Don Armstrong (00:03):
Welcome to another In Wheel Time Podcast, a
30 minute mini version of theIn Wheel Time car show that airs
live every Saturday morning 8to 11am central.
What did the woman used to say?
Mini Pearl howdy, live oniHeart Radio.

(00:23):
It's the In Wheel Time car talkshow.
We're going to talk with MikeQuincy at Consumer Reports on
SUVs.
You should avoid Juicy.
I got to drive the 2023 FordBroncos Sport and I'll give you
my look at that.
Later on we're going to haveConrad talking about the Cruise

(00:44):
Inn calendar and this week inAuto History, and later we
talked with Ford F-150 marketingmanager about the updated 2024
model that's just been displayedfor all to look at.
Plus, we'll also bring you thestories making automotive news
headlines this week.
It's all just ahead on the InWheel Time car talk show Howdy,
along with Mike out of thisworld, mars King, conrad DeLong.

(01:07):
We always need more Jeff Zekin.
I'm Don Armstrong, and we startthis morning with the United
Auto Workers Strike that started.
Let's see Friday morning, atmidnight.
In a historic gambit, nearly13,000 hourly workers at three

(01:27):
large assembly plants went onstrike against the Detroit 3
early Friday in what UAWPresident Sean Fain is framed as
a righteous fight against therich to get better wages and
benefits for the working class.
Never in the UAW's 88-yearhistory has it attempted a
simultaneous strike against FordMotor Company, general Motors

(01:50):
and Chrysler, now part ofStellantis.
Union plans to expand the workstoppage at yet to be determined
intervals to ratchet uppressure on the automakers.
A novel tactic.
Fain has branded a stand-upstrike to mirror the sit-down
strikes of the UAW's early years.
This story from automotive news.

(02:11):
The walkout will immediatelyhalt production of profitable,
high-demand vehicles, includingthe Ford Bronco, the Jeep
Wrangler and Chevy Colorado, andcould have devastating ripple
effects on suppliers, contractors, dealers and the
broader economy in the comingweeks.
So we're going to keep an eyeon that and give you all of the

(02:31):
latest, as mentioned.
Yeah, hopefully we get to talka little more about it later.
Yeah, we will.
Yeah, we will.
I've got another story Withoutraising our voice and without
being glued you know, just calmit down.

Konrad Delong (02:44):
I have some notes I want to talk about.

Don Armstrong (02:45):
Okay, well, that's just fine, but we're
going to hold that for now.

Konrad Delong (02:48):
Yes, sir, that's why I asked Please.

Don Armstrong (02:50):
Okay, consumer Reports is a very popular
magazine and they always haveall sorts of things besides.
You know their reviews ofwashing machines and all sorts
of sewing machines.

Konrad Delong (03:02):
I like sewing machines, it's educational.

Don Armstrong (03:05):
But I will tell you what I think that they do a
pretty good job on theirautomotive reviews and the
research that they do on themand with the, and they drive all
of them, yeah, and they alsohave places for you and me to
comment on the cars, especiallyif you own one of them.

Mike Quincy (03:25):
So joining, us like a singer.

Don Armstrong (03:27):
So joining us now is Mike Quincy from Consumer
Reports.
Mike, good morning and thanksso much for joining us.

Mike Quincy (03:33):
Good morning.
And please don't ask me aboutsewing machines.
I have no idea.

Don Armstrong (03:38):
Well, I think I've driven one or two of them
in my past, a long time ago, butnot any longer.
But, at any rate, this storythat you guys have come up with
caught my attention, as well asMr Mars over there and the story
really is about the popular andnot so popular or well received

(04:00):
or reviewed level and yourtesting has proven some of these
right on and some of the mostpopular midsize sedans, some of
the most popular SUVs to avoid, and why.
So I'll let you start when doyou want to start.

