Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to an old three sixty other league from every
angle joining me the great good and tallow bro Let's
bring the Journal Australian Paul Crawley and Andrew Webster and
let's get straight to the inns or take a look
at the ins and outs around eleven thanks to sports Bet,
Zach Lomax returns from that foot injury. Good timing for
New South Wales as well. Collins returns after four games
out for the Roosters. Fisher Harris's back for the Warriors.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
How good are they going at the moment?
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Clifford dropped for the Cowboys, which we may talk about
a little bit later on perdue to five eight grant
name on the extended bench. Good timing for the Storm
end of course for Queensland and Ezra Man to make
his season debut with Hunt out with that injury last week.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Gordy Ezra Mam is back for the Broncos. I think
common sense.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
He played great last week, he served his suspension and
I think they need him. I think that a couple
of the outside backs have been locked up a little
bit and hopefully he can lock it up and get
that relationship going with Adam Reynolds.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
So Broncos need to get back on the winning.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
So yeah, well he didn't serve the suspension he should
have served. You know, he should have got a lot,
He should have got a lot longer, and I think
most people when you put common sense into a degree. However,
he is back and he will be a bonus for
the Broncos that they probably shouldn't be getting at the moment.
But yeah, I agree.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
I don't think he should have been playing it all
this year, but you know the whole year, I do.
Speaker 6 (01:20):
I don't think he should have got it.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
I think the NRL really weak about their decision as remmbment.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Isn't stronger than what the court gave him.
Speaker 6 (01:27):
I think that's the cop out. That doesn't make it right.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
That's that's what the NRL says was the reason why
they didn't. But that's why we got a court system,
of course, of course, but it's the NFL's game. Yeah,
you know, it's they get they get to decide what
what the punishment is. So but that look, that's all
by the bid to be honest, like, you know, that's
nothing personal against Ara, that's just what I personally feel.
But He's served his time he could. He made a
(01:52):
great comeback in Queensland Cup last week and he deserves
his place and that type in that side. He's come
back at a perfect time for Michael McGuire because they
need him.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
They he was electric last week in Queensland Cup. So
it's good timing for them. But you're not alone with
the opinion that you do have. I've ezra men, but
he is back. But did Madge underestimate how tough of
a task it would be going up to the Broncos
and turning them around from where they were last.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Year into a successful team this year.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
I'm not too sure about that.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Look, everyone knows that the Broncos coaching position is probably
the toughest in the game because it's the biggest club,
it's got the most members, it's.
Speaker 6 (02:34):
One team town.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Or it wasn't before the Dolphins arrived, and a lot
of coaches have struggled up there aside from Bennett.
Speaker 6 (02:41):
It's hard work.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
I questioned Madge's appointment to start with, given more so
what had unfolded at the Rabbit O's and what had
unfolded at the Tigers. I thought it would eventually end
in tears I wasn't so sure there'd be trouble ten
rounds into the season.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
That's the biggest concern.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
Look, I saw what I spoke to us today about
his you know, the blues that he's having with Michael McGuire.
Speaker 6 (03:04):
And it's good, good theatrics.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
But you know there is lenny of noise out of
Brisbane about players being unhappy there. You know that they
just and to be honest, I think that's only natural
because anyone's surprised that Michael McGuire is a little bit
too intense for Brisbane players early on, Like he's got
a reputation that precedes him.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
When Michael McGuire.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Got the job, I think people forget he remember he
said that the New South Wales job and the Keyweeds
job had mellowed him and that he changed as a coach.
Speaker 6 (03:33):
Well not necessarily, you know.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
And but I suppose that the proof will be in
the putting on whether like I think, you know, we're
ten rounds in, there's seventh.
Speaker 6 (03:41):
On the ladder.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
You know they've got they've gone on a big boat
cruise that didn't seem to have the intended results.
Speaker 6 (03:48):
Last five, that's right, I get.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
That, cause but let's just see, let's just judge him.
Let's just judge him on the end when we get
to the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
The players didn't like Kevy and then he was maybe
a softer, more of an attacking touch, and there's Match
that's coming the other So who do they like them?
If players wins last year apparently because that's why they
did the review, and they're wining this year, well who
do they want?
Speaker 6 (04:09):
I agree, I'm with you made responsibility.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
If you look at the coaches, they are polar opposites
Kevy and Match. And like you said, Gordy, they were
complaining about Kevy last year. Now they're complaining about Match.
