Why do we keep falling back into the same patterns despite our best efforts to change? The answer lies in what Josh Coats calls "the terror barrier" – a fascinating psychological mechanism that protects our deeply-held beliefs, even when those beliefs no longer serve us.

Most personal development approaches miss the mark completely. They focus on creating temporary emotional highs through motivation, affirmations, and visualization without addressing what's happening beneath the surface. As Josh explains, "It's like putting band-aids on broken bones and wondering why nothing ever gets fixed." These approaches might feel good in the moment, but they can't penetrate the protective wall our subconscious mind builds around our core beliefs.

True transformation requires making the unconscious conscious. Your brain doesn't distinguish between helpful and harmful beliefs – it simply fortifies whatever patterns have been repeatedly reinforced throughout your life. This explains why someone can intellectually agree with a new concept while consistently failing to implement it. Their subconscious is actively resisting the change. As Josh's favorite quote states: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate."

This understanding is crucial for anyone seeking genuine change, whether in business, leadership, or personal growth. You cannot change behavior without first changing beliefs. This principle explains why so many experience a "yo-yo" pattern with their habits, actions, and emotions – they're addressing symptoms rather than root causes. True coaching provides the tools to dig deeper, uncover limiting beliefs, and plant new ones that actually support your goals.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, my name is Josh and I'm your push coach.
I'm a failed rockstar turnedseven figure life coach.
I've trained over 40,000coaches and entrepreneurs since
I got started back in 2014.
I currently run my own lifecoach certification for those
who want to learn the powerfultools of transforming lives
using the psychology of truecoaching.

(00:20):
On this show, we're going toexplore business from a
different perspective.
I combine high energy withpsychology to teach you business
in a totally different way.
If you're tired of being toldto just show up and do the work,
or just believe more or justtrust the compound effect, this
podcast will take you on a deepdive to help you understand what

(00:43):
is actually holding you andyour clients back from doing the
work.
Once you understand thepsychology of performance, we
can build powerful messagingthat will attract the right
people who finally show up anddo the work.
If you're ready to be apowerful leader and build your
legacy, let's dive in.
Hello, what's up my friends?

(01:06):
My name is Josh.
I'm your push coach.
So excited to hang with you foranother episode of your push
coach.
So we just came off of a biglaunch for our membership.
Last week had close to 70people join the Legacy
Leadership University.
So freaking excited.
I actually taught Monday myformula on my A plus B plus C

(01:31):
equals new customers and rankadvancements formula.
Just really feel like nobody'steaching the full picture
anymore, right, like everyone isso niched down which, by the
way, is great for sales andmarketing you want to so niched
down which, by the way, is greatfor sales and marketing.
You want to be niched down.
That's one of the things that Italked about on Monday.
But here's the curse to thatwhen everyone needs to niche

(01:55):
down in order to sell theirproduct, it means that all of
the advice we are getting on theinternet is so niched down that
nobody is giving the fullpicture of what it actually
takes to build a business.
And so what I did on Monday wasreally taught like the full
step-by-step system to expandingyour reach, getting the

(02:19):
engagement and closing the sales.
Pretty much everyone out thereis going to teach on one of
those things, because, again, that's how they get paid, that's
how they make money is to teachyou one of those things.
So I kind of broke it down forthem this Monday.
One of my favorite teachings todo is that A plus B plus C
equals new customers.
But we are about just over 30days 30 days, friends for my

(02:45):
next round of our Life andPerformance Coach certification.
So we wrapped up round nine Idon't know, I guess that was
about a month ago now that wewrapped it up, had the in-person
graduation retreats andworkshops, had an absolute blast
.
But round 10 is kicking off thelast weekend of June.
I'm so, so, so pumped for this, and so today I kind of wanted to

(03:08):
teach you one of the reasonsthat life coaching is such a
powerful tool.
Because, oh guys, it is verytriggering to me, as someone who
really understands how thebrain works and really
understands what is actuallyhappening inside the brain, to
and really understands what isactually happening inside the
brain, to hear so much badteaching on personal growth.

(03:30):
And here's what I mean by this.
Most of the personal growthteaching out there is really
just what I would consider like, forgive me, there's a lot of
good people doing a lot of goodthings.
Okay, but there's a reallydifference between having good
intentions and actually teachingwhat it actually is.
Okay, you can have goodintentions and still say stupid

(03:53):
things.
There is so much.
The whole personal growthmovement is so much hype, so
much of just a big, freakingdance party that is awesome and
wonderful and amazing in themoment, but it is not long
lasting.
Now, just to be clear, I thinkit's important to mix in the

(04:14):
hype, to mix in the danceparties.
It's one of the reasons I drinkpre-workout before every call,
because I understand that inorder to hold your attention,
there needs to be an element ofentertainment to what I'm doing.
Right?
But if that's all we do, isjust entertained, then we don't
actually transform lives.

