pop culture that are helpingkeep us.
Happy while hopefully it bring asmell to your face along the
way.
And
Stephen (00:20):
today we're going to
find out the answer to who you
gonna call as we destroy thechildhoods and misogynistic
incels everywhere.
When we cover the 2016 reboot of
Steve (00:32):
Ghostbusters.
I can't wait and was gonna giveit at least a minute before you
mention incel, so I lose thatbet.
Stephen (00:41):
Yeah.
I decided to get it right offthe bat so that if somebody
that's.
Listening to this right now andthey're like, I don't wanna
listen to that thing about fightfemale Ghostbusters.
You can go ahead and turn it offcuz that's what we're gonna talk
Steve (00:55):
about.
All right.
Excellent.
Love.
But before we talk about that,my love, what's been making you
happy?
Stephen (00:59):
Recently it's Black
Lady Sketch show, Uhuh Black
Lady Sketch Show, Uhuh.
So.
I am absolutely in love and havebeen for several years now with
the Black Lady Sketch Show on HB O creator Robin Thek Yes.
Is just absolutely brilliant.
(01:20):
She has a wonderful cast ofpeople on there.
I mean, it's because of her thatQuinta Bronson I,
Steve (01:30):
I said Abbott
Stephen (01:30):
Elementary.
Yeah.
And she created AbbottElementary.
And then we also had Ashley,Nicole Black, who was incredible
on there and it appears she hasmoved on in the fourth season.
But Gabrielle, Dennis and SkyTownsend are just.
They're all so good.
(01:51):
I mean, Gabrielle Dennis, asMary Magdalene Yeah.
Gets me every time.
Steve (01:57):
I it.
I love it and I know that it wascertainly not meant for us, but
I feel like we can enjoy itnonetheless.
And it is just definitely, youdon't have to be a black lady to
enjoy it, but it certainly won't
Stephen (02:07):
hurt.
Right.
And if you, and
Steve (02:09):
I also realize that US
gays take a lot from black lady
Stephen (02:11):
culture.
Yes.
I think they call thatappropriation.
Oops.
Yeah.
But what's been making youhappy?
My darling?
Cocaine.
No bear.
Oh
Steve (02:22):
yes.
Cocaine bear.
Yes, I am.
I am still sober, but I didenjoy watching cocaine.
Bear with you.
Yeah.
It was exactly what you wouldthink.
And nothing else, more or lessthan that.
It is about, it took place inwhat the eighties Uhhuh and
they're like in the forest andthere's a bear on cocaine and
shenanigans and suits.
And it delivered exactly whatyou would expect from that.
(02:44):
And nothing more, but nothing
Stephen (02:45):
less.
Elizabeth Banks was a brilliantdirector for this, and this just
goes along with the movies rightnow that are just saying, Hey,
come watch us.
It's gonna be fun.
Like Megan.
Megan was one and they're bothon Peacock.
Yep.
And Violent night.
Yes.
They told you in the trailerthis is gonna be.
(03:09):
Ridiculous.
Campy fun.
And it was, and it wasthoroughly enjoyable.
So, and now it's free.
And now it's free.
If you have peacock watchcocaine bear.
It's a good time.
Yes.
Steve (03:23):
All right.
I think it's time to get into itthough.
What is a ghost buster?
Stephen (03:29):
So Ghostbusters are
people.
That capture ghosts.
Steve (03:34):
Okay.
Yes, I'm familiar.
This was an original movie backin the eighties, right?
It was it was created, I learnedlike yesterday.
Yeah, that it was created by DanAkroyd and Harold Ramis.
And those are two of theGhostbuster dudes.
Yes.
I didn't realize that.
They were the ones who createdit as well, which is wild and
cool.
I know.
And while only there was thisone and then the second one, but
(03:57):
it also ha created a franchisethat expanded with theme park
attractions or cartoon seriesvideo games, comic books, action
figures and more.
Which begs me to ask, how bigwere the Ghostbusters in your
childhood?
Stephen (04:09):
So big like.
The Ghostbusters were just ahuge thing in the eighties.
I watched both movies when theycame out in the theater.
That was actually my firstIntroduction to Sigourney Weaver
was, ooh, in these movies.
I watched the Saturday morningcartoon, the real Ghostbusters.
I had all the action figuresincluding the Firehouse Play
(04:32):
set.
Nice.
I played the video games on theCommodore 64, and then on the we
and I'm now again on the switchand the Ghostbusters were just a
huge.
Huge part of my childhood.
Like so in the real Ghostbusterscartoon, Slimer was their
sidekick.
Yes.
Steve (04:52):
And I do remember like
the Ghostbusters movies I had
never seen before You, but I didwatch the cartoon and like I had
a Slimer toy.
I don't think I had like all theaction figures and sets and
everything like that, but Idefinitely had like at least a
Slimer toy or two.
Like, so I was familiar with theGhostbusters as a brand, but it
was only when we met that youwere like, This is proof that
(05:15):
you were abused as a child.
Yeah.
You can't
Stephen (05:17):
have been born in the
eighties.
And never seen the Ghostbusters,
Steve (05:22):
but I did do the Disney
experience at the theme park and
I was one of the little kidswhen I was little that was
called up on stage toparticipate in hunting ghosts.
Well, that's phenomenal.
Yes.
So the question though, withthis whole reboot concept we're
going with this month is whyreboot the Ghostbusters?
