It is the greatest rugby league stadium on the planet,
the Cauldron sun Corpse Stadium.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
It's ready for Game one.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Edward's taken too high bar and things fill over early.
Jerry Evans, I'm across the Pontmer's player were hands to coats,
runs to awards, hoses beets him Mitchell. That rounds him
up pretty quickly. Clearing comes to us for room to
move back to clearing over the top. Edwards wide Brighton

(01:08):
beats homes set sail, gives it.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
To Lomas a cracking New.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
South Wales try Cherry Evans Ponger and a good stock
by Mitch Moses.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Not only just me, but everyone. You know, everyone's got
to make one on one.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
You do it for the day, you know, for a
person next day.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Don't want to let anyone's down.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I'll stand here on this short side and fins are
passing him and.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Loses the ball.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
You feel pretty flat, to be honest about our performance.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
A chance to try and get it to Mitchell's Moses
does exactly that. Mitchell got hands an incredible ball for
Pry and.

Speaker 6 (01:45):
To We'll see what they're like when they bounce into
game too, because they're know about origin is. There's always
a response comes and robs the ear is clearing edwards.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
They got them again clearing, having it off right with boots.
Otherwise the score line would be absolutely anything. Jerry Evans
four Coats up against Coats, had a chance.

Speaker 7 (02:10):
Putn't hang on to it tentis in mid year.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
You know, I think this is a professional power.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
That is ridiculous.

Speaker 8 (02:16):
It's the worst thing I've ever seen.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Oh here's a chance New South Wales turn it over Coats.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Just like that.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
The Maromes are right back in the contest. Last tackle
clearing again, back to the right hand side, Lomax versus Homes.
Clomax makes the catch out the back. Here's Watson trying
to keep it alive.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Pops it out to eight lines.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
New South Wales Sport you look to eight changes forget too.

Speaker 9 (02:48):
That's not a decision or probably a conversation.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
For now New South Wales.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
They've taken down Queensland in the Cauldron eighteen points to six, joining.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Me, Gordon Tallas, James Hooper and Brent Reed the New
South Wales Blues going one up in game one two
good up at sun Corpse Stadium after a forty minute blitz. Gordy,
how are you feeling a little.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Bit disappointed at stages?

Speaker 5 (03:16):
Like men against Boys had a bit of a feeling
to Game two in Melbourne last year, but New South
Wales were dominant, didn't probably reach the heights of felt
sometimes like a glorified club match, but Queensland were outplayed
all over the park.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I thought the.

Speaker 8 (03:31):
Blues didn't have a bad player, and I thought as
clunky as they were at stages, they showed some signs
that if they can keep this group together, they can
develop into a real juggle in a real state of
origin force.

Speaker 10 (03:45):
And we saw the.

Speaker 8 (03:46):
Marines go on that incredible run of eighth straight series.
I'm not suggesting they can replicate or emulate that, but
I think they can actually win multiple series if they
keep this group together.

Speaker 9 (03:56):
Interesting hoops, well hoops already if they can keep that
group together with Gordy It's tough to swallow because I
think Queens and were comprehensively our play, which is really
disappointing at sun Corps Stadium. I thought it was a
bludder of the game, to be honest, one of the
most unwatchable Origins I've seen for some time, because of

(04:17):
the penalties, the stoppages, the errors and you know, obviously
disappointing performance is a long way back for Queensland. You
caught it a bludder of a game. You said a
glorified above game?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Was it?

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Because of the amount of penalties? It was a nine
to six penalty count.

Speaker 10 (04:32):
What don't it helped break?

Speaker 9 (04:33):
I mean there was penalties for things that in Origin
previous year years. I reckon they've let go When was
the last week seen fifteen penalties in the Origin game? Seriously,
And it was just it was a bit nippicky for me,
and I just think it stopped and I'm not saying
it would have affected the result. I mean queens are
second best, but it just affected the flow of the
game and it wasn't the most watchable of Origin games

(04:55):
for me.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
What do you think?

