Episode 24 - Emma Munger // Illustrator. Cartoonist.
“Emma Munger is one hell of a talented artist, and if you aren’t already following her on Instagram, you definitely should be - she’s one of my favorite follows. Go check out her work now. I’ll wait. No, really, go now... Okay, so I don’t always start these little diary entries on BEDROOM™ by shamelessly plugging people’s work, but I find it necessary for y’all to understand her level of visual talent and unique vision. It’s certified real trap shit, for real. Bangers only. True visual treats. 100% game, hard in the paint, true Emma Munger gang shit. Okay, I’m fanning, but as Emma would say… I digress.
For those of you who don’t know, Emma used to live in San Francisco but now lives in Joshua Tree. She’s known for her sassy pin-up drawings of her favorite pop culture characters, her amazing comics (which are my personal favorite), and the fact that she’s a top-tier fan of Frasier – like, probably a bigger Frasier fan than anyone you know. Wild. She’s created work for brands like Pottery Barn Kids and Comedy Central, designed bookplates for publishing giants like Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, and to me – most legendarily – she used to work at Comix Experience here in San Francisco. She’s a fun hang, with a vibrant personality, and just an overall really pleasant and cool human.
In this episode of BEDROOM™, Emma and I talk about how our respective illustration processes have changed since acquiring iPads. We dive into the slippery topic of Instagram and how social media can be a freaking scam for us artist folk. Emma shares personal stories about how even going viral sometimes doesn't lead to more work - so we ask ourselves: what’s the point of these apps? Emma also shares her love of drawing people, and we discuss her illustrated pin-ups. We dive into her work with the Balboa Theater in San Francisco and also go deep into Emma’s love of comics and her background in narrative work. Emma even answers a listener-submitted question from the one and only BEDROOM™ mutual friend, the artist and author, Adam JK.
Finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Emma gives the fans what they want. Big shout-out to Emma Munger for coming onto the pod. Welcome to the BEDROOM™, y’all! WORLDWIDE PEACE!” – PSG

Ruthie's Table 4
For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