Stephen (05:40):
So there had been talk
forever and a day about a third
Ghostbusters movie.
Because Ghostbusters two in1989, huge success again.
Yes, it was thoroughlyenjoyable.
I personally think Ghostbusterstwo was a more enjoyable film
overall.
Steve (05:59):
I do remember liking it
more.
Stephen (06:01):
Yeah.
But Bill Murray had gotten sosuccessful they couldn't nail
him down to commit to theproject and like, as.
Impressive as all the otherpeople were that were in the
movie and they were great.
Gil Murray was the one that tookoff.
Steve (06:18):
Yeah.
Excellent.
Yes.
And then with Harold Ram's deathin 2014, that's what kind of
prompted Sony to reboot theseries instead.
So in 2015 it was announced ourGhostbusters were all women,
which was an issue for a show ofistic pigs everywhere.
Do you want to talk about why orwhy not does the gender of our
(06:38):
Ghostbusters matter?
Okay.
So you
Stephen (06:40):
would've had several
different things.
If it had been all maleGhostbusters, you would've had
comparisons to the original, butI think people would've
eventually have accepted it.
Mm-hmm.
If it had been a mix of men andwomen, Probably the same of
people accepting it, as long asthe woman wasn't the best one of
the bunch.
(07:01):
Or you would have a situationlike you do with captain Marvel
or Ray from the Star Warsmovies.
Mm-hmm.
But because it was all women, not only would it never be quote
as good, it would be the wokeagenda destroying the childhood
of fragile males everywhere.
Ignoring the fact that all thecurrently living original cast
(07:24):
made cameos in the reboot, inessence, giving their approval
to the film and the reboot.
But this didn't matter to angrykeyboard warriors.
Steve (07:35):
All right.
Do you feel better now?
I do.
Okay.
Sounds good.
Stephen (07:40):
So if it, but if it
hadn't have been a Lady
Ghostbusters, what kind would it
Steve (07:43):
have been?
The obvious answer is drag queenGhostbusters call us Sony for
your next reboot.
I would love some drag queenGhostbusters.
Stephen (07:55):
So, and I've, I would
actually love to see that as
well.
Honestly, I think the moviewould've gone over more smoothly
if it was in the same universe.
As the originals, if one of thenew Ghostbusters was related to
the original, or if one of theoriginals was still running the
office or had been their mentor.
(08:16):
Yeah, something like that.
But by making its own universeand not related to the als,
Minnie felt cheated.
So I,
Steve (08:24):
well, I think they feel
better later on.
Yeah.
But yes, this movie was releasedJuly 9th, 2016 with a budget of
144 million and a box office of229.1 million, and it's
considered a flop.
Yes.
And I mean, 229.1 million issomething I would accept in the
(08:44):
bank account, any today, but inall seriousness, does$144
million for the movie that wesaw Sound.
Like money well spent orexecuted, or does it seem bigger
than normal?
Stephen (08:55):
It seems a lot more
expensive than normal.
I mean, honestly the specialeffects are absolutely
incredible, but I think theirbiggest issue mm-hmm is that
they have five A list actorsthat were at the height of their
popularity in all lead roles.
So I can imagine that thesalaries for the cast.
(09:18):
We're a big
Steve (09:18):
part of it.
Yes, and I mean, I can alsoimagine that some of the issues
that you encounter when you haveFour Lady Ghostbusters, you have
to worry about the productioncost of Civil H tampon and women
products.
You have to make sure that theycan take off when they have
their period.
There's monthly abortions goingon, clearly, obviously.
(09:41):
So, I mean, th this is part ofthe risk of having all female
Ghostbusters.
That's what I read on themessage boards, right?
Stephen (09:46):
I mean, yes.
So just so you know,
Steve (09:49):
he is, I do not kidding.
I do not believe any of that.
Sorry, ladies in our lives, welove you.
Yeah.
And this is, but that's whatpeople were
Stephen (09:55):
saying.
That's ridiculous.
But I mean, they had these.
Four Amazing women and Thor.
Yeah.
Like that's not gonna be cheap.
Yes.
Well
Steve (10:05):
it was also directed by
Paul Fig.
Yep.
And written by him and KatieDalt.
And we know their names becauseFig did Bridesmaids, which was
very, very funny.
Yeah.
And Dalt did Parks and Rec,which I hear good things about,
but never fell in love withmyself.
Stephen (10:21):
Correct.
And it stars Melissa McCarthy,Kristen Wig, Kate McKinnon,
Leslie Jones, and ChrisHemsworth.
Huge.
Steve (10:29):
Yes.
And Melissa McCarthy actuallywas originally set to play the
role of Patty, which ultimatelywent to Leslie Jones.
Paul realized that McCarthy hadalready played similar
characters in his previousfilms, like in Bridesmaids.
Yep.
And said I wanted to unleashLeslie on the public in the same
way we unleashed Melissa on thepublic in bridesmaids, which is
what really blew up her career.
With a very showy role.
(10:50):
And
Stephen (10:51):
honestly, I love what
they did with Patty's character.
She may not have been ascientist, but they let us know
that she's extremely intelligentwhen it comes to New York City
and its history, and that's animpressive amount of knowledge.
Steve (11:03):
Yes.
Well, why don't we talk aboutthat knowledge and what happened
with the movie.
So what
Stephen (11:07):
had happened was, yes,
a group of people are taking a
tour of the Aldridge Mansion inNew York City.
