When considering the advantage of listening more than speaking, there’s an old saying: “I don’t learn anything…while I’m talking.”
In other words, we learn when we listen, not when we speak.
And I happen to believe that’s wonderful advice…in general.
However, I’d like to explore something that may at first seem rather counterintuitive.
It seems that while we are speaking — *if/when we stay conscious of what we’re saying* — we actually CAN learn while we speak.
Key Point: As we listen to/observe what we ourselves are saying, we can take in this information and utilize it as a guide to determine whether we are on the right track…or whether a “course correction” is needed.
We can even replay our words later to ourselves in order to determine the same.
Powerful Thought: I often quote or paraphrase the iconic author, Joan Didion, who famously said, “I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.”
Of course, there are also those people who say something, and then believe it…because they said it! ;-)
That’s not what we’re talking about here.
While I’ll still suggest that indeed we should think *before* we speak, let’s also observe what we say when we do speak.
The insights into ourselves can be enlightening!
Today’s Exercise: Ready to practice this? Yes, think first before you speak. However, when you do speak, be aware and review afterward.
