The Great Commission

When Jesus gave the Great Commission to His followers, He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Often, we focus on the “of all nations” part, and that part is really important. We do need to spread the Good News Gospel to the entire earth. But you know who else needs to know the Gospel? The person right next to you. Your co-worker, your friend, your brother-in-law. We need to pay attention to who needs to know God’s love wherever we are. This is the daily work of evangelism. George Verwer once said, “The Great Commission is more than a call for you or me to leave where we are and go somewhere else. There is of course a great need for people to go, but there is a greater need for each of us to take up our own responsibility as part of the Church’s response to the Great Commission; to be personally involved in whatever our particular role may be.” This personal responsibility can be challenging. It affects our daily lives and interactions. But it means that we should be advancing the kingdom wherever we go and whatever we do. Spreading God’s love should just be part of who we are, a natural reaction to God’s work in our lives. We are all invited and ordered to get involved in fulfilling the Great Commission.