The tour guide Garrett tells thegroup.
Of Gertrude Aldridge, adisturbed woman that was kept
locked in the basement by herfather.
A candlestick falls over on thetable near the basement to creep
the group out, but is just partof a trick.
Garrett played.
(11:28):
What he doesn't see is a devicebeneath the nightstand that is
flickering and vibrating.
Steve (11:35):
Yes.
Now my love.
Would you want to go on a tourof the Aldridge Mansion?
Stephen (11:40):
Yes, 100% because like,
They, they tell us that there's
a clock that took the place of aRomanian woman and her child on
a lifeboat of the Titanic.
And it also has the room wherePT Barnum first had the idea to
enslave elephants and a massmurderer was locked in the
basement.
Yes,
Steve (12:00):
please.
Yeah, that sounds like fun forus.
Yeah.
Now, as these is closing upshop, Garrett hears a noise in
the basement.
The door begins to shake, and heruns for it.
Garrett tries to run out of themansion, but the doorknob has
been heated.
He tries to break out a windowwith a stool only for the stool
to be thrown back at him.
Garrett runs back towards thebasement.
The floor is filling up withgreens, green slime, and the
(12:22):
stairs break apart.
Garrett holds on his, he sees aghost rise up from the floor,
and I think that Garrett wasdead at first
Stephen (12:30):
and, but we do know
that he pooped his pants.
He
Steve (12:34):
did poop his pants, but
yes.
Have you ever witnessed anythingparanormal like this?
Stephen (12:39):
Yes.
But whether they were actual, like whether the visuals I saw
were paranormal or if it wassleep paralysis.
Mm-hmm.
I'm not sure because youremember my times like when we
were in the apartment Yeah.
In Laurel Park and I would saythere was a dark figure at the
door and it came towards thebed.
(13:00):
And then I also vividly rememberthere was a night when I was
growing up, That I had had anightmare.
And so I went to sleep in momand dad's bed, and I woke up in
the middle of the night andthere was a glowing orbi thing
coming from their closet towardsthe bed.
And like, I still remember tothis day seeing that.
(13:24):
Wow.
But there was also this time onan overnight ghost hunt where we
were in a room and it was July.
So I want to make it clear thatit's, Hot.
Mm-hmm.
And there were pockets offreezing cold air.
Not the whole room, justsections, and the AC was on, so
it's not like the air wasn'tcirculating.
And also our phone batterieswere losing a percentage without
(13:46):
use, like 1% every threeminutes.
So you could just like look atyour phone and watch the
percentage drop.
That's not normal.
And also flashlight, batterieswent dead.
After about an hour though I hadbought.
A new flashlight just the monthbefore and put brand new
batteries in that day.
Spooky?
Yeah.
What about
Steve (14:06):
you?
No.
But I knew you had stories, so Iwanted to give you the chance to
share.
I appreciate that.
Yes, you're welcome.
Would you like to, what happensnext?
Stephen (14:21):
Sure.
At Columbia University, Derek,Dr.
Aaron Gilbert, Dr.
Theoretical Particle Physics isapproached by Ed Mulgrave, a
historian at the AldridgeMansion.
Who also ha happens to have abook that Erin wrote some years
ago on the existence of ghosts.
It looks
Steve (14:37):
like her.
I mean, it it also has herpicture in it.
I don't know if it's actuallyher.
Yeah.
Oh
Stephen (14:42):
it is.
It is.
She's not proud of havingwritten it, and she's even less
than pleased to learn that it'sresurfaced.
Erin knows it was done by herformer friend and colleague,
Abby Yates.
Ed approaches Erin because ofthe haunting at the Aldridge
mansion and asks her to look inon it.
As Erin looks up Abby's currentworkplace, she learns from the
university's Dean HaroldFillmore, that she is up for
(15:05):
tenure, so she does what she canto hide knowledge of the book.
Steve (15:09):
Yes.
Now the, although Harold Remuspassed away in 2014, thus could
not make a cameo alongside hisfellow castmates, there's a bust
of his head just outside ofAaron's University office near
the beginning of the film.
The bus was later donated to theHarold Remus Film School at
Chicago's second City whereRamis became, began his career.
And I didn't know that Chicagoactually had two different
(15:31):
cities named Chicago.
What's their second city?
Second
Stephen (15:35):
City is like that, so
you know how Saturday Night Live
started as the not ready forprimetime players?
Uhhuh Second City is a comedyand improv troop.
Steve (15:48):
Oh, I thought like there
was Chicago and then there was
the other Chicago, right next toChicago that was called Second
City.
That makes more sense.
Stephen (15:56):
Yeah, no, so it, and
it's kind of like the two lead
characters from Schitt's Creekfirst met while doing that sort
of thing in
Steve (16:04):
Canada.
Yes.
Now, have you written or donesomething in your past that
makes you cringe now?
Stephen (16:10):
No, not that I can
think of.
Even my old American Idol blogstill makes me smile.
Steve (16:14):
Well, there you go.
What about you?
I, I, I'm like my own worst cricritic with anything I write.
So even when I write it, if I'mlike, this is brilliant, if I go
back like three months, sixmonths, a year, 10 years later,
I'm like, this is garbage.
What was I thinking?
Stephen (16:25):
I'm never that hard on
myself.
I'm like, look what I created.
Steve (16:28):
Well, there you go.
