母权制是女性在新石器时代发明的，人类第一种复杂的社会组织形态。它通过母亲的谱系，把几代人团结在一起，建立了稳固的社会单元，奠定了人类文明的基础。
而父权制也是一种发明，但它是基于掠夺、杀戮和摧毁。在此之前以女性为中心的社会，无论是旧石器还是新石器，人类没有“我可以统治她人、我比别人高一等”的意识。发明欧亚大陆上的父权制的游牧男人们，是在离开了他们草原上的母亲和姐妹之后的游荡中，才发明了这个以暴力和占有为基础的社会形态。
虽然他们一步步抹掉了当时全球范围内的母权社会，但母权制却没有我们相信的那么脆弱。因为历史性的失败，让父权社会里的人对它充满了怀疑和不理解。但它其实具有惊人的强韧性和稳固性，历经5000年父权文明的打压，依然存在于世。它只是暂时退隐，随时还会复活。
对历史的假设，在充分而证明之前，只能是猜测。但认真地去证明一个假设，需要付出艰辛的工作，需要从情感、思维模式和行为习惯上，真正代入被研究的对象。84岁的海德每天在偏僻的村里辛劳地工作，挖掘和传递母权社会的知识。希望更多的后来者能接过她孤独的火把。
