Hello there, and welcome to another
episode of Crunches and Cosmos, the
only podcast exclusively for home exercisers.
I'm Mickey, one of the founders of one strong
Southern Girl and the host of this podcast.
Today I'll be talking about obey fitness.
We actually reviewed this service several years ago, but
like many of the top online workout libraries, things
(00:23):
at obey are constantly changing and there have been
some big changes made in this workout library that
you're going to want to know about.
So stick around.
I'll go over all the features with you,
including the ones they've retired, and some of
our favorite new features that make this on
demand workout library membership stand out.
So by the end of this episode, you'll know
(00:45):
who this is for what it costs how to
sign up all the things so let's get started.
Start and scale your home workout plan using
the best resources on the market, with one
strong southern girl at your side.
Welcome to the Crunches and Cosmos podcast.

You'll find the links to all of
that and more in today's show notes.
So let's get to today's episode.
So just a little housekeeping before we dive into all of
(01:49):
the details is that we recommend that you sign up for
any on demand workout service or check out and review workout
libraries using a desktop computer or your laptop, a big screen
just so that you do not miss any of the cool
features or how a membership works.
You're gonna be able to take in all
(02:09):
of those details so much better at your
computer than you will on your mobile device.
It's just really, really easy to get sucked in
and sign up for something on your phone and
then kind of miss all the details that matter.
And so we are going to be pointing out
those details today, so I'm really glad you're here.
However, it's just a good idea as a habit when you
(02:30):
sign up for any service, run over to your computer wait
till you get home and you can sit down at a
computer and really take in all of the details that you
really need to know about before you sign up for something.
And the second thing is, I highly recommend that
you watch our review of obey on YouTube.
There will be a link in the show notes, but
I in that review, it shows you exactly how to
(02:52):
find and use all the features that I'm going to
be telling you about that are part of this membership.
So seeing it is really, really helpful.
It's a short video, but it really does a great
job of walking you through all these features I'm talking
about so you can kind of envision how they might
work for you, which is what it's all about.
This is all about you and finding what's going
to make you excited, motivated and be the most
(03:14):
practical membership that fits in with your life so
that you can hit your fitness goals.
And so in that video, we also show
you behind the scenes of the mobile app.
We pop up our membership on the screen
and walk you through all the features there.
So again, tell you exactly how to use it.
So another thing is this workout library.
(03:34):
Their trial period is quite short.
It's only seven days.
So you're really going to want to know how to
use the features so that you can really make the
most, really milk your trial period to find out if
it's gonna be something that works for you before you
sign up and give your credit card information over.
And the best way to do that is to know in advance
(03:55):
where the features are and how they work so that when you
get started and when you sign up, you're ready to go.
So that is our housekeeping.
Let's dive into this membership.
So what sets this workout library
apart from others on the market?
So the obey fitness on demand workout library has several
things that set it apart and some things that used
(04:16):
to set it apart that they've changed, which was why
I thought it would be a good idea to go
ahead and review this one again and revisit it.
The first thing that makes them special
is they have a very robust library.
There are a few workout libraries on the
market, memberships, on demand memberships that you can
sign up for that have massive libraries.
We all know about those beachbody
(04:36):
on demand body Mosa les Mills.
There's several ELo moves that
have very, very massive libraries.
And those are good things, right? To some people.
Some people, not so much.
It just depends on you and your preferences.
Some people feel overwhelmed with
too many class choices.
But this is one library that has
(04:58):
over 10,000 classes inside of it.
But they do a great job of filtering or I giving
you filters so that you can narrow down at a really
granular level your options and find a class you're looking for.
And so there's no reason to
feel overwhelmed by all the choices.
They have tons of class styles, every class
(05:21):
style that you could possibly be looking for,
they have it inside this workout library, but
the filters make it very user friendly.
They have a lot of features that we're
going to dive into in just a second
that are different than other workout libraries.