Mike Quincy (04:21):
Well, basically, looking at this list of this
story at consumerreportsorg,we're looking at vehicles that
did well in our testing, haveaverage or better reliability,
as well as good scores in oursurveys for owner satisfaction.
We also have a criteria for avehicle to be recommended and to
be kind of like on the buy list.
Is standard, automatic mercybreaking at highway speeds,

(04:44):
blind spot warning and rearcross traffic warning.
So you know the standards arehigh but you kind of set it up
real well because there's anumber of vehicles that are you
know, air quotes popular butthat high sales does not
necessarily mean that it's agood car.

Don Armstrong (05:01):
Oh, and don't we know it?
Yes, and we agree with you.
Holy yeah, absolutely.

Mike Quincy (05:06):
I mean you remember way back when the Chevrolet
Cavalier was one of the topselling cars of all time, or at
least for a whole bunch of, andit was a terrible car.
So just because everyone boughtit doesn't necessarily mean
that it's a good buy.

Konrad Delong (05:22):
It was in the class of the Dodge Neon.
It means it has good marketing.

Don Armstrong (05:26):
Yeah, good marketing, or it may be shaped
just the right way, or offer thebest colors and go.

Konrad Delong (05:32):
Oh, I really like that it had the biggest rebate
as a percentage of price.

Mike Quincy (05:38):
Oh, yeah, that's what I was going to say probably
heavily rebated and low cost, and that's you know that's what
drives a lot of consumersdecision.
It's solely based on cost andconsumer reports, where you're
encouraging people to look alittle bit deeper than just the
monthly payment.

Don Armstrong (05:55):
It had a good coefficient, yep, exactly.
So let's talk about thosevehicles that really they made
the list, but not in a good way.
Those two, those vehicles toavoid.

Mike Quincy (06:06):
Right and we're going to start right out with
with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
This is a very popular to growSUV priced around 40 to $70,000.
If you're trying about 20 milesper gallon overall consumer
reports testing, which is a bitbelow the average of this class.
It has a decent 3.6 liter V6engine but in our tests we found

(06:29):
the stopping distance werereally long.
And, just to remind you andyour viewers and listeners,
consumer reports has its owntest track, 327 acres in
Connecticut where we can do allof these instrumented testing
and so we can look at it incomparison with other SUVs.
So really, the brakingdistances were part of the
reason that it's on the avoidlist, but even more so than that

(06:51):
is below average reliabilityand consumer reports surveys.
So there are other choices outthere and we encourage people to
dig a little deeper.

Don Armstrong (07:01):
Yeah, and one of them being over on the Ford side
and this kind of surprised me.
You guys like the Ford Edge.

Mike Quincy (07:09):
We do and actually one of the things that that is
notable about the Edge and anumber of vehicles that have
decent reliability is that thecomponents have really been kind
of fleshed out.
If there's been any bugs goingon with the Edge, whether it's
the engine, transmission or thegeneral vehicle architecture,
ford's probably worked out theproblems by that.
So, with about 22 miles pergallon, overall price between

(07:35):
like 38, $47,000.
The edges are very decent by.
I think that there's not a bigdemand for this vehicle, which
is too bad because it rides well, it has a roomy cabin, above
average reliability and itreally, if you haven't been in
an engine a while because it'sbeen around a while, you should
definitely check it out.

Don Armstrong (07:56):
Well, I will say this that I had somebody
yesterday.
I got my hair cut.
The lady that cuts my hair says, oh, I want that Chevy Blazer.
Now I don't know too manypeople that really say I'll
raise my hand for the new ChevyBlazer.
When you think Blazer, youthink back in the 70s and the
80s.
This is not that this is acrossover SUV and you guys like

(08:19):
it and you put it under theradar, as you say.

Mike Quincy (08:23):
Yeah, it isn't as popular as some of the other
models.
It gets about 19 miles pergallon overall with the V6
engine, which is just so-so.
But listen, chevrolet canreally get it together when they
feel like it.
The Blazer returned aboveaverage reliability and consumer
reports surveys, which is areal credit to how they're

(08:43):
building this Easy controls, pretty easy car to live with.
And, yes, you're right, all ofus talking right now are of the
era of the Chevy Blazer beingthe large truck-based and
two-door model with a fiberglasscap on the back.

