Trigger warning: This episode discusses suicide and mental health struggles. It may be distressing to some listeners.
Ethnographer Jinhyun Shin has been preventing suicides since a fateful phone call at age 15. He highlights the role loneliness and lack of real connection play in suicide, reminds us that the descent to suicidal ideation is never sudden, and urges us to abandon the idea of normal. Jin and Michelle also explore the impact of technology, identity or lack thereof, and the importance of vulnerability and strong support networks. Fostering conversation, community, and connection is the best way to prevent suicide.
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal ideation, support is out there.
You can call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org for 24/7 support.
You can also text 'TALK' to 741741.
