(00:00):
In this episode, learn about some newapple varieties that were made by crossing
(00:05):
some apple variety with the honey crisp.
The honey.
Chris has a lot of childrennow here, and we're going to
talk about some of those today.
(00:39):
before we begin today's episode.
I want to take a moment to shareabout my favorite spice company.

So I just boiled themuntil they were cooked.
Nothing fancy.
(01:00):
Then I add some buttereat sprinkled on bro.
And barrels purple shallot powder.
And suddenly I have thoughtthat was really amazing from
something I was just trying to usequickly to keep from wasting it.
They offer the most unique andfreshest spices you're going to find.
Like the wild mountain cuminPiedmont smoked paprika.

Now onto today's episode.
(01:44):
Did you know that thereare like, 5 billion.
Honey criss crossed apples now.
I mean, we have 5 billion, but there is a lot.
A lot of these new varietieswe are finding on the market
and the grocery stores.
Our honey, Chris crosswith some other apple.
I mean, there are so many of them now.
(02:05):
Um, Because people love Honeycrisp.
They love.
The crisp texture of it.
But the people that are growing them.
I know that they are agiant pain in the butt.
They are challenging to grow.
There's issues with harvesting them.
Where you have to.
(02:25):
Uh, cut the stems off thembecause one of the apples are
picked off the tree, the stems.
Are kind of sharp and actuallycan, um, poke the other apples
when they're in a bin together.
So then you have.
Ended up having some issues orApple's getting all poked in ruined.
Um, that could be an issue.
And also they have thisthing where they turn.
(02:46):
Black.
We'll get these black spotsand stories sometimes.
And people don't want to buy that, even though they're still edible,
but you see the black spots andno one's going to buy those.
So there's some issueswith going Honeycrisp.
Uh, where people love the, the qualityof them in terms of the Christmas.
And when people will love that here.
But.
They want to do better.
(03:07):
So that's why we haveseen a whole bunch more.
Variety is coming the marketthat we're honey crisp.
Cross that Honeycrispis one of their parents.
So a few I've seen here.
We have a wild twist ever.
Chris juicy cosmic, Chrispazazz, Lucy glow, Lucy rose.
(03:33):
Um, sugar be, which isn't exactlya cross of a honey crisp, but it's
more like a mutation that nationalmutates, it took place in an orchard.
And I'm creating a new apples down.
Wasn't like intentional.
But all the other ones were intentionallydown where they're crossing.
Honey crisp another apple.
Um, I've seen commonly done with Fuji.
(03:53):
Fuji is there's a coupleof other ones with Fuji.
There's one with Honeycrisp and pinklady, which is the wild twist apple.
Which to me is one of the bestones that they've done so far.
I think.
That have been that cross guard, like wild twist is a really nice
one that has, um, good flavor.
As a nice sweet tartbalance going to flavor.
(04:14):
Good enough.
Um, Christmas.
And a great apple to eat one.
Um, in the spring time, which is when I'mrecording this episode right now, it's.
It's early April.
So that one's a good one.
Uh, ever Chris.
Is another.
Really good one.
That's a Fuji Honeycrisp cross that.
(04:35):
Those are really a nice, sweet, crisp apple.
They do live up to their name.
I don't think I've had onethat was softer Amelie.
They really do stay Chrisfor seemingly forever.
Uh, those again, become really popular.
During the spring time.
When they are way better than.
(04:57):
Honey Chris would be right now.
Cosmic crisp is the one that's reallytaken off because they have that.
They have the marketing.
Dollars behind that one.
And that one has really.
Just sort off there.
As.
Another.
Honey crisscross.
That's doing super well.
Um, do you see them in stores?
(05:17):
All over the place now.
Relative ease to find out.
So that one, that one'sbeen the one that I think.
I will, all the ones I've seenthat have really just taken off.
Uh, some of them just I'vehad just really don'ts.
Do it for me, like pazazz is.
Yeah.
It's a ticket.
You don't want it's that?
(05:37):
It's not super special to theflavors that oh, that special.
So there's been some that, thatsome apples they've crossed that
with honey, Chris, that just.
