(02:01):
about especially about India, the landof unity in diversity. But first,
welcome to the show. Tom WellAj, thanks again for being here and
letting me be here and us together. This is Chat number five of a
special series that we created several monthsago. And with each chat, we've

(02:24):
gained exposure, we've gained self understandingof what we're doing. And from my
point and to our listeners, andI'm want to say our listeners because I
have basically my listeners who have beento talk to Brazil. You have your
listeners who are from the KAJ masterclass, and I think what we have done

(02:47):
successfully is to melt several of thosetogether, because what you do, what
I do. We talk about businessinterests, all right, and I've spoken
about business interests globally. You've donethe same, but we've decided sometime to
go let's be more specific. You'rein India, You're in New Delhi,
and I'm here close to Campinus inBrazil, and why don't we talk more

(03:10):
about these two countries, which arehuge economic powerhouses. We've spoken recently about
the positivity in the business environment,so for me, it's just natural.
For you, I think it islet's just talk more about India and today's
question that I have for our chat. Looking out and speaking for many Brazilians

(03:32):
here, India is an unknown. We really don't know much about India or
Indians as business persons or as personsand cultures. But as we look out
and see India, look at iton Google Maps, and see how large
it is and how expansive, wetend to think. As people think about

(03:54):
Brazil is one thing, India iscertainly not one thing. And the last
couple of weeks, I've been reallypositively attracted to a recent announcement by an
Indian company called Badja Auto. Theyseem to be world class manufacturers of motorcycles

(04:18):
in India and they have recently announcedtheir first major investment in manufacture outside of
India and that manufacturing base will bein Brazil. So for a first time
investment, they're coming to Brazil.So you and I A J. I

(04:39):
think we're talking about the right thing. And so major companies like Baja Auto
have looked out to Brazil as amarket and they've seen something very favorable.
So today if you can share withus talk a little bit about the regional
aspects of India and which are thoseeconomic a locomotives in each one of those

(05:01):
regions. So after you, thankyou, thank you Tom. Absolutely absolutely
what we are talking is absolutely importantand important to a lot of people,
especially small businesses who can look forbase and means to get into and into
the opportunities that India and Brazil tooffer. A lot of Indian businesses online

(05:28):
offline can look at you know,at each other's places and that is the
good part of it. And aswe have talked to you and see Bajaj
Auto, India's top company, wantto Brazil, and not that it has
gone because of we are talking, but this is This shows that a lot
of interest is there, you know, in both both countries about businesses India

(05:51):
and Brazil. So we expect thata lot of exchange in not in the
in terms of just business, butalso in terms of culture. In aspects
we lead to a lot of youknow, benefit and that is the topic
we started with. You know,India crust Brazil equals to success and that
is what the good parties and Ihope this relationship will become stronger as though

(06:15):
not only we look at bricks, but we had many bricks to this and
make it a great foundation, agreat building for the coming future. Now
talking about India and India is abig place. We are one and that
is why you know, India iscalled a land of unity in diversity.

(06:35):
A lot of diversity is there indifferent regions, in terms of language,
in terms of the way people wantto live their life. And but one
thing is there, the term Indiaitself puts everything together. Yesterday we had
we celebrated our seventies seventh Independence Dayand you know, every year this reminds

(06:59):
us of how hard fought our freedom, boss, and it has not been
easy. You know, many manypeople laid down their lives for it and
that every year it reminds us thateven whatever different things are different, and
it is, but in almost everypart of the world, the important thing

(07:20):
is as a nation, we mustcherish, we must we must value out
independence. And independence is not justabout, you know that freedom from one
rule to another, but freedom interms of your ideas, in the in
terms of your thought process, freedomto be who you are, and that
is that can only happen if youhave that political freedom. And that is

(07:45):
where you know. But coming downto the topic, Tom, you know,
India we'll talk about today. We'lltalk about New Deli, Deli,
Moon by Bangalou, Kolkata and ShakaPutnam, you know, as we talked
about, and that I will adda couple of more cities. So first
let's talk about you know, thecapital of India, New Deli. So

