(00:00):
Stone fruit is back with avengeance this month here.
And learn about all the otherdifferent fruits and the, you should
be buying during the month of mayin this month's fruit pics episode.
(00:40):
Hey, everybody.
Welcome to the first day of may.
So that means it's timefor another episode.
Of our best fruit to buy.
Looking at the month of may and oh,is this an exciting month for fruits?
And the big reason for that is stone.
Fruit is back.
(01:01):
We're going to have cherries again, yellow peaches, yellow nectarines white
peaches, white nectarines apricots plums.
All these things are heading backto your local grocery stores.
And they're not.
Flowing from south America.
And are are absolutely terrible.
I just do not.
Like when we see the stone fruitduring any winter time here.
(01:22):
Cause this is never any good,so excited to have it back.
But we got calm, excitedjust a little bit.
Cause there's some things and pitfallswe have to watch out for this month.
So let's start with peaches so thefirst pieces are coming up this month.
They usually come out of Californiaslightly first, and then we started
seeing some Southern peaches.
Depending on where you are in the country.
If you're more at Westcon thatcould see the Southern ones.
(01:43):
If, if you're more on the eastor definitely in the south,
they're going to see those.
For sure.
So usually the first early varieties are.
Only have that characteristic ofbeing early and they don't tend
to be the most sweet or flavorful.
I've occasionally had some locker.
I've had some better ones, butmost of the time, it's not that.
Not that great here.
So I kinda, I just kinda, you know, pump the brakes a little bit here that.
(02:06):
, trying to purchase to Betty.
This early time of year,I tend to look for.
More of the whites peaches or the whitedirectory is because they tend to be.
A little bit better thanthe other ones right now.
One thing you definitely want to lookfor, especially the arose is a fruit.
Or any.
Any peaches, nectarines.
Is look for those sugar spots.
(02:29):
So sugar spots are these littlewhite spots that kind of collect
on the outside of the fruit.
, this is actually sugar itself.
Uh, natural fruit sugars thatare crystallizing at the outside.
So when you see these either you'regoing to get a sweet piece of fruit.
That will have, Lisa thatsweet flavor to it here.
(02:49):
So that's what I kind of look out for.
Other cars they'll be better flavorfulones coming up on next month.
But early on, he's still, I miss them.
I still want to try them.
So I look for those sugar spots.
For the white.
Flush things in the beginning.
, next time we'll talk about Sherry's.
So the first cherry varietiescome out of California.
(03:11):
And they don't tend to be that great.
Early on I've occasionally hadsome ones that were decent.
Problem is the prices aresky high at the beginning.
The first year is that come outcan be like really expensive.
I've seen like seven, eight, $9 apound, and they're just, they're
really not really worth it.
At that point.
Um, so, but towards the endof the month, end of may, the
(03:34):
prices will start trickling down.
Especially when we get into theCalifornia being cherry season.
So being cherries are probablythe most widely grown Sherry.
There is.
, and, and this is actually a good sharing.
It's actually pre.
Good in a it's Christmas.
And played various.
, kind of sweet tart kind ofbalancing going on here.
So those are.
, One of the few cases where the mostgrowth thing actually is probably
(03:56):
one of the really good quality.
Varieties.
So.
It's hard to say, though, in the stores.
Exactly.
When those come in, because typicallyyou don't see them marked at all.
Um, so you're not going to say, oh,you're bringing cherries in, but
usually you can tell kind of actuallywith when prices start going down and,
The amount goes up cause they're wild.
They grounds.
(04:16):
You're going to see more of that.
So it's supply and demand situation.
So.
Towards the end of mag is when I wouldstart really kind of considering cherries.
Uh, so you see somekind of deal beforehand.
Um, you will see some Rainier.
Cherry is kind of showing up.
The early ones reallyaren't as good either.
You want to, you want to get onesthat are a little, have a little
more of that red blush on them.
, but that's something you can lookout for towards the end of the month.
(04:36):
So unlike cherries and peaches actuallyfind that the early store bought apricots.
The one are actually better than the onesyou see later in the year in the store.
, the, usually.
Smaller in sizes, you have better flavor.
Like I do not like.
Grocery store apricotsthat are like ginormous.
She's like, do you jumble apricots?
(04:57):
They are rarely ever any good.
They're usually kind of Amelie and.
It's not great.
So I would more stick to the smallersize ones and those I would, you.
You know, try out in the beginninghere, cause you can find some
decent store-bought ones, um,in the early part of the year.
So nothing beats that when you can getsome fresh in the farmer's market, if you
live in an area that grows apricots there.