They were always going to complain about Match because Madge
was going in there to do a job, training them
hard and probably training hadn't seen for a long period
of time, and the way that he approaches players, and
you can see that in the difference to the two personalities.
(04:34):
They're always going to be a little bit shell shocked, but.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
It's going to be the system.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
It was going to be a shock to the system,
but Madge, we were probably hoped by now they would
have bought in and got used to it and understood
why he's doing what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
But it doesn't seem to be the case any way.
Speaker 6 (04:49):
You look at it, Braith.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
He has to read the room because it's like you
just said, Webbee, he had this problem at South Sydney,
like when he won the comp first up in the
world two two thousand and fourteen. I remember Rich, I say,
he's got a job for life. They sacked him within
three years, you know, And then and then he went
to the Tigers, and the same drama is unfolded. And
the fact that we are ten rounds into the season.
(05:13):
He has to read the room. If it is a problem,
he's got to realize it's a problem and he has
to make some changes because at the end of the day, you.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
Can put it back.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
You can put them back on the players, though, but
it's the coach's responsibility to get the best out of
the players.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
So they signed him to be Michael maguire. You can't
be two different.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
You know.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Who's got a real problem here if this just doesn't
work out, is the management of that club, because that
hasn't changed. They're four coaches in eight seasons, four coaches
in eight seasons. They've gone through. If this doesn't work out.
I don't think we've been too premature.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I really do.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
Like as I said, I know they've lost four or five,
but it's it's early days. We're ten ten games into
his first season in the job. It's to be saying
they're not working with Michael maguire at the Bronco. People
want to lead to that conclusion, but it is too early.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
But history shows that when they go through origin and
there's no pain, has no Paddy Carrigan, So that's when
they do struggle.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
That's where they have back into the the blump. The
players will shift, they'll buy in, they'll turn again.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
To be honest, it's a it's going to be a
test of the strength of management, really, but they're going to.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
It deserves to the end of the year, which I
agree with you with. But do you think he has
the capability to turn them around and the players shifting
their opinion and apparent opinion.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Well, if they don't, then are they going to get
rid of another coach or are they going to start
moving players on?
Speaker 6 (06:40):
Going to start moving players on?
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Because I reckon that's what's probably that's got to be
the next thing from his press conference.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
You need to look in the mirror. Maybe all of
them do, sure, but a.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Good example is, and we spoke about last night with
the boat, right, Madge comes in with his hard nose
and parent baseball bats or whatever.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
And he the inflator. He's tough on the players.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Then he calls a boat trip, which is no alcohol,
no music. He gets a motivational speaker in one of
the best sailors I think was Tom Slingsby, who's part
of the sailing GP and gold medal winner. So he
gets him on a boat, gets him to talk to
his players. It's a nice relaxing afternoon out and then
(07:24):
I hear the players complained about their preparation for the game.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Well, what do you want. He's trying to shift.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
He's trying to shift, he's trying to find ways, he's
trying to mix it up, and he's getting criticized for both.
But also the players aren't responding. So look, they do
need to look in the man.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I don't believe there's any chance in the world, and
there shouldn't be that magics jobs under pressure. What I'm
saying is is there's a massive concern because they've gone
through the preseason and we're at this point of the
season where it's only going to get harder from here,
and already this information is leaking out of the club.
He has a problem that he has to deal with,
(07:59):
and he has to if yes, the players have to change,
but perhaps he does too. It's no use trying to
have a blow up with Buzz and blame Buzz for
the reality of the questions that were asked to me.
Speaker 6 (08:11):
That he gets bonus points for giving it to both.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
I'd just love to hear that conversation, but I means
the pen is. I've heard that they weren't happy because
they didn't have the Captain's run barbecue.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Have you heard anything about it? Like that's the type
of stuff where and we heard it all year.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Last year, Kenvy was going through it and we'd hear
every week, you know, they're complaining about this, they're complaining
about that, and here we are, you know.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I guess, I guess going back to like we heard
all the complaints about Kevy last year. We expected it
to change, and the fact that it hasn't changed is
again I'll just go back. It's the concern for the
club because I'm not certain this was ever going to
be the right appointment long term, but you did expect
it to be a quick fix. And if this season
(08:57):
is not an improvement on what happened last year, well.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Then yeah, can any can any coach be successful in
Brisbane apart from Wayne? Like you said at the start,
I haven't had success with anyone since.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
Wayne has always been in the opinion that the only
person who so everybody the management that you're talking about
Wayne Wood.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
I mean genuinely though, Like can coaches go there and
be successful?
