(00:00):
At the end of Battleground in the Dresden Files, we were left
on quite the bombshell. So if you haven't read that book
yet, this is your spoiler warning.
If you have, and you've gotten over the shock of the arranged
marriage map tries to lay on Harry Dresden and Lara Wraith, I
want to explore whether or not something like that could
actually work. The Belated Binge Podcast
(00:23):
Welcome to Belated Binge. I'm Zach, former radio host and
lifelong sports fan discovering the magic of urban fantasy.
Today we're talking Dresden Files.
As I said, spoiler warning for everything through battleground.
The topic of today's episode or video.
However you want to look at thisthing is exploring whether or
not Harry and Lara could actually work in this intended
(00:49):
arranged union of such that we were left with kind of
shockingly at the end of Battleground.
I personally think that there could be something to this thing
and it actually could work. And so I want to start with just
sort of running down the logistics a little bit real
quick. For starters, Lara wants to
(01:12):
solidify a relationship with theWinter Faye.
And Lara is smart enough to knowthat eating, for the lack of a
better term, Harry would jeopardize that desire after Mab
arranges this union herself. And Lara has shown an interest
in Harry before this, you know, basically since they faced down
(01:34):
those black court vampires in their first meeting together.
Remember the porn set, that whole thing ever since that
moment where she almost killed him, you know, and shot Thomas
and all of that, that, that whole, it was a whole thing.
(01:54):
Ever since then, there's been this sort of attraction, if you
will. And if you remember, like, for
instance, when Lara saw Harry around Lucio and how excited she
was said to have gotten by seeing it.
And it's because she'd figured out that they were, you know,
(02:15):
sleeping together and that he wasn't going to be protected by
Susan's love anymore. Now you could think of that
moment in the books. And I'm kind of hyper fixating
on that one moment. It's one of many, right?
There have been countless times in this hairy Lara relationship,
(02:36):
you know, partnership, forced partnership, whatever.
There seems to have been some kind of of interest there,
particularly from Lara. And so you could see this, this
micro moment that I'm talking about as predatory, you know, as
a sign that she wanted to, you know, feed off of Harry, you
(02:57):
know, claim him. But she actually never tried to
do that. And then the next time that
these two actually physically touched, he was protected by
Murphy and she was disappointed.Perhaps that's because she
couldn't eat him, perhaps it wasbecause that unequivocally meant
(03:20):
that he was in love with someoneelse.
And it's at least not too crazy to think that because of all of
those things, she would actuallybe happy with an outcome in
which her and Harry were actually, you know, romantically
involved. They've also made a really
(03:41):
strong pair anytime they've teamed up in the books on the
adventure side of things, on theproblem solving side of things,
on the fighting side of things. They're always set up as
enemies, but they're almost never actually at odds with each
other. Rather, they're consistently
making deals to set aside their personal vendetta with each
(04:04):
other and working together toward a common goal of some
kind. And if you noticed, they're
typically Harry's idea, and Larausually doesn't OfferUp much
resistance past the initial obligatory like why is this my
problem response. And then she usually comes
(04:25):
around with very little convincing necessary, which
suggests that they have a natural similarity on how they
solve problems as well. And when they work together,
there's always a tension, A friction, a I'll be it sexual in
nature. A lot of times.
She's lost control over her seduction with him a few
(04:50):
different times throughout the books.
And she's told him that she can decide what like when to use
what he calls the come hit her anytime she wants to, but she
can't always decide when not to use it.
So the question could be asked how much of that is her inner
(05:10):
demon, and how much of that is perhaps her own genuine interest
and attraction to Harry in particular.
But regardless of whether or notLara could or would want to have
a legit relationship with Harry, this all came about because she
wants to align with Winter. And Mab says in order to do
(05:32):
that, they have to have this marriage.
I will note that I interpreted this all to be about mixing
bloodlines. And that would mean that they
would have to have a child together.
But some people on TikTok have said that not only would Harry's
mantle not technically be mixingbloodlines, you know, between
Winterfey and white corps vampires, but also that this is
(05:55):
more about political alliances rather than procreation.
I don't know if I just interpreted this differently, if
somebody else interpreted it differently.
I'm personally open to multiple interpretations of the story in
that I may have, you know, misrepresented that conversation
myself in the way that I did it.I honestly have not gone back to
(06:19):
Battleground in a reread yet, soI'm going off memory for this
particular portion of the discussion.