Speaker 5 (04:57):
Yeah, it didn't feel like either side got to roll
on and had a lot momentum, Like even though New
South Wales were classy, they pulled us apart at times.
It didn't feel like there was a massive role on
where it could have blown out, if that makes sense.
So I didn't know the penalty count. I knew that
someone were a little bit soft. So when it comes
to that arena, we're all talking about how good Game
three was last year, and that's what I was expecting,

(05:19):
and it didn't get It was.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Clunky, there was no real flow in the game. But
I think it was obviously clear to everyone the Blues
were the far better team, and if it wasn't so
clunky and it was more free flowing, the score might
have been even worse for Queensland. Now you mentioned it, Hoops,
you weren't happy with it. The possibility of a dynasty
we go is there. Listen, We're not even close. We

(05:42):
know that, really right, there's a long way to go.
We haven't even won to see series. But there's a
possibility with this team and that dominance last night. If
it continues that way for the next two games, this
side's got a pretty good nucleus to it and does
have the potential.

Speaker 8 (05:59):
To I'm not to be silly enough breath to go
off before acceptances and declare the dynasty after the Blues
have won one game. And I would say, in relation
to Laurie Dale and his second coming cast there right,
I'll get there. I'll just put this caveat on it.
I remember Andrew for food art right tearing coinsland apart

(06:20):
at sun Corp Stadium twenty sixteen, and he drew comparisons
with Arthur Boots and New South Wales came back to Sydney,
led in that game and looked to have it under
reasonable control. Ultimately were beaten. Then they went back up
the sun Corp and got beaten by fifty. So I've
seen too many false dawns breath. However, however, if they
can keep this side with Latrell Mitchell and Stephen Crichton

(06:42):
in the centers, Angus Crichton and Leam Martin, the Blues
did not have a bad player. Mitch Barnett, I a
payhas in the middle spencer and you coming off the
back fence, off the bench. Yes they can. Yeah, well
we're going to get that. We're going to get because
I did think that was a very point. But yes,

(07:03):
if they keep the nucleus of this team together. Absolutely,
guy one.

Speaker 7 (07:08):
It's not a row two's a pair eight.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Just let you know, don't get ahead of yourself.

Speaker 8 (07:16):
Can this term chase that maybe they can?

Speaker 5 (07:18):
Well, we have to, there's no choice how by playing
our style of footy. I thought, well, well, I think
if the ball stays and play, we're smaller, we're fitter,
we're faster. The big guys maybe get knocked up. Right,
So we didn't have a chance to play our style
of footy, which with Harry Grant and Munster and those
guys like that, it's a pretty good spine, right. And
if we move the ball around, and you know that

(07:40):
the bigger they are, if you can move them around
and take a bit out of the tank, and we
couldn't do that, it will stop start. They're fresh, they're bigger,
they're more powerful and they power through us.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
All right, let's get to Queensland because Queensland are now
officially in crisis.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
This is good.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
Mate, that produces and he's going to get I missed
the plane. I knew I should have missed the playing.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
For everyone watching this Gord, he was unaware that I
was about to happen. It took great joy in that
does he make changes?

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Now? On a serious note, like I.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Know that queens they wouldn't like to panic. It's not
a good look if you make a hell of a
lot of changes. But do they have to make changes
walking out walking out last night?

Speaker 3 (08:29):
I didn't think so. Right.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
Where there's twenty games until our next game, twenty twenty
days until the next game, right, we were talking about
DC as captain, so that's going to come up. But
we've got twenty days for those guys go back, and
it's a Wayne Bennett saying, go back and recoup, get
some get some form under your belt, you know, and
come back in and I'll see you in the next camp.
Is there going to be changes? The question for me is, right,

(08:53):
who do we bring in that? Where's the Queensland jersey
that's going to change last night's result?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Well, there's a few. There's a few.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
I mean, tell me, let's start with the first one,
because I think we should start. The big one is
DC and you know, Andrew John's, Cameron Smith, Shane Webke,
that's just the name of you that have questioned him
being in the team and whether he should be there
for Game two ice on Monday, I said to you, Gordy,

(09:20):
if they lose Game one, is that the potential that
this could be the last time we see d C
in a maro Own Jersey and if they lost, And
you said to me, it depends on how they lose. Now,
it wasn't pretty and it wasn't a good watch last night.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Well there was that talk before.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
State of Origer one and Manly played the Cowboys. Tommy
did and had a chance to go and shoot the
lights out against him and he didn't DC. So the
next couple of games is it. No one knows what
DC's doing. Is he uncertain with his future? Can he
clear that up and come in the camp and leaders?

Speaker 3 (09:54):
That's the question.

