The time swiftly approaches when Laidley and Merrik will sail for Siness. Though the newly crowned king is grateful for the numbers added to their army, he is wary of them and concerned with their ties to Merrik. After a secret meeting leaves the Captain of Guard with new tools at his disposal, his confidence in himself and his contempt of Laidley only grows. From now on, everything will be different.

Seeking solace, Luella flees from Altaine castle after learning of all the meticulous planning that went into the murder of her father. Though she aims to spend her night away from all the people and the chatter that is life in a high kingdom, she finds herself under the stars with two unlikely companions. Friendships bloom, and bonds begin to form where she had not expected to find them before.
