and systems in our industry.

(00:43):
advice to help you thrive in theworld of hair.
This is all about hair.
Well, hey there, it's sowonderful to have you join us
once again for another excitingepisode.
Today we're talking about athought-provoking subject that
might have you re-evaluatingsome of your leadership
(01:03):
strategies.
Yeah, so know those momentswhen you find yourself
scratching your head andwondering why your salon or your
spa is not performing or isn'tfiring on all cylinders?
Well, get ready to have thoselight bulb moments, or at least
that's what I like to call them, because we're talking about
consequences and systems.
Yeah, not real sexy.
(01:25):
It's not a sexy subject, buthow does your salon or your spa
operate, with consequences?
Look, we all have big dreamsfor our teams and our businesses
, right?
We think about outstandingcustomer service, a team that
works in harmony and resultsthat leave our clients wanting
(01:45):
to come back for more, right?
But here's the thing achievingthose dreams takes more than
just good intentions.
Sometimes you could wing it,but most of the time it's about
having the right tools in yourleadership toolbox, am I right?
Well, that's where we're goingto begin.
Picture this you have a toolboxand it's brimming with all kinds
(02:07):
of various tools.
And you know me, I like mytools, I love to create things.
Some tools are flashy andattractive and you go out and
you buy the new thing and itpromises quick fixes.
You know?
Well, these are theconsequences we often resort to
when we encounter performancehiccups.
You know those, do this.
Or else tactics, but guess what?
(02:32):
Do those even work?
I mean, the outcome might notbe what we hope for.
And in today's world, you know,if you're just pouring out the
consequences, you're going tohave people leaving you left and
right.
Just pouring out theconsequences, you're going to
have people leaving you left andright.
So fact number one consequencesoften breed that infamous I'll
(02:54):
do just enough to get byattitude and who wants mediocre
performances?
Right, but it also might leadyou to not having a team at all.
Yeah, that's right.
If you're just throwing outpunches every time they come in
late and you're, you know, handing down the gavel, yeah,
it's not going to work for you.
(03:16):
Okay, let's look at fact numbertwo.
This is a real eye-opener.
Consequences rarely inspirethat fire within our teams to go
above and beyond.
Yeah, sure, they might lead tocompliance, but they won't get
your team pumped up to reach forthe stars.
And that's what we all want, right?
(03:37):
Imagine wanting your team toplay hard and win, but offering
them just a mere slap on thewrist when they stumble.
That doesn't quite align, doesit?
Now, here's where it getsinteresting.
Picture a different set oftools in that leadership toolbox
.
These are the systems, yepsystems, and each system is like
(04:03):
a carefully crafted roadmapdesigned to lead us to a
specific destination, and thisdestination is consistent
excellence and growth.
Yeah, think about it.
If you're aiming to skyrocketyour pre-book rates, you need a
systematic approach to make thathappen.
You don't just show up and say, okay, I need everybody to
(04:26):
pre-book today.
Holidays are around the corner.
No, that's not how it works.
You have to have a system inplace and make sure that
everybody on your team knowswhat is expected and knows what
the system is, and I guaranteeyou, once you get everyone
(04:46):
trained on that system ofpre-booking or whatever it is
the system is, you will haveexcellence.
You will have consistent growth.
Here's another system that Ilike to always hit upon
consultations with clients.
This is a critical moment wherewe need a system in place to
(05:08):
ensure top-notch service.
So often I talk to clients andmost clients think that they're
not receiving a consultation andmost stylists think they're
giving a consultation.
But you know, most of us, orI've seen, if you, if you don't
have a system in place, you juststand behind the chair and go
(05:31):
okay, what are we doing today?
Okay, great, let's go getshampooed.
That is not a system and thatis definitely not a consultation
.
So if you don't have a systemfor your consultation, it's a
good place to start.
Believe me, go listen to mypodcast, episode 133, on our
five-step consultation, and thiswill give you some guidance on
(05:54):
how to at least get started, andit's really, really simple.
So systems aren't just about theprocesses, though.
They're about shaping thebehavior, the performance and,
ultimately, the whole culture ofyour salon.
But hold on, don't toss outconsequences entirely.
You have to have them, and theydo have their place.
So your employee handbookshould lay out all the rules,
(06:18):
and the rule violationsnaturally come with consequences
.
Like you wouldn't want somebodyto show up, you know drunk,
there needs to be a consequenceto that right.
However, here's the kickerConsequences shouldn't be the
cornerstone of your leadershipapproach.
They're kind of like theseasoning A little bit goes a
long way, but too much can spoilthe whole dish.
(06:40):
You know, I've heard it said ifyou don't like the results
you're getting, change it ortweak the system.
So here's your challenge Take alook at your leadership toolbox
.
Yeah, are you?
Are your shelves overflowingwith just consequences, or do
you have a diverse array ofsystems in place, ready to
(07:04):
create the outcomes you dream of?

(07:49):
just about tools, they're aboutleadership.
They require careful design, nurturing, training and a whole
lot of coaching.
And guess what?
Engaged leadership is thesecret sauce that no consequence
can ever replace.