Don Armstrong (08:59):
Yeah, it takes off and almost make it a
convertible.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And now those old things arecoming back and more popular
than they were when they werebrand new.
It's crazy.

Mike Quincy (09:10):
Isn't that crazy?
And then become collector carswhere back in the day they were
just the vehicle that you got inevery day and went to work.

Don Armstrong (09:16):
Well, here's a perfect example of that.
That would be the Ford Bronco.
Yeah, Remember when that cameout in the 60s.
Oh my gosh, it was just alittle Tim thing.
That is like are you kidding?

Konrad Delong (09:27):
And now they're worth 10 times what they were
new back then.

Don Armstrong (09:29):
Yeah, friend of mine, high school had one.
His dad bought one orange onewith a white top.
Crazy, crazy, crazy.
Nothing in it.
Yeah, here's one that this onealso surprised me.
One of your three rows to avoidis the Ford Explorer.
Now this one.
I think everybody at leastknows somebody that had one, if
they didn't have one themselves.

Mike Quincy (09:49):
Yeah, I think back in the 90s Ford really hit a
home run with the originalExplorer.
It helped to build the wholeSUV wave that we've been riding
for over 20, 30 years or whatnot.
But the current Explorer did notdo well in consumer reports,
testing about 21 miles pergallon, overall Price between
about $37,000 and $56,000.

(10:12):
We found that the Explorer gotbelow average reliability in
consumer reports surveys andeven more so than that, owners
have reported also below averagefor satisfaction.
So not only are they telling usabout problems that they're
having with their vehicle, they're also saying that we're

(10:33):
not really crazy about it.
And they don't always go handin hand.
For example, the Jeep Wranglerusually gets below average
reliability, but ownersatisfaction is always among the
highest in our surveys.
So it isn't necessarily well,it's breaking, so people don't
like it.
That's not always the case.
So we would definitely sayavoid the Ford Explorer.

Don Armstrong (10:52):
The next one, the best three-row choice or better
, and I find it interestingbecause you guys liked it and so
did I.
I just had it a couple of weeksago the Kia Telluride.
Oh my gosh, I think thatthere's a ton of content in this
vehicle for the price thatthey're asking for it, and I
really liked it.

Mike Quincy (11:13):
You know, once in a while a car manufacturer just
gets everything right.
I don't know what it is or howto describe it.
I'm sure if you could bottle itand sell it to every car
manufacturer you'd be richerthan Jeff Bezos.
But with Kia and the Tellurideyou're absolutely right.
Price between $36,000 and$57,000, $53,000.

(11:37):
It has about averagereliability, which is not
outstanding, but it's still goodenough to be recommended by
Consumer Reports.
But the smooth V6 engine, 21miles per gallon overall, the
comfortable, quiet ride and, asyou mentioned you just hit the
nail on the head the interior ismuch nicer than you think it
was.
You sit in the tell your rideand you think, wow, this must be

(12:00):
like an $80,000 car, Exactly.
Yep, You'd be surprised at justhow much you're getting for
your money.
I love the tell your ride andit has been tops in Consumer
Reports ratings for a number ofyears.

Konrad Delong (12:12):
And it's a lot to me.
It's a larger of the SUV family, it's not one of the small ones
.

Mike Quincy (12:20):
Right, but it isn't hooking to drive.
Whenever I drive to tell yourride, I think it drives smaller
than it is, if you get my drift.

Don Armstrong (12:27):
Absolutely, and I'm right on there with you.
As a matter of fact, I liked itso much I'm using it in a
magazine article that I justwrote for Bay Area Houston
Magazine and I put it in thearticle that also shares the
Lincoln Navigator.
I know it's a stretch, but I'mjust saying as far as the price

(12:48):
that you pay for a Navigator andthen you pay for a Kia
Telluride, I'm kind of leaningtoward the Telluride, you can
say Ford Explorer with what'sleft over.
Well, ford Explorer, that's itAll right.
And the under the radar threerow alternative would be the
Subaru Ascent.
You know I've not had a SubaruAscent.

