Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's really easy to get caught up in this idea
that you have to have this big, big online business empire,
maybe because other people around you are talking about this,
maybe because the people you look up to on social
media are sharing this as the goal that you should want.
But remember this, If you build a business around someone
else's vision, you're going to end up further down the
(00:21):
road at some point where it's not going to feel aligned,
and you might even end up hating your business. Welcome
to Imperfect Action. I'm Steph Taylor. For years, I read
all the books, downloaded all the freebies, and did all
the courses, but it wasn't until I started taking imperfect
action that my business had its first million dollars. Here,
(00:42):
imperfect action is about doing things before you're ready, prioritizing
consistent action over perfect action, and moving forward even when
you're not sure you're doing it right. On this show,
you can expect mindset advice, actionable marketing tips, and strategies
to build a business that brings you more profit, more freedom,
and even more joy. Are you on the list to

welcome back to On Perfect Action. This is episode eight
hundred and forty nine. Today, I'm talking about this concept
(01:29):
of always needing to keep growing your business and whether
you really have to keep growing it or whether it's
okay to be content with where you're at right now. Now,
I'm gonna this is a pretty short me riffing a
little bit about growth, having gone through, you know, periods
of quite fast growth in my business, and this is
(01:51):
really just my take on this pressure that there is
online to constantly keep growing, growing, growing your business. So
the first point that I really want to make is
that with growth comes responsibility. And when my business grew
really quickly back in twenty twenty, I didn't realize that
one big shift would happen, and that was that my
(02:14):
audience would start to look at me as the mentor
and the role model, and that meant that I had
to lead by example. And part of this really meant
stepping up and getting into integrity. You know, I was
preaching the importance of consistency, but then I would skip
some podcast episodes because I just couldn't be bothered recording them,
or I would skip emails to my list because I
(02:35):
had so much on my plate, and I was preaching
the importance of showing up online when I was hiding
away right feeling really overwhelmed by everything in business. And
it took a while before I realized, i'll hang on.
People are actually watching what I do, They're learning from
my actions, and I am responsible for what they learn
from my actions. And this was the scariest part, and
(02:58):
it required so much mindset work with my coach at
the time to overcome this fear of responsibility, because at
that point my fear of responsibility was so big that
I didn't want to grow my business anymore. I was
really scared of what's stepping up to even further levels
would require from me. And it's only really in the
(03:19):
last couple of years now that I've started to feel
a little bit more comfortable with the level of responsibility
that I have now and that I'm open to higher
levels of responsibility. I think for a lot of us,
what we don't realize is that business growth requires a
lot of personal growth and the amount of mindset work
that goes into growing your business. Even when you're like, oh,
(03:41):
my mindset's good, I'm positive, everything feels really easy, I'm
not afraid of things, that's probably a sign that you're
actually not pushing yourself enough, because you know, outside of
our comfort zone that's going to start to bring up
all sorts of different fears, and that's where the personal
growth and the mindset work really really really matters. Okay,
the next thing I want to talk about is okay
(04:03):
to not want to have a huge empire. Like, it's
really easy to get caught up in this idea that
you have to have this big, big online business empire,
maybe because other people around you are talking about this,
maybe because the people you look up to on social
media are sharing this as the goal that you should want.
But remember this, if you build a business around someone
(04:24):
else's vision, you're going to end up further down the
road at some point where it's not going to feel aligned,
and you might even end up hating your business. And
inside my free workbook Escape the Messy Middle, I take
you through an exercise to get complete clarity on where
your business is heading, so that you can take action
from this place of intention and focus rather than trying
(04:47):
to do all of the things and exhausting yourself in
the process. So do you want to download that dm
me on Instagram at Steph Taylor dot co EMM just
those three letters EMM, or click the link in the show. No,
it's below this episode, all right, the next thing? Learning
to do less can be a massive challenge for many
of us, especially if you're an overachiever like I am.
(05:11):
Doing is our natural state of being, right. It's more
comfortable to do than it is to just sit back
and chill. And actually, I recently went to my psychologist
and I told her that I was feeling a bit stressed,
and my very first question to her was what do
I do to make it go away? Because doing just
felt like the solution to solving my stress. And you know,
(05:32):
for her response was something along the lines of, you
can't do your way out of this. You can't just
keep doing more. Even though doing more feels like the solution,
that's not the solution. And for me, like it's really
I'm learning to sit in the discomfort of not always
doing more and instead allowing myself to appreciate where my
business is at today because this already is beyond what
(05:56):
I ever would have imagined. Just you know, if I
think back to when I started this pot us five
years ago, there is no way I would have imagined
being where I am today. So I'm appreciating where my
business is at today. But that doesn't mean that I'm
being lazy or I'm not being ambitious. I can enjoy
where I am today and enjoy the process of growing
(06:17):
my business as well. It's less focused on that end
goal and more focused on, hey, let's have a little
bit more fun right now. Even if it does take
me a little bit longer to get to the end goal,
I'm going to have a lot more fun in the
process of getting to that end goal. I never really
want to get to that destination and then realize that
I completely missed the entire journey, or that I've just
(06:38):
spent the last ten years not enjoying my life. And
the final one that I want to touch on today
is are you constantly shifting your goalposts. When I first
started my very first business, I remember thinking, if I
can make ten thousand dollars a month from this business,
it'll be more than what I was making in my
corporate job. And I didn't realize that after expenses, taxes, software,
(06:58):
all of those things, it would actually end up being
less than what I made in my corporate job. But anyway,
when I hit that goal, I never actually stopped to
celebrate it. I was straight onto the next goal, and
then onto the next one, and somehow I would keep
moving the goalposts before I even reached the previous one.
And it's an exhausting way to run your business because
you never ever feel like you've achieved anything. You're constantly
(07:21):
aiming for this unattainable thing that's just out of your reach,
even though you have achieved so much. If you were
to stop and look back, you've probably achieved so much
since you started your business. But because you keep moving
that end goal, you never actually feel like you've achieved anything.
And at some point you might just have to say,
this is the goalpost that I am working towards, and
(07:42):
when I get there, I'm going to stop and I'm
going to celebrate how far I've made it. So there
you have it. A couple of little things that I
wanted to talk about because I know that there can
be this real conflict of overachiever and you that wants
to grow and do the best, that you can, versus
is the human in you who maybe wants to have
a little bit of fun along the way, and who
(08:04):
actually maybe is really comfortable and really happy with where
you are right now or with a point that's not
quite that massive online business empire that you think you're
supposed to have, because that's what you hear people talking
about online. So that is if for today's episode, if
you have learned anything from this show so far, i'd
really appreciate it if you could hit the ratings and reviews.
(08:27):

does mean a lot to me, and I've been loving