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Ye?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Absolutely the right coach I haven't been, so I think
they underestimate the job sometimes. Like I'll go back to
the fact that there is a lot of when when
Bennett was up there and then when he went to
Souse he said publicly and he said it to me
a thousand times, it's it's different coaching South Sydney than
it is to Brisbane because it is such a big.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
Club and there's so much focus.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
There's so much focus and you have to be able
to handle that.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
What's different about playing in Brisbane? What's the difference. Well,
it was a one team town.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Well that's changed now and there's Redcliffe just down the road,
and there's Benner is up everywhere, and they're all fighting
for the territory now. So when I played, it was
the it was the best side. There was ten of
origin players and they were winning competitions. But why is
that's not this That's not this side. This is side
that struggled. They got wooden spoons about five years ago.
The whole field was struggled. And maybe and I don't think,
(10:11):
and I said last year, I was stuck off for
the players. They weren't walking around like Hollywood. The fans
were turning up and love them. They they're not stuck up.
They do a lot of things right, but there's something
not quite binding there. And I think it comes down
to leadership. I think payn Ass is a wonderful player.
I think Carrigan's a wonderful player. They bought Adam Reynolds
for guidance and leadership, and they need a hard nosed leader,
they like they need a Liam Martin. They need someone
(10:33):
on the edge, someone that's really hard, hard edge.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
I learn a couple of examples from the weekend.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
I just looked at that there and Dean Mariner a
couple of times runs over the sideline and ends had
stating you just don't go neither of course, or is
it now you don't gave me.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
This sidelines but it's ten. Yeah, you just don't go
need them here. It is here. And when he made
the break, this is one.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
And when he made the break, he took Latrell on
the outside and that was playing who I believe in it.
They do this often. They try and come up with
the big play. And what what McGuire's trying to instill
in them is to to earn the respect, to earn
the right to grind out wins, to to build pressure,
and that they just don't seem to do it. And
this is their problem. They want to come up with
(11:17):
the big plane. You talk about egos and they don't
you know all that. There's an element of that, there's
an element of not getting into the get into the trade.
You don't need to win every game with spectacular passes
and kicks from Reynolds.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
And you know they're.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Outside backs, you know, stepping three or four players and
there's there's a thousand ways of skinner cap mate like
and they're just trying to.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Feel the best. They used to beat them up.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
And do you think Brisbane go through the middle of
the back, Do you think that they actually beat them up.
I think pain that's is unbelievable. But it's not that
brute forces ability all that. But they do the ability
the same birds where they just paint As is one
of the greatest front rollers they will to see run
on the field, But there's not that Jaredria Hargreave, sam
Burg just stole about himself. Even Tino to a certain extent,
(12:05):
has a bit more aggression. And you've got Paddy Carrigan,
one of the best carrying to do that. But like,
then why is he in the front row when he's
a lock. I don't think he's big enough. So they
need another hard edge front rower and they need a
tough background.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Make excuses for their roster because there's there's multiple clubs
out there that would kill to have the strength of
the Bronco's roster, like their superstars across the lie.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
That's not the reason they're losing.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
They've got two million dollars half backs, so well, that's
the thing when you talk about leadership like you would
have thought, but you've got two thirty four year old
halves with that amount of experience, there's plenty of leadership.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
You can see the frustration on Renow.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
I can see it on the weekend, like he's sitting
back and he's thinking play one or two.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
What are you doing? Guys?
Speaker 1 (12:45):
You can see that the players aren't getting to the
certain positions on the field for him to then execute.
When they do, they're brilliant and we've seen that glimpses
of it, and at times they look like they're a
top two, three, fourteen, but it's not enough.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
It's not consistent enough.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
And when they're rolling, When they're rolling, they look like
the only team that can be Melbourne at the end.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
Of the year.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Well, they bashed up the Bulldogs a few weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
They play well when everything goes their way against Sous
on the weekend, they're opposite against the side that didn't
have Cameron Murray, didn't have Cody Walker, didn't have Jack
White and Alex Johnson. You can keep going like no
one gave Sous a chance and the fact that the
Broncos gave up was it a fourteen point lead, tells
you something's wrong.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
All right, We'll see what happens over the next few weeks,
but Michael maguire is already under pressure in Brisbane. Four
wins one draw from the last six games. But Clifford
has been dropped for the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Why is that?
