Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Thriving Christian Artist the
podcast, where we hope youconnect with God to bust through
the roadblocks that have heldyou back for years, create the
work you love and really livethe life you know.
God created you to live as anartist in His kingdom.
I'm Matt Tommey, your host.
Let's get started.
Well, hey, my friend, welcometo the podcast.

(00:22):
I'm Matt Tommy, your host.
So glad that you are here.
Listen, I want to take sometime and share something with
you that's really core to who weare in the Created to Thrive
Artist Mentoring Program andreally everything that God's
called me to do in raising up anarmy of artists.
You know, back in 2009, I had adream 3.09 in the morning, two
mornings in a row.
In 2009, I had a dream 3.09 inthe morning, two mornings in a

(00:45):
row.
God woke me up in the middle ofthe night with a Jason Upton
song that said Raise up an army, raise up an army, raise up an
army, like Joel saw.
And I went down to my studiothe second morning and opened up
my Bible to Joel 3.9.
And it says you know, go to thenations, raise up an army,
gather the warriors and theweaklings.
And it's this huge, huge, dramatic image of an army being

(01:07):
raised up.
And you know, after you getsomething like that, you're like
, well, how in the world is thisgoing to happen?
And you know, over the years, since 2009, I've endeavored to
try to raise up this army ofartists in the best way that
I've known how.
But one of the things that Irealized from my own journey of
brokenness and struggle is thatmost of the things that really

(01:29):
make a difference in the livesof artists have really very
little to do with your art andmarketing and business and
everything to do with your heart.
See, in the kingdom, transformation doesn't happen
from the outside in.
It happens from the inside out,and most people are never
taught how to cooperate with theprocess of transformation that

(01:53):
God designed for them toactually see transformation
happening in their life.
We've been taught and modeledstriving.
You know working for the Lordand doing all these things for
God.
You know working for the Lordand doing all these things for
God.
We've been modeled the Americanor Western work ethic of just
pull yourself up by yourbootstraps and make it happen
and hope for the best.
We've been taught work hard, you know, no matter what the

(02:18):
cost and eventually it'll payoff.
But rarely, if ever, no matterif we love Jesus or not, whether
you're raised in the church ornot rarely are people taught how
transformation really happens.
Well, the Bible is really clearand I love teaching this
process because when youunderstand how transformation

(02:39):
happens and you understand theroadblocks to transformation,
you can really accelerate yourjourney with the Lord and
accelerate the results that yousee in your life.
I can remember walking for somany years as a creative that
struggled not externallynecessarily.
I was talented.

(03:00):
I knew how to perform.
I knew how to you know kind oftap dance for Jesus, if you will
, and get it done.
I knew how to play to mystrengths.
I knew how to perform.
I knew how to you know kind oftap dance for Jesus, if you will
, and get it done.
I knew how to play to mystrengths.
I knew how to do all this stuff.
But nobody ever told me how toget over the fear of
perfectionism and performancementality and striving on my own
, how to deal with the torturousthoughts that came with

(03:23):
comparison, with jealousy, withfeelings of inadequacy, with
procrastination andperfectionism and all the stuff
that we, as artists, deal with.
And listen, well-meaning peoplewho love Jesus.
Probably you and I know me havedealt with that stuff for years
, or probably dealing with itright now, and yet, because you
may not have a real handle onhow to deal with that, you just

(03:47):
push it down and hope it'll getbetter, or you try to pray it
away.
Oh God, please take this awayfrom me.
Well, let me say something thatmay be a little bit.
You know, maybe it'll offendyou.
I'm not trying to offend you,but there are some things in
your life that are not designedto be prayed away, in other

(04:08):
words, these I've found thattransformation in the kingdom
and breakthrough in the kingdomis not something that God does
to you, but it's something thatGod does with you as you learn
to cooperate with him, based onkingdom principles, and so I
want to give you, just reallyquickly today, what I call the
five core principles forthriving artists.

