TODAY'S DEVOTION:
Attitude is everything. If you want to be strengthened and built up, if you long to see God's people grow and flourish, then the attitude of your heart is so important. Paul tells us, if you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you too. “So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.” What is this attitude? It’s the very attitude of Christ himself.
Paul writes in Philippians, “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges. He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.” This is the attitude that is everything: doing all things with a heart to honor God and serve others, laying down our privileges in love, and seeking harmony with our brothers and sisters.
This kind of attitude is self-giving. It is radically forgiving. It is a love that suffers alongside others and on their behalf. It is the very love that God has revealed to us in Christ. To be awakened by this love – to be discipled in the way of this love – will enable us to have that same loving attitude. It will free us to honor God, serve others, and to know the joy of the Lord.
And we’re not left to do this on our own. The Spirit of
