(00:25):
advice to help you thrive in theworld of hair.
This is all about hair.
Hey there, and welcome back toanother podcast.
Today we're going to be talkingabout hair loss.
I don't know why it is, butlately I've been having a lot of
conversation with women abouthair loss and that it really

(00:48):
does affect them and theirself-identity.
Now, I don't know why theconversation keeps coming up
more and more.
For me, Maybe it's the age ofthe women that I hang with.
I don't know if that happens, because it's true, hormones play
a huge, a huge part in losingyour hair and and it's kind of

(01:11):
sad because hair has always been, you know part of your self
identity it it's actually asymbol of beauty.
You know, when you have a thick, luscious hair, it makes you
feel good.
That's why they say there'snothing like uh, you know, when
your hair looks good, you feelgood.
Right, good hair days, thingslike that, but hair loss when

(01:32):
you're experiencing it, it'svery, very stressful and heck.
Stress causes hair loss and itaffects so many people worldwide
, I mean.
And there's so many reasonsthat you lose your hair.
One of those reasons, like Ijust said, was is stress,
especially in women and again,we see our hair as an expression

(01:58):
of our beauty and and you knowour youth.
And when you have a lot ofstress and it's intensified by
society or what's going on insociety or media, and you start
losing your hair because ofhormones, things like that too,

(02:21):
it leads to low self-esteem.
It leads to low self-esteem.
It leads to low self-esteem andif it occurs in younger years,
it can it really does affectyour self-esteem.
So let's talk about a few thingswhat causes hair loss, what you

(02:43):
can do about it?
Maybe we'll touch on that, butreally today I want to talk
about your shampoo, because haveyou thought about that that
maybe just your shampoo aloneand what you're using to shampoo
your hair might be causing yourhair loss?
Have you thought about I justhad this conversation this

(03:04):
weekend with my mother-in-lawthat, hello, you might be making
the situation worse by usingcertain shampoos that are out
there because they're cheap.
They're affordable, um, andpeople don't want to spend $60
on a shampoo.
I don't blame them.
Things are expensive these days.

(03:26):
However, if you're spending $3on a shampoo, I mean, let's face
it, you got to have shampoo, you got to shampoo your hair.
It's not something you justcan't do, and so you need to buy
shampoo, and most people thinkthat shampoo just cleans your
hair right?
Well, it does.
Most people think that shampoojust cleans your hair right?
Well, it does.
However, there are someingredients in the cheaper

(03:47):
products that actually can causehair loss, and so today I want
to talk about the ingredientsthat can contribute to hair loss
.
I want to then talk about, maybe, ingredients that to look
for that are good for you, andwhat you can do.
So, first and foremost, you'veprobably heard of sulfates, so

(04:13):
what we're going to do is we'regoing to talk about the
ingredient, what they are, whythey're a problem to be in your
shampoo.
Okay, so sulfates is thecleaning agent that's commonly
found in most shampoos.
They help to remove dirt, theoil, the product buildup from
the scalp, and many people, manypeople, many manufacturers they

(04:41):
use sulfates because they giveyou that rich lather, you know,
and, in our eyes, the morebubbles, the better cleaning,
right?
Well, not, that's not the case.
But people associate the morethe more it lathers, that is
cleaning more.
There's some wonderful shampoosout there that don't lather

(05:02):
very much at all because theydon't contain any sulfates.
The trick is, sometimes youjust have to add a little bit
more water to get that slippageand that the bubbles that you're
so used to, but you can have areally great shampoo and it
doesn't lather at all, causereally what shampoos are doing
is cleaning your scalp and yourhair.
So why is why are sulfates sobad for you?

(05:27):
People ask me that a lot.
What's a big deal?
Well, it's because they're sostrong of a detergent that they
can strip the hair and the scalpof their natural oils, and what
happens is this can lead toextreme dryness.
What happens is this can leadto extreme dryness, irritation

(05:49):
on the scalp, inflammation ofthe scalp, and this creates an
environment that's like lessconducive to healthy hair growth
, and if your scalp's nothealthy, it's really hard to
have healthy hair growth.
So if you have sensitive skin, sulfates can really cause some
scalp irritation and that mightactually, because the
inflammation, contribute to hairloss over time.