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Well when you're first.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
When I first heard it today, I was shocked because
I thought he'd been in pretty good form this year.
The Cowboys turned the corner. It coincided with his comeback.
He works well with Dard and he's got that burning
kick kicking game and it's made a difference. He scores
good tries, he runs hard, he does everything right. But
(14:01):
you've got the young Blake in the centers who's a
potential superstar. He played his juniors in the halves and
there's probably pressure to give him a going On top
of that, they've got young Labor coming back who's a
very very good.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Center, and I think Pursue's going to be the future, right,
So I like then I heard the coaches talking about
that he played all of his played all of his
junior footy in the halves, and maybe they're a look
at the state of origin. Tommy did and probably will
play number four h for Queensland with one And you
think that Clifford might come back next week. You don't
know whether he's carrying a linga And I thought it
was strange dropping a half back when they've like their
(14:38):
last month of foot he has been their best month
of footage.
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Who Doue's a special talent, isn't he?
Speaker 5 (14:42):
And if he if he's a half or a natural
half like they say he is, and they want to
extend him and maybe that's part of the thinking.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
And also you might have talk a point about origin
coming up. It also gives you a look at what's happening.
But it would have to be a concern for young
Clifford too. He's contract this year and.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Next and you can flip I'm looking forward to watch
playing Mars.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Actually, I think he's a really good young player and
it's got a lot of potential now Bulldogs GM of
Football feel Good has given a confusing answer when quized
about the future of Toby Sexton.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Take a look and Toby Sexton have close is a contract.
Speaker 7 (15:19):
Toby's on a journey of development. We're working with Toby
and we'll worry about the ROSSA.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Yeah, I feel good.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
They're saying that Toby Sexton is on a journey of development.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
What does that mean? I'm your half? What does that mean?
Speaker 1 (15:37):
It means that he's saying that he's still developing. Well
he's on a journey of development, but he's still development.
When you peel it back, I'm like developing as a player.
The Blake can play any better, Like he's been that
good from the last year and a half.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
They're coming first first, they are they are.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
The team at the moment, and on the weekend he
was exceptional against the Raiders.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Has he signed d C?
Speaker 1 (16:01):
I don't know or what's got us all a bit
spun here and thinking was that comment and also this tweet?
But last night, this was ten thirty eight. It was
plenty happening at the moment. Things are bubbling away behind.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
The scenes, interesting few weeks ahead.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
He's an international man and mystery Gus. He just likes
to play with our minds, the conspiracy.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
What hours well you knowing?
Speaker 6 (16:27):
Well not really, well you do. I used to, but
things went bad.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Like he's got to do with this, like what he likes.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
He's a different cat, oh, Gus. You know, it's hard
to read. He likes to keep his cards close to
his chest. He likes everyone to to to He loves
people talking and theorizing about him.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
Donald Trump with him a little bit.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
I think he's definitely a Trump supporter, I'd be Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:59):
I don't know what it is. I have no idea, Okay,
I just know.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
I just know that when when when Galvin one of
the release from the Tigers, the first club the Tigers
thought he was going to with the Bulldogs and they
still have that oppinion.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
So do you think that he'll go there? Do you
think that Gus has something up his sleep? I wouldn't.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
I wouldn't be surprised, but if I'm Toby Sexy, it's
hardly the most Yeah. But what what Gus is saying
publicly might be to throw off everybody, and what he's
saying to Toby Sexy privately it is something different altogether. Look,
I don't do not know unless you're in those four
walls of Belmore. You're only speculating. And I think that's
what Gus loves.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
It's a mystery, right, But he said big news coming.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
He's not endorsing sex and he could have easily have
resigned him one now. I probably should have. I think
they would have if they wanted him long term. You've
got d C, who we've heard is signed with the Roosters.
So if it's not DCE, who's going there or potentially
going there. It kind of reopens to me the door
to Galvin. Now, Galvin, there's no confirmation of signing with
(18:02):
Paramatter or confirming that at all of them. He's going
through everything with the Tigers at the moment. But I
just think when this all broke with Galvin, and it's
just my opinion. When I see this, I see sext
and not getting resigned. I look at his comments, and
Gus loves him, it always has. Spokes speaks highly of him,
probably his biggest support and advocate from the start of
(18:24):
the year, even when he debuted, when there was a
chance of him going there, they spoke about him playing
Locke and they were interested, but they said they weren't
and I know that, and I said that on the show.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
They said they weren't interested, but I know they were.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
All of a sudden, everything's gone quiet. Everyone's just assuming
he's going to param Matter. But they still haven't signed
Sexton and Galvin still hasn't committed to anywhere.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Is there a chance that he lands at the Dogs?