You know, regardless though, about whether or not they'd have
to actually have a tiny little Lara Harry baby they and if this
was a fully political arrangement, the physical
(06:41):
attraction parts still remain. And if these two are married to
each other and physically attracted to each other,
physical intimacy is bound to come up at some point in time,
right? And that kind of made me wonder
too, could they do that without Harry being fed on and
(07:04):
eventually turning into a thrall, or being killed, or even
just weakening himself significantly by having his life
force fed upon over the course of time?
And we know that from Thomas. What he has said about white
corps vampires is that they're nearly infertile.
So it's safe to assume that if achild were to be part of this
(07:28):
deal, it wouldn't be a situationwhere the first time they pull
the goalie, they shoot and score.
They would likely need to be, well, you know, on the regular
to achieve the task at hand. And even if, like I said a
minute ago, a child isn't necessary, could they manage to
(07:49):
actually have some kind of physical relationship at all
safely for Harry? Is it possible?
What if it is? And I came up with a few
different theories and these were the things that I shared on
social media. And these videos have gotten a
(08:10):
lot of really fun discussion on TikTok in particular.
So if you want to go check out and and jump into that
discussion, I welcome you over there as well.
And obviously leave a comment onthis video too.
And this is a good time as any to remind you to subscribe to
the channel so that you can get more of this, you know, Dresden
(08:32):
Files urban fantasy type of content from this video podcast.
Now a few of the potential theories that I had on how it
could possibly happen to which Harry and Lara were able to be
together physically without it draining the life from Harry.
(08:54):
Essentially the first is Harry being starborn.
And we don't really know what that means yet, but it does give
him power over outsiders. And if I understood correctly,
in Battleground, Dracool said that he was also Starborn.
And while we have seen Harry be intoxicated by Red Court venom,
(09:17):
we've seen him succumb to the intensity of White Court
vampires in their seduction. We've only actually seen him fed
upon very briefly one time in turncoat.
And that's actually something that I had forgotten about until
a Tik toker pointed it out to me.
So like I said, a lot of good discussion happening.
(09:39):
Generally, he's always had some kind of love protection from it.
But I could see a world where this starborn thing potentially
includes some sort of a protection not just from
outsiders and their like possession and their mind
(09:59):
mangling when you're going up against them and their, you
know, mental magic, but also potentially having some kind of
protection from other demon soulpossession, potentially feeding
type of damage long term as well.
You know, at least maybe the intense feeding or like that
(10:21):
long term feeding. Maybe.
So that is, you know, he may experience effects initially,
but it's not something that lasts for him or is not
something that is going to, you know, maybe eventually he
becomes like immune to it or whatever because of the Starborn
thing. Possibly.
(10:42):
I don't know. And I don't know if I'd love it
if that was truly what happened because then I think we're just
making Starborn kind of plot armor, plot convenience
extraordinaire where it doesn't matter what the problem is.
Starborn fixes it. And I don't really know that I
love that possibility, but it could be a possibility.
(11:03):
Another possibility is his mother.
And we could go real Harry Potter about this, right?
But it's, it's a very it there'salready a parallel there.
And could that concept be fleshed out a little bit more?
If you recall, Harry's mother was with Lara's father.
(11:25):
She gave birth to Thomas. And we later learn that about
half the women who conceive a White court vampire baby don't
survive the birth. She not only survived the birth,
but she was actually able to stop Lord Raith from feeding on
anyone else with her death curseand tied it to her son's lives,
(11:48):
the death curse that she leveledwhen she was giving birth to
Harry and died while giving birth to Harry.
So is there any way that she could have passed down any sort
of like particular immunity or special protection for Harry
against the White Court feeding, given that she herself would
(12:14):
have obviously had been fed uponby Lord Wraith in order for them
to have been intimate and conceived a child together
themselves? And so maybe there could be
something expounded upon in thatthat, like I said, is very, very
Harry Potter adjacent with, you know, a mother's protection.
(12:35):
But finally, I thought about theWinter Mantle, and this is my
favorite one of these possibilities, to be honest.
Harry is able to draw from the Winter Mantle in order to
enhance his magic, enhance his physical abilities, shut out
physical pain. And it clearly has strong
impulses of its own for violence, for sex.
(12:58):
It's very, you know, masculine and testosterone driven, you
know, kind of as its own entity. It's almost described as
something inside of Harry that isn't actually a part of him.
It's like an aftermarket power source that he can tap into.
And Molly even tells him that their mantels don't work the
(13:19):
same. Hers is so intertwined with her
own being that she's no longer actually human.
Her mantle essentially made her she.
Harry's doesn't do that, so is it possible that Lara's demon
could actually feed on the Winter mantle rather than Harry
(13:41):
directly? He might not escape any
potential impact, but perhaps without lasting effects or, you
know, danger to himself in particular.