Now Erin invites Abby in her labwith her new work partner,
Jillian Holtzman, a brilliantengineer who's also a bit
eccentric and nutty.
My kind lady.
I love Kate McKennon.
Yes.
Erin and Abby are still upsetwith each other over the book
and how Erin abandoned theirwork and Erin demands.
Abby takes the book off Amazon.
Erin then brings up the Aldridgemansion.
(16:50):
Haunting, inspiring, Abby andHolzman says, spring into action
with Erin.
Reluctantly joining them becauseshe doesn't really have much of
a choice.
Yes.
Now, are you team Erin or Abbyon this conflict
Stephen (17:01):
team Abbey?
A hundred percent I believe.
If you have strong beliefs onsomething and a best friend who
was right there with you.
And you give up your passion tofollow mainstream success while
ignoring your authentic self, that it's just sad.
Bravo to Abby for sticking toit.
What about you?
Steve (17:22):
I mean, ultimately Abby
has the right attitude on life,
but I don't know how I wouldfeel if I did this whole project
with someone back in my twentiesthat I put behind me and
switched directions, and thensomeone without my consent
published it and put my pictureand information up on Amazon
saying, look what I did withthis dude back then.
Stephen (17:39):
You also seem to have
abandoned your friend too.
Steve (17:43):
Well, my friend can suck
it.
That's why I abandoned them.
I.
Stephen (17:48):
Yeah, I'm Team Abbey
though.
Okay,
Steve (17:49):
fine.
The three
Stephen (17:51):
ladies arrive at the
mansion with some equipment.
The basement has been lockedtight.
Aaron steps on some gooey greenslime, and the P K E meter goes
crazy.
Suddenly the three do noticethat the basement door is now
open and emitting an eerie blueglow.
They are then face-to-face withthe ghost of Ger Aldridge, who
(18:12):
looks beautiful and relend andare old-fashioned.
And Erin approaches her calmly, but Gertrude's face turns
demonic and she spewsectoplasmic bile all over.
Aaron, the ghost flies out ofthe building.
The ladies record a video withAaron proclaiming that ghosts
are real.
Ghosts are real.
(18:33):
Unfortunately, this falls intoFillmore's hands and he fires
Aaron for being a badrepresentation on the school.
Leading to a long and awkwardwalk of shame.
There you go.
Steve (18:43):
Yes.
And I found it funny when Iresearched it.
Kristen Wigg had to get spewedon twice the, the first time, I
forgot what happened.
The second time her wig cameoff, so they had to actually
splice the two together becausethe idea of having to do it a
third time, she was like, no,thank you.
Can you make do with the two youhave?
And they're like, yes, yes wecan.
That's funny.
(19:04):
Now have you, can you relate toAaron with what it feels like to
get in trouble at work for yourbeliefs?
Stephen (19:09):
Why?
Yes.
Yes, I can.
So I stood up againsttransgender bigotry and
ignorance, and I was told that Ihad made everyone uncomfortable
by me voicing how wrong theywere and that I should learn
when to, and I quote, keep mydamn mouth shut.
Steve (19:29):
Ooh.
I wouldn't wanna work for acompany like that anymore, and I
don't.
There we go.
Now that Erin is jobless, shedecides to join Abby and
Holtzman in their research, justin time for them to also lose
their job.
After talking to the dean, whohappens to be quite the dick,
they steal equipment from theschool's lab and decide to open
up their own facility, andthere's a little jab because
(19:53):
Abby says, unlike Columbia, thisinstitute is a hundred percent
behind us.
And this is a reference to theoriginal Ghostbusters movie
where Columbia allowed itsfacilities to be used for
filming as long as its name wasnever mentioned.
Stephen (20:06):
Yeah.
I think that they probably usedthe whole Empire State
University that a lot of placesuse when they're talking about
New York.
Yes.
On the video and the comments, there were many things like,
ain't no bitches gonna hunt, noghosts.
And so it's like when they werefilming this, they knew exactly
what the online people weregonna
Steve (20:26):
say.
Oh, for sure.
And then we meet MTA workerPatty Tolan.
She is approached by a weird guynamed Rowan North.
He rambles on about a fourthcataclysm, which Patty pays no
mind to because she's an MTAworker in the city and probably
hears worse than weirder stuffevery day.
100%.
She sees him climb down theplatform and onto the tracks and
into a tunnel.
(20:47):
So it's her job to go after him.
Behind her Rowan implants inanother device similar to the
one we saw in the mansion.
Patty then sees a ghost in aprison suit.
She runs like hell away from itas she should.
And then we see Rowan talkingcrazy to himself at work about
being bullied in the universe, bending to his will.
Charge the lines, create thevortex, break the barrier.
Stephen (21:10):
Yeah.
That's absolutely not theweirdest thing that she's ever
seen at the mta.
Oh, for
Steve (21:16):
sure.
Yes.
Yeah.
But this time she goes to theGhostbusters.
Stephen (21:20):
Yes.
Erin Abbey and Holtzman set upshop in a new location above a
Chinese restaurant as theDepartment of Metaphysical
examination.
A young man named Kevin Beckmanshows up for a receptionist job.
That's Chris Hemsworth.
Yes.
Aaron thinks he's hot, butduring the interview, Kevin rubs
to be the epitome of a Jimbo.
(21:40):
Yeah.
Still they hire him on the spot.
He's also the only one thatapplied.
Yes.
The ladies are then visited byPatty, who mentions the ghost.
