(01:46):
Flora,we're really lucky to have you today.
Excited to be here.
Thank you.
So tell us a little bit about your story.
Flora, we rattled off a tonabout your experience, both
in traditional financial servicesand in the credit union industry.
What really was your experiencein traditional

(02:07):
and what drew you to the creditunion world?
Thank you, Michele.
I've been as you mentioned,I've been in the financial industry
for over 30 yearsbefore joining the credit union.
I worked at a savings and loanthat eventually became a bank.
And as the bank went throughmultiple changes
and was finally boughtby one of the top three national banks.

(02:29):
That was my clue that I need to leave.
And right around that time,I was approached by a credit union
to join themand lead the retail and service team.
And at first,
the first question that came to my mindwas, what the heck is a credit union?
I had no idea what credit union wasexcept,

(02:51):
you know, they had loansand I knew about that.
I ended up taking the positionand I was pleasantly surprised
that the credit unions aren'tfocused on making profit for shareholders,
and they're all aboutserving their members
and making a difference in their lives.
And that really struck a chord with me.

(03:13):
That was almost 15 years agowhen I joined the credit union world,
and I've been here since thenand never looked back.
As far as my roles,
my journey in the financial industrystarted as a part time teller.
I started in in a branch actuallyout in New Jersey

(03:35):
in that savings and loan that I mentioned.
And that was really my first real tasteof financial services.
And I worked overtime,
worked my way up to lead the retail team.
Mostly.
I did managea couple of departments internally,
but the majority of the six yearsthat I was in the banks,

(03:57):
I was managing the retail team.
What I
lovedmost about this journey was able to lead
and watch my team grow and develop.
I always believed in catching people,
doing something rightand celebrating their success.
Nothing was more gratifying to methat seeing someone

(04:20):
taking on new challengesand succeed in the role.
And imagine when you mentor someoneand you see them going
and getting developed and promotedand go to the next level.
That was the best part of my roleas a leader.
I always believed in catching people, doing something good, and

(04:42):
and I believed in in their fateand celebrating their success.
So I in turn, I became a servant
leader, that it was all about my teamand creating an environment
that everybody could thriveand feel valued and appreciate it.
Having started in the retail

(05:02):
banking, I always had a soft spotfor the retail branches.
I knew how challenging that role is.
Juggling different things from serving
the customers or members and credit unionproviding
stellar service,watching operations, staffing.
And that experience really shaped me

(05:23):
to be who I ended up being a leader
that wanted to help the team growand go to the next level.
When I transitioned to the credit unionside,
the people helping peoplephilosophy really resonated with me
and every role that I've had, whetherit was in the banking or was in the credit

(05:43):
union, really reinforcedwhat is really all about.
It's all about people.
And that was something that I careddeeply about.
It was gratifyingwhen I joined the credit union.
Watching people changing lives,
you know, in our branches, which I was not familiar with,

(06:05):
I always thought, it's about makingprofits, you know, or goals.
And and of course, you know, service.
We knew service is important, but really deep down,
the focus was making profitfor our shareholders.
So it was refreshing to come to the creditunion and seeing people care.
They want to meet people where they're atand take them to the next level

(06:27):
and changing lives.
You will see someoneat the verge of bankruptcy
with almost no credit at allcoming to the credit union
without being judged and feeling safeand meeting with trusted advisers
and help them change their livesand come back the following year
and get qualified for getting a car loanand eventually save for the rainy days.

(06:50):
That was really rewarding.
And that that's all about, you know, helping people.
And it's really refreshing for me.
That's so great. And you've really done it all.
So starting from a teller on all the wayup to what you're doing now.
And Flora, there's a million
things to love about you,but your style is high on my list.
But let's talk about style for a minute, because I'll say that

(07:13):
when my team and I are out in thecommunity, there's still so many people
that are unaware about whatcredit unions are.
And I have a similar story. I do.
When I first got started with my career,I had no idea what credit unions
were all about.
What would you say about our style?
What are what is credit unions all about?
So credit unions are all about peopleand not profits.

