Subscribe, of course, the bigstory this week in the
automotive world is about theUAW strike, and it expanded.
Yesterday UAW added 5600workers at GM and Stalatis parts
(01:30):
depots to its escalating strike, threatening dealership service
business, but said it had madereal progress in talks with Ford
.
By escalating the strike againstthe Detroit three to include 38
General Motors and Stalatisparts distribution centers
across 20 states, uaw PresidentSean Fane is elevating the
(01:50):
plight of thousands of theunion's lowest paid full time
auto workers who would benefitmost from the record contracts
he's demanding.
He's also threatening theservice business at Chevrolet,
gmc, jeep and Ram dealershipsaround the US that need
shipments from those 38facilities to repair customers
vehicles.
The largest of them fulfills15,000 orders for GM genuine and
(02:14):
AC Delco parts a day.
Most parts depot employeesstart around $16 an hour and top
out at $24 an hour, versus toppay of $32 at assembly and
powertrain plants.
If put on the same pay scale asmost other workers and given
raises totaling 20%, as theautomakers have proposed, some
(02:37):
workers wages would nearlydouble by 2027 to about $40 per
hour.
If you don't think that that'llaffect the price of your car
when you go to buy a new car, you're smoking crack.
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
So the strike
continues and my guess is is
that it is going to get uglierbefore it gets pretty, you know,
and you talked about just intime, which is called JIT just
in time, and it's a Taiichi Ono.
Oh, no, is the Japanese, because they created the just in
time, it's called Taiichi Ono.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Oh no, oh no, oh no,
oh no, oh no.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Oh no, oh no, oh,
it's just brown, you never have
it.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, browns, yeah.
Well, it's going to be acontinuing thing and it's all
about it's all over automotivenews.
It's all making national news, clearly and as it grows
exponentially, across all ofthese.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
And they're both
taking shots at each other.
You know they've added theseparts warehouses, that to strike
now, and the manufacturers, because four GM and Stellantis
have all announced closures ofcertain assembly plants.
So, as the UAW strikes toimpact the profitability of the
(03:52):
manufacturers, which is theirintent, that's why they do these
selective strikes.
The manufacturers are shuttingdown assembly plants so that
those employees' incomes don'tfund the union and the union
strike fund.
So they're both.
It's a wicked balance.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, and these
independent suppliers?
What are they going to get outof it?
Screwed Exactly.
They're going to support us,support us, but go away later.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Yeah, you know, you
talked about the small parts,
the third tier parts guys, they're all just going to go out
of business.
And what happens at that pointI've seen this in the past at
General Motors is when thosethird tier guys go out of
business, that little plasticpiece or that little metal piece
that they make isn't madeanymore.
(04:39):
So now, what do you do?
Well, when that part of yourcar breaks, you either don't fix
it or you hope you knowsomebody who has the design of
it and can 3D print it, becausethat's about the only way you're
going to be able to get it.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Well, and that's the
reason I had to wait almost 16
months to get an ABS module formy 2015 truck, because the
company that made it went out ofbusiness not related to the
strike, but they went out ofbusiness.
Nobody else wanted to pick itup and start building, probably
because it wasn't profitable.
Probably, but that's Veryprobable.
I mean, that's all it was andit only fit like three year
(05:12):
models.
Then they went to something new, right?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
So in the new car
assembly line.
If you're missing that littleplastic piece, wherever it is,
under the hood, in the dashboard, what does it make an image
with?
Is visible or not, guess what?
The car doesn't get built.
So what do you do?
Build the whole car and some ofthe pieces get put on the car
(05:34):
at the very beginnings.
You can't go back and store allthe cars with all the things,
except for that little plasticpiece which they did with
microchips in the computer.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
They built all these
vehicles and moved them out into
a parking lot which has beenrobbed and pillaged because a
lot of those storage lots havebeen or you get a wheel on a
computer chip Right and they'rewaiting for the WIO to get paid
off and then they'll put themodule in your vehicle and ship
the vehicle.