Speaker 9 (09:55):
I think you've seen this on his mind. His formers
dipped since he came out and said he was leading Manly.
And you can't tell me that this hasn't affected him
time and I think it's he's carried into camp and
I think he just needs to make He's got two weeks,
make a call, make a decision.

Speaker 10 (10:12):
I mean, we all think he's going.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
To the Rooster's Billy telling him he needed to make
the call.

Speaker 9 (10:17):
I think Billy encourages him to make the call, but
ultimately he can't make him. I think he encourages him.

Speaker 5 (10:22):
Make the call, make the call, get all the press
out of the road, so when they're gone there.

Speaker 9 (10:26):
Because I asked about in camp, what are you doing
next year? And I've changed my stance on this because
I thought before.

Speaker 5 (10:33):
At least but just back on that, at least he
did face the media.

Speaker 10 (10:36):
And yeah, Spencer, and at.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Least he faced the media.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
You are you're up face the media at least, you know,
I mean, but Spencer was waiting for the ball kick off.

Speaker 8 (10:50):
But the other side it was very that was that
said a lot about the contest, the fact that there's
been so much built up around that. And I'd love
to get your take, Gordy, I have it. I can't recall.
I can't recall seeing that previously where a team that's
gone right, let's.

Speaker 7 (11:10):
Kick it the Mexican you were playing, Gordy, if reasons,
if you reasons morely a web key or Paul having
coming off the fence right right earlier, you go, bang, well,
let's kick to him.

Speaker 5 (11:21):
If it's the start of the game, let's see where
he's at. But if he's tearing through, you go let's
keep it to the other guy.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Isn't that smart?

Speaker 10 (11:27):
Didn't he really was he he was spent to really tearing.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Why is it that bad White playing to him?

Speaker 4 (11:33):
But you give him what he wants, give him love
this from you, get under his skin.

Speaker 10 (11:41):
It was a sign of week.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
It was a week.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
Man situation, Jonathan Thurston situation. I'll tell you why you
got the Jonathan Thurston situation the back page of the
Courier Mail saying that he's a grub, right, and you've
got your opportunity to he's in I'm just telling him
my opinion. You've got the opportunity to kick to him,
try and bash the shit out of him, and set
the tone and the example for your side to say

(12:08):
we're going to get the better of you, no matter what.
The next playbook getting bashed anyway, well it could change
the momentum.

Speaker 10 (12:15):
It could like why couldn't they?

Speaker 8 (12:19):
I love putting out the Fast was the most explosive
player of the game. It's the most explosive carrier of
the game.

Speaker 10 (12:27):
And the way it.

Speaker 8 (12:27):
Was built up to Brad's point, the fact that it
was on the back page of the Courier Male and
then for Coeensland. They'd clearly game plan that that was
a tactic, that that obviously going right. When Spencer comes on,
let's go to the other side of.

Speaker 10 (12:40):
The field, get under his skin.

Speaker 8 (12:42):
To me, that's picking a fight and not showing up.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Like.

Speaker 5 (12:47):
It was great theater because when he warmed up the
first time he run down the sideline, he was into
the crew.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
It was so cool. It was a great theater.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
And you know what would have but I had Tony
Carroll and Petro, you would have wanted to do it.
I knew, but maybe maybe they didn't. Maybe DC as
a captain should have the shot, right, But I'm not out.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
They don't have Tony and Petro. Don't they have any
enforcers that can well maybe not.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Did you watch the game?

Speaker 9 (13:13):
I did, right, So, like Corey Hawsebro, I need to
look at bringing bringing bringing a black like Corey hawseb
for game too. You know, Tino was obviously I think
I thought Tin I tried to be enforcement and perhaps
went too far at times. Tino because we missed his
aggression last year. I think we all thought this is
the guy who's going to stop us being bullied this year,
and I think he went out there to make a statement,

(13:33):
but at times maybe it went a little bit too far.
So you've got to get bringing someone to support him.
And I think Corey Hawsber is the old because you've
got some fire in the belly and he's not going
to take it backwards step. And I reckon, if Corey
Hawsper is out there, he's probably saying to someone kick
it to Spenser.

Speaker 10 (13:47):
I'll take him on.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Okay, I'm not going.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
To let you too off the whole gey, your passionate
Coueenslanders defending your state.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Should DCE be picked for Game two or not?

Speaker 3 (13:57):
I pick it?