(08:07):
this that's where you are today, right, yes, yes, indeed indeed
so New Delhi almost everyone has heardabout it. New Delhi is the is
the called room of a lot ofthings, a lot of international business keep
on happening, of a lot ofpolitical leaders, business leaders. They all
want to meet the people's eight ship. But it's the capital of India political

(08:30):
and economic hub. And if youask about the business culture, you know
it can be you can say abit formal, but the big thing for
people to know is that that isonly at the outst. There is a
saying in Delhi is that in Hindithey say is that Deli had diluaki.

(08:54):
So this Delhi is about people youknow, who think from the heart,
who has a big part. Sowhat that actually means is that Indy a
lot of people like in India asthe culture is. Maybe one can see
it, one may not see it. But the fact is that Indians value
relationships, even in business relationships. So even for people in Brazilians, especially

(09:20):
if you're dealing with an Indian personor have an Indian partner, do understand
the formal part is just that outerlyinside establish a good relationship well done.
That's exactly what we've done. That'stake relationships take time, but they also

(09:43):
take energy. Time. Everybody hastime. We need to do, as
we have done mutually is dedicate someenergy to that time. Absolutely absolutely,
So know your partner, business partner, know your know the businesses that you
are dealing. It spent some timeto also understand that you are dealing with

(10:05):
the right people. It's the sameeverywhere. Don't get just swayed by building
an interpersonal relationship. Make it alsofrom the pragmatic part of it, know
that you have got the right partnersand that strong intercut. You know,
interconnections, interpersonal connection will lead togood business these for you. And and

(10:28):
in the English is spoken quite well, even if the very small percentage of
people in the Brazils speak English. But those who speak they have the option
of speaking English with people in Delhior business partners. Many would know that
even you know some more, someless. A lot of Hindi is spoken

(10:48):
in this part of word of outof our country. Punjabi is spoken close
areas of Punjab, the Punjab Haryanais there, so that is the a
lot of language will be There's alot of people in people in the business
circle who are from Punjab. Theytalk into Punjabi. But overall you can
communication. You can communicate in Englishas much as you want. No problem

(11:13):
at all, So you can dothat. And we know about the technology.
If at all there is a problem, you always have the Google translator
or any other translator that you want. So yeah, to that point,
without understanding a language. Most peopledo understand numbers, and to the business

(11:35):
part, they do understand markets, and markets are translated in numbers. And
back to the point of the BajaAuto coming to Brazil, somebody somewhere in
any language looked at the numbers inBrazil and thought those numbers were attractive for

(11:58):
the growth of the motorcycle market. And that's that's that's any market. So
numbers speak probably louder than any language. But you need to look at the
opportunities and then find those numbers. And the relationship can help us do that
right, right, and always move. When you ever get a chance to

(12:20):
come to Telly, you should knowthat it is a very historical city and
so go do your business, butalso do the do visits some of the
places. Just yesterday itself. Youknow, every year the Indian Prime Minister
speaks from the ramparts of the RedFort and he gives you know that speech

(12:41):
to the nation. So yesterday ourprime minister another in the movie, he
gave the speech from Red Fort. And they as a prime minister, they
always lay down their plans their visionsevery year or the country and a lot
of you know that people keep watchthat particular event with great listen to the

(13:01):
leaders to a great thing. Soalways come to New Delhi, Delhi and
then to business and also know aboutDeli because this is the place to be
if you want to be. It'sa political a lot of things. You
can learn what is happening. Andalso you have got the Brazil embassy here

(13:22):
in or and Z group if Iunderstand how the name has changed, so
you have that embassy in New Denythere. So we can but to the
regions once we go to New Delliand make and start. Where are the
other relevant regions to go to fromfrom a business aspect. From the other