And it does make them.
They are, while they are user friendly, they're not
the most user friendly interface on the market just
(05:45):
because they do have a lot of features.
But again, I mentioned that YouTube video.
If you head over to the YouTube video and check
it out, you'll quickly see that these features are worth
all of the bells and whistles and the extra, you
know, figuring out to be able to use them and
have them in your membership because they've got some really
cool things that they've added.
(06:06):
Also their workout style.
Most of the classes are one on one, so
it's you and the instructor versus something like Les
Mills, which is focused on group fitness.
So every Les Mills class is a group of
trainers or instructors guiding you through the workout.
Here it's almost always one instructor leading the
(06:27):
class, just a one on one style.
Also, they have this new
thing called curated recommendations.
So I'll talk a little bit about that.
That's something that's, that's new.
I'll tell you how they come up with
those recommendations and where you can find them.
I've already mentioned they have
tons of workout styles.
So that means that they have
HIIT training, strength training, bar workouts,
(06:48):
step workouts, flexibility workouts, dance workouts.
So they have just about every kind of workout
style, style that you could think of inside this
library and the calendar and they have a calendar
and stack, something called stacking, which are mobile features
that I'm going to talk about, which are really
unique to their membership that are pretty exciting features
(07:12):
that I'm kind of obsessed with one of them.
This stacking feature is pretty cool, so I'll tell you
where it lives and how to find it and why
you're going to want to use it and why it
may inspire you to sign up for this membership just
to get your hands on that feature.
So workout styles, what will you find in this library?
I've already told you that you can find
pretty much any workout style that you're looking
(07:34):
for inside of the OBE workout library.
Now, remember, one thing that I will say is
these workout libraries that have a little bit of
everything means that they aren't and prose at anything.
So if you just love one style of exercise,
I do encourage you to find a workout library
(07:57):
that specializes in that style of workout.
If that's what really motivates you and excites you,
that specific style of movement, then try to find
a library that really where all of the instructors
are trained in that workout style and just really
focus in on that style.
It's worth it.
Or sign up for more than one membership library.
(08:17):
I really like belonging to Tracy Anderson.
I don't belong to her workout library all the
time because it's so expensive, but she has a
very unique style of movement that is really fun
and different and kind of that blend of yoga,
pilates bar that I find very refreshing and interesting.
And she does it very well, and
you can't find it anywhere else.
(08:38):
And so I really like belonging to one or
two, like belonging to hers at the same time
as Cathy Friedrich, who really specializes in advanced total
body conditioning, like athletic conditioning routines.
So it's just a, you know, you just kind of
have to test them all out and find that sweet
spot for what motivates and excites you to move.
(09:00):
But I will say these, getting back to these
robust libraries that have lots of different styles of
movement, it doesn't mean that these instructors aren't very
good at every style that they're teaching.
It's just keep in mind that there are some libraries
that might do one style of movement very, very well.
And so they have bar bounce, boxing,
(09:20):
dance, meditation, hit spin classes, yoga classes.
They have all of these types of classes in here.
But if yoga is what you love, then find
a workout library that really specializes in yoga.
If you love bounce classes, test
them out here, of course.
But the nest digital Lek lekkifit.
(09:43):
I don't know how to say it.
Lek fit also body by Simone those libraries specialize in
bounce workouts, so they do them very, very well.
They're pros at that one style.
So keep that in mind if you find a
way of movement that just really excites you.
But one way to find a way of movement that
really excites you is to sign up for a program
(10:03):
like obey or I membership like Obey, where you get
to test out lots of different styles of movement.
And so they have everything you could possibly want
as far as movement styles in their library.
Class links, they have everything from
five minutes to an hour.
And again, these filters that they have make
it very, very user friendly so that you
(10:24):
can really narrow down what you're looking for
and they make that very easy for you.
Now, I do want to say something
about the instructors in the obey library.