She spotted in the subway.
Steve (21:49):
Yes.
Now, before settling on therestaurant, they toured the
firehouse from the original, from the first two movies, but
it was out of their price range,$21,000 a month.
In the original movie, it was adump and rundown, and Dan Akroyd
had to convince the others totake it.
And this is they, they werelike, we want it, and they
couldn't have it.
Yeah.
Stephen (22:07):
Abby creates an ad that
says, if you see something, say
something.
But that's the anti-terrorismad.
Yeah.
So she says, Well, what about ifthere's something strange and
then she gets interrupted?
Yes.
Steve (22:20):
And in the interview
scene, Chris was concerned
having to face off against threecomic geniuses.
Yeah.
As he doesn't consider himselfmuch of an improviser.
But when the time came, heactually improvised the bit with
the lens free glasses as well asthe mo the dog named Mike Hat.
Yeah,
Stephen (22:36):
my cat, his dog adds
with the ghost, with the boobs
and the hot dog flying over thehouse.
When they tell him don't listen,he covers his eyes and when he,
and when he strikes the gong toblock out the loud sound, he
again covers his eyes.
Is.
Steve (22:52):
I know, but at the same
time, it's amazing.
At work, I am recharge in chargeof receptionist and I have to
tell you that if Chris Hemsworthcame in and applied to be my
receptionist, even if he wasthat dumb, I would probably
still hire him.
Oh.
And work with him every day andjust put up with it.
Cuz they'd be like, oh, butyou're Chris Hemsworth.
Stephen (23:09):
Yeah.
Like if we, I would hire him todo accounts payable.
Even if I had to go behind himand redo it.
Yeah, exactly.
Steve (23:18):
Now, Patty leads the
ladies to the tunnel where she
spotted the ghost.
Patty tells them that above thatpart of the subway was a prison
where people were put to death.
Holtzman brings along someequipment she built to catch the
ghost.
They see the same ghost thatPatty saw hovering above them.
They record the ghost with theirHD cams while Aaron is given a
proton laser to capture it.
(23:39):
The laser isn't strong enough tohold down the ghost and the
train is coming fast.
The ladies run to safety as thetrain hits the ghost, causing
them to get splattered withectoplasm slime while the ghost
is stuck on the train.
Okay.
Stephen (23:52):
Something that I love
in this Yeah.
In the, she doesn't get theweapons right the first time.
Yes.
In the original they do.
Which seems
Steve (24:01):
unlikely.
Stephen (24:02):
Yeah.
And so I love in this that shetries one and then, and then it
gets better and then it getsbetter.
And then she does new versionsof the things and I'm like,
Steve (24:10):
and you also see them
like te testing it on the alley,
which I really like throughoutthe movie.
Yeah.
This
Stephen (24:15):
all makes sense.
I really like it.
There was a grati graffitiartist too, is the bane of
Patty's job, and he does art onthe wall of no ghosts.
Which is the Ghostbusters logo.
Steve (24:26):
Yes.
And on you loved the effects onthe Blu-ray, huh?
Because I think that this wasshot for 3d.
Stephen (24:31):
I, it may have been,
and I don't remember.
But you know how when you'rewatching a Blu-ray on your tv,
you have the black bar at thetop and the bottom?
Well, the sparks from the protonpack or the lightning from the
prison ghost, they go out of themain part of the screen into the
black area at the top of thebottom.
And I think that's such a fun
Steve (24:52):
touch.
Yes, it certainly was.
And the video of the ghost goesviral and the media dubs the
team of the Ghostbusters totheir chagrin fame.
Debunker Martin Heis.
Bill Murray.
Bill Murray goes on to record, goes on record to dismiss the
subway.
Ghost is fake.
Which is funny cuz he's one ofthe original Ghostbusters.
Yes.
Patty decides to join the teamsince she knows how to get
(25:14):
around the city and knows all ofits history.
And she provides the team with avehicle for carrying all the
equipment.
It's a Hershey borrowed from heruncle, and it becomes the new
ecto one.
Very nice.
Now, if you were Patty, wouldyou wanna join the
Stephen (25:26):
Ghostbusters?
100%, no question withouthesitation.
Yes, please sign me up.
All right.
So what about
Steve (25:32):
you?
I, I would too.
I would, I would be like the onewho'd be like, I'll start off as
the receptionist and I'll workmy way there.
No,
Stephen (25:38):
as soon as Holtzman
later is like, okay, and so we
have these proton gloves that Ineed to do is punch the air.
Yes.
Yes, that one was
Steve (25:48):
super cool.
Would you let them turn your, your Jeep into a ecto one if
that is what, what was required?
Absolutely.
Okay.
There we go.
Now Rowan assures Mrs.
Pat Moore that the ghost growingon her back is no biggie at the
hotel where he works beforetalking to the ghosts in the
mirror.
Meanwhile, Holtzman shows offsome new equipment she made to
(26:09):
catch ghost, as you mentioned.
Yeah.
Including a new laser gun, agrenade, and a proton glove.
Ugh.
It's all untested.
So most of it turns out to bedangerous, but the team thinks
it's all cool and we agree andthey perfect it for later.
Yeah.
Stephen (26:20):
Melissa McCarthy is so
good at physical comedy and when
she uses the new proton gun outin the alley, like we were just
talking about, and she fliesaround like a deflating balloon,
it still makes me laugh everytime.
Yes.
And I keep thinking about.