(13:43):
business aspect is India and New Delhi. As I said, is the is
the political capital, the commercial capital, the business capital. Financial capital is
Moombie on the western side you knowof our looking I'm looking at my map
right now. Is you're tlacking allright? Delhi is on the north side,
you know. And on the westside we have got Mumbai and there

(14:09):
you will see people speaking a lotin Marathi. That's the region there.
It's in is the capital of Maharashtra. That is where the seat of the
regional government in state government is andit is very very known place. It
figures in a lot of things,a lot of writings, a lot of

(14:30):
business activities, A lot of flightsoriginate from there too, so many parts
of the If one is to flyfrom New Delhi to Mumbai, how long
of a flight is that? Thatis about one hour forty minutes in most
of the cases, do not stopflights. Mostly it's one hour forty minutes.
A few minutes here and there, but that's that's the time that they

(14:54):
show it most of the time. How many many flights are there from New
Delhi to Mumbai, Mumbai to NewDelhi. But you know, and depending
on depending on when you book yourtickets. That is a very busy zone.
That is a very busy a lotof not only airline traffic, but
a lot of you know, highwaytraffic, on road traffic. It's between

(15:18):
a lot of things move on andthere is a it's also a sports city,
right, very very important city.As I said, is the port
shipping for shipping zone and for ctransportation it's important as well. Yeah it
is, but it isn't I don'tknow in terms of how much you know,

(15:39):
in terms of as a port itworks, but there is there is
a good amount of but we arewe'll be talking about Shaka put the problem
in the Indian state of you know, in the southern Indian state. Uh
there, we have got Putnam thatis a port city. We will to
that. But Mumbai is very veryimportant being the financial capital we have thought

(16:03):
it is it is were there. You know, it touches the Arabian seed
and if your flight land you cansee a lot of seed down. Well.
We now money makes progress walk rightright or for people absolutely and for
people who want to know. Wehave got our Central Bank, that is

(16:25):
the Result Bank of India that issituated in Mumbai. We have got we
have got also the BSc, theBombay Stock Exchange and NSC the National Stock
Exchange. So that is where thewhen you talk about India in terms of
the stock market, right Mumbai isthat that for comparison, that would be

(16:48):
the city of sound Polo would bewhat you just said in India, would
would be said about sound Polo inBrazils the financial setter stock markets and again
money talks right right now, movingfurther south, I see on the map
Bengaluru, we were further south. The idea tell us about that yeah,

(17:11):
I will come. Mumbai is veryfast city, fast paced environment. It
is also known as the maximum city. They say, say it's the city
of dreams. We have got theBollywood there, I will. It's a
big industry, Bollywood, you know, and that's where it is. So
all of the Indian focused films. We say, that's where they come,

(17:33):
that's where they start. Yes,a lot of regional movie industry is very
strong, especially in the southern partof it. A lot of movies get
made on the regional, regional aspect. But Mumbai, in terms of Bollywood,
it is the place that the worldknows of. Rest we have got
the Hollywood and other woods that theyhave. They have named for regionals in

(17:56):
a regional industries, but Bollywood isthe way and they've got marks in them.
Also in terms of the business culture, remember it is it is a
more formal culture there. They alsoprioritize relationship, but they want a quick
decision making, very professional environment, much more focused on on the work at

(18:18):
hand. People are always very busypeople. It's a very fast paced environment,
very productive, very objective. Yeah, it is. It is like
that because because a lot of youknow, people travel on long distances Deli
is a bit, you know, spread all across in an essay in a
rounded manner, but Mumbai is muchmore in a straight line. So people

(18:40):
travel a lot of distances. Theyjust want that, you know, their
work to be done, and thereis not much of you know, time
to spend as much as they wouldlike to. I personally prefer Delhi.
I worked in Mumbai for two years, so I know I love that place.
There are so many benefits there. But in terms of I've stayed in