(04:30):
It's the core of what we youknow a lot of what we teach, at
least in the beginnings ofCreated to Thrive, and it's the
focus of what has been ourexperience course over the years
, which I've this yearcompletely rewritten and we're
launching it again in Januaryand calling it the foundations
course.
It's got all new exercises, allnew teaching, all new videos,

(04:56):
all new art projects.
We're super, super excitedabout it because this has been
probably one of the mosttransformational things that
we've ever seen artists gothrough in all the years that
we've been helping artists.
This year it's going to be anine week course that you go

(05:16):
through, which you get lifetimeaccess to get real
transformation and realacceleration in your life before
you ever think about adding tothat what it takes to be a
successful artist in themarketplace.
Because here's what I found youcan be as talented as you want
to.
You can be the best marketer, the best business person, or you

(05:40):
can be on the other side ofthat.
You can be like just startingout and you can be super
introverted and hate all thebusiness side of things.
You can be like just startingout and you can be super
introverted and hate all thebusiness side of things.
But listen, when you get freeinside your heart, when you
start to get confident and clearabout who God's created you to
be and you start walking in thepower of his spirit in your life
, my friend, listen, themarketing and the art stuff and

(06:00):
the business side of things ittakes root a lot quicker and it
produces fruit a lot faster, andI've seen that not only in my
own life, but I've seen that inthe lives of countless artists
over the years.
And so I want to give you thesefive principles, and really just
to give you a framework, but towhet your appetite to join us

(06:21):
inside of the Created to ThriveFoundations course, which starts
in January, and, of course, there's a link right here in the
in the show notes that you canclick on that and join us.
It starts January, the 14th2025.
But we want you to join us forthis, because there is no better
way for you to really startyour year off right than to lay

(06:43):
a solid foundation of thekingdom and of healing and of
clarity in your heart than withthis foundations course.
So what are the five coreprinciples?
Well, I'm going to read them toyou and then I'm going to go
back and share just a little bitabout each one.
Okay, the first one is connect, the second one is vision,
thirdly is thought, fourth isbelief and five is cultivate.

(07:08):
All right, connect.
What does that mean?
Well, core verse there John 15,.
Five through seven.
You know I'm divine, You're thebranches.
Apart from me, you can donothing.
Everything in the kingdom startswith intimacy with the father
and learning to hear his voice,to be led by his spirit.
And growth happens in your lifenot out of striving or just

(07:30):
having a good idea or trying todo something for God, but growth
happens as you connect with Godand then he leads you to
connect authentically withothers.
You know, not not only peoplethat you love in your life, but
also your prospects, yourclients, your partners.
Everything starts with thatconnection, but it starts with
the connection with the Lord, not just connection to a good

(07:53):
idea.
Everything in the kingdom hasto be birthed in intimacy.
We talk about in the course thebarriers to that, how the enemy
blocks us in that, and how toreally begin to cultivate
intimacy with the Lord in a waythat is authentic to you.
Secondly, I find that as youconnect with the Lord, he begins
to release vision to you.
Secondly, I find that as youconnect with the Lord, he begins

(08:13):
to release vision to you inline with your unique design for
your unique assignment.
If you've read my latest book, god's Plan for Living, you know
that I really believe in theframework that I developed there
God's ideal that as youridentity in Christ is
established, your design isuncovered and your unique
assignment is revealed.

(08:34):
Well, again, this is echoingthat same sort of sentiment that
, as you connect with God, hecan't help but give you vision
for who it is that you are andwhat it is that you're called to
do.
You know, the Bible says inProverbs 29, 18, without a
vision, people perish.

(08:54):
That word actually meanswithout prophetic revelation,
people cast off restraint.
And so vision from God for yourlife and for your art and,
potentially, you know, any sortof business that you would
pursue.
It gives you clarity and focusand boundaries and allows you to
really thrive in your designand assignment.
Not because you're talented,necessarily, but because you're

(09:17):
coming into agreement with whatGod's created you, for that is
so much more valuable and somuch more accelerative, if you
will, if that's even a word, than your talent, right?
Because when you begin to comeinto agreement with who God says
you are and what he can do,you're leaning into the grace

(09:38):
and the favor and the divineappointments and the
supernatural encounters that arecoming to bear on your journey,
and that is priceless.
Number three then, out of that, you start to realize that, hey,
even though I've got a visionand I'm connected to the Lord.
I realize that I've got to beconvinced that in my mind and in

(09:59):
my heart that these things aretrue.
Well, the third principle hereis thought Again.
Romans 2 says don't conform tothe pattern of this world, that
is, don't do life the wayeverybody else does it, but what
Be transformed by the renewingof your mind.
In other words, lastingtransformation happens not just