Speaker 6 (18:51):
Every chance, there's every chance.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
Even though Gus has denied their interest, He's done that
plenty of times before. He doesn't mind telling a fever
if it means getting to the end result of what
he wants. What I guess the question that you'd have
to ask is that Galvin's not a seven, he's a six,
or he's a thirteen. Burton's not a seven, he's a
(19:13):
six or is a center? So regardless of that, what's
the game he plays with Sexton? Or are they looking
for another seven?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Are we doing the manager's job? Then I let it
talk until November? Are we? How about Galvin? Yeah, you
can't tool, you know, like it's I just think there's
something going on.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
It picks the boxes too, doesn't it.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Like when when the story comes out that he wants
he wants a coach or Serraudo's the coach, isn't he He's.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Former Westfields and less money. Yeah, he wasn't going for
the money and he wanted better coaching.
Speaker 4 (19:52):
And his former mentor from Westfield Sports High is at
the Bulldogs. It's it's a system that's set up to
succeed at the moment the comp It ticks a lot
of boxes, whereas Paramatter are sitting dead last on the ladder.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Well, it doesn't make sense. And we said that at
the time.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
If you look at everything that he's management has said,
Like if you think about it, if he goes to
the Bulldogs and goes for less money and goes to
Kevin Serroudo, it's everything that Isaac Moses and his team
and Galvin said he wanted his parents.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
That's what they were saying from day one.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
You know, that's why Will perplexes the why he would
go to Paramount at that stage, because he's going to
get more money and he's not going to a lot
of question if he's going to be developed, better, coach,
better than where he is at the Tigers. You can't
question that. If he goes to the Dogs, he will,
and if he takes less to go there, then it
justifies his decision to going back to Gus. Here's what
Gus had to say about Lockey just weeks ago.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
We're already on a program, right, We're not thinking about
Lochland Galvin. We've never at any stage been involved in
any discussion regarding Lochland Galvin, and we're not going to
get into a discussion about Lochland Galvin. He's not on
our rate. We've got a different program going at the moment.
That's not to say that, you know, in five or
six years time, when I think he'll be a really
(21:07):
great player, that all clubs won't be interested in him.
At some time there he was.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
You're saying he wasn't interested in him. So I don't know.
Speaker 6 (21:19):
But if I'm off on Galvin, I'm going to dogs?
Are you not? You're not going to the Dogs? I
would think if football and premierships are.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
His motivation, and this is no disrespect to what Jason
Rowles is trying to do a paramatter, but.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
If you want to like.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
The Roosters, don't you go to Penrith.
Speaker 6 (21:36):
Well, I don't know if they're going to take him, don't.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
You go to Melbourne?
Speaker 6 (21:40):
Dogs are sitting on top of the way.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
And the Dogs happened to resigned sext and the other
clubs the.
Speaker 6 (21:45):
Cap and they got money in the cap and the
Rooster's got d C apparently apparently, but it's not announced.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I don't know what.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Anyway, Smith joined rabbitat from the Roosters. Roosters telling me
Dom Young, what's the latest with Dom? And Smith's after
the Bunnies.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
So Dom Young, it does seem like he's going anywhere.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
I thought.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Trent Robinson held himself pretty well yesterday. I thought what
he had to say, I think he explained it pretty well.
You don't agree, Crauls.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
I just think my question goes back to with Brandon.
First up Brandon.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
When Brandon went.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
To the Roosters, he had the storm, had tabled and offer.
I think the Gold Coast were chasing him. He visited
the Dolphins, he went to the Cowboys. It wasn't as
if he wasn't a wanted man. And what got him
over the line at the Roosters was the holier than
the our approach that they took him out to meet
the board. They took him for a round of golf.
He had pieces at rob He was whined and dined,
(22:48):
and Smith came out after that and he said that
they said, or Robbo said, he'll make him a better man.
Where I have a problem with it is that the
Roosters knew what they were signing. They knew they were
signing one of the game's great rogues, who was a
little bit of a wild child often on the field.