(13:08):
Have you had one, mike?
No, no, uh-uh, yeah.
So I find it interesting thatyou guys really kind of like
that.

Mike Quincy (13:15):
Well, Subaru, as the expression goes, is like the
vehicle of New England, or atleast the Pacific Northwest or
whatever.
Because all but their sports caris standard all wheel drive.
So that goes a long way whenthe snow starts falling.
But what we like about theAscent is it's 22 miles per
gallon overall about averagereliability and over

(13:36):
satisfaction.
Four cylinder turbo is prettyresponsive.
Handling is OK.
I don't really find it thatengaging to drive but seeing
that it's a three row SUV it'sprobably going to be more like a
family vehicle and maybe that'snot high on your radar.
But it's easy controls and justrock solid Subaru build quality

(13:57):
.
It makes it easy to recommendprice around $34,000 to $48,000.
Like I said, it is among theleast engaging SUVs for me to
drive, but it really has hithome with a number of owners
because they like it and Subaruhas what I call a fanatical fan
base.

Konrad Delong (14:17):
They are the people who drive and own
Subaru's, are very loyal to thebrand.

Don Armstrong (14:23):
Well, one of the things, Mike, that I wanted to
mention is the fact that back inthe day, when Subaru really got
its Mojo together, if you wantto call it that, that everybody
at Subaru touted the fact thatit's a flat four engine that
handles a lot better.
We don't care about handling itin a sense.
I mean I wouldn't.

(14:44):
I mean I get it with the enginecertainly closer to the ground.
Yeah, but it's more becausewho's going to race it?
Nobody that I know of, and so Imean it works well.
I guess that it's a prettyreliable engine, but that used
to be a big thing and now not somuch anymore.
Let's just talk aboutreliability.

(15:05):
I think is more at the top ofthe list.

Konrad Delong (15:09):
Well, one of the things I really like about
Consumer Reports you talkedabout, you have your own test
track, so everything you guystest is tested on the same
facility.
So there's the comparisons areequal.
The vehicles might not be equal, but the road test comparisons
are equal.
So it's not a matter of wereyou testing it that day and it

(15:32):
was bad weather or you were inheavy traffic for whatever
reason.
No, because you guys drive onthat same test track, because
the criteria is all the same.
Yeah.

Mike Quincy (15:42):
Right, right.
We have a lot of lawyersworking for Consumer Reports and
they say everything you do hasto be defensible.
And to make it defensible iswhen you're testing a group of
cars.
You do the acceleration runs onthe same day, you do the
braking tests on the same day,so all of the conditions are the
same for all the cars.

(16:02):
There's criteria for weather.
If it's too cold, we won't test.
If it's too hot, we won't test.
If it's obviously raining, wecan't do dry braking tests.
So we're very dependent on theweather.
But we have to make sure thatthe test is repeatable for every
make and model.

Konrad Delong (16:18):
Well, you have to pay the attorneys Well, and the
other big advantage you have inthat you don't have to worry
about where the police aresetting whenever you go out to
do that breaking test or theacceleration test.
It was on their track.
You don't have to.

Mike Quincy (16:31):
Only only only Mr Mars would come up with that.
Well, you have to work aroundthese things.
Yeah, he's trying.
Yeah, he does the on rampacceleration test.
It's on a closed track, mike.
Well, listen, I I agree with MrMars, because we just got a
Ford Mustang dark horse that werented from Ford and to to to

(16:52):
let that pony breathe heavy.
Yes, you've got.
We take it out on the track andjust come back to our guests
grinning like a fool andthinking this is better shot of
adrenaline than a cup of coffee.

Don Armstrong (17:05):
Absolutely Well, mike.
It's great to talk to you andwe really appreciate the insight
into the popular SUVs to avoidand what to buy through
consumerreportsorg.

Konrad Delong (17:17):
And we posted that on our Facebook and social
media.

Mike Quincy (17:20):
Thanks so much.
I mean we we rely on on onpeople to to support
consumerreports so we could dothe work that we do.
Every member, every subscriber, every person that donates to
the organization allows us tokeep testing and to stay
independent, and we reallyappreciate the opportunity to
talk to you guys and getting theword out.