(07:34):
In time when the cost of living is high, people struggle managing their finances.
That's where credit unionsstep in and support our,
you know, our members and and tryto make a difference in their lives.
Credit unions are member owned, meaning that they own its share
of the credit union and we're there toserve and help their members.

(07:57):
Our members, the
key difference between the banksand credit unions instead,
banks are focused on making profitsfor their shareholders,
and credit unions exist
to serve the members and the communities.
We don't issue bonds or stocks.
Instead, we turn aroundand give the money back to our members
in terms of lowerloan rates, higher savings

(08:20):
rates and little or no fees.
One thing that makes credit unionsunique is our eight co-operative
principles, that those are basically corevalues for credit unions.
And we all 82,000 credit unionsand financial co-ops around the globe.
They follow these core values.
For example, we do democratically run.

(08:43):
Each member has an equal voteno matter how much they have on deposit.
Plus, our board members are volunteersand are selected from our membership.
We also love to work together cooperationamongst
cooperatives, credit unions, cooperativerather than compete.
And that's very uniqueto the cooperative world.

(09:05):
Right.
Which helps us have several network of ATMbranches and share branches
so we can serve the membersno matter where they go.
Education is another key point
for what we do.
We're not just there to provide service.
We're committed to help members advanceand improve their financial wellness

(09:29):
through education and support.
So while banks and credit unions
have similarities,we both provide financial services.
The difference lies in our focus.
Credit unions are 100% about improvingthe financial
well-being of our membersand making an impact in the community.

(09:51):
When the banks are focusedon making profit for the shareholders,
when you join a credit union, you are joining a cooperative
and that's what works for youand nothing else and not for profit.
Yet thank
you for sharing thoseand including financial education, Flora.
You know, financialeducation is near and dear to my heart.

(10:12):
Our team designsall of our education programs
and we say it all the timeto all types of people in different parts
of their financial journeysthat a more financially savvy person
is a more financially healthyand empowered person.
What would you say about PatelClose mission
and any connectionsto the credit union movement?

(10:34):
Sure.
At the telco, our mission is building our members
financial health and well-being,as you know, and we are giving our team
the knowledge, the skills, the resources, information
tools, products that helps membersmake the most of their money.
We meet them where they're at and offerguidance and support to help them.

(10:56):
It truly stems from a committedand focused team
that wants nothing excepthelping and serving members, and that's
truly what we are all about.
We're not just saying, Well,we want to improve
the financial well-being of our members.
We mean it.
We practice it every single day.

(11:17):
And it's really amazinghow all of us work together,
come together to do just that.
And in terms of creating products
and solutions,we always have members in mind.
We provide a toolbox to our team
members to meet where the members at
and offer those solutions to help them getwhere they want to go,

(11:41):
depending on their short termor long term goals.
Helping others is in our DNA.
We recognize team members when we catchthem making differences in people lives.
So a recognition is based on thatand we are helping members
throughout their financial journey, whether managing their debt,

(12:01):
saving for emergency plan for the future.
We offer those personalized solutionsthat it's truly geared towards
advancingand building their financial wellness.
As the financial world evolvesand we know it's rapidly evolving,
King Patel, who is ready to move forwardwith focusing on financial well-being,

(12:23):
with solutions that we havethat are member focused.
We are committed to make a differencein our communities.
And the new digital tools and innovative
ideas were here to great to create a great
banking experience for
our memberswhile staying true to the mission.
The credit union mission of peoplehelping people.

(12:47):
As Louis Herring, one of our credit union pioneers, once
said, We are on an ever changing pathwith a never changing purpose.
So I just got goosebumps.
I did just get that really remindsof our mission and the opportunity
we have to truly make an impactand change lives.
So we should have had you onfor the very first episode of this show.

(13:10):
And for all of our listeners out there,Flora's really, you know, breaking down
the history of credit unionsfor us, reminding us of Patel close
mission, reminding us of the collectivecredit union mission.

about exactly what Flora meansby providing financial health and wellness
