2024 marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This is the law that expanded federal hate crimes law to include sexual orientation and gender identity. It is also the last year of the annual Matthew Shepard Foundation gala.