Don Armstrong (17:39):
Keep on keeping on Mike Quincy.

Mike Quincy (17:42):
Next week is sewing machines.

Don Armstrong (17:43):
Next week is sewing machines.
We'll have you back.
Thanks so much, take care ohfun.

Konrad Delong (17:51):
I need to, I need to be a substitute and like
when they go on vacation orsomething.

Don Armstrong (17:55):
Yes, what you have to get behind me.

Konrad Delong (17:57):
Okay, I gotta go to Connecticut to do it, that's
all right, I can do that way is60 degrees up there.
I just can say it's a beautifulweather.
Back to get in the color change.

Don Armstrong (18:07):
And this is almost going to be a perfect
morning for cruise ins.
Oh yeah, now we don't have theevents calendar.
This is the cruise in calendar.
I have to underscore that.
So you know.
The difference is a cruise inis where you cruise in, stay,
talk to your friends and showyour car, and then you cruise

(18:28):
out two or three hours later.
That's how that works.
Can't breakfast in between?
Sure?

Konrad Delong (18:32):
Something like that.
So this afternoon, starting at11am, cruising for this morning
for cure at the Wild PeachMarket in Bessoria, texas.
It's a $20 entry fee and that'sall going to a good charitable
cause.
Nifty 50's is tonight up off ofBuckthorn Place and it's the

(18:54):
G-body bash, so they've invitedall of us.
What's a G-body Would be the ohgosh, the Buick 678 through 86,
altamobile Cutlass, buick Regal, grand National, grand Prix,
that size of a rear wheel driveGM midsize cars.

(19:16):
So they should have a prettygood collection of those if
you're into those.
If it doesn't rain, the BuddhaCar Show and Shine is at
Cabela's in Buddha, texas, thisafternoon, starting at 6.30pm,
Isn't it?

Don Armstrong (19:30):
Buddha, it's Buddha.
Is it Buddha?
I think it's Buddha, I thinkit's Buddha.
I don't know.

Konrad Delong (19:36):
Well, it's out near the Salt Lake Barbecue Okay
.

Don Armstrong (19:39):
Well, Mr Mars has got this smile on his face.
I was going to call it Buddha.

Konrad Delong (19:43):
Buna Buna, there's Buna.
There's a little town aboveSilphie, buna Buna.
I mean, you know it's.

Don Armstrong (19:49):
Buddha.
It's changed the D to the N inthe year or Niederville.

Konrad Delong (19:53):
There you go Now.
Cypress West Houston vintagecar meetup is at the twisty
treat off of Fry Road.

Don Armstrong (20:03):
Listen, I consider myself a twisty treat.
Yes, you do, and a Fry Road.

Konrad Delong (20:08):
The Blue Bonnet Street Riders cruise in is in
College Station tomorrowstarting at 6pm.
Also tomorrow, starting at 7pm,at Freddy's Steakburger in
Katie is an open cruise in.
And then the let's see Park andPizza at Mod Pizza in Katie

(20:34):
Tech Free pizza.
No, I don't think it's freepizza, but that's it Back to you
.

Don Armstrong (20:40):
All right, thank you very much.
Time now for this hour's carreview.
I had an opportunity to drivethe 2023 Ford Bronco and I'd
like to thank the Ford MotorCompany for allowing me to take
this car from Chicago O'HareAirport up to Janesville,
wisconsin, and back, over athree day period of time, and I

(21:01):
was really impressed.
Well, let's get into the review, shall we?
Available trim levels are thebase, the big bend, the heritage
, the outer banks, the badlandsand the heritage limited.
The review trim level is thesport heritage limited four by

(21:22):
four.
This is a small SUV.
I don't know how to classifysmall.
See, I would consider it amidsize.
But whatever, five passengers, including the driver.
Exterior changes from lastmodel year?
None, it was all new in 2021.
This is the same platform asthe Ford Escape.
Okay, same platform.
It's been around for a numberof years.

