In the 1980s, Lynn Goldsmith took a photo of Prince, it was licensed to Vanity Fair Magazine for a story. Vanity Fair had Andy Warhol turn it into one of his iconic paintings – and then he turned it into 16 Iconic versions of Prince. When Prince died, it was published again and Goldsmith sued for copyright infringement. It has made its way to the United States Supreme Court where the Fair Use and Transformative nature Doctrines will be on the chopping block. This case has implications that can reverberate through the creative community even outside the art world. From filmmaking to content creating, this case is being watched very closely.