(19:02):
Deli, I've studied here. Ilike a bit of a laid back approach.
Not that Deli is laid back, but you can afford to be laid
back if you want to be here. So that is why I have always
preferred to be in Deli that way. But I keep on traveling Mumbai is
I like it. I've worked there, you know, but given a choice,

(19:23):
people if they are going from Iknow many friends who have gone to
Mumbai but always want to get itback a posting in Deli if it is
possible, And many people like Mumbaio. So that's it. But in terms
of business environment, that's the wayMumbai age financial capital. That's the place
to be one of the places. It is, it is, it is,

(19:47):
it is, And in fact thereyou've got a lot of nightlife.
Deli will it has its own nightlife, but not like the same as Mumbai.
Mumbai will be open to a greatextent. Say one o'clock to go
clock, you'll find something Delhi itall if not much happens after set ten

(20:07):
o'clock eleven o'clock. It maybe insome some areas. Things are changing here
also, but that's the way cities, you know series that's it has absolute
customs absolutely and so now let's goto the to Bangalore. You can see
it is the tech hub of Indiaand a lot of you know, innovation

(20:30):
work that is innovation driven city whetheris very good there. And you know,
a bit of informal culture is theirbusiness culture. A lot of emphasis
is their own you know, collaborationand entrepreneurship. So most of these firms
you will see tech firms they areor a lot of delivery firms, they

(20:52):
are all based out of Bangloo.There. They like to be settled there.
Obviously, state governments they have takenmany initiatives from the earliest stages and
the city has developed that way.And there you will find in a very
cosmopolitan culture, but a lot ofalso emphasis on the on the local culture

(21:15):
also, So there you will findpeople speaking in the regional languages. Just
like in Mumbai they speak Marathi inbut in Banglodu they will speak more of
Kurnal than that is the regional becauseit's a part of Karnatica. They're also
Tamil is spoken a lot of itborders the state of Tamil Nadu, so

(21:37):
a lot of emphasises there are alot of people speak Tamil. Then there
is the state of Andhra Pradesh alsoyou know it's a lot of people there
speak Telugu analysis spoken also, sodon't get reshartain if you want to communicate
with people. Bangalore is a veryeducated city. A lot of these tech
people are you know, you're inthat part of the country. And one

(22:02):
thing in terms of the tech techbeing the tech hub. Please also remember
that though we won't have an extensivediscussion on there, but Hyderaba is the
new is a new place coming upvery strongly in terms of that tech.
That government there in that state isalso you know, he is putting in
a lot of emphasis. So youwill continue to hear a lot about Hydrabat

(22:25):
two. In terms of that techpart, even Pune you have got a
lot of that is where you talkabout Bayad Auto. A lot of tech
tech driven companies are also based inPune and there is a lot of you
know, a lot of areas arethere which have a lot of tech.
So you mentioned at the beginning ofthe diversary. So from a business standpoint,

(22:48):
businesses diverse. So each region thatwe can find and see an engine
there are first different types of opportunitiesright right and so and even very close
to New Delhi is the city ofNoida. There also you will find this
tech thing coming up. So alot of companies are here in Noida,

(23:11):
also very close to New Delhi, just few kerimeters down. You know,
it's a very or not old city, a new city in that companies and
a created city and it has comeup. So a lot of people stay
in this part. It falls underthe state of Udesh. But a lot
of modern facilities. There are alot of tech companies are also. So

(23:33):
this is this is about the techpart. When we are talking about Bangalulu
and let's now go to call Dada, another major city, very very ancient
city. People know about it.It was the former capital of India during
the British period. Then they shiftedit, that was in the early nineteen
hundreds. Then the shifted it fromthat part from Polkata to New Delhi.

(23:57):
It is a very very big commercialhub, a very you know, old
commercial hub, and that is whereyou know, in terms of the east
eastern India. So there it isthe big city, very very big city
of eastern India. A lot ofpeople want to do their work from Kolkata.