(04:34):
And so today I want to talk toyou about something called the
terror barrier.
Okay, you want to Google that?
Look it up.
It's called the terror barrierand it is a part of our brain.
Okay, so I love when I'mteaching this.
Obviously, most of you areseeing the are listening to an
audio only version of this.
Usually when I'm teaching thison calls, I would have a graphic

(04:56):
for this.
But basically I want you toimagine your brain is just like
a circle.
Okay, it's just a real simpleway.
It's not actually a circle, butimagine it as a circle and
imagine there's a line throughthe middle separating the bottom
from the top.
Okay, and on the top, we've gotthe subconscious mind.
On the bottom, we've got theconscious mind On the bottom,
we've got the conscious mind.
It doesn't really matter, it'snot actually where they're, it's

(05:18):
not an actual physical locationto this, but just imagine that
they're separated.
Okay, and what most people don'tunderstand is that the
subconscious mind is where thepermanent beliefs are stored.
Okay, by permanent I don't meaninfinite, I don't mean forever,
I just mean they are muchharder to change.
They are not going to changetoday or tomorrow.

(05:39):
They will only change with aprocess over time.
Then you have your consciousmind, and your conscious mind is
literally just the part of yourbrain that is getting signals
from the outside world.
Okay, so currently every singleperson listening to this is
consciously aware of somethingthat they are doing.

(06:00):
So, because my screen ismirroring what I'm doing right
now, if you happen to bewatching this on YouTube, you
see that my thumb is up on myleft hand.
Why is my thumb up?
I don't really know, but I'mconsciously aware of it right
now.
Unconsciously, I'm doing a lotof other things that I didn't
even notice and I'm going toactually stop and kind of force
myself to think about my body.
So my feet are down on theground right now.

(06:22):
I wasn't thinking about that.
They just went there.
My shoulders are pretty goodposture, josh, way to go.
I've got pretty good postureright now.
Only because of how long I'vebeen working on my posture with
my chiropractor that I'm nowgetting to the point where it's
kind of happening unconsciously.
But that actually brings up agreat example.
If you ever see someone withreally bad posture which I had

(06:45):
for many, many years and stilldo on certain days when I'm a
little more tired, my shoulderskind of naturally roll in.
I get that from my dad.
Okay, so no one is walkingaround consciously aware of
their bad posture.
Bad posture is something thatyou developed at a really young
age or maybe after an injury.

(07:06):
You know like, my wife had areally bad car wreck in her
early 20s.
Sometimes things like that canaffect ongoing posture, but it's
not like it's not like anyoneis sitting around going.
You know what I'm going to do.
I'm going to like roll myshoulders forward and walk
around with bad posture.
No one is consciously aware ofthat.
It's a subconscious thing, andso it's actually a really great

(07:30):
example of how our beliefs workin so many other things.
So, for instance, with ourbusiness, no one is consciously
going.
You know what I'm going to do.
I'm going to say somethingreally weird to this person and
ramble on for 32 paragraphs sothat this person thinks I'm a
freaking weirdo.
That just word vomited all overthem and never messages me back

(07:52):
.
That's not a conscious thing.
That's an unconscious thing.
It's you are unconsciouslyunsure of yourself, lacking
confidence and not sure what tosay, and there's different
responses to that.
One person might respond tothat by talking too much.
Another person might respond bynot talking at all.
So we have these unconsciousbeliefs, and what's really

(08:14):
important to understand is thatthese deep rooted beliefs are
then protected by the terrorbarrier.
Imagine if you were to build acastle in medieval days.
If you build a castle, the verynext thing you do is build a
big freaking wall around thecastle to keep the bad people
out and the good people in.
That is exactly what your braindoes with its belief system.