The instructors are one of the ways
that this membership stands out for me.
I love the instructors.
They're just really fun.
And the way they interact with the
camera, it just makes it very entertaining.
(10:47):
And so that's one way that they do stand out.
They've done a great job of this environment of making
workouts fun because it's just the instructors are relaxed and
comfortable in front of the camera and engage with you
as you're doing the class the equipment needs.
Let's talk about that.
They have, if you have some home fitness equipment, you
(11:08):
can find a workout in this library to use it.
They have step bar loops, all kinds of
dumbbells, different weights, yoga, and they also have
a large number of no equipment classes.
And so if you don't have any equipment yet, you
haven't invested any in any home fitness equipment, then you
(11:31):
can find a ton of classes to just test out
this library and do before you invest.
As far as choreography goes, you're
not going to find the dance.
I haven't done any dance workouts, but the other
style of classes are all very simple, basic choreography.
Nothing that's going to trip you up or frustrate you in
(11:53):
any way that you would need to have some kind of
advanced choreography or be able to dance really well or have
great coordination to be able to do the classes.
So that's always something that's
important for most people.
Space requirements, again, nothing extra beyond
what you would normally need.
Any kind of dedicated space you have for
home fitness right now will work to do
(12:14):
most of the classes in this library.
So something I need to point out that they,
one of the features that they have dropped, which
was a real surprise for me, and what inspired
me to actually do this new recording on their
library, is that they stopped doing live workouts.
This is huge for them, a huge change.
I don't know when it happened, if it was done
(12:35):
quietly or a mass like announcement, but they were actually
streaming tons of classes throughout the day at one point
so you could log in and do a live workout.
You had several opportunities during the day
to join in a live class.
So I'm guessing either it just wasn't successful or
(12:56):
the logistics of doing that for a long period
of time didn't pay off for them?
Maybe, I'm not sure.
But if you prefer the energy of a
live class and interacting with a live instructor,
you're not going to find that here anymore.
But you've got so much to choose from.
I don't think it matters.
Unless that's just a game changer for you and
(13:17):
you just love tuning into live streaming classes, then
go to daily burn or you, you know, beachbody
on demand body used to do that too.
And I just got an email from Carl Dikeler that
they are no longer going to do live classes either.
So I think that live streaming was something that
came up during COVID and got really popular.
But it's proving to be difficult to maintain and
(13:39):
maybe is not getting the participation that makes the
payoff, makes it worth the work to maintain it,
you know, because to handle the bandwidth of a
live class for everybody, there's probably tons.
Can you imagine the amount of technical
difficulties that probably crop up when they're
trying to live stream classes?
(14:01):
I mean, I can't even imagine.
So this is one of the services that I
noticed dropped their live streaming feature, shockingly enough, and
that was what set them apart at one point.
So I was very surprised to see that.
But again, I don't think it's any reason to
avoid this membership just because it's not there anymore.
They also adjusted their prices down, and I'm sure
(14:22):
it's because of that feature that they changed.
So when they removed that feature, I don't know if
it happened at the same time, but I noticed that
their monthly cost is lower now as well.
So maybe they made up for it with a price adjustment.
I'm not sure I'll get to the pricing in just
a second, but I did want to point out that
they have made a change in their live streaming service.
(14:44):
So obey does have workout calendars you can follow
that are under the one section of your membership.
But I did want to talk about their personalized fitness
curations that they have for you on their website.
Now they're pushing this idea of
personalized, progressive at home workout plan.
So how they come up with that is when you sign
(15:05):
up for your membership, they tailor a fitness plan for you
and give you recommendations for classes based on your answers to
a short quiz that you take at signup.
And you can't skip the quiz, but it's short.
It's become so popular to do these quizzes when
you sign up for stuff so that you can
quote get customized recommendations for things, but it's questions
(15:31):
about your workout preferences habits and your fitness goals.
It's very simple, nothing invasive.
