When we think of adopting a pet from an animal shelter, we think of doing good by rescuing a stray animal, but we don't realize how we are actually rescuing ourselves. Today's guests tell stories of mutual rescues. Purple Heart veteran Josh Marino shares how his life was changed forever by the love of a stray kitten. Wounded in Iraq when an explosive detonated, he suffered concussions that led to constant headaches, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Josh reached the point where he decided to end his life. As he sat outside his barracks in the rain, he heard a cry from the bushes and found a tiny cat looking up at him. Moved deeply that this little soul had found him just when he needed someone most, he changed his mind and decided to live to care for this cat he named Scout. Carol Novello is the founder of Mutual Rescue, a national initiative that highlights the life-changing power of human-animal relationships through their film series, including Eric & Peety and Josh and Scout.