(06:11):
The inflammation.
What happens is, if your scalpis inflamed, it actually
inflames your hair follicle, thehole where your hair grows out
of, and it can suffocate thehair bulb and then you won't
have hair growth.
So if you're sensitive, if youhave sensitive skin on the rest

(06:32):
of your body, you might besensitive sulfates as well, and
you just don't know it becauseyou haven't tried anything else.
So, um, if you've everexperienced like extreme dryness
and your scalp feels really Idon't know dry after your
shampoo, it could be sulfates inyour shampoo.

(06:59):
Shampoos are sodium laurylsulfate my SLS and sodium lauryl
sulfate S-L-E-S those are theabbreviations of them.
So look for those.
Those are usually the mainculprit.
You want to use a shampoo thatsays sulfate free, for sure, for

(07:20):
sure, number one.
Okay, now let's talk aboutparabens.
So parabens are actually usedas a preservative in a lot of
products, including shampoos, and it helps prevent bacteria
from growing and it helps the uhprolong the shelf life, if you
will.
Um, common parabens and forgiveme if I slaughter these are

(07:47):
methylparaben, ethylparaben andpropylparaben.
So those are the ones that youwant to look for.
And why are they so bad for you?
Well, they can actually affectyour normal function of your
hormone system, in both malesand females, and this can

(08:08):
actually lead to hair loss.
Usually, the concentration ofparabens is pretty low in
shampoos.
However, because you use them, maybe daily, every other day the
prolonged exposure to theseparabens over your life, it can
actually build up in the bodyand it actually can increase the

(08:31):
risk of hormonal disruption.
Have you even thought aboutthat?
Because you know it actuallybleeds into your scalp, but your
skin absorbs it and it can alsocause scalp irritation and,
again, just like what I said, scalp irritation can lead to
hair loss in sensitive people.
Okay, let's move on to silicones.

(08:51):
Silicones, um, well, these aresynthetic ingredients and so
they're they're made in afactory and they're usually in
shampoos and conditionersbecause they help to make your
hair look shiny and smooth.
That's what they're used for.

(09:12):
They actually form a protectivecoating around each strand, so
it helps to lock in the moistureand reduces frizz.
Okay, there is one brand inparticular that uses a lot of
silicones.
I'm not going to mention brands, but after a while, um, they
can um, stay if you keep usingit, this product and it has

(09:45):
silicones in it.
It builds up on each of yourstrands.
We used to do videos where youcan scrape this off of
individual strands of hair.
So you know, the first coupleof times you use these products,
your hair looks shiny andsmooth and all that, and you use
them more and more and it'slike, why aren't they working
anymore?
They actually are just buildingup on the hair.
So be careful with silicones.
There are some good silicones, but here's the bad ones.
The sodium chloride that's asilicone that can actually dry

(10:09):
out your hair and scalp, eventhough it's making your hair
look shiny, and it strips awaythe natural oils that protects
your scalp.
Um, so what happens then?
Sometimes it can, becauseyou've just dried out your scalp
.
Your scalp thinks it's dry, soit produces more oils, so it
makes more oil on your scalpsometimes, and then you have

(10:34):
oilier hair.
Then you're shampooing moreoften, which just compounds the
problem.
You see how this works.
So the silicones can actually, because it's drying the scalp,
it can actually make your hairmore susceptible to damage,
breakage and thinning.
I know, goodness gosh, you thinkyou're doing a good thing and

(10:57):
nope, okay, another ingredientthat you want to look out for
sodium chloride.
This is actual just table salt.
Yeah, it's actually added toshampoos as a thickening agent
because it's so cheap to use andit improves the texture and the

(11:20):
consistency of the shampoo.
Um, manufacturers put it inthere, but it serves no purpose
for your hair at all.
It just is a thickening agentbecause people are so used to
when they squeeze out theirshampoo in their hand that it
has a certain what is that word?
You know it feels, you know acertain way, and so if it just

(11:44):
pours out like water, you'reprobably not going to use it.
So they put in sodium chloride, which this can be really drying
to your scalp and your hair, because it strips the natural
oils and it leads to dryness andyour hair will get brittle.
You know, sometimes people saywhy does my hair feel like straw

(12:04):
?
Well, sometimes it's theshampoo you're using.
So this can lead to damage, breakage, hair thinning and it
can contribute to hair loss.
Okay, sodium chloride.
Then you want to look out foralcohols.
Now there's a big, broadcategory.

