let’s Mention Prevention”—I’ll link it in the show notes—and he shared how people often overestimate their ability to function on poor sleep. Maybe someone says, “I only need five hours, I’m fine.” But then they’re dealing with things like weight gain, high blood pressure, or other symptoms—and never connect those dots.

Some people have a high tolerance for the discomfort caused by sleep deprivation. But just because they can push through doesn’t mean their body’s not struggling.

The Whisper vs. the Shout

One of my podcast guests once said: “Most of us don’t listen to our bodies until they’re shouting. The real skill is learning to respond when they’re whispering.”

Think about that.

What This Means for You

This isn’t about labeling yourself as “good” or “bad” at health.

It’s about awareness.

If you have a high threshold for discomfort, that can be a superpower! You’re resilient. You’re strong. But it also means you might miss the signals your body is sending—until they become a full-blown problem. And if your threshold is low, you might feel symptoms sooner—but that can give you a head start on making adjustments.

Closing Thoughts: A Moment of Discovery

  • Where do you tend to push through discomfort?
  • Where do you notice your body whispering… but you’re not yet responding?
  • And how could your thresholds actually guide you toward more sustainable self-care?

This week, I encourage you to notice those little moments. Ask questions—without judgment. Whether your body whispers or shouts, your awareness is your greatest tool.