Speaker 9 (13:58):
I was about to says there and this has changed
before the series.

Speaker 10 (14:02):
I thought, I think he's there again. He's your captain,
he's your captain.

Speaker 9 (14:08):
He deserves to play game two because the forward pack
let him down the other night. So I would pick him, yes,
but forward the pack was awful. I would pick it,
but I would say, DC, that's very clear.

Speaker 10 (14:20):
We don't win. We're starting again. You're going, okay, this
is it?

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Goody.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
I can agree with okay, no, no, and I can go, hey, mate,
this is your last game right Because Darren Lockey got
tapped on the shoulder.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
I think in six and moment inspect.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
To he Petro and Stephen Price said if we don't
win this game, this is your last game. This is
this is your last game for Queens and maybe maybe
do something't say this is it?

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Do you want it or not?

Speaker 10 (14:43):
It's a huge decision though.

Speaker 8 (14:45):
It's because as everybody likes and respects Billy Slater, and
he had a red hot start to his State of
Origin career as a coach. I think he won four
out of his first five games, but since then and
with Michael Maguire coming in last year and now the
result from last night, Billy's hit some challenges and if

(15:05):
he was a new South Wales coach, he'd be copping
a lot more heat than what he is already copying
north of the Border. So the decision around daily is
critical because if he doesn't get it right, then all
of a sudden, that's two series opinion.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
Do you think didn's out and now State of Origin
number seven that can lead us to a state of
ogin victory.

Speaker 8 (15:27):
Well, I listened to Joey John's Last Night and Shane
Webber you today and the fact that those two prepared
to say that they think Tommy didn't could provide more creativity,
spark and energy to the Marines attack.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
That's good enough for me and man coming at forteen
or so well as you could possibly be coming too.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
I think.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
I know it was late in the game, but if
you watched when tom went to half, when Harry came
back on the last five or ten minutes, it might
have a bit longer. Actually didn't was quite effective in
that position, look dangerous and more so than in DC
for that game.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
It's a bit cool, to be honest with you.

Speaker 8 (16:00):
It is a huge call, which a big because he
plays on the right. Tommy normally plays on the left
with the Cowboys, so already they're making a big call
that he's got to go over.

Speaker 10 (16:10):
It's a different side of the field. They've got nothing
to loose because they're already well I do, but they're
like they're already they're expected.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Maybe to go to Perth and lose, the expected to
win this series.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
He probably.

Speaker 10 (16:29):
Thinks they can win.

Speaker 9 (16:31):
I said, I expect the Bill is the one picking
the team, and he probably thinks they can win. So
and he probably thinks they can win with a lot
of the Blakes who were there the other night.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
There's a lot of things that we've thought this year
that hasn't happened. Harry Grant what a player is? I
love him, great player, but I think it has to
be said last night was probably his worst performance, well
first worst forty minutes I've seen ever play, definitely in
a Queensland Jersey. I mean, let's just have a look

(17:01):
at this. Let's have a look at this because he
sets the scene here a little bit with Harry, and
it shows.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
Us his effectiveness as a.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Bench player in origin coming off the bench as opposed
to when he starts. Now, when he starts, they have
never won. It's started four times for zero wins, and
that was last night was one of them. When he's
come off the bench in eight appearances, he's won six
of them. So that gives us an indication of how
he plays off the bench and how he plays when

(17:28):
he starts.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
Now, let's get your thoughts on this. How did you
see it?

Speaker 5 (17:32):
That's when Ben hunts around the ruck as well, and
you're playing with you know, two number nine and he's
coming on and there's no doubt it was an uncomfortable
night for Harry and maybe when the Sting's out of
the game. He does do some of his better work,
but I don't think you know starting him or not starting.
I know those stats are there, but it doesn't mean
Harry's not still in the game playing his best.

Speaker 8 (17:53):
Definitely an off night by his standards, and you can
look at the kick when he puts across. He puts
a crossfield kick in on the last tackle, it ends
up being a seven tackle set that's ineffective. Then he
gets whacked by one of the Blues goun Frodada out
at dummy half, loses the ball. Then he tries to
on the last tackle when it looked as though nobody
else really knew what was on, he decides he wants

(18:16):
to go on his own out of dummy half. So
certainly by Harry's standards, I actually thought he might have
fell victim, like when he gave the silly penalty away
trying to kick it Mitch Moses with the ball.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
I rekon.