Not been that exciting.
Um, they have everyone's I've had sofar, has had, has the Christmas to
it, but not all of them have reallyhave the flavor that I would like.
So.
Yeah.
So you have to look at.
Um, each individualapple to see which one.
(05:59):
It turns out to be good, justbecause the cross record doesn't
mean it's going to be great.
Well, probably the most unique ones whenit comes to cross with a Honeycrisp.
Is the Lucy glow and Lucy rose apples.
Because these particular apples.
Actually have a red flesh.
So you cut into them.
And the inside of that is read.
Someone's pick your spreads in the apple.
(06:20):
They can kind of vary, um, in theirconsistency on how radish they are.
Dark red.
They are.
But it's really cool because that just,it's just, it looks really awesome.
Um, put that into a pie.
You got that kind of redflesh going on the pie.
It's just absolutely gorgeous.
And the examples tend to have more, more of a tart flavor to them.
Um, you'll see a lot of the,had a red fleshed apples.
(06:44):
There's a lot out there.
If you go to, like, I've been to thisheirloom orchard that had like, A thousand
different varieties of I'm not kidding.
They're like over a thousand varieties.
Uh, a lot of them are crab apples.
A lot of them have thatkind of characteristic.
So there's the Garceau.
Probably somewhere in theparentage of the genealogy.
Of Lindsay rose Lucy girl, you'regoing to see some crowd apple.
(07:08):
Family members to it.
By that.
Those are the most interestingones to think of all.
They have a very unique flavor.
Um, both of them to Lucy goes, seemsto be getting a little more popular.
The can Lucy roses.
More more available.
Th those two are really kind ofmore limited in that they don't.
Grow a ton.
Some of them at this point.
And so they're more, you get themin maybe starting in November.
(07:31):
And by January, they'rekind of hard to find.
Um, so, or.
So those are definitely two.
To look out for, if you have thechance to during their season.
So it's, yeah, it's been pretty wildseeing all of these new honey crisscross
and kind of wondering which one isgoing to win, which one is going to be.
Considered the top one, that's goingto not kind of criss off its pedestal
(07:56):
or is everyone going to do that here?
Uh, I think it's likely to happenin the future where one apple is
going to knock cutting Chris author.
Cosmic Chris is the most likelycandidate right now because
it's available everywhere.
It's.
Becoming very, very common to find now.
And I've seen some great deals on the Ms.
Sure.
Uh, Smith's, which is aKroger owned store in Utah.
(08:19):
They have, they had a Casacrest for 99 cents a pound.
There are a couple of times actually.
During this last season here.
So.
And get a good sell on them.
People can try them out.
Love them.
And you know, that price is, is.
Can we beat really in thegrocery store anymore.
Is there anything betterthan a dollar a pound?
Really?
So.
(08:40):
I've heard that one.
Is the, is the strongestHoneycrisp Canada.
And it's good.
It's good.
Apple.
It's it's.
Has the nice sweet tarred flavor to it.
I tend to find that the darker skin onesseem to have a better flavor, but I don't
like to make that a rule of RA becausethat's how we ended up with red delicious.
(09:00):
Because they bred them to bedarker and darker people thought
darker apples were better.
And they ended up becoming worseand worse and worse and worse to.
The point where everyone hates them now.
So.
But in this case, I've tastedas a consequence that had that.
We're more light colored, more dark, and every time so
far, it's been the dark ones.
So that seems to be thetrend with that apple.
(09:22):
So, um, just want to introduce you guysto some new honey criss crosses that you.
If you're hunting Chris fan,you may want to give a trout
to maybe they're going to be.
A new favorite apple of yours, or maybe.
You know, you want to jumpon the bandwagon before.
Other people get onone of these varieties.
Um, I think still right now, while twist.
Probably my favorite.
(09:42):
Um, The flavor isn't always as consistent.
As I would, like, I never had a bad one,but there's been some I've been great.
And some that have been just been.
Um, Fair.
Average affair.
Um, but when you have a goodwild twist, I think that one.
And it's.
Peak.
Off of a potential.
Is is my favorite out of those.
(10:04):
