Med forbedrede hygiejniske forhold, rene boliger og ditto toiletter bliver børn og voksne ikke længere udsat for kolerasmitte. Men heller ikke for de bittesmå doser af polio-bakterier, der i århundreder har gjort folk immune. I 1950’ernes Danmark opstår en dødelig polio-epidemi, men en dansk læge får i desperation en idé, der skal vise sig at kunne holde polioramte i live verden over.
