Agi Keramidas (00:02):
Welcome to Personal Development mastery
podcast, and this is anothersnippet of wisdom where I select
my most insightful moments fromprevious episodes. Today's
snippet comes from the speakingcoach Pat Quinn, who talks about
the two most important storiesthat we tell ourselves, keep
listening to reclaim your pastand rewrite your future. Let's

(00:28):
dive right in.

Pat Quinn (00:32):
Because there are two stories that you need to
improve. There's two storiesthat you need to work on. One
story is the story of your past.
I think people think that thestory of their past is out of
their control, and it's not. Youget to craft that story. You get
to highlight the parts that youwant to highlight. You get to
ignore the parts that you wantto ignore. You get to tell that

(00:54):
story in a way that sets you upfor success and and you control
that you control that narrative.
You control that story that youtell. And you're not just
telling it to other people, you're telling it to yourself.
And so in the story that youtell about your past, are you

(01:15):
the conqueror? Are you theachiever? Are you the pivot?
What you get to craft thatstory. And so you don't have to
be the weakest character in thestory. You can be if you want to
be, but you don't have to be.
You get to choose that story.
And then the second story that Iwant you to work on is the story

(01:36):
of your future. You get to tellthat story. You get to tell that
story of where you are going.
You don't have to have it be astory of stuck. You don't have
to have it be a story ofmediocrity. You get to choose
that story, the story of yourfuture, and tell it to people.
Remember, great stories areordinary stories. They're short

(01:58):
stories, and they're told. Andso if you start telling people
the story of your past, and thentry changing that story a little
bit, just change it a littlebit, and give yourself some of
the power back. Give yourselfsome of the choice back. So give
yourself some of the controlback. And then if you start
telling people the story of yourfuture, and it's not a story of,

(02:20):
hey, we flatlined here and we'regoing to be in the same spot 10
years from now. But it's a storyof growth. It's a story of
impact, it's a story ofhappiness, it's a story of joy.
You get to choose these storiesand and I just think we are the
stories that we tell. Our pastis the story we tell about our
past, and they say, you know, history is written by the

(02:42):
victors. It's your history. Bethe victor, tell the story, and
it's your future. You can'tachieve a future that you don't
put into story because you won'teven be able to see it. So to
me, you know, it's two pieces ofadvice. I think they're
different from each other. Ithink they both need work. But I
tell you, if I were going tospend an afternoon just thinking

(03:04):
about storytelling, the firsttwo stories I would tackle are
the stories of my past that Itell myself and I tell others,
and the story of my future thatI tell myself and I tell others.
Changing those two stories, you're going to change your
life.