Like if I were there and all ofa sudden that laser that could
kill you is flying around.
Yeah.
(26:40):
I would not have stayed to makesure she landed okay.
I would've run for my ownsafety.
Oh no.
I would've
Steve (26:46):
watched from afar.
I would've probably videorecorded it.
Stephen (26:50):
The team is called to
investigate a ghostly siding at
a heavy metal performance whereRowan is seen planting another
device in the theater.
Abby Specter detector goes offnear the dressing rooms where
she finds Rowan's device.
Patty is chased by a mannequinpossessed by a ghost, and the
Ghostbusters hit the mannequinwith their proton lasers
releasing a huge flying ghostDragon monster into the theater.
(27:14):
They follow it up to the stagewhere a band called the Beast of
Mayhem are performing.
And they don't actually soundthat harsh like I was their
song.
I was like, it's actually prettygood.
Yeah.
I wasn't mad at all.
The Ghost Dragon gargoyle thingflies out making everyone think
it's part of the show.
Like a laser light show.
Yeah.
Until the Ghostbusters rush thestage and try to hit it with
(27:35):
their lasers.
And the theater is art deco.
You can't fix that type ofthing.
Be
Steve (27:42):
more careful.
Yeah.
It doesn't go well for the, thebuilding
Stephen (27:45):
itself.
No.
Abby stage dives and goes afterit.
Patty says, I'm gonna save yousweaty freaks.
And she stage dives, but nobodycatches her.
And she goes, I don't know ifthis is a race thing or what.
But as she's getting up, she hasthe ghosts perched on her
shoulders, and the other threehave to wait for Patty to be
(28:07):
still so they can hit it withtheir lasers, hold him, and
pulls out the trap and they havethe ghost sucked into it.
Everyone cheers.
The team on while Ozzy Osborneis backstage thinking he's
having a flashback, which addsup.
Yes.
Now when Patty's investigatingand she sees the room of
mannequins, She calls it a roomfull of nightmares.
Would you have gone in thereheld to the, no.
Steve (28:29):
Yeah.
Not, no, not even a little bit.
Yeah.
Like, even though I know thatthere's probably some important
loot, shining in a little likeYeah.
Display thing right behind them.
I'm still like, I don't needthat little bit of ammo.
I will survive the night withoutit.
Thank you.
Or like, I
Stephen (28:44):
might have stood at the
door and used my laser to take
down all of the mannequins, butI, I mean, after I know what you
did last summer.
I think we all know a room fullof mannequins are not safe.
Steve (28:57):
No.
Now the team celebrates theirfirst capture with some pizza.
Abby and, and pizza was a thingin the originals, right?
Like on the show, wasn't it?
It's like we love catchingghosts and pizza or is that
Ninja Turtles?
That was Ninja Turtles.
Okay, well, whatever.
I'm getting my eighties stuffmixed up.
Abby and Erin discussed how theywere friends since high school.
Erin also mentions how when shewas a child, the ghost of her
(29:17):
mean neighbor would stand at thefoot of her bed every day for a
year.
Nobody believed her when shesaid it.
They're then visited by MartinHeist so he can prove that the
team is faking the capture.
Aaron gets annoyed and decidesto prove heists wrong by
bringing out the trap andreleasing the ghost.
The ghost flies out and pusheshim out the window as it escapes
into the city.
Stephen (29:36):
Erin really didn't
think that one through, but
after a lifetime of people notbelieving her and make fun of
her, she just reacted.
And like the whole time, I'mlike, girl, no, no.
Don't do it.
No.
Yeah.
And now he's dead.
Steve (29:51):
Yes.
Now after the police arrived, the team is escorted by Agent
Hawkins.
And Rourke to meet with MayorBradley and his assistant
Jennifer Lynch, played by CecilyStrong.
While they are thankful for theteam's capture of a ghost, they
want them to say they are fraud,so as not to cause a stir in the
city.
Now, if you learned ghosts werereal, but were told by like the
(30:11):
city or the government to keepit a secret, would you?
Nope,
Stephen (30:14):
not even a little bit.
I feel like that's one of thosethings that people have a right
to know.
Like if there were a, like if Ihad proof of aliens, I'd be like
aliens, they're over there inBradenton.
I can show you.
I'm not
Steve (30:28):
in Bradenton.
That's where I work.
Send them over somewhere elsethey give you in Tampa.
Okay.
All right.
When the team is alerted to anew ghost sighting, Aaron
realizes there's a pattern toall the appearances in the city.
It's discovered that all thedevices found are along lay
lines that intersect at theMercado Hotel.
They find a picture of the staffand Patty recognizes Rowan among
(30:48):
them, knowing he's their guy.
Patty also lets them know thatthe site of the Mercado Hotel
has been the site of horrifichappenings over a hundred years,
even before the hotel was built.
Ugh.
Now lay lines.
I know the term in the conceptfrom video game.
Yep.
Nonsense.
Do you, is it anything in yourmagical pro
Stephen (31:06):
practices?
Yeah, it really is totally athing.
Like if you look at maps of laylines Allegedly they cross at
the Bermuda Triangle and someother different places.
I absolutely believe they're athing, and I think it's similar
to the energy vortex that wehave here in Sarasota.
That is very much definitely athing with our, also our magic
(31:29):
protection hurricane
Steve (31:30):
bubble.
There we go.
