(00:00):
July is one of the best times.
(00:03):
Of the year for fruit.
In this episode, we're goingto be talking about berries and
cherries, even some early apples.
Some peaches that tastes like peachpie, just so much amazing fruit.
You got to listen to this episode.
(00:42):
Hey guys, I'm excited to come to youtoday with our newest fruit pics episode.
We were in July and there isa ton of things to talk about.
So much great fresh fruit right now.
I can't wait to get to it.
And I want to start it off withSherry's because we are in the peak.
(01:03):
Of the fresh cherry season.
It does not get any better.
Than right now.
Rainier cherries are at their peak thismonth and they are a family favorite
because they are sweet and don't thing.
You're.
You're close.
So we do those a lot with my kids.
But there are also a couple.
Types of cherries that are like rain,Meers that I think are actually better.
(01:28):
Which are called a rando, Ruby andSkylar Ray, . They are so good.
Skylar Ray.
Is extremely flavorful.
And one of the bestcherries you will ever eat.
They are one of my wife's all time.
Absolute favorite varieties.
(01:49):
I was able to get somefor her, for her birthday.
At Costco.
So if you see them as a very limitedseason on them, Give them, a try.
They're going to be a little morepricey than your other types of
cherries, but for a once a yearsplurge, they're definitely worth it.
Now, it just talks abouta really sweet cherry.
I want to go on the opposite end nowand talk about some tart cherries.
(02:13):
Tart cherries are in season right now.
They tend to come outafter the sweet cherries.
Do.
If you're any states thathas you picked tart cherries.
That is something you definitelydon't want to miss out on.
My home state of Michigan leads thenation in sour, cherry production.
(02:35):
I've also seen them in Utah and Idaho.
We picked some last year in Utah.
Um, For a really good priceand they were so good.
They are what you want tohave for a pie or a cobbler.
They are far superior.
Too sweet cherries when baking, theyare just so much incredible flavor.
(02:57):
You get that sweet tart balance.
If you have a chance to get some tartcherries and do something with them.
I heavily recommended you have the tri.
They are great.
They're homemade jam.
And they also freeze exceptionally well.
Now let's talk about some peaches.
This is the time of year to getthose wonderful donut peaches.
The ones that have that kindof a weird Squatty shape.
(03:19):
Um, there's been somethat are now in doughnut.
Style containers.
That's like a, like a plastic clam shell.
And they're kind of lined up like donuts.
I'll ask a family treefarms has been doing.
Um, it's really kind of fun marketing.
They have their peach pie, donutpeach, which is, which is a yellow.
Flesh peaches out, any read on it.
Is this completely yellow?
(03:39):
Put the yellow.
On the side.,
if you find one that's perfectly ripe.
You will wonder if your favorite piespices were to sprinkled inside.
Somehow they have this reallykind of spicy, really good flavor.
So Laura's going to try.
I prefer though, even though the packagingwas so cute, those are the bigger ones.
I can get my hand on smaller ones.
(04:00):
I think those tend to be better.
I just like to have that.
Um, improved kind of like skin, the flesh ratio that you have
with a small piece of fruit.
Apples.
It's time to start talkingabout apples a little bit again.
Uh, not really in the grocerystore, but in farmer's markets and
orchards, you might be able to find.
(04:21):
The very early ripening attransparent apple or the Lodi apple.
There are two different varietyis both kind of similar.
Lodi is a little bit better.
I think on they are green skinand they are extremely tart.
Um, tart like those tart.
cherries or what I was talking about.
, They.
don't last very long either.
I have actually seen them crack.
(04:42):
I'm not kidding.
You I've seen them actuallyto starting to crack.
Um, so like, why the heck wouldyou want to buy these apples?
Well, they make the most.
Credible.
Pictured apple sauce.
You are going to find.
They just break down so beautifully.
Now you'll need to probablyadd some sweetener tubeless.
You really can stand something that tart.
(05:04):
You could, , do some peachesor nectarines in there too.