Speaker 8 (18:28):
A big focus for the Morons off the back of
last year was not being bullied after what happened in Melbourne,
and they spoke about it in the build up to
the game about how teenags.

Speaker 10 (18:36):
Back our enforces back.

Speaker 8 (18:38):
I felt as though being penalized early for grabbing Lamas
around the head, Harry trying to kick at the ball.
They were trying to assert some authority and not let
the Blues stand over them.

Speaker 10 (18:48):
But at backfight, I think, remember Harry cameny of this game.

Speaker 9 (18:51):
He don't played one game in four or five six weeks, right,
so he's a little bit underdone. But I also think
it's worth considering starting off the bench.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
I think that had nothing to do with it. I've
got my take on Harry and I watch him very closely.
I mean, this kick here clearly wasn't planned. It was
a big turning point. They've got two of the best
kickers from that range in the game, DC and Monster.
But you see when Harry plays, he takes too many steps.
A lot of the time that was just a kick,
but I think he actually took the He hurt their

(19:21):
forwards last night too. There's a number of times where
Carrigan and a few others were on the advantage line,
but he takes two or three steps, then Carrigan has
to step back and then they couldn't gain any momentum.
And a few times you notice that when Cameron and
DC got the ball. They had the new South Wales
defense in their face. What Harry needs to do is
needs to either give service straight off the ground, like

(19:43):
directly straight off the ground, or if he runs, he
runs and things pass later because he gets caught.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
In Amen's land a little bit.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
And you talk about them being out of sync and
not fluent in their attack last night, the first forty
minutes or the first twenty at least is the most critical.
And he's a great player, don't get me wrong, but
I've seen this sneaking into his game the last couple
of years and it really stood out last night in
that first forty minutes, and I think it really hurt
the team. I'm not saying I don't pick him. He
needs to be in the side, but it's just what

(20:13):
they do and how he works on that heading into
the games down the track, so he can be a
starting nine and you don't need to worry about that.
You see, like even here, he went to get the
short side come back, and look he just gets dominated.
He jumps out, he skips across here, gives it to DC.
There's nearly a shepherd here there in no means then
either give the pass or run the board.

Speaker 10 (20:31):
I notice breath.

Speaker 8 (20:32):
I noticed there were stages that looked as though some
of his teammates were a little frustrated with the vision Monthster.
There is saying what's doing? And that wasn't the only instance.
There's some others that were having a look at the
game again today.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
So that was obviously the plan, right, that key to
get over the top of two orward coats, that was
obviously the plan.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
But it wasn't for him to execute that. And it's
okay to take that on.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
If you're inform and you're confident and you're well and
he's on the front foot, but you know, he just
looks like he looked like he went away from the
game plan at times in that first forty and making
a few areas and penalties didn't help. Again, he's a
legend and I love him, and he's he's up there
in the best two or three nines in the calm.
But last night it was it was just to me,
it's stood out, should.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
He start then or not.

Speaker 9 (21:19):
I don't necessarily think he has to broth. I mean,
you could stick Ruben cotterr in there for maybe the
first twenty minutes, maybe shuffle move, move and codder off
the edge and play maybe a firmore or room and
played hooker and twenty minutes just play.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
I think Billy Slater's got the direct line.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
He's just pressing that jumping jumping the Dumby out for
the first twenty minutes.

Speaker 10 (21:45):
Just jump, just jump in the Dumby ut at state
of origin level where you could do it. So I'm
just giving us some examples of what they can want.

Speaker 9 (21:54):
Kurt Man's obviously, you can play Kurt Man as your
forte and potentially you could start the game and have
Harry Grant starting on the bench. There's a couple of
options there.

Speaker 10 (22:02):
I don't mind that. I don't mind the idea kiping
Harry out of the firing one.

Speaker 9 (22:05):
For we sure those stats, the stats speak for themselves, right,
so they've got to look at alternatives.

Speaker 8 (22:10):
And I'm throwing a couple up there for Billy. I
think sometimes statistics can be like matches. They're dangerous in
the wrong ends. He had a bad night, no doubt,
but he's a superstar.

Speaker 10 (22:20):
Harry Grant.