Now the team heads to the hoteland finds Rowan in the basement
with a device he built in whichhe plans to release a hoarded
ghost unto the city to pesterpeople to death as payback for
being constantly mistreated.
Abby tries to convince Rowan tostop his plans, but then she
mentions the police are on theirway and he freaks and jumps to
his next phase of his plan.
(31:51):
He grabs the two pillars andelectrocutes himself before the
police arrive.
After his death, Holzman turnsoff the machine and they believe
they averted the disaster.
But wait, it's too soon.
In the movie, Jennifer, themayor's assistant, thanks them
on behalf of the city quietlybefore fake arresting them and
saying they realtor towed theircar.
Their image doesn't improveeither.
(32:11):
After Aaron punched a guy whohad it coming for calling her
ghost girl a fraud and that sheneeded more therapy.
Meanwhile, with the basementclosed off, the specter detector
is left behind and goes haywire.
Oh, now I was surprised thatRowan died quickly at
Stephen (32:25):
first, so I was as well
because he seemed like he was
gonna be the main villain beforethe ghosts came along.
Like Peter McNichol, that's onAlly Mcbe.
Was the main human villainhelping out vial lathen in
(32:47):
Ghostbusters two.
So I kind of figured that's whatRowan was gonna do.
So I was kind of shocked when hedied.
He also, he was
Steve (32:54):
shocked too.
Stephen (32:57):
He definitely does not
know the definition
Steve (32:59):
of the word pester.
No, not at all.
And you added a little note.
Yeah.
Annie
Stephen (33:04):
pops from the original
Ghostbuster movies was the
receptionist of the hotel.
Similar to how she was areceptionist for the
Ghostbusters and how in thismovie she goes, Mercado Hotel,
what do you want?
She would say, Ghostbusters, what do you want?
Steve (33:19):
There you go.
Now at home, Erin reads througha copy of her book that Rowan
was keeping to orchestrate hisplan.
She looks through the drawingsand sees that he had always
planned to electrocute himselfso that he become a ghost.
And eventually bring about thefourth cataclysm to lead the
ghosted terrorize the world fromthe other side.
Stephen (33:37):
See, what I'm seeing
though, is he was truly a fan of
her work and I think that partgets overlooked.
Steve (33:44):
And also that he's a, not
an all-star graphic artist, but
he's a pretty good, absolutelyillustrator.
He could definitely make his owncomics.
Stephen (33:51):
I 100%.
That's some great original art.
Yes.
At headquarters, Abby hears aknocking at the door, but no one
is there.
And then there's a rattling onthe sinks pipes after she hides
herself in the bathroom and shesees a green glow in the drain.
Rowan's ghost then possessesAbby, and the worst part is the
ooze coming from her nose andears.
She starts breaking holzman'sequipment and then grabs
(34:14):
holtzman by the throat to dangleher out the window.
Patty intervenes and rescuesHoltman holtzman before she
bitch slaps her own out of Abbybecause the power of Patty
compels you to leave her friend.
Moments later, Kevin pulls up onhis motorcycle and Rowan
possesses him and rides off backto the
Steve (34:32):
hotel.
Yes.
Now, in terms of options topossess, Chris Hemsworth is not
a bad option, but if you were aghost, who would you want to
possess most out of those five?
No, just out of anyone ever.
Any go.
Any and he, any living humanthat you would wanna possess?
Stephen (34:50):
Okay, so for purely
evil reasons, Uhhuh Trump, just
to get in front of all thecameras and start like admitting
to so many things and.
I
Steve (35:05):
think that would be
funny.
Yeah.
Mine was gonna be more likegoing into a sex thing
direction, so just, we have verydifferent ideas of how to use
this opportunity, so we willjust leave it there.
I was trying to
Stephen (35:16):
help the
Steve (35:16):
world.
I was like, whose body do I wantto just masturbate with all day
long?
Stephen (35:22):
Yeah.
I was going for the helping theworld.
Okay, there you go.
Now Erin runs to a restaurantwhere she finds Mayor Bradley.
And Lynch eating.
She frantically tries to warnthem to evacuate the city and
turn off the power, but shecomes off as crazy and she's
taken away.
He's so like the mayor in Jaw.
Steve (35:41):
Oh, totally.
Now Rowan in Kevin's body makesit to the hotel basement and
attacks the two guards standingoutside.
He manages to break thebarriers, keeping the ghosts
trapped to allow them to flyfree, beginning the ghost
invasion upon the city.
A portal opens in the sky, releasing more and more ghosts
upon the city.
Aaron tries to get a cab, butthe cabby, Dan Akroyd that mis
(36:02):
dismisses her and drives offtelling her, I ain't afraid to
know Ghost.
Which is funny because heco-created Ghostbusters and that
was part of the theme song.
Yes.
Stephen (36:11):
And after seeing all
the originals, it does make me
wish that this was connected tothe original timeline and that
they had made cameos as theircharacters.
I don't need them to be thestars of the movie.
But yeah, I do fully admit itwas nice to see them as cameo
was in this no matter
Steve (36:29):
what.
Correct.
Now Abby Holtzman and Patty gearup and head off to fight the
ghost.
There's a whole bunch of actionnext.
No, just kidding.
They run into none other thanSlimer the Green Ghost eating
from a hotdog cart.
He seals the Okta one and drivesoff to find his misses.
Abby and Patty get ready toshoot at the car.
But Holtzman says the equipmenton top of the car is basically a
(36:51):
nuke and definitely won.