(06:04):
That's what's been going on.
That might not be able tohappen for that little 15 cent
piece of plastic that's part ofyour sunroof assembly that they
don't make anymore.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
So we've got a
special guest coming up in our
last segment this morning thatis going to talk about the
supply chain and he's going tobe good, well versed in the
supply chain and the problemsthat the strike is going to
cause.
It's a ripple effect that'sgoing to go through the entire
industry.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
And they both in both
sides, understand how that
ripple effect impacts them.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
But in the meantime
and in between time to talk
about.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
We got a woody.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Yeah, we do, we got a
Michael Wooding.
Good morning, Mr Wooding.
How are you sir?
Speaker 5 (06:43):
Hello fellas, how you
doing this Well we're very good
.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Thank you, it's great
to have you with us.
Michael Wooding is with theauto appraisal network.
So if, at any time that youneed to have an appraisal done
on your car and there are veryvarious and sundry reasons for
having an appraisal done on yourcar You're going to talk to
Michael Wooding, who does anofficial appraisal.
(07:06):
Tell me about the appraisal.
There are different levels ofit.
Go over those, will you?
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Well, we charge a
flat fee for the appraisal.
It doesn't depend on what it'sactually for, but there's
several different kinds.
The thing that I enjoy the mostand what drew me into the
business, is we praise customclassic and collector cars for
insurance purposes and for fairmarket value.
If they're looking to sell thecar, they get the appraisal.
(07:36):
They have a third party helpingdetermine the value of that
vehicle.
For insurance, you know wealways go 10, 15% higher than a
fair market value appraisalbecause if you have to replace
that car it's going to cost youmore the next time you do it.
We also do prior to loss, whereyour car gets total and the
(08:01):
insurance company low balls youon the value of that automobile.
And then we do diminished valueas well.
That's where your car gets hit.
Your car gets repaired andreturned to you, and then what
is the difference in value inthat car now versus before it
got hit?
Speaker 2 (08:22):
And let me ask you a
question about that, mike is
when you do diminished value, you're looking at the value lost
that, like a car facts reportwould have on valuing your
vehicle?
And have you gone back to lookat the comparison of what your
diminished value numbers areversus what the insurance offers
(08:44):
, which is nothing, and how carfacts impacts that value Car?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
facts really doesn't
impact it, other than just the
information that the cars andthat's the reason diminished
value is here in Texas Right Infirst place, so that you have
some way to recoup that lostvalue.
And you know you can't.
You don't get that from theinsurance company.
(09:10):
To get diminished value youhave to have a third party
involved and you go after thatthird party for your diminished
value, ok.
Ok, then the insurance companywill step in there and usually
pick up that cost.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
So let's, let's
change gears here and let's talk
about building a car, whetheryou're restoring it, whether
you're hot rotting it, no matterwhat it is how?
How do you determine whetherthe build shop that you have
chosen is trustworthy?
And I guess that the real storyis $2 million of classic cars
(09:49):
and parts found during a searchin connection with a car
repairman accused of ripping offcustomers.
You hear these stories quitefrequently where you've got a
friend of a friend who's turnedyou on to somebody that does
restorations and he sells youthe restoration.
You give him the car, you givehim, you know, $5,000 to get
(10:12):
started on the car.
The car is pushed to the cornerof the shop and eventually,
when you go to check on the car, nothing has been done.
The guy is out of business andit's covered in muddoppers.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
Well, we just had
that situation occur down in
Dickinson, texas.
I don't know if you saw thearticles by Fox News on that,
but there was a gentleman downthere running a so-called
restoration shop and he wouldtake him the car and take a
deposit on the car.
And then the particular carthat I did was a 67 Camaro.
(10:43):
It had been at one shop alreadyfor the engine and transmission
work and rear end and wheelwood, brakes and all those good
pieces.
But it needed some other thingsto finish it up.
So the fellow thought he wouldbring it closer to home to a
shop to get those final thingstaken care of.
