(00:07):
All right.
Hi everybody.
This is Ryan, and I'm doing kindof a solo show today.
I'm not here with Shayne, butI'm here with two of my favorite
people.
First, we have my daughter,Miriam.
Miriam, why don't you say hi andintroduce yourself.
Hi, I'm Miriam.
I'm 17 years old.

(00:27):
All right, and I have my son,Caleb.
Caleb, why don't you introduceyourself.
Hi, my name's Caleb.
All right.
And we are currently inSandusky, Ohio.
Near the end of our road trip.
I've been posting pictures ofour road trip all along the way
here.
And so we thought today wetalked a little bit about road
trips.
We have a couple more days ofour road trip left.

(00:49):
we are gonna go to Cedar Pointone day to the park, and one day
to the water park.
So we're looking forward tothat.
And then we've got a short, well, not short, but a three
hour drive home from the parkson Wednesday.
and yeah, so we are, we've beenout and about for almost a week,
believe it or not, and it's beenquite an experience, hasn't it?

(01:10):
Sure, yes, sure.
Caleb says, yeah, we approachedthis for several reasons.
So the first is Miriam islooking at colleges.
And so we spent some timelooking at various colleges.
We drove through Ohio, um, andstopped at one there.
We drove through Pennsylvaniaand stopped at a couple there.
And then we spent the lastcouple days in Washington, DC.

(01:33):
And, um, we looked at a couplecolleges there, some hits, some
misses, some yeses on the list, some nos on the list.
But overall, we've been takingin, um, a lot of the
countryside.
We have seen a lot of the partsof the country that the kids
haven't seen, and that's beenreally fun.
So I wanted to talk to them alittle bit about their

(01:54):
experience with the road trip.
First of all, Miriam, what hasyour favorite part of the road
trip been?
my favorite part has been seeingall of the scenery as we drive.
Uh, we don't really have a lotof different things in Indiana.
It's pretty much just flat andall.
Farmland and stuff.
So especially through likePennsylvania and even going into

(02:18):
Virginia, there was a lot ofmountains and it was just really
cool kind of up, down and allaround, wasn't it?
Mm-hmm.
of course, it did not help thatI made a major, uh, mistake.
We found out a couple days agothat for a bit of our trip I had
the, um, avoid highways featureon my uh, G P s and so
therefore, We, we weren't onsome of the highways.

(02:39):
We could have been, I don'tthink in Pennsylvania was that
big a deal.
But once we got close to to DCthat, that affected us.
Caleb, what's been your favoritepart?
Um, my favorite part was goingto all the colleges and seeing
all the college campuses we wentto.
Small ones, big ones, privateones, public ones.
So we've kind of seen all sortsof college settings and you

(03:01):
know, each one's kind of uniqueand that's really cool.
So, This is really our firstroad trip.
We had that accidental roadtrip, uh, to Florida at
Christmas time that I've alsotalked about on the show.
When you're thinking about goingon a road trip, what's something
that you would suggest somebodythink about?
Caleb, how about you?
Um, I would suggest to findstuff you wanna do in the car

(03:25):
because, well, it might notsound like a lot of driving.
It ends up a lot of drive.
Even a two hour drive can belong if you are not prepared.
And also plan time to stop atdifferent places and see the
scenery.
So what have you been doing topass the time?
Mostly just listening to musicand watching movies.
I've seen some sleeping.
Sleeping too.

(03:46):
Yeah.
Um.
Where have, what's some examplesof places that we've kind of
stopped to, to stretch our legsor, or pass some time along the
way?
Well, there's been some coolrest stops, but just when I mean
stops in more mean like stayingthe night, like we've stayed,
um, we kind of bopped around todifferent places and that's been
nice because we kind of get anew place to stay every night

(04:10):
where different hotels atdifferent accommodations and
stuff.
Yep.
How about you Maryam?
What's a suggestion that youhave?
Um, well I definitely think thatsplitting up the drive makes it
easier.
I would say get like as much ofas you can done in one sitting.
You don't have to go like 12hours at a time, but it's a lot
easier to do a five hour tripthan a three hour and a two hour

(04:33):
trip.
Yeah.
And that, and we have beenbreaking it up a little bit.
And so that, I don't know, Ikind of like that, but I, I see
your point.
You wanna, you.
Get as much under your belt asyou can.
And this time, this has been adifferent road trip for me
because Miriam's helped drive.
So she's gotten experience onwith the minivan on the highway.

(04:54):
Um, and that's been really nice.
I've been able to rest, do somework while, while she's been
driving.
So thinking of road trips,folks.
Where's the place that you thinkwould make a good road trip that
you haven't been on, but nowthat you've had the experience
of a multi-day road trip, youthink you'd like to go to
Miriam?
I think it'd be fun to do a roadtrip, um, in the West with more

(05:18):
like the national parks.
Yeah, I agree with that.
Caleb, how about you?
I think it would be fun to do aroad trip, um, up into like
Michigan and Canada andsomething like that.
Yep, that'd be great.
So I've been thinking about roadtrips and I've got a couple
suggestions for folks.

(05:38):
I think first of all, one of thethings that's helped on this one
is having everything writtendown.
So, for instance, I have a noteon my phone.
That has where we are each day, where our accommodations are,
how long we're gonna betraveling, um, kind of the, the
bullet points of the trip, ifyou will.
I like having this becauseeverything's there.

(05:59):
I have the name of the hotels,I'm all set to go.
I also like it because I canshare it.
So both the kids have the note,my wife has the note.
Um, you know, if I'm passing italong to folks, it's very easy
to do.
So that's been good.
Um, also think about, you know, everybody choosing something to
do.
That's something that myfamily's kind of picked up on as

(06:22):
the kids have gotten older and,um, it's worked really well on
this trip.
So we were in Washington, DC theother day, and Caleb got to
choose something, and Miriam gotto choose something and I got to
choose something.
Or we'll say, okay, Miriam, today's your day to choose what
kind of food we're having fordinner.
Or Caleb, you get to decide whatwe're doing at this.

(06:43):
Break.
And that helps everybody kind ofstay engaged.
And I also think it's okay tonot force it when you're on a
road trip.
It's okay to have quiet time.
It's okay to have screen time.
It's okay for everybody to kindof, um, you know, zone out for a
while and then you know, whenyou stop you can get back into
it.
You know, a lot of people feellike they have to fill the time

(07:05):
when you're on a road trip, andI don't think that's true.
I think, you know, to be quitehonest, I've found myself on
this trip driving without theradio on, without the podcasts
on, and just enjoying thescenery.
Especially when we get intoPennsylvania, West Virginia,
places like that, where the, thescenery really changes.
I've, I've really enjoyed that.
So those are a couple thoughtsfrom our road trip.

(07:28):
Nothing too earth shattering, but I hope that you, uh, choose
to have a road trip with yourfriends or family, um, because
it's a really good way toconnect.
It's a really good way to see apart of the country, and it's a
really good way to traveldifferently.
So, all right folks.
That is me from Sandusky, Ohio.
I would love to help you planyour next road trip if you wanna