Can come back into play later.
Yeah.
They then spot a bunch of ghoststhat look like giant Macy's day
parade floats, which they startpopping with their proton packs,
which was so cool.
It was.
And the last one, wa, was afloat in the shape of the stay
puff marshmallow man, whichwe'll know from the first movie.
Yep.
Rolls on the three, renderingthem immobile, and Aaron saves
(37:12):
them by popping him with a Swissarmy knife that Holtzman gave
her.
The team then faces off againstdozens of ghosts, including
Gertrude, the subway ghost inthe theater ghost, and it is
magnificent.
Yeah, I mean, these scenesclearly seem to be where most of
the budget went.
Was it worth it?
100%.
Stephen (37:28):
Totally worth it.
The weapons in this movie are somuch cooler than just the basic
proton packs.
Mm-hmm.
Of the original.
The proton gloves, the ghostchipper?
Yes.
I mean, in the original it wasall about using the things and
capturing the ghosts.
And this one, they can destroythe spectral energy and the
spirits.
It makes for much moreinteresting battles, like it's
(37:49):
not even close.
This is so significantly coolerthan the
Steve (37:53):
original.
Yes, I agree.
And the Ghostbusters head to thehotel to find us Still possess
Kevin having frozen the policein military after a dance mob.
Yay for
Stephen (38:02):
the flash mob dancing.
It was
Steve (38:04):
fantastic.
Yes, Rowan leaves Chris Kevin'sbody and decides to take on a
more familiar, friendly form.
The Ghostbusters, however, itquickly grows into a humongous,
gross, scary beast that burstout of the hotel and begins
wrecking havoc on the city.
Crossing their streams doesn'tshut down the vortex, which is
weird cuz it always works whenwe pee together.
(38:28):
But they see Slimer, his missesand other ghost riding down the
street Street.
So the team gets the idea to hitthe ecto ones nuclear reactor
into the portals for reverse itand actually close it.
They fire their lasers that theghosts have them steer in before
hitting their reactor.
It works and the ghosts startgetting pulled back into the
portal.
Rowan holds onto two buildings,so the team hits him in the
(38:49):
groin with their lasers toloosen his grip.
He starts to get sucked in, buthe grabs Abby and pulls her into
the portal.
Aaron hooks herself up to thewire and jumped into the portal
firing her laser at Rowan's handto release Abby, and she grabs
her while he's pulled into theabyss Holtzman, and Patty pulled
the two out and they return withtotally bleached white hair to
(39:10):
show for it.
Yes.
Thoughts on the
Stephen (39:12):
climax?
A the white hair totally worksfor Abby.
Melissa McCarthy Looks greatwith it, so now I can't wait to
see her as Ursula.
Yes.
B that was a great climax.
It was exciting.
It stayed true to the storylineof the two and their friendship
and how they've healed thingsand the special effects in this
movie have been truly amazing.
(39:33):
The color schemes, everything.
It was done so well.
Yes.
Steve (39:38):
Nothing like a satisfying
climax.
Now I see what you did there.
Thank you.
Now afterwards, mayor Bradleycontinues to deny the ghost
problem, but secretly gives theteam funding to continue their
work.
They upgrade their headquartersto the firehouse from the
original movie.
Patty's Uncle Bill ends up beingErnie Hudson, who pulls in our
new hearse.
He's not happy about whathappened to the other one.
(40:00):
I love that
Stephen (40:01):
they upgraded to the
firehouse, and you know that
Holtzman and Abby are gonna havea blast sliding down the fire
pole.
Steve (40:07):
Oh, for sure.
Now during the credits, we seethe team being visited by
Holzman's Mentor, Rebecca Gorin.
Sigourney Weer, yes.
Who's who inspired her to becrazy and I love her for it.
Yeah.
Patty then calls the team to theroof.
The city's buildings are lit upsaying, I love GB and other,
yay.
Thank you Ghostbusters.
Yes.
(40:27):
There's also a dedication at theend of the movie to to Harold
Remus.
Stephen (40:31):
Ugh.
I was so like all the wholemovie.
I was like, come on, SigourneyWeaver.
She has to be there.
She has to be there.
And so I was very happy shefinally
Steve (40:39):
showed up.
Yes, and after their credit, theteam is doing work.
While Patty is listening to arecording, Aaron walks over to
see what's up.
Patty simply asks, what's Zul?
And because I have the memory ofa Phish,
Stephen (40:51):
Zul was one of the main
villains
Steve (40:54):
from the first song.
From the first movie.
Stephen (40:56):
Okay.
No, Dana, only
Steve (40:59):
Zul.
There you go.
Now, thoughts on the ending?
Stephen (41:03):
I like the callback to
the original movie.
I think it's fantastic.
And I do wish we would've gottena sequel to these amazing women.
Steve (41:11):
Well, we do get a sequel
to the Ghostbusters.
It was actually rebooted againwith the original group in
Ghostbusters Afterlife, whichcame out two years ago.
But we haven't seen it yetbecause you hate Ghostbusters.
Stephen (41:23):
I do not hate
Ghostbusters.
But N we are right.
We have not seen it, but
Steve (41:26):
we need to.
Sure, we think, I don't know, listeners, tell us what you
think of this episode and if weshould tune in to Ghostbusters
Afterlife.
You could do that by emailing usto happy life pod gmail.com or
Stephen (41:37):

Steve (41:44):