(21:44):
They just put a different kindof body on it.
Exterior features paint optionswith trim levels.
Now, the one that I had, theone that I had was a yellow body
with white wheels and whitegrill.
It's like you, don.

Konrad Delong (21:59):
It's a yellow body with gray hair and perfect
pearly white teeth.
Yes, and bloodshot eyes.

Don Armstrong (22:05):
My cousin Steve made fun.
He says are you kidding me?
You've rolled the windows downto let people see you inside of
this car pulling into mydriveway.
Well, I liked it.
So there, square upright body.
Unique lighting like theregular Bronco has on the front
end and actually the new F-150mods are kind of in that same

(22:28):
yeah pattern and it really doeslook good.
Attractive lighting with shortrear overhang.
What I liked very much, likeyou, don, overall fun.
Look, listen, this is a beachbuggy all the way.
What could use improvement?
Optional wide fender flares forbig off-road tires.
Just a thought hey, ford, I'llgive it to you for free.

(22:52):
Okay, that idea.
Interior highlights sharplooking dash with an
infotainment pod and radiocontrols.
Perfect instrument pod withconfigurable displays on it.
Goat mode goes over any terrain, makes off-road choices easy.

(23:12):
Interior well, the interiorsrange from basic to off-road to
high-end, with plenty of storagethroughout.
Cargo trunk room, large for itsclass.
What I liked about it?
The Sync 3 infotainment systemwith the 8-inch touchscreen
worked great.
2-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinderengine that boasts 250

(23:36):
horsepower and 277 pound-feet oftorque through an 8-speed
automatic transmission.
Now, that's not a lot ofhorsepower, but I will tell you,
the 8-speed automatictransmission Keeps it in sweet
spot.
Oh yeah, and it works well.
Yeah, it's not a CVT, it's areal 8-speed.
Toe rating 2200 pounds.
So you could take your littlegarden trailer and take it to

(23:56):
the garden house and bring somedirt back to the house, no
problem.
Miles per gallon 21 city 26,highway for combined at 23.
I got 25.8 miles per gallonover 258.4 miles and it was
perfect.
Power is fit for off-roadingand what could use improvement

(24:19):
is nothing.
I drove, obviously, on theinterstate highway between
Chicago O'Hare and Jamesville,wisconsin, passing a closed
Belvedere assembly plant thatStalant has closed a couple of
years ago, and talk about a sadsight for a car guy to see a
ginormous assembly plant that'sbeen in business out there at

(24:40):
Belvedere for quite some time.
Illinois, it's sad.
No cars in the parking lot.

Konrad Delong (24:45):
Well, he said he also went to Jamesville, which
GM shut down the truck.

Don Armstrong (24:49):
Not only did they shut it down but they bowled it
, leveled it.
Anyway, riding the handling, Idid not take it off-road, I
would have liked to and I thinkit would do well off-road.
Actually, nice cross betweencity and off-road.
In the handling department.
What could use improvement?
Just gonna throw it out there.
But it jacks the price up.

(25:09):
Adjustability in the suspension.

Konrad Delong (25:15):
It has that what I'll call that familiar.
Look to the other Bronco.
Yes, it does.
You could tell that they arequasi sister.

Don Armstrong (25:25):
You've suggested the suspension on other vehicles
that you have, I have, becauseit's out there and they can make
it.
But then that jacks the price uptoo much, it's very expensive,
yeah, to do, and so I don't knowfor that, for that mode to get
into that sort of stuff.
I don't know if that's worththat Pricing Base trim price

(25:46):
Base trim price $44,655.
Prices tested $46,250.
They're the base model price.
You can get into one for$29,215.
And it's a two-row only.
It's a two-row, yeah, two-rowseating.
Competitors the Mazda CX50starts at $27,550.

(26:06):
The Honda CR-V starts at$29,550.
And the Subaru Outback startsat $20,000.
3.95.
So those are the competitors toit.
And that is my review of the 23Ford Bronco Sport.
So I enjoyed it.
Thanks again to Ford Cool forallowing me to drive it up to
Wisconsin.