So he leaves the car with theguy, gives him a huge down
(11:06):
payment to get the work done anddoesn't hear anything for a
while.
He calls the guy and he saysyou know, we're working on it,
don't worry.
So he puts him off and puts himoff to the point where finally
the customer goes down to wherethe car is supposed to be and
the car is not there.
He had moved the car and donethis to several cars moved them
(11:28):
to a facility, a storagefacility, and took all the work
that had been done.
This fellow had bought a brandnew LSX crate engine to put in
the car.
He took it out of the car andsold it.
He took the transmission out ofthe car and sold it.
There was nothing but a shellof the car left.
That's what I tell everybody.
(11:52):
Visit the shops Often.
If you're going to send yourcar to a shop and I don't care
if you're in California andyou're getting work done here in
Texas fly down and visit theshop.
Never turn your car over tosomebody that you're not seeing
face to face and dealing with ona virtual weekly basis.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I will tell you that
Mark Rancourt, over at Sweet
Rides, worked on my 66 Corvairand it took him a while.
I mean it was a long processand he said, look, I'll do this
for you, but I'm going to haveto work on other cars.
Yeah, slow walk it and he did,but he turned out magnificent.
(12:38):
Mark is well-schooled in carbody shop repairs.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
And he's been in
business for a long time.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
And that's what I'm
saying.
So he's got a long history andhe came highly recommended
through Randy Bortcharding andwho owns a great shop called
Paint House, and so throughthese networks of people that I
have been fortunate enough toactually dance with, if you want
(13:07):
to call it that, I will saythat I've been fortunate that
I've never had that experience.
So I tell people all the timeif you really want to get into
anything to do with cars whetheryou want to go to a car club or
you want to get into carrestoration, you want to find a
(13:29):
custom classic car, whatever itis go to some car shows, go to
someplace like Autorama, talk topeople.
People in the car business loveto talk about and brag about
their cars.
What kind of experience did youhave with, you know X, y, z
repair shop, whatever the casemay be, don't you agree?
Speaker 5 (13:50):
Absolutely,
absolutely, and you know.
But we're fortunate that we'rein this auto world and have
those kinds of connections.
The average Joe that's lookingto get into a classic car for
the first time not going to havethose connects.
So he really needs he, shereally needs to start working on
that before even getting intothe car itself.
(14:14):
Go to the shops, talk to themabout their services, what they
offer, ask them to show you someof their work and talk to them
about a timeline.
Like you said, this one tookyou a little longer than you
anticipated was going to take.
There's certain shops aroundtown I know one in particular
that he won't even let you bringthe car there till he's ready
(14:34):
to start on.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
But, michael, you
know, as a newbie and I go just
say I'm a newbie and I go intothe shop I've always wanted a 69
Camaro.
Never had one.
I don't know much about carsbecause I'm a desk jockey and I
go talk to a shop oh yeah, whatyou want to be done.
I've got a lot of cars here.
You know that's a 18 monthproject which, from what I
understand from restorations, really isn't too far off on some
(14:59):
of them.
So so you tell me that and, using your example, I live in
California but I want to shopdown here in Texas to do it.
So I shipped my car down there, knowing I'm expecting it to take
at least 18 months to do it.
I can't come down here everyweek to check on it, and so do
(15:19):
you.
Because of your appraisalnetwork and things, do you do
things like that?
You know, like, could I hireyou or someone like you?
Look, I need you to go out tothe shop once a month, do a
little check on it, make sureeverything's up to speed.
I can't get there and Iwouldn't know what I was looking
at if I did go.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
I, you know, I've
done appraisals on cars that are
not complete, but the person'salready put, you know, $100,000
into the car, so they want toget insurance for that case
Something does happen to the car.
So I do those types ofappraisals.
But you might have, you know, really touched on a new business
(16:00):
that could be evolved rightthere to provide that kind of
service, because there's reallynobody out there that will do
that for you.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Right, I mean, and
even if I'm local here in
Houston and I'm using theHouston shop, but I'm again, I'm
a desk jockey.