Speaker 8 (22:21):
He starts for Melbourne, he starts for Australia. He'll want
to make amends for that performance.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
But yeah, I mean I didn't mean to give him
motivation there, but you know, just watching the game, to me,
it stood out to me last night.

Speaker 3 (22:35):
I really did.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
And again like this isn't heavy criticism of him his
performance last night. Yes, but I think if he gets
that right then the best the rest of the team
will benefit from it.

Speaker 5 (22:45):
And six weeks ago against Manly, he pulled him apart
like a hot joke.

Speaker 11 (22:48):
Like he was so good around the right, he's mainly
so Like there may be the month out, you know,
just not not in and around it. How many changes.

Speaker 10 (23:00):
Already to this coinsland, So I'm curious.

Speaker 9 (23:02):
Okay, I'd bring in Horsebro. I'd look at Cobbo, certainly,
look at Cobbo rather than for who I'm just trying
to follow Awaker, probably Cobbo, potentially Cobbo for Val. I
think VAL's thorn has been average here. I think he
made three eras the other night. I'd look at maybe Jaden's.

(23:23):
I'd start with the Jaden se or Jaden Sewer or
potentially both fur more on the edge.

Speaker 10 (23:28):
If they go with my plan of Reuben.

Speaker 12 (23:31):
On, he on, hey on, make a few into the
loyalty pick and stick. You've missed you missed the point
of that you only you're only loyal when you win.
We're coming off a losing series and we lost the
opening game again.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
So when New South Wales used to lose and you'd
write articles about how we don't pick and stick and
we're unloyal and all that, when you know, I.

Speaker 10 (23:52):
Didn't write that when you when you won, you make
changes after winning. Often that was your problem.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Okay, you've never criticized I was making changes over the years.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
So how many changes we three?

Speaker 1 (24:06):
There was more than three cost many changes to the
to the squad, but there's three new faces.

Speaker 5 (24:14):
You agree with some of those American Hawns was the
American Cobo was close and we did struggle to get
some meters off the backfield so when they were kicking
like I found that we struggled with smaller bodies bringing
it back that we didn't get any momentum out of
the backfield.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
And I'm sure that that.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
Let's get in the fours, they got dominated, they've got
hambled last night by New South Wales.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
How can they fix that area?

Speaker 8 (24:39):
Well, Gordi, I was going to ask you because ready
just mentioned Jaden Sewell, surely a player with his style
of aggression he's billing at this level. Previously he's played
in Grand finals. Do you do you think that he
could help in terms of because this is the first
set from last night and New South Wales were just

(25:00):
all through the middle.

Speaker 3 (25:01):
Yeah, look this first set of the match.

Speaker 5 (25:03):
I don't think we like we got ourselves in the
right position to dominate and tackle and slow it down.
Tina and Mu I thought did a really good job.
But let's just give news. They were just too big
and too strong. Sometimes you play those games and they're
too big and too strong, and I just keep on
thinking to myself all days, who do we put in
there that stops it?

Speaker 1 (25:23):
And sometimes you just can't stop it. So Linnet, they're
not getting any smaller or any slower.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
You just have to fix it.

Speaker 5 (25:32):
But they're the ones that created, so they go there
and I've got faith in these guys, right, So and
Tin Lindsay collins Hawse was another big body in the middle,
right and he's a bit mad.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
So like then you look at those guys as well.

Speaker 5 (25:45):
But I you know, we didn't put any pressure on, like,
we didn't move them around, Like as I said that,
we didn't move around. We didn't use our speed. So
our asset was our speed I thought out well with
Tavy and like in the air, we didn't get to
use it, but we got dominated that first set. That
was that was a fight club.

Speaker 8 (26:02):
It was.

Speaker 1 (26:02):
It was like hang on, very unusual for any team
off the kickoff the run fifty, you know, like it
never happens. You're not in origin, it never happened. So
were you worried when you saw that first seven.

Speaker 5 (26:14):
Well, when they got over the halfway and then when
they kicked Normally you catch it on about the twenty
or thirty and then you're bringing them back and you're
getting tackled sixty meters off.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
Your own tryline. But they made it.

Speaker 5 (26:25):
Yeah, and Barnett's not the like not being rid and
they disrespect. It's not the biggest front rower bringing it
back either, Like it's not. But it's not the biggest guy,
you know. But he did pick out Reuben Cotter and
he's not the biggest guy either.