(08:37):
It builds a wall around thosebeliefs to keep the bad people
out, the good people in.
The only problem is your braindoesn't actually know which
thoughts or beliefs are good orbad.
It only holds on to the onesthat happen so repetitively,

(08:57):
over and over and over and over, that it assumes those are the
ones you want to keep.
Now, what really sucks aboutthis is we're all raised by
parents who sometimes beat intoour brains these thoughts over
and over, and over and over, andit's not that we chose to hear
them over and over.
We were put into an environmentwhere that's just what happened
, and when we get somethingthat's repeated over and over

(09:20):
and over and over, it getsburied so deep in there that it
then gets this fortified wallthat's trying to protect it.
Now, for those of you that wakeup every day, look in the mirror
and say, oh my God, I'm a rockstar, I'm amazing, I'm awesome.
All you're doing is shootingarrows at a big, freaking brick

(09:40):
wall and they're bouncing rightoff, and while it might affect
the way you feel about yourselfin the moment, it's not any type
of long-term change.
It's not what I would considera transformation.
It's just simply like puttingmakeup on your face and, by the
way, nothing wrong with puttingmakeup on your face, but we all

(10:02):
know that when you wash yourface, that goes away.
It was a form of a cover, right, and so what?
We're doing so much with ourpersonal growth, with the
ongoing dance parties and thehype and all of this.
Now, just to be clear again ifyou enjoy that and it's just fun
for you, that's fine.
There's nothing bad about it.
There's nothing wrong about it.

(10:22):
I'm not in any way trying toconvince people to stop the
positivity stuff.
I just need you to understandthat's not what actually
transforms and changes you forthe long term.
The only thing that transformsyou for the long term is using
true coaching to dig deeper inand find out what is actually

(10:48):
there, so that we can dig it upand then put new beliefs in.
As my favorite quote in theworld says until you make the
unconscious conscious, it willrule your life and you will call
it fate.
Until you make the unconsciousconscious, it will rule your
life and you will call it fate.

(11:11):
So the point of true coachingis to actually transform the
beliefs, to find the ones thatare deep rooted, uproot them and
then plant the seeds that wewant to have there.
And what most people are doingis just trying to beat new
beliefs into their brain becausethey don't understand how it

(11:33):
works, and so what you're reallydoing is essentially hitting
your head on a brick wall overand over and over and over and
then wondering why nothing isgetting fixed.
Or, as I like to say, it's likeputting band-aids on broken
bones and wondering why nothingever gets fixed.
The only way to truly changeyour belief system which, by the

(11:56):
way, your beliefs drive yourbehaviors so the only way to
truly change your habits, youractions, your discipline, all of
these things that, oh, you gotto be more disciplined, you got
to have better habits Cool, that's great, but how do you do
that?
You only do that by changingyour beliefs, and the most

(12:18):
powerful way to do that isthrough true coaching.
And that, my friends, is whyI'm so passionate about my
certification, not because Ithink everybody in the world
needs a piece of paper that saysthey're certified, but because
I think every person in theworld needs to learn the tools
that it takes to truly changeyour beliefs, as well as help

(12:38):
other people to do the same.
Because if you're trying tobuild a business, it is going to
take a change in behavior, butyou cannot change behavior
without first changing beliefs.
If you're trying to mentor ateam or even help your customers
to adopt new habits, you cannotchange their behavior without
changing their beliefs.

(12:59):
And even if it looks like youhave some behavior changes
almost all the time they'retemporary.
Come home from a big eventyou're like, oh my God, I'm a
rock star, I'm gonna do this, and three weeks later you're
still the same person.
And so many people are likesuch a yo-yo, like their habits
and their action and theiremotions just a big roller

(13:21):
coaster, and that's because theyhaven't actually addressed the
deep rooted beliefs that areholding them back.
So if you are interested inlearning more about our program,
I'd love for you to go tojoshcoatscom.
There's a spot on the page thatyou can click on to join the
wait list for our next round andwhen you do that you'll get a
call with myself and we just hopon a Zoom call and just chat

(13:44):
about it.
I am a very, very, very zeropressure sales person.
I'm very, very true to my lifecoaching skills when it comes to
sales, because if you pushpeople, guess what?
I know enough about the brainto know how it works.
If you push someone, they gointo fight or flight mode, and I

(14:06):
don't really like trying tosell to people that are trying
to punch me in the face or runaway.
So what I'm going to do is askyou some questions about your
own beliefs about what you'regoing through, give you some
details about the program andthen give you a chance to just
think about it and decide ifit's right for you and if that
is too intimidating for you.
Guess what?
I'm going to be hosting somefree workshops over the next 30

bonuses, so I'd love for you toat least just find out more
about it.
See what it's all about.
Life coaching really is what Icall the universal leadership
tool.
It's not about whether or notyou want to call yourself a life

(15:14):
coach, like I do, and I mean tobe honest.
I don't even really call myselfa life coach.
I call myself the push coach.
It's not about whether or notyou want to make a career change
Okay, even though it gives youthe ability to do that if you
want to.
Most of the people that do ourcertification are doing it
simply to learn the skills forthemselves, for the people that