I don't know anything aboutcars except how to put the key
in and start it, but I've alwayswanted that 69 cabaro, you know
, and I wouldn't know if theguy's feeding me a line of bull
or not, Whenever I get there tolook at it.
You know he's oh, this is artMorrison Chassis we put under
(16:31):
here and all he did was paint upthe existing one.
You know, that's kind of whatI'm wondering about, because
there's a lot of people that aregetting to that point now.
Yep.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Let's talk, let's
shift gears here and let's talk
about the fifth annual Woody'sWaterfront Rod and Custom Car
Show.
Rod and Custom.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
Show.
That's a change this year.
I hope you're all aware.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Well, I noticed that
it's a change in the name of the
show and I'm thinking yeah, soI thought that there were a lot
of custom cars out there already.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Well, we can't, yeah,
but if you were at last year's
show and I believe you were Iwas yes.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
I've been to all five
of them, if you remember
correctly.
But you know if you don't hangaround.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
If you don't hang
around until the trophy time,
you don't see who wins thesetrophies.
Okay, and we had a lady, asweet lady I mean she was a lot
of fun.
He took me for a ride in it.
I have brand new Tesla with apaper tag on it.
She wanted, she wanted a trophy.
We had a brand new Corvettewith a paper tag on it On a
(17:31):
trophy, and that's not what Iset this show up to be.
Just because you got a pocketfull of money and go buy a new
car, that's you're not thepeople I'm looking for.
I'm looking for the guy that'sbought that car, worked on that
car, brought that car to thelevel that it is today, either
(17:52):
through shops or his own work, and really has a well, like you
say, a love affair with the carand creates.
Some of these cars are pureworks of art, you know.
So I really wanted to get thosepeople a better chance of
taking a trophy home and not letthese root and I don't want to
(18:15):
call them rich people, butpeople with the ability to go
buy a new car and just come geta trophy.
So we limited it this year to1988 and below, and I went 88
because I wanted to get in the.
You know the transams were realhot.
Now the 77, 78, 79 turbos,they're all pretty pretty
(18:37):
collectible cars.
You got the Buick GrandNationals, the GNX, other cars
like that that are going to fitthat category, that you know
they might have bought butthey've had it for years and
kept it in pristine condition.
So I'm really looking.
It's a judge show and weeliminated classes last year and
(19:00):
that's seemed to work reallywell Because you know there's
always some Joe that you knowwhy did I get second, not first,
or this, that or the other?
Speaker 1 (19:09):
The Don Armstrong's
that come out there.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, I got 40
trophies and they're all class
winners.
Okay, gotcha, we're going tohave 40 cars that get trophies
and it'll be a class winnertrophy, and then we have the
best of show, best interior, best paint, best inch.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Where is it?
Where is it?
When is?
Speaker 5 (19:31):
it.
It is next weekend, september30th, at Top Order Grill in San
Leon, texas, 815 Avenue O 815Avenue O.
In San Leon, texas, san Leon, san Leon.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
It's 816 Avenue.
O is the Bay of Galveston.
Yeah, it is an absolutelygorgeous place.
Speaker 5 (19:55):
Y'all been there.
You know people that haven'tbeen, and that was another thing
that I really want to do,accomplished with this show.
Because I've got a garage fullof trophies for my car but I had
to set in some hot parking lotall day you know, bringing what
shade and air I could bring withme to get those and I just got
(20:16):
to the point where it wasn'tenjoyable anymore.
I wanted to go show that Ienjoyed being there and when I
saw this location, when I wasable to put it together, I knew
I had something.
And, like I say, it's continuedto grow.
This is the fifth year we'vedone it.
It's a little bit of work for asingle guy to do.
(20:36):
You know I can.
You got to get me a partnerhere, probably to keep going,
because I'm not getting anyyounger.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
But it's a great.
It's a great location and thething I thought was real cool
about it is if you get thereearly enough, you can catch that
morning sunrise light.
