Kristen Johnson
Alabama Teacher of the Year Nominee (2018-2019)
Nick's Kids Teacher Excellence Award Recipient (2016)
Kristen tells us, “My passion for teaching began when I was a nine-year-old girl in fourth grade. After being inspired by a truly enthusiastic teacher who was eager for students to learn and find their individual passions, I decided to pursue a future in teaching myself. As early as fifteen years old, a junior in high school, I started volunteering in classrooms and participated in several teaching opportunities including tutoring and small group leadership. In 2015, I graduated from The University of Alabama with Cum Laude honors, a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and a Letter of Intent with the Tuscaloosa County School System. In July 2015, I accepted a position at Maxwell Elementary School, fulfilling my dream of becoming a fourth-grade teacher. I taught fourth grade for two years and ventured into a split classroom including both fourth and fifth graders for the 2017-2018 and the 2018-2019 school years. In the past two years, I have strived to push myself to be the best teacher I could be by including a multitude of technology, student choice activities, and small group instruction in our daily routines. Currently, I am working on my Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Alabama. In the future, I plan to achieve National Board Certification.”
