En psykolog skickas till en rymdstation vid den avlägsna planeten Solaris där någonting tycks ha hänt med dem som arbetar där. När han kommer fram upptäcker han att den levande planeten har börjat skicka så kallade besökare till forskarna på rymdstationen. Det handlar inte om drömsyner utan om levande varelser - speglingar - hämtade från var och ens inre värld av minnen och fantasier. Huvudpersonens ”besökare” visar sig vara en tidigare flickvän som tagit livet av sig för flera år sedan, men som nu dyker upp i en kopia.
Stanislaw Lem debuterade på 1940-talet och skrev ”Solaris” under sin allra mest produktiva period under åren efter Stalins död. Han upptäckte tidigt att det censuren i det kommunistiska Polen inte var lika hård mot science fiction som den var mot annan litteratur. ”Solaris” har blivit känd för en ännu större publik genom den sovjetiske regissören Andrej Tarkovskijs filmatisering från 1972, en film som Stanislaw Lem själv inte tyckte om.
