Twenty two minutes after five o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Moegor. We
on this show for a couple ofyears now have benefited immensely from the expertise
offered by the specialists and experts atOrtho Cincy. They've got specialists all over
the Tri State walk in orthopedic urgentcare during the week nine a m To
(00:21):
nine pm, Saturday's nine am toone pm, and at Edward Edgewood and
Anderson at Anderson's where I took mydaughter for her broken foot. You can
learn more at orthosinc dot com. That's Ortho ci Ncy dot com. Answering
our call today is our friend, doctor Jonathan Slaughter, who is our go
to guy in the immediate aftermath ofJoe Burrow's wrist injury last year that he
(00:47):
suffered against the Baltimore Ravens. Andwe're dealing with something that I don't know,
maybe it's maybe it's similar. Idon't know, doctor Slaughter. It's
it's good to have you. Iappreciate the time. How are you good?
Thanks? Mo, I'm glad Icould come on for it. I'm
glad you could do this. Sowe're working through a lot here. Christian
and Karnassi on strand. He getshit by a pitch April twenty seventh,
so about a week and a halfago. They do x rays. The
(01:11):
x rays are negative. We're toldthat they have discovered a new fracture that
Christian was not really aware of.He misses some games, they don't put
him on the injured list. Hecomes back and he plays four games,
and then today we find out anew fracture is discovered, an owner styloid
fracture, which I've never heard of, and now he's going to miss four
to six weeks. There's a lotto work through here. Let's start with
(01:34):
the injury. What is an owner'sstyloid fracture? Absolutely so, the honor
stiloid is a little piece of bone. So it's one of the long bones
of your form. If you feelyour elbow in that point at your elbow,
that is your olna. If youtrace that all the way down,
it comes to the small finger sideof your hand, and you feel this
bump that's on our head and there'sa small little protusion off that called the
(01:57):
owner styloid. That's where different ligamentsattached to help with ristability. As well
as a piece of cartilage called yourtriangular fibro cartilage complex, which is like
the meniscus of the wrist. Soan ulnar stylid fracture is usually a fracture
somewhere through that little small protrusion ofbone, whether it's just a small little
evulsion pulls a fleck a bone offthe end, or it could be all
(02:20):
the way down at the base ofthat, but it's that small protrusion of
bone that is fractured. All right, walk me through why something like this
is now just now being discovered andmaybe didn't appear on the scans and next
rays a week and a half ago. Yeah, So a lot of times
fractures, especially if it's a bluntforce trauma, can create a bone contusion,
(02:43):
which is almost the start of afracture if you continue to stress it.
And sometimes you can even have acrack in the bone through the contusion
that you can't initially see, especiallywith blunt force trauma, because most ulnar
styloid fractures you see is after afall and it's associated with the other long
bone, the radius fracture also,so here he probably had a blunt force
(03:07):
contusion where or like a bruise ofthe bone that could have had a small
crack that doesn't initially show on Xray. He probably had some tenderness there,
and so if I was seeing him, I see the X rays no
obvious fracture or a little pain there. Likely a bone bruise, especially given
the mechanism. Let's rest this andmobilize it for a couple days, ice
(03:27):
it, see how you do.If you're getting better, then let's start
swinging. See how you play. Then he started swinging, he probably continued
to have discomfort, but being anathlete who's a good athlete that wants to
help his team and also wants toplay because he doesn't want to lose the
spot, continues to play. Nowhe's having lingering pain. They check out
again and either the force of himconstantly swinging, potentially even rolling over a
(03:52):
ball caused a small little contusion orcrack to fully displaced that means to move
position and become apparent on X ray. We've been talking a lot about risk
injuries. You and I talked aboutJoe Burrow about six months ago. TJ.
Friedel suffered a risk injury. Howdoes something like this particular injury compared
(04:15):
to other risk fractures, torn ligamentsand things of that nature. So this
one that would act more like arisk sprain. Yeah, the bone is
there's at least a crack. Idon't know if it's displaced or not,
but it can be seen now inimaging. But it acts more like a
sprain because it's where the ligaments thathelp with stability of the risk. However,
it's nowhere in the category of JoeBurrow. Joe Burrow could be a
(04:38):
more devastating type injury, but he'sshowing good recovery promise. So this one
is going to be more like arisk sprain that you really just need to
get the ligaments to settle down, calm down, and heal. So we're
not talking about something where surgery isa likely option. It's very rare,
so we do occasionally operate on ownerstyloids. It depends on where in the
(04:59):
owner stilo at the base where itcomes into the owner head. It's more
prone to potentially need surgery, buteven a lot of those as long as
the risk is stable, and whatwe really are testing there for stability is
between the two long bones to ownon the radius. If he has stability
there it's very rare operate on these, all right, So the timeline being
(05:19):
talked about here is is four tosix weeks. That's pretty open. That
died and nobody is saying that he'sgoing to have to miss the rest of
the season or anything like that.Does that timeline sort of jibe with what
you've come to understand about this sortof injury? Yes, so a lot
of times when I see something likethis, and again, an isolated owner
(05:40):
stili fracture is rare, But whenyou see something like this, it is
just a mobilized rest. Let theligaments calm down, try to get the
bone to heal. You're looking atfour to six weeks. He's already a
little over a weekend, so fourweeks from now would put him almost five
and a half weeks out. Itcould be very reasonable. In four weeks
he could start swinging the bat again, but if he continues to have pain
and soreness, it could be morethan six to seven or eight weeks.
(06:04):
Was there extra risk incurred by havinghim play these last four games? I
mean, if you look at it, yeah, he had soreness, he
had it. There could have beena cult fracture. So yes, you
can always cause a further injury, but I think it was low risk just
based on everything I've read so far. With the negative X race. Obviously
(06:27):
he is able to swing the bat. We can argue on it if it
was effective or not. But hewas able to swing the bat with minimal
discomfort, So I don't think therisk of him continuing to play was inappropriate
at all. It's something I wouldeven have my college or high school athletes
do if they were having minimal pain. What what sort of sporting event are
you at right now here? Kidsin the background, Yeah, I'm at
(06:49):
my ten year old son's baseball game. They're at leasting it and warming up.
All right. I'm I'm one ofthe assistant coaches. And I told
him, just giving me a fewminutes, we will That's far more important
than talk to me. Get backto that. I really do appreciate your
time on short notice. We willchat soon. Thank you so much.
Absolutely, you can always call memom. Most definitely, Doctor Jonathan Slaughter
(07:10):
Orthos Sincy. We say this everysingle week. The awesome thing about the
people at Ortho Sincy is they've gotspecialists on locations all over the tri State.
You never need an appointment. Theyhave walked in orthopedic urgent care weekdays
nine a to nine p and Saturdaysnine e to one p in Edgewood and
(07:30):
Anderson. It's easier and cheaper thangoing to an er whenever you have an
urgent orthopedic injury. And I couldspeak from experience because my daughter broke her
foot at recess and within just acouple of hours we were walking out of
Orthos Sincy and she was on herway back. Go to Orthosinc dot com.
