Sistem zonasi sekolah menjadi polemik akhir-akhir ini. Pasalnya, calon siswa tidak lagi secara bebas mendaftar ke sekolah impiannya jika tempat tinggalnya jauh atau di luar zonasi sekolah tersebut. Sebenarnya kebijakan semacam ini sudah pernah diterapkan tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Namun, kini area zonasi lebih dipersempit lagi.
Kemendikbub beralasan bahwa penerapan kebijakan ini untuk mewujudkan perataan kualitas sekolah. Sayangnya, fasilitas dan kualitas guru antar-sekolah masih sangat timpang. Bijakkah kebijakan Kemendikbud ini? Apa sih implikasi dari kebijakan ini? Dan kalau kita memang sepakat kualitas sekolah tidak boleh terlalu timpang, artinya tidak ada sekolah yang favorit banget dan buruk banget, bagaimana memulainya?