(10:19):
from trying harder, not fromwishing harder or just praying
that it would happen.
Lasting transformation in yourlife happens through allowing
the Holy Spirit to change theway you think about everything.
And when you cooperate with theHoly Spirit to transform your
thoughts, your life getstransformed as a result.
Why?
Because transformation in thekingdom happens from the inside

(10:42):
out.
Well, here's the deal yourthoughts are like seeds, and
when you plant seeds and you'rein the ground of your heart,
they begin to take fruit andthose thought seeds turn in to
beliefs.
You know the Bible, which isthe fourth principle in these
five core principles.
Most people say they believethat God's faithful, say they

(11:05):
believe that God's got a planfor them, say they believe this,
that or the other, but theactions of their life, the words
of their mouth.
The feelings of their heartreally tell a different story,
and it's only through connectionand vision and thought that
your beliefs begin to be shiftedinto agreement with who God

(11:27):
says you are and what he saysyou can do.
You know, but the Bible says inProverbs 27, three, as a man
thinks in his heart, that isthat you know, so is he that is.
You know the thoughts that thatyou dwell on, create the world,
that you live in, the worldthat you perceive, the world
that you see around you, and so,whatever you believe in your

(11:48):
heart about your life, your artand God, what's possible that
sets the boundaries for yourlife and what's possible for you
to achieve?
Again, you got a lot of peopleout there maybe you I know it
was me for a long time whobelieved Jesus or on their way
to heaven.
But they're looking at lifethrough a lens that's all based

(12:09):
on them, based on their fears, based on their history, based on
what mama, daddy, trauma woundshave said to them, and not
based on the truth of God's wordand man.
They start to realize, hey, Ineed to shift my beliefs through
the power of the Holy Spirit, through shifting my thoughts,
through connecting to visionthrough connecting with intimacy

(12:32):
with the Lord.
It's all connected there.
And so when you start to dothese things and that's what
this course is all about notjust, like you'd hear on a
Sunday morning, just do this andeverything would change.
No, we actually walk youthrough a process of that has
been proven over the years to toreally see transformation
happen in people's lives, sothat you don't just talk about

(12:55):
this stuff, you don't just hopethat it's going to happen, but
it actually starts to happenduring the course, which is
phenomenal.
And that's the last thing isreally cultivate, because this
journey is not just a kind of aone and done.
It is really an ongoingcultivation of the ground, of
your heart and of your mind, inorder to come into agreement and

(13:17):
stay in agreement with whoGod's called you to be and what
he's called you to do.
You know the Bible says inGenesis 1, 28, that we're to be
fruitful and multiply.
In other words, the life, yourlife and my life is the fruit of
the habits that we employ, andfaithfully stewarding what's in
our hand right now is the pathto growth and multiplication and

(13:42):
greater impact.
You know, in Matthew 25, theparable of the talents, it says
you know, you've been faithfulwith little.
Now I'm going to make you rulerover much.
So many of us were trained towant multiplication, to want
impact, to want to make adifference for God and do all
this stuff, and yet we werenever taught how to be faithful

(14:04):
and fruitful.
And that's what this process isall about Going back to basics,
laying a good foundation, asolid foundation in your heart,
so that the life that God wantsto birth through you, the fruit
that he wants to birth in youand through you, is built on a
foundation that will last.

(14:27):
My friend, if you are somebodyin your life who has wanted
you're an artist, you've wantedto be an artist your whole life.
You've been trying the bestthat you can, but you continue
to come up against theseinvisible barriers of thinking
well, if I just got better attime management, or if I just
quit comparing myself, or if ifI just, you know, weren't such a
perfectionist, or if I wasn'tlike this or that.

(14:50):
If you keep coming up againstthose invisible barriers over
and over and over and over again, my friend, I want to tell you
this is that's not about theinvisible barrier.
The invisible barrier is just asymptom of a deeper issue
that's going on in your heart.
And if you'll let the lord andlet me help you walk through a
process of identifying thoseroadblocks, letting the lord

(15:13):
heal those and replace thosewith the truth of his word and
give you a new set of habits andthoughts and beliefs to run on,
I promise you you will seequick, measurable results in
your life.
As an artist, I can't tell youthe countless stories that we've
heard over the years that whenpeople
