(00:00):
Well, good morning and welcometo Beyond Sunday and day 16 of
our anchored in God's Promisesseries.
Every morning this month, we'restarting with one unshakable
truth from God's word.
Something to ground our heartsbefore the demands of the day
start pulling us in everydirection.
Today's verse is from thePsalms, and it's all about where
we place our confidence when wefeel like life's uncertain.
(00:21):
It's Psalm 1 21, verses one andtwo.
It says, I lift my eyes to themountains.
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, themaker of heaven and earth.
The psalmist begins by saying, Ilift my eyes to the mountains.
In ancient times, mountains wereoften associated with strength
and stability, and even placesof refuge, but they could also
(00:42):
represent danger, steep paths, hidden threats, uncertainty
about what's on the other side.
This verse invites us to thinkabout where our eyes naturally
go when trouble comes.
Do we look at all the obstacles, the dangers, the uncertainty, or
do we lift our gaze higher tothe one who's above it all?
Sometimes the most powerful actof faith is simply changing our
(01:04):
focus from the problem to theproblem solver.
The psalmist doesn't assume heasks the question out loud,
where does my help come from?
It's an honest searching moment.
We all have things weinstinctively turn to for help.
Our own ability to fix problems, the advice of friends, financial
security, or even distractionsto avoid thinking about the
(01:27):
issue.
Those aren't always bad, butthey're not ultimate.
The question forces us to pauseand answer when life shakes me.
Where am I really putting mytrust?
Now, the psalmist answers hisown question.
My help comes from the Lord, right?
And not just any Lord, the makerof heaven and earth, the one who
spoke galaxies into being theone who carved mountains with
(01:50):
his hands, the one who holds theoceans in place and calls the
stars by name.
That means there is no situationin your life, too complex, too
heavy, or too far gone for himto handle.
If he made it all, he cansustain it all, including you.
When you know the source of yourhelp, you can walk into
uncertainty with confidence.
(02:11):
I remember talking with a youngdad in our church who had just
lost his job.
The timing couldn't have beenworse.
They had Bills, a new baby, andno savings.
He told me.
I kept looking at my bankaccount, my resume, my contacts,
and it just made me feel morehopeless.
Then one morning I read Psalm 121 and it hit me.
I've been looking at the wrongplace for help.
(02:32):
I needed to look up.
Within weeks, the job camethrough that was a better fit
than the one he had lost.
But he told me the biggestchange wasn't getting the job.
It was shifting his focus to Godfirst, here's your challenge
today.
Identify one thing you've beenlooking to for help more than
you've been looking to God.
It could be a plan or a personor even your own strength.
(02:54):
Then speak this verse out loud.
My help comes from the Lord, themaker of heaven and earth.
Say it until it stops beingwords on a page and starts
becoming truth in your heart.
Let's pray.
Lord, thank you that we don'thave to wonder where our help
comes from.
It comes from you, the maker, the sustainer, the one who sees
and knows us.
(03:15):
Lift our eyes today above ourproblems, to your power, and
teach us to rely on you firstalways in Jesus' name, amen.
Thanks for joining me today onBeyond Sunday.
If this promise encouraged you, share it with someone else who
might be feeling overwhelmed andneeds to know where their help
really comes from.
I'll see you tomorrow.