Speaker 8 (26:38):
You think a start of Origin often you think of
that famous vision of on Shane Webb and webe having
a fight for every millimeter to get out of that
in goal. Whereas last night kick off, that opening set. Yeah,
and that was off the opening player of the game
last night.

Speaker 9 (26:54):
We didn't see that we're playing a house man handled Queensland.
We just didn't have an answer to him, or was Aeo.
To be fair, those two dominated in the middle of
the r so we've got to fin answer those two.

Speaker 10 (27:04):
I don't think it was just pass three.

Speaker 8 (27:05):
I actually thought the one thing the Blues Pack did
sensationally was playing as a unit. So Leam Martin didn't
have a lot of carries, but damn he was good
scrapping Angus Crochton weapon on the minutes stopped. He was
great stop with the football. He was absolutely brilliant. But
he wasn't alone either.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
They hunted back three, back five like you lo Max,
and we'll get to that later on now. The strike
or lack of it for the Maroons was a worry
pong a hammer sided and we mentioned Cobbo. Yeah, just
watching it love a couple of times we thought we
could get him on the right and you know when
the trolley can buy it in a little bit, but
we just didn't have the speed.

Speaker 9 (27:44):
We didn't have like like you know, just a and
toy held the past past rather than pask he had
a great game, but we.

Speaker 5 (27:52):
Did throw a forward past the valve, you know, and
there was that ball in the air. But yeah, and
then it was a six points and four points in
our last two games, so we're struggling.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
To get points. Well.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
Defense is unbelievably. You saw fel Homes get bundled over
the sideline four minutes.

Speaker 1 (28:07):
Into the Would you bring Cobo and is what I'm
trying to get.

Speaker 9 (28:09):
I think you've got I think you've got to be both.
As I said, I think you need a couple of changes.
And I think he's an obvious one, right because he's
a big body, he's physical and you know, I think
we need to.

Speaker 10 (28:22):
Match him in that and that in that area. I
don't think we did it the other night.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
All right, Now, you mentioned earlier hoops Billy. Is he
under a lot more pressure now heading to Perth. I
think that's quite obvious.

Speaker 3 (28:33):
I think that.

Speaker 8 (28:34):
Well, the vision after the game when they showed inside
the sheds and Billy was just having a moment to himself.
You can see the heat that That's what State of
Origin is. It's such an enormous juggernaut in terms of
the spectacle of the game and the pressure. It's as
high as the stakes get and it would be emotionally,

(28:55):
physically and mentally draining. And last night Billy looked like he.

Speaker 3 (28:59):
Looks shocked as well.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
I think you have shocked because Billy such the consummate professional.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
He prepares more.

Speaker 1 (29:06):
Better than anyone else when he as a player now
a coach and you know, when you're sitting in the
box and watching that performance, he would have been thinking
what is going on here because they weren't even close.
But yes, it's a big job for him, So that's
a hard thing. I think if you play well and
get beaten as a coach, you probably take a lot
of positives.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
Right.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
But when in the game three last year, we couldn't
have been prouder of the way they played, right. But
I went through an era like this when New South
Wales were dominant. Andrew Johnson, I mortal, was wearing fourteen
through most of my career when I went to play
against New South Wales. Queensland just need to find a
way to scrap, right, We just need to find a
way to scrap and find a style that suits us.
And New South Wales, you know, they were big, they

(29:48):
were dominant, like they keep on coming through your front door.

Speaker 3 (29:50):
But we've got to find a way to stop it.
And that's all what it is.

Speaker 8 (29:53):
You touched on Carlen Ponger and the Hammer a moment ago,
does Billy possibly? The Hammer is a fullback a lot
of the time at club level and electric. He's an
X factor, he's got speed, he's dangerous. Ponges club form
has been flat by his standards, and I thought he
carried that into the Origin Arena.

Speaker 10 (30:14):
It didn't spark him.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
You know.

Speaker 8 (30:16):
There was talk during the week that being in the
better company of better players that would ignite him and
let him light it up.

Speaker 10 (30:22):
But I thought Carlin struggled behind.

Speaker 9 (30:25):
If you went back to club football the next couple
of weeks have played really well, Kalyn, because you're right,
his form hasn't been great and he started the season
really well, but he's he's suffered as Newcastle suffered.

Speaker 10 (30:34):
But I don't think you throw calun Palm around. I
think at some point Karen will turn it around.