(24:18):
It is, it is a commercialhub. A lot of people have
settled there also from different parts ofthe of the country and they do their
business here there. In terms ofthe business culture, it may sound conservative,
a bit formal culture, but therelationship there in the eastern part of
India always remember people, their valueit much much, perhaps a bit more

(24:45):
than in any other part of Soeven though it may Inada, they speak
Bengali, very educated people. Theyspeak English too. They also know about
Hindi. They also, you know, people loved walking in that part.
I've spent some time there, visitedthat that part and I myself belonged to

(25:07):
the eastern part of the country. So as you're speaking, I mean I'm
again looking at the map of Indiaand again we generally here we don't think
of India as having an east coastand the west coast. Right the Danzon
is the same. Yeah. Yeah, from Brazilians, we just have an

(25:30):
east coast. Brazil is basically onthe Atlantic Ocean. So as we look
to Indian we see the map.You have extensive coastlines. You have a
very large west coast, in avery large east coast. Absolutely in Mumbai,
you have got the Arabian Sea.In Colcada, you have got the

(25:51):
Bay Open Goal, you know,so that is not very far away.
You've got the river Ugly. It'sa very old city and you know British
it is the city of Joy aspeople have called it in the past,
have written books on it, youknow, and many top writers, not
all those you know, doctors anda lot of intelligent people you know,

(26:15):
have been part of you They havecome from that part of the of our
country, especially called Kata regions aroundit. It is, you know,
it is, it is, youcan say, one of the big pillars
of our country. That's why wewhen we say Delhi, Mumbai called Kata
and jen Night you know. Earlierit was, so these are the top

(26:37):
four cities initially when the interms againmanage when you mentioned doctors and many doctors.
Is there a health center or apharma suruku center in India, there's
a concentration of the pharmasurico manufacturers.Yeah, there you have got you you
have got you know a lot ofthis cancer hospital is there? Back cancer

(27:00):
hospital is there? In terms ofTa Tata's I guess they have got one
Tata Memorial Hospital. They're also apartfrom Mumbai, Mumbai has got one the
best cancer hospital that they say.I guess if I if I remember they
have in m In Kolkata also theyhave built up one and they have got

(27:22):
Yeah. Pharmaceutical companies are their traditionalones, you know, old ones.
They are still very much operating fromthere. I would I know about few
of them, but I would notbe able to give exact ones. I
don't want to be wrong on thatfront, you know, but I do
know that it's it is a verybig hub. In fact, some of
the ointments that we still use astraditional ones yet they come from that part

(27:47):
of the world. You know, businesses in terms of businesses because they have
been impacted with change of business environmentin the state, but there are a
lot of companies still who are operatingout of those. I always say here
because of the extent of the country. Then again the extent of the different

(28:07):
types of either manufacture or health orresearch or the academic. There are opportunities
literally everywhere. And as we saidabout Brazil, there are opportunities everywhere.
But the more we can learn abouteach of the individual regions or places,
the better. And you just wantto get back to Pune. You had
mentioned Pune and that seems to bethe headquarters for the Badja Auto Yes,

(28:33):
that is coming here. Pune isan important manufacturing base for automotive. Yes,
yes it is. It is badThey have been there for a long
long time. And Puney is alsoa very historical city, very very historical
city. Earlier it was you know, yeah, these are the same names.

(28:56):
So if you visit punny in termsof there, but many many places
to visit in terms of you know, in terms of seeing the history of
that part of the world, becauseit has a strong uh it always had
a different difficult relationship with the withthe Mugles that they ruled in New Delhi

(29:17):
at that point in chime. Sothat tussle was there, say three d
four hundred years back, three hundredyears back, and that that that will
reflect in those places if you visitthat part of the world. So every
a lot of history you will findin that part of the world. In
Delhi it has a lot of youknow, Mughal rulers. But in that

(29:37):
part of the world it was youknow, he will get to hear that
name. So a lot of thatpart you know, that is there.
So it will also reflect in alot of business dealings will have with people
talking about Amara, a lot ofnames and here that will reflect in businesses.