(12:27):
Okay, because there's.
They're used for so manydifferent purposes.
So, alcohols it could be usedas a solvent, a preservative, or
it could be how you get yourfragrance into your shampoo.
So not all alcohols are bad foryour hair, like soterial
alcohol and sterile alcohol, butcertain types, such as

(12:50):
isopropyl alcohol and ethanol, are really drying for your hair.
They can strip your scalp andyour hair of the natural
moisture and it leads to dryness, brittleness and breakage, and
over time, this can reallyweaken your hair shaft and make
it more prone to split ends andbreakage.

(13:12):
Thus it does cause hair loss.
So, uh, I know a lot of the theless expensive shampoos that are
out there that make your hairsqueaky clean.
Um, my husband's one of thosethat really love that feeling.
They have a lot of alcohols inthem and it actually does.

(13:33):
Yes, yes, and you know, afteryou first shampoo your hair,
yeah, your scalp, your hair, feels squeaky clean, which it
should never feel squeaky clean, but then it gets oilier because
you've just stripped your scalpand your hair of all of the
moisture, and so it'scompounding the problem.

(13:54):
He won't listen to me.
He likes that feeling, butthat's probably why he's losing
his hair.
Okay, let's move on to syntheticfragrances and colors.
So we all love a good smellingshampoo.
I don't know about you, butwhen I was growing up, um, flex
shampoo, oh my gosh, I couldstill just saying it.

(14:17):
I could smell it.
I don't even know if they makeflex shampoo anymore.
But oh, I loved that smell.
I could probably guarantee youthat it was not good for your
hair.
Um, there's another smell thatcomes to mind.
What was that?
Apple pectin shampoo?
Oh, my goodness.
Um, let's see there was.
Uh, what purge shampoo actuallyhad a really clean smell.

(14:42):
You know these are smells thatthey just come to mind when,
when you're thinking.
But you know you gotta be realcautious of heavily fragranced
shampoos, because they'reusually created by a blend of
chemicals.
Some of them can be prettyharmful to like artificial

(15:03):
colors, and they're usuallyderived from petroleum-based
ingredients which can cause bigtime irritation to your hair and
your scalp scalp.

(15:25):
So why?
I would probably look forshampoos that have well, that
don't have added fragrance in it.
I know the ones that I use.
They don't have addedfragrances, because these
chemicals can cause allergicreactions.
They can also cause irritationand inflammation of the scalp
reactions.
They can also cause irritationand inflammation of the scalp.
Goodness, this inflammation ofthe scalp, chronic inflammation
in your body of any sort, cancause so many problems.
But if we're just talking abouthair loss, think about it.

(15:48):
If your scalp is irritated andinflamed, it is going to
suffocate your hair follicle andyour hair will fall out.
It can't be good for you, andif you have sensitive skin of
any kind, it's probably going tobe worse on your scalp.
So it could potentially lead tohair loss.

(16:08):
And guess what?
Synthetic fragrances that theycreate in a factory can also
disrupt your hormonal balance, again contributing to hair loss,
because the hormones in yourbody really does affect hair
loss, I know.
So what are those ingredients?

(16:29):
Again, let's break them down,so you and I'll put them in the
show notes too.
So you want to make sure?
Sulfates, parabens, silicones, sodium chloride, alcohols and
synthetic fragrances Okay, Iwant to make sure.
Oh, just a side note on sodiumchloride that is the one

(16:53):
ingredient you don't want to useon your hair.
If you have like a Brazilianblowout on your hair, cause
that'll strip that puppy outovernight, just FYI, All right.
What about some ingredients thatare good for your hair growth?
I know I've made a couple ofvideos on this on my YouTube
channel, but let's just talk.
Break it down right now.

(17:14):
Um, here, biotin.
But let's just break it downright now.
Here Biotin, which is actuallya vitamin B7, it actually does
play a crucial role in healthyhair, skin and nails.
It helps to strengthen the hairshaft, reduces hair breakage
and it promotes a thickergrowing hair because it helps to

(17:36):
support keratin, which is thekey protein that makes up the
structure of the hair.
So you can either take a biotinvitamin as a supplement, but
you can also get biotin richshampoos.
This can help improve your hairstrength and reduce thinning.
So the next time you see biotinin the ingredient list on the

(17:59):
shampoo bottle, you should knowexactly what it does for your
hair.
Okay, another ingredient tomaybe to look for is tea tree
oil, and it's actually known forits dandruff clearing abilities
.
Uh, it's actually in a, anatural essential oil, and it

(18:19):
has powerful antifungal andantibacterial properties.
It's commonly used in shampoosdesigned to treat scalp
conditions like dandruff anddermatitis, but it also helps to
unclog hair follicles andpromote the health of, promote
the growth of healthy hair.