Oh I've got pictures.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
I've got gorgeous
pictures of that.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
It's a great photo
opportunity for you to bring
your car with the water in thebackground and the other cars
parked around it.
In the sunrise it's a beautifullocation.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
How many?
Do you have any slots stillleft open?
Speaker 5 (21:10):
It's a first come,
first serve.
Got it.
We've got room for about 250cars.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Okay, and when did
the gates open for me to bring
my car down there?
The gates- actually open ateight o'clock 8 am and the show
runs from what to what?
Eight to four, eight to four.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
Okay, now we get
people coming in from Conroe and
and Tom Ball and Hempstead andyou know other parts up here,
and they usually leave beforedaylight, oh yeah, and they get
down there.
So they're sitting therewaiting at seven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
And these crazy fools
with this crazy radio show, yep
, yep.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
There's that There'll
be somebody at the gate,
probably at about seven, fifteen, seven thirty.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Well, if not, we're
just gonna have to bust it down,
because we got to get startedearlier than that, as you well
know.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
I will.
I'll be there to accommodateyou guys.
You know that.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Thank you, we
appreciate that.
Well, okay, so next Saturday, topwater Grill in San Leon,
texas, eight to four, and it's agreat venue.
What a wonderful place, thatTopwater Grill right there at
the point out in the middle ofthe water.
Now you can drive right on outthere to show your car and at
the very end, where we'll be isa nice palapa and it's going to.
(22:27):
I don't know if the bar isgonna be open or not, but we'll
we'll let him, bloody marriagewill be available.
That's what we needed to hearWoody it's great to talk to you.
Thanks so much and we will seeyou next Saturday, my friend, Hi
, thanks, woody.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Thanks Alright.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
I'm having me a salad
at the restaurant.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
There's that Alright
time now here on the In-Wheel
Time Car Talk Show for theEvents Calendar, not the Cruise
Inn, the Events Calendar whichkind of goes right into Woody's
Waterfront Car Show.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
And that would be the
start of it is Woody's
Waterfront Car Show is nextweekend Moving on.
It's an event, not a, not acruise.
In Friday October 14th is theAll British Car Show at the
Butler House in Spring, texas.
Friday, october 20th, the 30th,38th annual Wolf Creek Car Show
at Wolf Creek Park in ColdSpring, texas, on September 23rd
(23:21):
, which is tomorrow no, that'stoday.
Today Clear Lake Car Show andthat's in Kema, texas.
And for Mars and his, his ilk,out there in in Nederland, you
got milk.
I have milk Milk.
Put some ointment on it.
The Nederland Avenue Cruise Innstarts at 8am on September 30th
(23:46):
.
Everyone who's arrested by thePopo can come on out, and if
you're not thrown in jail outthere in Nederland, you can go
up to Sillsby for the SillsbyCruise Inn on the 29th through
the 30th, that's Friday andSaturday night at Kirby Memorial
Stadium.
So Mars has got stuff to do.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
Alright, and right
now, speaking of that, mr Mars
has a car review here on theIn-Wheel Time Car Talk Show, and
that would be on the Kia EV6.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Yeah, do, and I got a
lot to say, so I'm gonna talk
kind of fast.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
I'll just say because
you ain't got much time, now
we're talking about the 2023 KiaEV6 GT all-wheel drive.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
Now the GT is one of
the four trim levels that are on
this vehicle.
This kind of a weird year.
They're actually dropping thebase model, which is the light,
and they're adding the GT as thenew one, so it'll end up being
with just three trim levels onthis.
It's what the best I coulddescribe it as a performance
crossover SUV.
It's just like this little hotrod.
Now you're gonna look at thiscar and I got a lot of
(24:44):
compliments on the way this carlooked.
I had the runway red and itreally stood out.
A lot of people liked it.
It has a unique front and rearfaces because it is on the GT
model, got a front diffuser onit, got some nice neon green
accents, including the brakerotors or the yeah, calipers,
(25:07):
calipers, that's what I'mthinking about and I wrote it
down as rotors and I knew thatwasn't right.