(05:18):
A whole lot of places that do.
, I was a Michigan.
You can occasionally get down here, but they have big issue with that
blooming early and losing them.
, due to frost.
So apricots weren't, , aconsistent thing to see there.
Utah.
Is actually, , a reallygood place for apricots.
They.
Don't seem to have those freezes, the edit, the story and the crop.
(05:41):
Utah's been a great placeto find apricots, but you're
not going to find those.
, out until we get into like July.
Um, so right now you're kind of justdepending on what you're getting in
from California to the grocery store.
Usually I completelyavoid plums this month.
Allowing them are at the storesare still going to be wide.
You're going to get fromsouth America and this is.
(06:03):
They're just not really good.
, so in may I really kind of this.
Not really go for them.
I try to wait for June when youstarted seeing actually the plume.
It's or plum costs that arelike, , part pump, hot apricots.
, I tend to wait for those.
I think those are better.
So problems I've kind of justpass by for the moment here.
, I've got some other fruits, , now apples.
(06:23):
So.
This month.
We'll start seeing apples thatare, were harvested in New Zealand.
Shipped over here.
It really depends on the year and thestore to like you don't like some places
do more than somebody to really see them.
Um, one of my favorite style is if youcould find it is the lemonade, apple.
I started seeing them actuallyground from Washington originally,
(06:44):
they were always on for New Zealand.
So I'll try and see more of those now.
Th there are yellow apple.
Thanks.
Sweet tart flavor.
I don't think they're going,tastes like lemonade per se.
It's just that the color or the kindof sweet target may have going on.
And they're juicy sortof what I would look for.
I don't have, it really had, , theWashington ones this time of year or
(07:04):
do you see any New Zealand, apple?
, they're going to be fresher ofcourse, because they're in the
midst of their apple harvest now.
, because our spring is their fall.
So if you see some New Zealandgrown apples, I would say give
those a try because they're goingto be fresher than once you get,
so you'll see, you'll see those.
Um, this month.
I'm terms of apples.
You want to buy it from.
Literal grown more.
(07:25):
Locally more.
, in the United States.
So the more Chris ones are going tobe ever Chris while twist and cosmic.
Chris are the three.
That I think are going to be themost reliable right now, as we're
getting further away from ourown apple season here that they
were harvested, but those ones.
Seems to hold up the best.
Especially EverQuest.
(07:45):
I'm a Chris.
He lives up to his name is.
It's more of a sweet apple here.
So if you don't like your apple, just to be stripped sweet, you
probably want to pass on that one.
Maybe try a wild twist that hasa little more tartness to it.
, grape wise, we started seeing cotton candygrapes from Mexico and stores this month.
I'm excited to see those.
, again, we're getting a littlecloser to the U S here.
So we're seeing where to we'reseeing those, , blueberries.
(08:06):
So we started seeing more blueberries.
Grow in the us Congressstores and Georgia.
, blueberries come out this month andI think they are some of the best.
, that we have, , I still prefer this.
Blueberries and think theyare the best of the world.
Of course, I'm biased, a little biasthat, but, , Georgia blueberries, are
they ever do a great job raising years?
(08:28):
You usually get bigger packs of them.
, and you cannot have betterprice during this month.
There's kind of a big.
It's the largest volume of blueberries.
I think we see, , Domesticallythis early time of year.
So definitely watch for those.
, And then lastly, , citrus wisekind of getting, you know,
We're getting at the end now.
Kind of this, that what'sever left type of situation.
(08:51):
Now, harvest is really kind of done now.
, the two things I kind of look out for.
So when I'm buying stuff is.
The golden nugget mandarinsand the OHI, pixie, tangerines.
Those are two of the, of the best onesyou're going to find, , right now.
So I w I would look for those, , by name.
, because those are both really good.
Pixies are one of my favorites.
, nice sweet flavor.
(09:11):
, so if you can find those, thatwould be great for you to grab.
So guys, I hope I helped you pickout some of the best for this month.
I know it's getting kind of intomore of exciting fruit time.
, next month is for me, a lot of places,, is when you pick strawberries, come out
and, , let me see some of those, if you'remore in a Southern state now, so that's
a good time to go out there and do that.
Look.
For your, , At your localtype berries coming out.
(09:34):
And so we have, we're heading moreinto the setting fruit time here.
So I'm excited to, , I'm beingjoined some more varieties of fruit.
So thank you guys.
Let's say episode, if you're notalready make sure to sign up for our
seasonal fruit email list . So you canget all the low down on what's best
eaten, , throughout the entire month andall the different months of the year.