Or I just answer it authentically and
genuinely and they'll identify you as a
specific type of exerciser, like categorize you.
You can see me take the quiz if
you want to on that YouTube video.
You'll see the types of questions that are asked and how
then they make this like call you out as this type
(15:54):
of exerciser and then they curate these workouts for you.
But what the curation is really is just some
AI probably recommendations for classes, which is fine because
honestly, if you're someone who's gonna feel overwhelmed with
10,000 class options and a new workout library and
not knowing where to start, hey, that's a great
way to get started, is to just follow what
(16:15):
they've recommended for you and they put it right
on your dashboard where you can easily see it.
And it just makes it an easy
way to get started, in my opinion.
So it is kind of fun.
So don't skip that, but be prepared
to see it when you sign up.
The other thing that they have that's
new are personalized personal training option.
That has never been a thing for them, but
(16:37):
now you can during sign up you're going to
see this upsell option for personal training.
It costs more money.
It does have a it's like it has its own free trial.
I think it has a 14 day free trial period.
The regular on demand library is
a seven day free trial period.
The personal training option is completely a new thing.
(16:59):
I have not reviewed that, so I don't really
have much to offer as far as that goes.
But that is something that they will try to
upsell you during your signup of the membership.
I would totally skip that personally and just go straight
for the on demand classes and test them out and
test out the instructors and see how it goes.
You can go back and get that
upsell at any point during your membership.
(17:21):
So let's talk about some of the cool features.
First of all, if you do want a workout
calendar of sorts, you can go in your membership
under programs and they have like these themed workout
calendars and in the thumbnail you can see all
the information that you need to choose one, but
give that some thought and kind of review it.
I always recommend when you sign up for these libraries that
(17:42):
you do it like kind of on a when you have
a small trial period, especially like this one, for seven days,
make sure you sign up on your on day one when
you have a lot of time to dedicate to just pushing
buttons, not even doing any workouts, but clicking on every single
button in the mobile app, especially the mobile application, or maybe
the Roku app, if that's what you're going to be using,
(18:05):
because that's, that's where you're going to want to see how
user friendly it is and what's out there, so that when
it comes time to do a workout, you'll know exactly where
to go and how to, you know, where to find that
class you're looking for.
Or you can set up, you know, a
calendar of classes you're going to test or
download them, like this membership library.
Most membership libraries now have a way
(18:27):
to download them to your mobile device.
So you could pick some classes, download them so that
they're queued up and ready to go, but you want
to, to play with the interface so that you can
find the features that are most important to you.
You know which filters are present, you know, you know
exactly what class styles are there, what instructors you might
want to test out, what equipment you might need, may
or may not need all of those things.
(18:49):
You're going to want to look at it.
So give yourself 30 minutes to an hour to just
play around and push all the buttons and find all
the features where they're at so that when it comes
time to play a workout, there's no frustration for you.
You just hit play and you get going.
So some of my favorite features, I told you about
the programs for workout calendars, but they have two really
cool features in the mobile app and on desktop.
(19:10):
And I show you again in that YouTube video.
I keep pointing it out, but that's why we
make these videos, because it makes it that much
easier when you get started with your membership to
just dive in and be ready.
You're already a pro, you're an expert.
You know where everything's at.
You've already navigated everything.
I've shown you where it's all at.
And so that's why I'm pointing
it out, because it's helpful.
(19:32):
The features that I want to point out to
you is, number one, this calendar they have.
So in the workout class itself, when you go inside
of there, or if you're just on the thumbnails and
looking at them, you can hit the calendar and it
will actually add a workout to your personal calendar.
And so you can schedule that way.
And this other feature they have is called stacks.
(19:53):
So you can add workouts to a stack.
And this is only a mobile feature.
You can't do it on your desktop, but you
can flag some workouts without even opening the classes.
It looks like you can scroll on your
phone, scroll through some classes, and as you
see classes, you love that look cool.