And what is it, two and a half years later
(23:09):
they've shown the door because there was a shining new
toy that came along in the form of Robson for
the Cowboys, and Robo conceded yesterday that Brandon didn't have
a great start.
Speaker 6 (23:19):
Got better last year.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
He's been hampered by injuries, but they didn't give him
the time to come good on their side of the promise.
Same with Dom Young. Now Dom Young, the Rissis didn't
go and give Dom Young, what was it, five hundred
thousand dollars a year just to be good guys. They
did it because he was playing really good football and
he had so much potential at the nights and he
came as a try scoring machine. And I understand the
(23:42):
fact that he's now been overtaken in the run. But again,
the promises were the Premierships on the horizon is what
he came down for. And again, what is it won?
Two years later he'll end up pushing his bum back
up the highway to new Castle with his reputation in tatters.
I don't believe. Look, all clubs do it. All clubs
(24:05):
signed players, they don't succeed, they move them on. What
gets me sometimes is the way that the Roosters publicly
make out and publicly dine out on the fact that
they could do it better than everyone else.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
But they have just as many failures as the other clubs.
I'm with you with the rooster of the recruitment.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
I think it's been shocking in many respects, and I
agree with Brandon Smith and I wrote it last year,
like the way that they flaunted his signing to everybody,
but particularly because they got one up over Bennett and
getting him after it had already done the deal with
Bennett at the Dolphins.
Speaker 6 (24:38):
And I've talked to Nick about it.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
It was like it was pretty shameless the way the
Roosters celebrated it. I'm not linking it to Dom Young.
And I thought the way that Robo explained it yesterday
that press conference, they weren't trying to get Dom Young out.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
The Knights approached them. I know the Nights. I know
the Knights approached them, and I know the Knights.
Speaker 4 (24:57):
But do you think that the Roosters are there to
try and do the Knight fable like they've got a
five hundred thousand dollars footballer sitting in reserve grade.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
Of course they want to get rid of him.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
And I don't think it's I don't think it's without
reason that the Knights would be trying to make the
deal go their way.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
Sure, but they're not going to. But the Knights have approached,
then they've changed and said no. They said they were
going to play some money and then changed their mind
and said we're not going to pay any and the
Rusters say no.
Speaker 6 (25:26):
I don't know how that's to a knock on the road.
I'll go back that the.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
Roosters have not made dom Young a better footballer. So
take all the rest of it out, and that's what
I look at. I look at the fact that mate,
he has not become a better footballer in their cyst.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
That's fair enough.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
But let's not just, you know, say that the Rusters
have stuffed up their recruitment because they said no, because
we're not going to pay any money.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
You can't become a better footy payer.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
Domia Well, I think when he arrived at the Knights, mate,
he was very raw, like he had to be a
work in progress, didn't He had very limited for ball
in the NRL in this system.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Yeah, it just now I'm back on Brandon Smith too.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
I think what isn't said enough about the situation brandis
Smith is what the Rusters have done for him if field.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
That isn't spoken about that a lot of people don't
know about. There wasn't there is.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
A lot that the club supported him through and with
that a lot of other clubs wouldn't have done.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
So I think that goes I reckon a.
Speaker 6 (26:30):
Lot of clubs.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
I don't believe that Melbourne wouldn't have given him support,
you know. And when they came out and said, and
the quote from Robo was along the lines that Melbourne
made you a footballer or not from Robo, sorry, from
Brandon Smith saying his conversation with Robot, they made you
a football I will.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
Make you a man.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
And that's that's to me.
Speaker 6 (26:48):
That's a slap in the face to the Storm system.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
But even when I was one of the most outspoken
about the Smith signing and I said it wasn't the
right signing when they did it, you know, so I'm
not disagreeing with you. It was just the right signing
because the Rousters needed a specialist nine. I got rid
of their Grand Final winn nine and bought a thirteen
and like and.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Tried to transform into a specialist nine.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
He can play nine and do it very good, but
he's a better lock in my opinion. And you know,
I didn't think the experiment was going to work and
it didn't, and you know I copped it a bit
over that, but you know it's just my opinion was
from the start, but you know it goes back ways.
You're not wrong, you know, with a lot of what
you're saying Crauls, but they do invest a lot into
(27:33):
their players, and I do know a lot about the
story with Brandon, so you know, I can see both
sides stick around journeys and tomorrow Sam Goodman looks to
make his claim for a world title shot. You can
all now at main event dot com dot are you