(18:40):
So if you've been in the pastusing shampoos that weren't very
good, maybe try one that hastea tree oil in it to help
unclog your hair follicles.
Or if you're using cheap um, Idon't want to say cheap, but but
most inexpensive products outthere, they don't use quality

(19:03):
ingredients.
Come on, they can't or theycouldn't charge what they charge
.
That's why when you're goinginto your hair salon and you
have a bottle of shampoo andyou're like, wow, I don't want
to spend that much.
Well, first of all, look at theingredient list.
That's why we're going over allof this.
And if hair is a priority to you, then you want to use good,

(19:27):
quality ingredients on yourscalp.
And your scalp does absorb allthese things into it, which
affects the rest of your bodyand your health.
So think of it that way.
And most of the, the, thequality luxury brands you use so
little.
They're so concentrated and Iknow people say that all the
time, but really, truly, myshampoo lasts probably I don't

(19:50):
know four months, five months inthe shower, I don't know, um,
but you only use like the sizeof a dime and and I don't
shampoo my hair every day, but,um, think about it you want to
use quality, quality products onyour scalp.
Okay, moving on to number three, product ingredient that's good

(20:10):
for your hair niacin, which is avitamin B3.
This actually helps to supportcirculation and it plays a huge
role in the health of your skinand your hair.
So niacin helps to improveblood circulation to the scalp,
which ensures that the hairfollicles receive the necessary
nutrients and oxygen to thrive.

(20:32):
So a lot of you know likethickening shampoos or shampoos
for thinning hair.
They probably have niacin inthem, all right?
Another ingredient saw palmetto.
This is a natural extractderived from the fruit of the
serineua repens plant.

(20:54):
Sorry, I'm reading this sonever heard of that.
It's commonly used in hair careproducts designed to prevent
hair loss and support hairgrowth.
It inhibits the production ofDHT, which is a hormone linked
to hair loss, and if you don'tknow what that's all about, I do
have a video on my YouTubechannel and I talk all about it.

(21:17):
Go look up my video that talksabout hair loss, and I actually
have graphs and images to showyou how DHT actually goes over
and doesn't.
It's not a good thing.
So you do want to halt theproduction of DHT, and this
happens in everybody's hair.
Uh, you get to a certain ageand it's testosterone that is um

(21:40):
producing this, or lowtestosterone.
So the lower your testosterone, you produce more dht that is
linked to hair loss.
So, yeah, it's all connectedanyway.
So salt palmetto is oneingredient you want to look for
to help prevent hair loss andsupport hair growth.

(22:01):
Caffeine caffeine is awell-known stimulant found in
coffee and tea, but it's alsoincluded shampoos and hair
treatments to to promote hairgrowth.
Isn't that funny?
It stimulates the hairfollicles, increases blood flow
to the scalp and it counteractsthe effects of dht.
Aloe vera aloe vera can be Ilove me some aloe vera, but it

(22:25):
can be found in many shampoosand hair products and it soothes
and hydrates the scalp, reducesirritation and it promotes a
healthy environment for hairgrowth, which we all should have
.
That's the.
That's the goal a healthyenvironment.
All right, let's talk aboutpeppermint oil.
This is an essential oil andit's known for its scent and its

(22:48):
cooling sensation, and it'soften included in hair care
products for its scalpstimulating properties, because
it helps to increase the bloodflow to the scalp, it stimulates
the hair follicles and itpromotes growth.
Peppermint oil rosemaryrosemary oil is another
essential oil with a longhistory of use in traditional

(23:11):
medicine, so it helps to improvecirculation, it stimulates hair
follicles and it encourages newhair growth.
Argan oil is another oil and itis essential fatty acids and
antioxidants and it helpsprovide deep hydration and
reduces hair breakage.

(23:32):
Argan oil also helps to repairdamaged hair and improve its
overall strength and elasticity, which can help reduce hair loss
due to breakage.
I use this phenomenalbeautifying serum that has argan
oil in it.
It's fabulous.
You can use it on your skin, your hair, everywhere.
Love it, but get yourself someargan oil.