So it's really sweet to counteract that like a white, peach or
white nectarine, probably goingto have to add some additional
sugar to maybe about, I like honey.
Or brown sugar to kind of add some more.
A flavor to it.
But if you see those as a really good.
For applesauce.
(05:24):
And I was good for out of hand eatingunless you eat them immediately
and you like a tart, apple.
Now I want to talk berries.
I'm super pumped rightnow for bearing a season.
Because I am heading tothe Pacific Northwest.
One of the premiergrowing areas for berries.
I'm going to be looking out to try myfirst EverFresh, Marion Barry T Berry.
(05:45):
Larry poison Berry.
So excited for all these great berries.
If you are into a fresh black.
As barriers that is definitely something.
All four right now.
I've found them foragingseveral times in Michigan.
Wisconsin.
(06:06):
, They are so good.
Really small, reallyteeny, but tons of flavor.
I have the things you just got to eatenjoy as you can, but you can find.
A bigger size black raspberriesfrom different farms.
So I would look for those.
Those are so incredible.
Just the time you had toget out into your farms.
Uh, and finally is really cool.
(06:26):
Amazing dairies, especially ifyou pick them yourself, because
they're so good that way.
Um, that's especially true withlike raspberries that don't hold up.
Super well, Blueberries are aBerry that do hold up a lot better.
And so those you can pick yourself ifyou have the chance to, there's also
great deals on them at the grocery store.
So there.
Something that you can go either way with.
(06:48):
Uh, we met when she waswhat's better for your.
What's a better deal for you.
Sometimes you pick an actuallymore expensive than the store.
Uh, so it's gonna be viceversa, just really all depends
on what you have in your area.
And there's also a great experiencegoing out, picking your own blueberries.
If you have a nice.
Uh, breaking your hot weather.
If.
If it's too hot, I don't want.
(07:09):
Blueberries and the frying sun.
So, yeah, that's one you cango either way with, I think.
Also, this is a greattime of year for melons.
I don't really talk a tonabout melons cause they're
not really my favorite per se.
I'm not really into the texture melons.
But if you're looking for agood melon, Right now I would
look for the sugar kiss Mellon.
It is like a better cantaloupe.
(07:29):
It looks just like it came up , butit has a sweeter, stronger taste.
It's more tender and juicy.
Is that something I would definitelylook out for, if you're into melons.
It's also called plumcots are gettinginto their prime of the season.
I just recently had some amazing.
Plum sicko plots.
(07:50):
From HMC farms, , their.
Exclusive variety.
They are super good.
Really juicy, really sweet.
Really loved them.
So that's what to look out for.
Also, there are, you couldfind ones called dapple dandy,
summer punch dapple fire.
What's that last one was very interestingbecause it's actually part plum.
(08:14):
Apricots.
Either has some nectarine in it.
And then this crazy, what they're doingwith all these amazing stone fruits.
Now my son would be upset with meif they're not mentioned this month.
Sharing plums.
We're all as you may see themlabeled as cherubims or PLU.
Areas, um, so many differentkinds of names for these.
(08:37):
. But then anyway, they are a crossbetween a cheery and a plum.
Cherries and plums are related.
There is enough similarityto you that they can.
You could cross cross them together.
W what's resulted that as these plums.
Because they are more plum, likestill, but they are very sweet.
The red.
And they have.
The really small pit way smallerthan you would expect to have a pub.
(09:01):
So you are getting more fruit.
The problems themselves aretypically smaller in size.
Super sweet tons of flavor.
Don't last long in my house, on my son.
It's my.
I think it's his favorite fruit ever.
So they'll send me definitely.
Look out for it.
Those are my fruit picks for the month.
There are so many.
Amazing things.
(09:21):
Out there right now.
Just be enjoying the fresh fruit.
July actually is not myfavorite time of year.
I am not a fan of heat.
I like cooler months, but I get through July.
By tasting all of these amazing fruits.
So you should as well.