(30:00):
In terms of other public areas,we'll find those names written. Okay,
so we've had an interesting tool revengethat yeah, we got we got
left. We are left with onemore place. We shut up at Nam,
the port city. It's in thesouthern state of our another for this

(30:22):
state, you know, and soit's a it's a part of this southern
part of the country that is theport city. We can share a lot
of businesses, lot of port workthat happens, you know, and business
culture there is friendly forthcoming. Andthen again, as I said, a
lot of there is alias believe infor building that comfort zone. It is

(30:45):
not that we cannot just go anddo that dealing. A lot of people
from India go outside, especially tothe US, and so do succeed there.
But if you talk in this partof the world that everybody wants actually
say human nature, you want tobe comfortable with the person you are during
and and and that leads to alot of better understanding, better business dealing,

(31:10):
even better rates for your for thethings that you want to buy,
you know or sell or sell becauseyou come to that comfort zone. So
that will lead to a good sortof a thing in which Putnam. Again,
Telugu is largely spoken. Hindi isalso Hindi, but English is also

(31:30):
very prevalent. So people, ifyou know English, you won't have any
problems in any part anywhere in thecountry. Though Hindi is very prevalent in
variabilities, but regional languages are very, very very strong. It is as
I said, it's all unity anddiversity India. And again I'm looking at

(31:51):
the map. How long would aflight tech from New Delay to the southern
part of India. It is Iguess two hours. I would not being
to be shut up, but numberbut it is not going to be more.
It is around two hours sorts maximumtwo two or fifteen minutes or something
like that in that in that zone. But I've been to Chennai all these

(32:13):
places to out something like that. The rest other flights, say Deli to
but one our thirty forty minutes,Deli to Mumbai one hour forty minutes,
this sort of thing, it isthere. They are not non NonStop flights
I'm talking about. So a goodplace to start is New Dali and then
just hot flights and go everywhere else. Yes, it depends. But if

(32:37):
your business is taking you directly toMumbai, then you can look at but
Delhi you must know, build strongrelationship with, meet a couple of you
know, know about Russie. Delhiis much more aware in terms of the
happening sympterms of qualities. If inMumbai people are educated, people know about

(33:00):
but in daily a person will bemore aware about the political changes that are
happening or are happening, and maybeglobally also there will be much more tuned
into things and all in say movemy, people will be more interested in
understanding more about say business, businessadministration. There are a lot of management

(33:22):
colleges there in Kolkata, there willbe more understanding about accountancies, chartered accountancy.
A lot of chartered accountants come fromthat part of them. But now
is sens working out there. Thereare certainly more than one opportunity, So
anywhere you start is the start ofan opportunity. Yes, indeed, indeed,

(33:44):
so this is in a nutshell, this is what a lot of There
are many many other cities, veryvery important centers, but these are the
major ones. You know, agood good example of some of the important
ones. Rest we can talk aswe keep on talking on this ject,
we will keep on talking on otherplaces as certainly very good. Thanks for

(34:06):
that information. I'm sure our listenerswill appreciate that. Right And Tom,
you want to uh, you know, in terms of the closing thing,
you want to talk about anything specific, anything in your somebody somebody summation of
this. Just to the point ofthat we mentioned of two countries being continental

(34:27):
and Brazil is the same and theiropportunities everywhere. I just want to reiterate
the the opportunity that Baja Otto hastaken to invest here in Brazil and their
investment is being made in the cityof Manaos and Manaos is in the northern
part of the country. It's actuallyin the middle of the Amazon jungle,

(34:50):
and Manaos has historically been a fromits creation. It was created as a
tax free zone really just as stimulusfor economic development in the northern part,
literally in the jungle. So it'sit's the right choice for manufacturers to install
a very good in terms of workingenvironment of skilled workers there in most places

(35:20):
where people would not think that wouldexist, but that they do. So