(23:54):
Hyaluronic acid is anotheringredient you want to look for,
and why?
Because it's a powerfulhumectant that can hold up to a
thousand times its weight inwater.
I love it on my skin, but it'salso great for your hair because
it helps retain moisture in thescalp and the hair and it keeps

(24:17):
them hydrated and helps reducebreakage.
Lots of great ingredients there,so here's some tips for
choosing the right shampoo.
Okay, because have you been tothe drug store lately and gone
down the shampoo aisle?
It is challenging.
I don't know how y'all do it.
I mean, I, I, I am a very, veryloyal following of my brand

(24:41):
that I use, and so I don'treally go out and experiment
with other brands because Ireally love what I use, which is
the Euphora products, andanybody who knows me knows that.
Uh, but if you're just out atthe drugstore and you don't know
what to choose, it is superchallenging.
There's just so many.

(25:02):
Um, so maybe take thisingredient list and just try to
avoid the ingredients that cancontribute to hair loss, and
here's some tips that maybe youcan follow.
First and foremost, read thelabel.
Check the ingredient list, for, like the harmful chemicals,
like the sulfates, the parabensand silicones you want to make

(25:25):
sure that the label sayssulfate-free, paraben-free and
silicone-free.
First and foremost, don't evenpick up a product that doesn't
say those three things.
And you might want to chooseproducts that say natural or
organic on them, because they'reless likely to contain the

(25:48):
harmful chemicals Not all ofthem but look for products with
plant-based ingredients andessential oils known for their
hair friendly properties, likewhat we were talking about.
And then also focus on your hairtype, you know.
Select a shampoo specificallyformulated for your hair type
and your concerns, such asmoisturizing shampoos for dry

(26:10):
hair or volumizing shampoos forfine hair.
They actually have shampoos forcurly hair.
They have shampoos for frizzyhair.
If you have a challenge, theyhave a shampoo for it.
I guarantee you Okay.
Also, if you have a sensitivescalp, do a patch test before
you use your new shampoo, justto make sure that you're

(26:32):
checking that you don't have abad reaction.
So what you can do is you couldtake a little dab on your
finger and place it right behindyour ear and let it sit.
You know, rub it in like alotion and don't rinse it and
leave it there, usually 24 hours.
I know kind of weird to leave alittle soap behind your ear,

(26:53):
but you want it.
You're just testing for yoursensitivity, especially if you
have sensitive skin.
And then you also want to lookfor beneficial ingredients, like
we were talking about, like, uh, biotin, salt, palmetto and
essential oils.
So, uh, you know those arebonus points if they have those
in there.
But always remember this too.

(27:16):
I mean, shampoo is is huge andthe conversations that just keep
coming up.
I know this is a concern with alot of people, and but if you
yourself are experiencing hairloss or scalp issues, it's super
, super important to consultyour dermatologist.
Okay, they can providepersonalized recommendations and

(27:38):
suggest treatments tailored toyour specific needs, especially
if you're, um, uh, experiencingalopecia or anything like that.
And your hairstylist wouldprobably be the first person you
would talk to, because usuallyif you have any concerns with
your hair, you're going to talkto them and also, your

(27:59):
hairstylist is in there.
She could see your scalp.
She can tell if your hair isthinning, especially if it's
thinning in spots.
Hopefully she'll.
She'll be telling you this.
Uh, you know, there's many timesthat, uh, that's happened with
me, with someone sitting in mychair that wow your hair,

(28:21):
especially in a spot, so withalopecia, and, and maybe they
don't know it.
You know, I remember when I wasgoing through alopecia I didn't
know it.
My daughter pointed it out whenI was sitting on it.
She was like, oh my gosh, mom, what is this?
And it was a big old bald spot.
Didn't even know it because itwas in the back of my head.
I'm not looking back there.
So, anyway, talk to yourhairstylist, talk to a

(28:44):
dermatologist and just rememberthat.
You know, just take the time tochoose the right shampoo and
this can really improve theoverall health and appearance of
your hair.
Sometimes we don't think aboutthat.
We think shampoo is justcleaning our hair, but it really
is doing more than that.
Your hair care routine is justas important to your overall
wellness as exercise, asskincare.

(29:07):
So you want to invest inproducts that help with your
long-term health of your hairand scalp.
And, yeah, if that meansspending a little bit more
upfront, then spend a little bitmore upfront.
Listen to your hairstylist.
They're not just sitting theretrying to sell you expensive
shampoo.
More than likely they have ashampoo.

(29:29):
That will help you.
Uh, maybe get a little bit moreinformation, maybe, uh, if, if
I just know that hairstylistsare not out trying to sell you
BS, okay, so uh, but a lot ofpeople do ask me, why do
shampoos cost so much?
And it's because a good shampoouses quality ingredients that

(29:54):
are good for your hair and yourscalp.