You can add them to a stack right there in
(20:13):
the thumbnail and then you can go and look at
your stack and all it is, is a mashup of
classes that they line up for you back to back.
And so you could actually create a stack,
stack of ten minute workouts that kind of
hit every element you're looking for.
And by, by that, I mean you could, you could
do a five minute warm up or stretch, and then
you could do upper body toning, lower body toning, a
(20:35):
HIIT workout and then a cool down.
And you could just like mash
them all up into one stack.
And you would have like your total body workout for
the day if you didn't, couldn't find one that you
wanted to do that was, you know, if you don't
want to do a 45 minutes HiIT class and you
want to hit everything or do, but you can make
your own customized what they're calling stack, which is what
(21:00):
we call here at one strong southern girl, we came
up with something called program stacking years ago, multiple years
ago, I actually wrote an entire article on that technique
that we called program stacking.
But it was where we stack classes from different
libraries together to do them back to back.
Now, this is stacking workouts within one library.
(21:23):
And they make it super simple, right?
They're using technology to allow you to just do with
the same concept in mind to create your own stack
of classes that just really make you have this beautiful
medley of a workout that you're looking for.
So I love, I'm completely obsessed with that feature.
I think it's so super smart and
(21:45):
I love that they do that.
So let's talk about the cost
of a membership to this library.
The cost right now is $14.17 a month
if you sign up for an annual membership.
So that means if you sign up for the whole year, it
averages out to 1417 a month, which I think is 169 total.
(22:07):
And if you are billed monthly, it's 24 99 a month.
So you do get some savings if you sign up for the year.
However, we always recommend here that you sign
up for a monthly membership until you know
that you're going to use it.
It's just the smart way to do it.
And because signing up for a year is not any
(22:28):
kind of savings if you don't actually use it.
You haven't saved anything.
If you only use it for a month.
So I highly recommend that you just sign up for the
one month and then you go into your your settings and
you up upgrade to a year if you see that you're
using it and you're loving the library and the features excite
you and motivate you to exercise and we show you how
(22:49):
to do that in the settings.
We also show you how to cancel your membership in
that YouTube video and we show you what it looks
like if you want to upsell to that personal training
experience as well, where you'll find that and how you
can do it in your membership.
And I haven't mentioned it already, but I typically
like to point out who a workout library is
(23:10):
ideal for as far as fitness level.
So beginner to advanced I will say that I feel like
this fitness library is good for any level of exerciser.
They do have a lot of beginner classes.
However, even if you're a beginner brand new to
exercising, don't limit yourself to just the beginner classes.
Definitely test out every class style regardless
(23:33):
of where it's categorized as far as
fitness level goes, and just modify it.
That's how you're going to stay excited to move.
If you're limiting yourself to only
the beginning classes, you're going to
be incredibly limited in your options.
And so it's it makes a lot more sense to
modify an advanced class than to only do beginning classes
forever and miss out on some really fun class styles.
(23:56):
So that is everything about obey
fitness and their latest updates.
We'll link out to the faqs and a signup page.
We are not affiliates of this program at all,
but we'll link out to their website so you
can sign up if you want to.
Definitely link out to our YouTube video and all
of the things we've mentioned, any kind of links
or resources that I have mentioned in this video.
You'll find links to it in the show notes for this
(24:19):
episode, so don't forget to check out the show notes.
Like I said, to find any links I mention
and to visit one strong southern girl for tons
of free resources for home exercisers thank you for
your support of one strong southern girl.
If you know someone who exercises at home and might
find our information helpful, please send them our way.
So for all the other home exercisers
(24:40):
out there, stay safe and stay strong.
Thank you for listening.
This is Mickey from one strong southern girl.
Thank you for being here today.
And remember, girls, life is complicated.
Fitness doesn't have to be.
You're a warrior.
Believe it.
This is Mickey.
I will see you next time. Bye.