Maybe it could already work likethat based on how the mantle is
kind of its own entity inside ofhim.
Or maybe Mab could do something to make it work like that in
(14:03):
support of her goal in particular.
Cause again, she arranged this marriage.
She wants this to happen, and you could say that she doesn't
care if Harry dies as a result. But they've been saying that in
a lot of these books, and her actions have never actually
supported that line of thinking. At the end of the day, she's had
Harry's back, even if it's been presented as reluctantly or as
(14:29):
self-serving or whatever the case may be.
But there seems to be more happening with her needing Harry
as her night, no matter how muchof a pain in the ass he is.
Probably has something to do with the Starborn thing in his
power over outsiders. Given that she's in charge of
protecting the outer gates against the outsiders, this is
(14:51):
quickly turning into a theory for another day.
But when it's all said and done,I don't actually hate the idea
of Harry and Lara together in the Winter mantle, allowing them
to do that in a safe and controlled manner.
And another thing that somebody brought up on social media as a
possibility for this is if that could be the way that Harry's
(15:15):
actually able to break his allegiance to Winter by having
Lara feed on the mantle to the point of her demon destroying
the winter mantle inside of Harry.
And then Harry comes out whole again.
I don't hate this theory either,or at least the line of thinking
and you're going through it. I have some questions because I
(15:38):
know part of that winter mantle thing was like to heal Harry
from intense damage that he had like the broken back before
going too crazy down that particular rabbit hole.
Because again, I feel like that's a theory for another day.
I think it's possible that if Harry is relieved of this
mantle, then like all of the physical trauma is all going to
(15:58):
hit him at once and he's going to end up like paralyzed or
worse. And so do we actually want him
relieved of the winter mantle? I don't know.
So again, a theory to go down another day, but all very
interesting. But back to the the the topic at
hand, Harry and Lara together I think has something that could
(16:22):
be really engaging within the context of the books Canon and
and where it could take the story next.
Of course, she's no Murph and I would not want it to be
portrayed as some kind of like immediate thing or actually have
it end up being forced upon them.
But I wouldn't hate if 12 monthsis ended with him actually kind
(16:47):
of coming to find that he's interested in this as well.
And so is she in there? Because they're going to be
going on these like arranged dates and stuff that, you know,
they already talk about it in the law.
As you know, they're already kind of like almost having their
lawyers draw up the prenups for the courting process in that
(17:08):
little short story or what it what do they call that novella?
That's the word that I was looking for.
But like, there, there could be,you know, lots of shenanigans
and chaos that Harry has to survive, but maybe they'd
survive it together and end up actually liking the arrangement
idea after all. And if that's the case, I would
think that that would be enough to also lift the lasting
(17:30):
protection that he may still have for Murph so that Lyra
could, you know, actually physically touch him if he's
entering the situation as a willing and desired participant.
Of course, if that were to be the case, that means that, you
know, something else will obviously have to happen to
completely screw it up because that's what Jim Butcher likes to
(17:52):
do. He just likes to punish Harry in
every way possibly imaginable. Now, this is all actually
assuming, too, that the arrangement will happen, which
I'm not so sure that it would. We ended Battleground with two
major plot points that were bothput on a clock of one year,
which is obviously not an accident.
(18:15):
The wedding between Harry and Lara is one of them.
You know he so it's whatever thethe 12 month courtship thing
that was agreed upon. But that's also when Harry's
supposed to learn what star bornand stars and stones actually
means. And the next book is 12 months,
(18:37):
and I don't need to tell you that those things align with
each other. So I can assume that we're going
to spend the whole book leading up to those anticipated
outcomes. And I wouldn't be shocked if
either or neither of them actually came to bear The thing
with Lara in particular, I couldsee Harry spending the whole
(18:58):
book trying to figure out a way out of it, whether that's a good
idea or not. Also, fun side note, before we
wrap this thing up, imagine Thomas's reaction when Harry and
Lara finally figure out how to save him and release him from
Demon Reach. Like surprise bro.
We're married now, but that's probably another topic for
(19:23):
another day. If you're watching this on
YouTube, leave a comment if thisarrangement will actually take
place in 12 months, and subscribe for more Dresden Files
and urban fantasy content please.
I would greatly appreciate it ifyou're listening on a podcast
player, please leave a five starreview and say something nice if
it gives you the option to do so.
(19:43):
And remember, life is short. Drive the trusty Blue Beetle,
curl up in your basement apartment with a good book and
fuego the whole damn building. If anyone has a problem with it,
just make sure the Bob makes it out and this fart outs can keep
enough power. Going to catch the next episode
of Bladed Pinch.