So you got that and you'regonna find.
Up front you got LED lightingon the front and the rear, got
some on the interior, got apower lift gate.
That's got includes a rearspoiler that adds to the styling
of this vehicle.
It's just really sharp.
Got a power sunroof rolls onsome 21 inch alloy wheels.
(25:30):
Got flush door handles, thatkind of pop out whenever you hit
the key fob so that you canpull on them to get it open.
Otherwise it's nice and flush, all door colored.
You can hardly see them.
You get into the inside.
It had the suede seatingsurfaces.
The front seats are heated.
The outboard of the rear seatthey're also heated.
Got the front sport buckets.
(25:51):
Now these things have got somereally big bolsters on them.
One day I was running someerrands.
I got in and out of the car.
I counted it ten times.
By the tenth time you reallynoticed the bolstering.
But when you're setting in itit's really comfortable.
You really feel like you'resecure in the seating on it.
I really liked them in thatregard.
Had the H, the heads up display.
We had the wireless charger.
(26:13):
Had a meridian premium audiosystem that works pretty well.
We had the surround viewmonitor that was in the center
stack where it's a 12.3 inchmonitor.
The driver's got a 12.3 inchmonitor for it's got all the
driver information, thespeedometer, the tach, all that
good stuff that you're lookingfor.
Now under the hood there is adual motor all-wheel drive type
(26:37):
setup that is 576 horsepowerequivalent.
Now zero to 60 times, accordingto Kia is 3.4 seconds, which
actually beats out the MustangMach-E in time.
Now Top speed to 161 mile perhour.
I would not argue with the zeroto sixty speed.
I don't know about the top end.
That's in this little thing.
(26:58):
It's got a little button on thesteering column.
It's got a green little button.
This is GT on it and when youpush that button it goes.
It goes really fast.
It's ever bit of it.
So I drove this vehicle 349.7miles.
I had to go charge it on thebus.
No, not quite.
I had to go to the chargertwice.
(27:20):
This thing is capable of takingan 800 volt charging system.
The best I could find and I didas far as I know, of 350 is
about.
It took me 30, 30 to 32 minutesstick for it to get for 80%, to
go from 15% up to 80%.
So it charges really quick.
There's three different drivingmodes on it.
There's eco, comfort, sport andthe GT drive mode and a my my
(27:45):
drive mode, the, where you cancustom set it for with the
settings that you want on andimpacting the suspension and how
the transmission reacts.
There's a lot of differentthings.
It'll do for you the Theme thatI noted and I called Don about
this because the first time Ihad to get ready to charge us.
Well, I'm going to plug it intothe house and let it charge for
a little while.
So I went to look for the Cable.
(28:06):
There is no cable.
I found an adapter that I wastalking to you about, but you
got to have a male to malecharging cable.
So I went and borrowed one froma guy I knew they have one and
I went to plug it in.
Lo and behold that that adapteris actually what they call a
v2l adapter.
Now, that is to Export a chargeout of the car.
(28:26):
If you want to run something, run your power, saw exactly but
it's not to charge it.
So there is no home chargingcable available unless you go to
Amazon or the dealer.
He runs a hundred nineteendollars to two hundred and
thirty dollars on Amazon to beable to charge your car at home
without installing something.
Price wise, you're looking atthe base model price.
You can get an eb6 for fortysix thousand two hundred.
(28:48):
That's the light if you canfind it.
If not, you have to buy thewind model at forty eight Seven
hundred, which is now they'regoing to be the new base model.
The trim price that we had.
The base trim price for the eb6GT that we had was sixty one
thousand four hundred dollars.
They asked tested it was sixtytwo thousand eight hundred and
sixty five dollars.
A couple of things to note.
If that comes with, at leastthis year.
(29:10):
If you use electrify America, they will give you a thousand
kilowatt hours free charging andthere's a sixty three hundred
dollar EV rebate.
You can get on it currently andit still has the ten year
hundred thousand mile warrantythat you can get from Kia.
