It seems like we read about bizarre uses for Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) every day, but what practical uses do we see in the field? Also, will A.I. on the farm help or replace the farmer entirely? Colin Hurd, CEO of Mach, is creating AI technology already making its way into Iowa farms and explains the future of farming.
The company has roots in AI tech for the US Army, creating AI utility vehicles that would drive around the perimeter of a base to check for hazards autonomously. The use-case for the farm is apparent. Hurd sees farmers of the future being able to run their equipment 24 hours, even at night. He also sees farming becoming much safer in the future. Farmers will have full control of their machinery but at a safe distance. The future farm equipment will also be able to monitor areas and shut down in the event of danger. It's an increase in control but a decrease in physical contact.
Hurd also answers the big question: will we no longer need farmers as bots replace them?
